Notes from your Chapter Directors:
Wow, it sure has been cold! As we write this letter the snow is falling. The mild winter
seems to have disappeared. We are experiencing real winter weather.
Thank you to everyone who gave us ideas for places to ride. We planned part of our
calendar at our staff meeting. We will need to plan the rest for the year.
Our dress up night will be Feb. 20 at 5:30. It will be at the restaurant at Pere Marquette
Lodge. We hope many of you will be attending.
We wish everyone a Happy Valentine’s Day.
Be safe and stay warm.

Past events:
December 31st we brought in the New Year at the Rondi’s. About 20 members were in
attendance enjoying great food and company.
January 2nd was our polar bear ride. The weather was in the mid to upper 30’s. We met
at Casey’s in Gillespie and rode over to China Town restaurant in Litchfield. There were
17 members and 3 guest in attendance.
January 3rd – 5th several from the chapter went with Fred Cline Tours to the casino at
Tama, Iowa. There were no big winners this year.
January 9th – 10th there was a bike show in St. Louis. From the chapter, the Schmidts
and Kalahers went. The most interesting parts were the stunt shows on motorcycles and
also on pogo sticks.
Future events:
February 7th Chapter “O” is having a training class called “perception.” Two people
from Missouri will be presenting this seminar about what you don’t see while riding your
motorcycle. It will be in Bellville at the 1st Methodist Church on East Main at 1:00 p.m.
February 11th is our monthly meeting. We will meet at Miners’ restaurant in Gillespie.
Eat at 5:30 p.m., the meeting will start at 7.
February 13th we will have a staff meeting at 1:00 p.m. at WAM Computers, 211 N
State St. in Litchfield to plan rides for the rest of the year.
February 20th we will have our dress up night. We are going to the restaurant at the Pere
Marquette Lodge in Grafton at 5:30 p.m.

Keep your mind on the ride
It's another New Year, and time to think about the goals we have for 2016. One of my goals is to be prepared for
another safe, accident free motorcycling season for everyone in the chapter. In order to do that, my job is to give
members ideas on how to be prepared for what might happen while riding. One way to be prepared is to have a useful
first aid kit.
The chapter educators for Missouri chapter 'O', Steve & Diana Lake, discuss first aid kits in a recent newsletter. In
researching what makes up a good kit, they discovered that the items in the small, convenient, and inexpensive kits
found at the store are not really adequate for taking care of people at a crash scene. If you are involved in an accident,
even at relatively slow speeds of 30 to 40 miles per hour, there will be major trauma. The following list is by no
means definitive. You can add things to it as you see fit:
1-2 CPR Masks or Micro Shields
4-6 pairs of gloves, Non-Latex
Face Shield or clear glasses with surgical type mask
4-6 Large rolls of 4in. gauze
4-6 Large Rolls of 2in. - 3in.gauze
Large surgical type pads (2 to 4—5in x 9in aka ABD
(abdominal) pads or Multi-trauma pads
4 blood stopper sponges (2 each or 25 gram and 5 gram)
optional but recommended
Assorted Gauze Pads (Non-stick if possible)
Assorted Band Aids
Adhesive tape 1in. Wide- two rolls minimum
Trauma type scissors
Eye wash
2 – 4 eye pads (need to cover both eyes if one is injured)
Cleansing compresses
Betadine Swabs (or Non-Allergenic equivalent)
Wound wash
3 LARGE Triangular Bandages for broken arms, etc.
Ace bandages – large and medium
Sam Split or other Splits that are small but can be
lengthened if needed
Pneumonic splits – assorted (aka: Air Splints)
Cold and Hot Packs
Shock Blanket (Space blanket)
Biomedical Waste Bag or 3 – 4 VERY large sized Zip
Lock bags
Hand-Sanitizer – waterless
Glucose gel tube
Tweezers
Antibiotic Ointment
Aspirin to help ease Stroke and Heart Attack
Symptoms
GOOD first aid booklet
Dozen Large Safety Pins to hold blood soaked
bandages together better than tape
Small Flashlight with Red/White Lenses for Traffic
Control
Throw-Away Plastic Poncho to cover
Victim/Responders in Rain
Energy Bars and Candy for Diabetics
One School-sized Zippered Backpack
My suggestion would be to start small and build upon the list gradually. Winter time is also a great time to update
your current first aid kit. Don't forget, items have a shelf life. The kit you buy at the store already made also needs to
be updated to make sure its contents will be effective when you need them. After all, the life you save may be your
own.
Stay Safe,
Nancy
