WE CARE ABOUT OUR ENVIRONMENT
Port Moody takes the environment seriously.
A bylaw was recently passed that will ban
cosmetic pestice use on private lawns and gardens
by 2006. The City has not used pesticides on its public
spaces since 1988. When in our parks and forests, please
respect the environment by not littering. Please do not
pick any plants or flowers and stay on designated trails.
RULES, RULES, RULES Just a few rules in
Port Moody: helmets are mandatory for all
cyclists, as well as at our SK8 Park. Dogs must
be on a leash and in control. Owners or handlers must pick up after their dogs. Dogs may
be off leash at one of the City’s four off-leash
areas. See the map for locations. Watch for signage that
indicates you are leaving an off-leash area.
WILDLIFE Port Moody is located on the edge of
the north shore mountains. As a result, wildlife is
abundant here. Bears and coyotes are common
in all parts of the City. Bobcat and cougars, while rarely
seen, have been known to frequent our parks and ravines.
Make noise to alert wildlife to your presence: most animals will get out of your way if they know you are coming.
Keep pets leashed to avoid wildlife encounters. If you encounter a bear, remain calm. It is recommended that you
speak firmly to the bear. This will let him know you are not
a threat, and it will help calm you down, too. Back slowly
away, but do not turn your back. Use extreme caution if
bear cubs are seen: mother bears are not far off. Most bear
sitings do not require reporting, however if you see a bear
eating garbage or behaving aggressively towards people
or pets, call Port Moody Police at 9-1-1.
NEED TO LAUNCH YOUR BOAT? The Port
Moody boat launch is extremely popular. Daily
rates are $13 to launch and retrieve your boat
and park your vehicle & trailer. Additional parking is
available on weekends at the WestCoast Express Station, just over the Moody Street overpass south of the
park. Annual passes are available at the Social Recreation Centre, 300 Ioco Road.
WILDLIFE VIEWING Birdwatchers frequent
Shoreline Trail's several viewing areas. Several
water birds can be seen on the inlet, and the
adjacent forest boasts many other bird species. Eagles
and osprey nest around the inlet.
Steps from busy urban areas, Shoreline Trail and boardwalk winds around the head of Port Moody Inlet.
The City of Port Moody strives to use environmentally responsible methods and materials and encourages its residents to do the same. This pamphlet was printed on paper made with 30% post-consumer waste and processed
chlorine free. Please recycle.

T
he Coast Salish nation were the first inhabitants in the area that became Port Moody, likely attracted by the
sheltered waterfront and forested hillsides. The Fraser River gold rush of 1858 led Col. R.C. Moody and the Royal
Engineers to build a trail from the then-capital of New Westminster north to Port Moody as a defense position
in the event of an attack by U.S. soldiers. The attack never happened, but North Road is still a vital link between the
two cities. Twenty years later Port Moody was chosen as the western terminus for the Canadian Pacific Railway. The
port on the Pacific enjoyed this notoriety for two years, until a new terminus was found at Granville, now Vancouver.
Golden Spike Days, held each year over the Canada Day long weekend, celebrates this important part of Port Moody’s
early days. Now a thriving urban community, Port Moody is known for its pristine parks, forested hiking trails, sea- &
lakeside beaches and a very active arts community.
Bert Flinn Park also provides good birdwatching. Warblers, wrens and thrushes are plentiful and Barred Owls
reside in the park.

SPLISH SPLASH AT AN OUTDOOR POOL
Port Moody has two outdoor pools: Westhill
and Rocky Point. Both pools are open June to
late August and offer lessons and public swim sessions.
A spray park is located in Glenayre at Ailsa Park. A second spray park is part of the Rocky Point redevelopment
plan and should be ready for Summer 2005.
RENT ONE OF OUR FACILITIES Port Moody
has several stunning community centres that
are available to rent for weddings, special occasions, conferences and meetings. Call 604-469-4552 for
rental rates and information.
