PRESIDENT’S REPORT
2014 was a very exciting year for the Port Moody Arts Centre Society – so much hard work,
energy and passion was given, by so many, so that Port Moody could have an Arts Centre that is
becoming worthy of the title, City of the Arts.
The most important event of the year was the completion and the official opening of the
Centennial Appleyard House and Atrium in September. A formal and heartfelt “thank you” must
be given to those who helped us create this new Arts Centre: The Honorable James Moore and
the Federal Government, Linda Reimer and the Provincial Government, Mayor Clay and Council
and the City of Port Moody, our major sponsors Canadian Pacific and Suncor Energy, many smaller sponsors both
companies and individuals, members of the Society’s board and staff. Thank you and I hope you will all continue to
support us by attending our events, seeing our exhibitions, taking courses and telling us what you would like us to do
for the community.
Amongst all the construction and renovations the year started with a sophisticated and successful dinner at the
Westwood Plateau Golf Country Club to help us raise funds to pay for the expansion. I thank David Bassett and his
committee for all their work. This was followed by Arts Fest organized by Valerie Simmons and her committee who
recognized that our old format for the Festival of the Arts was not attracting our now different community. They
tested out several new ideas which gave us some great ideas for the future of Arts Fest. Again thank you for a daring
undertaking.
In July we held Art in the Garden with nine gardens on show. There was an arts related activity in each of the gardens.
We had been hoping that visitors would be able to enjoy both the gardens and the art in the July sunshine, but no,
it poured with rain! However, many people visited the gardens and even more came to the tent event and silent
auction at the Arts Centre. Afterwards we told ourselves that we do live on the West Coast and cannot have marvellous
gardens without the rain. Thank you Rose Kapp and her committee.
In September we had the Official Opening of the expanded Arts Centre, as mentioned, and the first gallery exhibition
in our new and expanded space with a stunning exhibition “Bloom” by Katherine O’Regan and Robert Shiozaki and a
group show by Vancouver Metal Arts. Our new gallery was filled with colour and texture and looked like a professional
gallery.
BC Uncorked: The Art of Food & Wine, in partnership with John Gerum of Westcoast Wine Education, was held at
Heritage Woods Secondary School, while this gave us more space it is a pity to take activities away from the Arts
Centre. This was followed by Girls Night Out another successful sold out event. Scotia Bank sponsored this event
and their employees sold tickets and worked the event along with Arts Centre staff who organized the evening. A
thank you to all of them. Finally in the run up to Christmas we had “Winter Treasures” in the gallery and encouraged
the community to do their Christmas shopping there. We also tried to do a caroling evening hoping members would
come and sing; unfortunately we did not have enough lead time to obtain live music to make the event a success. We
will try again next year.
A very full year, and I wish the Society every success in 2015.
Respectfully submitted,
Ann Kitching, President

INTERIM OPERATIONS MANAGER
The growth of the Arts Centre over the last year has been amazing! We grew in size with the addition of the Centennial
Appleyard House and Atrium and now enjoy the benefits of a large welcoming reception area with expanded space
for classes and events. The growth in the number of classes, music lessons and member groups to the Arts Centre is
quickly filling the space. We are already experiencing days when the Arts Centre is operating beyond capacity. In 2014
we had 28,000 visitors, which is an increase of 80 percent over last year. Truly remarkable numbers! We continually
receive comments that the Arts Centre is a great place. People remark on the friendly front desk staff, the energy of the
staff, the great instructors and variety of classes, and how the Arts Centre has transformed over the last year.
What we have accomplished in over the past year is to the credit of a committed staff that continue to exceed
expectations. They are:
•
•
•
•

•
Janice Cotter – Gallery Coordinator
Kelly Doyle – Fund Development Coordinator
Pamela Gole – Communications and Events Coordinator
Valerie Lau – Graphic Designer
Sandra Niven – Program and Volunteer Coordinator
Maria Centola, Sharon Kuehn, Michelle Kwee, Sabaah Moffedi,
Kelly Vischer, Kelsey Wood - Customer Service Representatives
We received funding in Spring 2014 for the Canada Summer Jobs and were able to employee Maria Centola and
Michelle Kwee who assisted us with Programs, Gallery, Events and Communications.
With continued increases in classes and music students we look forward to another great year.

PLANNING COMMITTEE
The role of the Planning Committee is to undertake both short and long term planning priorities
for the Arts Centre as identified in the annual strategic plan. 2014 was a busy year for the Planning
Committee.
Most significantly, the Committee Chairperson worked throughout the year with the City of Port
Moody management and staff on the final stages of the Arts Centre Expansion Project. In addition, we
received permission to proceed with interior renovations to the Old City Hall building as needed, with
a contractor of our choice. The Planning Committee worked with the Executive Director to design and
oversee the successful completion of the task.
Other major activities for the Planning Committee in 2014 included consideration of the Arts and
Culture portion of the Official Community Plan as it related to the Arts Centre interests. We also
drafted an Events Management tool, along with the Events Committee, to rationalize the selection
process and management of proposed special events. Suggestions for needed capital expenditures
were identified for the Fundraising Committee and Events Committee to consider in their planning for
2015 and beyond.
The Government of BC is revising the Societies Act and had issued a White Paper of the proposed
Act for discussion and feedback. The Planning Committee Chairperson was designated to review the
White Paper and bring to the Board’s attention relevant changes. This change provides an opportunity
to renew the Port Moody Art Centre Society’s bylaws; a draft version was created and submitted to the
Board for future discussion.

2014 EVENTS
The Arts Centre successfully delivered a variety of community and fundraising events in 2014. In addition, the
Board formed an Events Committee to better evaluate the number and type of events that we will continue to offer.
The committee's goal is to support events that fit the Arts Centre's mandate and have established criteria to fairly
evaluate what we are offering. This criteria includes, but is not limited to, ensuring our events maximize community
engagement, are innovative, offer a participatory element, include a clear arts focus, effectively use Arts Centre
resources, and more.

FUND DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE
2014 was an exciting and eventful year as we prepared for the Grand Opening of the Centennial Appleyard House &
Atrium, which took place on Saturday, September 6th. This event was well attended with more than 250 people from
the community, as well as special guests including Minister James Moore, MLA Linda Reimer, Port Moody Mayor Mike
Clay and Council. We were very pleased to have David Driscoll as our Master of Ceremonies for the official opening.
David served as Mayor of Port Moody for four-terms from 1983 to 1993. He is a long-time Port Moody resident and
a Legacy Donor of the Arts Centre. Many of our major donors for the Arts Centre Expansion Project were also in
attendance. We were delighted to have our major Legacy Donors Mark Rickerby with Canadian Pacific, and April
Maestas with Suncor Energy, address the crowd at this significant event. The Grand Opening was a true celebration
with Arts Centre activities, live music, refreshments, as well as guided tours of the expanded facility.
The Arts Centre Expansion Project took place from January 2013 to December 2014 with a target to raise $200,000
towards the Atrium Connector and Arts Centre renovations. We are proud to announce that we reached our goal by
December 2014.
Our heartfelt thanks go to our community for their generous support. Every single contribution is appreciated, from
the $20 contributions in our donation box, to those attending our fundraising events, and to our generous Legacy
Donors.
To recognize major donors and raise funds to support the Arts Centre Expansion Project, we presented our first
annual gala, the Art4U Gala in January of 2014. At the Art4U Gala, we showcased Arts Centre instructors, presented
entertainment and hosted live and silent auctions. This fundraising event raised more than $25,500 towards the
project.
The Arts Centre Expansion Project has been an incredible journey for the Port Moody Arts Centre staff, Board of
Directors, volunteers and community supporters. We sincerely thank everyone involved in making this legacy project
a great success.
In addition to our Funding Partners, Foundations, Legacy and Individual donors, we have received great support
with in-kind donations from our business community including auction and raffle items, media support, catering,
beverages, supplies and equipment. In 2014, we received more than $100,000 through in-kind donations.
Now that we have completed the Arts Centre Expansion Project, our next major event is the Gala Performance on
Thursday Nov. 12th. Local artist Kristian Alexandrov and a great selection of other musicians will provide a wonderfully
entertaining evening while raising funds to support the Port Moody Art Centre’s Making it Work campaign.
We thank all donors and look forward to your continued support.
Respectfully submitted,
David Bassett

GALLERY COMMITTEE
In January 2014, the Gallery Committee, under then Chair Hilary Letwin, welcomed Janice Cotter as Gallery
Coordinator. Janice had to deal with construction issues during the expansion project and as a result of her energy
and hard work, the Arts Centre received a refreshed Gallery with newly painted walls, removal of large furniture and
doors and expanded display areas: the Appleyard Parlour displays Arts Centre instructors’ work, while the boardroom
– renamed the Young Artists Gallery - features the work of Arts Centre students and emerging youth artists.
Extra exhibition space means more art. We have been pleased to host hundreds of artists and thousands of their
creative works through solo and group shows throughout 2014. A new feature added for 2014 was Creative
Conversations, a lecture series of exhibiting artists.
From January to December we hosted 11 regular exhibitions with the work of 218 artists and attendance of more than
1000 people at opening receptions. We started the year with our biannual Instructors show, followed by an open call
exhibition, Twisted, the Port Moody Art Association Artist’s Choice, Maggie White, and our ceramics artist-in-residence,
Otto Kamensek.
Summer saw the 3D gallery closed as it was used as temporary office space during construction. Exhibits in the other
spaces included Jeff Wilson, Lynne Fahnestalk, P. Thomas Wood, and Passionate Outdoor Painters.
The Grand Opening in September featured a photograph exhibition that followed the history of the Appleyard
House and the construction at the Arts Centre. Fall exhibits in the new space included a collaborative ceramic and
photography show by Katherine O’Regan and Robert Shiozaki, the Vancouver Metal Arts and Art 4 Life, a new group
exhibit of artwork meant for an audience of children and families, plus Joyelle Brandt’s Princess Monsters. These last
two had participatory features and Art 4 Life had a special Sunday afternoon opening that was a great hit.
Our first pop-up gallery exhibition at VanCity Suterbrook ran from October to the end of March 2015 featuring
selected works by Jeff Wilson.
Our final exhibition in 2014 was Winter Treasures, featuring craft and small artworks from more than 54 artists.
Combined with the Blackberry Gift Shop’s expanded shop space, the Arts Centre became a shopping destination of
one-of-a-kind items. During Winter Treasures, staff hosted Girls Night @ PoMoArts for an evening of pampering and
holiday shopping.
Overall, attendance for exhibition openings continues to grow and general gallery viewing is rising due to the quality
and variety of exhibits. Submissions for exhibition proposals have increased due to our recognition in the artistic
community and wider call-outs. Gallery sales more than doubled from $11,609 in 2013 to $23,607 in 2014, predicting
an optimistic future.

PROGRAMING COMMITTEE
Increased diversity in our arts and music programs in 2014 resulted not only in increased attendance, but also an
increase in active involvement of various local artists groups. This remarkable turnaround is starting to make the
Arts Centre as the “cultural hub” of the Tri-Cities. We offered more than 350 classes in 2014 with more than 1300
registrations.
Lots of program options – something for everyone!
We offered many new programs throughout the year, including: Seniors Theatre, Music Together, Sewing, Youth
Mentorship Summer Program, Yoga and Art, Nail Art, and Felting.
We held two open houses in 2014, the first around Family Day in February, and the other on September 26th to
coincide with Culture Days. We had more than 500 visitors to the Arts Centre at the two events.
The Arts Centre has a pool of incredibly talented and diverse faculty members. We hired four new instructors in 2014
to increase the variety of our program offerings: Lia Dvir (piano) and Danielle Cyr (voice), Nicole Smith (ceramics), and
Mark Pytlos (oils).
We held three all-instructors meetings in 2014. This continues to be a great opportunity for us to engage with all of the
instructors, introduce new instructors, as well as to inform them of any changes and upcoming deadlines. This is also
our opportunity to thank them for their continued support as we work together as a team.
In touch with the community…
The Arts Centre responded to a need of the community during the September teachers strike by quickly organizing
art camps for children to attend, and introduced after-camp care for working parents.
Group membership continued to grow with 14 member groups, including the Tri-City Potters, the Port Moody Arts
Club, Shoreline Writers and the Writers Bloc Songwriting Group.
Dedicated staff and volunteers…
Program & Volunteer Coordinator, Sandra Niven, did an incredible job of promoting our programs. From participation
in community events, developing relationships with new instructors, School District 43 and other key community
members, and ensuring our brochures and posters were strategically placed throughout the Tri-Cities and beyond,
Sandra worked tirelessly to raise awareness of the Arts Centre. She handled the social media for programs and
continues to be very successful in increasing traffic to the registration site, generating new fans of the Arts Centre, and
generating interest in the Arts Centre activities.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH
The focus of the Community Outreach Committee during 2014 was to set the
basic parameters for an agreement with Moody Middle School for the Arts for a
cooperative Artist Exchange program. The basics are in place with our first program
being offered to the students of Moody Middle in June 2015 with an expanded
offering of programs being planned for the next academic year starting in late
September 2015. This is the start of a comprehensive program aimed at the youth of
Port Moody through the schools and other community facilities.
Respectfully submitted,
Del Holbrook, Chair

A Youth Leadership Program was developed
mentoring 3 volunteers to enrich their
experience and provide skills for future
employment in the arts.

FINANCE COMMITTEE
2014 was a unique and complex year for the Arts Centre financially, due to the Appleyard expansion,
and the result is financial statements that require some accounting context to reduce any confusion.
The Financial Statements for the year ended December 31, 2014 presented includes:
•
•
•
Balance Sheet
Statement of Fund Balances
Statements of Operations - one for unrestricted funds and one for restricted funds
The Statement of Operations for Unrestricted Funds reflect the transactions related to general
operations as well as captures the amortization associated with capital expenditures. The Statement
of Operations for Restricted Funds reflects transactions associated with gaming grants, endowment
funds, expansion fund and equipment and operating reserves.
During the Arts Centre Expansion, costs were incurred for computer hardware and network
equipment, furniture and fixtures, as well as for the new Atrium and renovations to the pre-existing
Arts Centre building. Even though the City owns the expanded building, it is appropriate for the Port
Moody Arts Centre Society to capitalize the costs associated with the Atrium and renovations as
“building upgrades” and reflect the amounts incurred as an asset on the Balance Sheet to be amortized
over time (similar to leasehold improvements). As such, the amounts incurred for the expansion are
not captured as “expenses” in the Statement of Operations for Restricted Funds, thus resulting in the
net surplus of $111,621.
The impact of the expansion on general operations resulted in an operating deficiency of $102,504, of
which $19,774 pertains to amortization, a non cash expense item. The remaining $82,760 is primarily
attributable to budget overruns of staff costs, amounting to $71,892, as a result of increased operating
hours, packing and moving, cleanup, expanded programming and grand opening, and includes a
one-time bonus paid to staff totaling $10,750 in appreciation of their efforts and contributions made
during a challenging year. The residual balance of $10,868 is primarily attributable to increased
bookkeeping costs.
The seriousness of the operational overruns did not become clear to the Board until November and
did result in cash flow issues that required securing a $50,000 operating line of credit. As at December
31, 2014, $12,000 of the line of credit had been utilized, which is reflected on the Balance Sheet. The
liability to the City of $127,500 pertains to the Expansion Project, of which $83,750 has been paid in
2015, with the remaining balance of $43,750 due by December 31, 2015.
2015 is a year of transition for the Arts Centre as operations stabilize with the increased programs,
during which the Finance Committee’s attention will be focused on cost containment, increasing own
sourced revenues to offset 2014 losses, and cash management.
Respectfully submitted,
Keena Hicken-Gaberria, Chair
