The migra on of young people from rural America has been an issue for many
years; however, recent studies show that an increasing percent of families are
slowly moving back to rural areas because they wish to raise their children in a safe
environment. That is good news, but rural communi es s ll face the problem of
losing other resources; one of them being the Transfer of Wealth.
The Transfer of Wealth is the transfer of assets from one genera on to the
next genera on. For instance, many people born and raised in rural communi es
move to larger ci es, like Kansas City or Wichita, when these individual’s parents
or family members pass away the family estate is passed on to them. It is likely that
the wealth in the estate, the wealth built in a rural community, disappears with the
heir and eventually benefits the community the estate heir resides in; not the rural
community where they grew up. These dollars and resources are now gone from that
rural community forever.
The Center for Economic Development and Business Research at Wichita State
University was commissioned by the Kansas Health Founda on (KHF) to es mate
future intergenera onal wealth transfer for each county in Kansas. The study
es mated that $66 billion will be transferred from one genera on to the next in
Kansas by 2020, and that $598 billion will be transferred by 2060. If local founda ons
were to receive just 5% of the wealth es mated to transfer to the next genera on
by 2064 the impact would be significant to small rural communi es. According to
the study, Dickinson, Lyon, Marion and Morris County communi es would retain
a combined amount of more than $625 million dollars if only 5% of the projected
Transfer of Wealth were donated to local community founda ons in those coun es.
No one is sugges ng that people should not leave the majority of their estate
to their family. However, by planning ahead and leaving a small percentage of their
