Notes From the Pastor’s Desk
All Souls Day
On the Feast of All Souls, we pray for the souls of all those who have died. The readings for this
day, all focus on our belief in the resurrection of the dead and Jesus' promise of eternal life. The Gospel story of the raising of Lazarus offers us many important insights about this aspect of our faith.
Jesus was good friends with Lazarus and his sisters, Martha and Mary. Lazarus had fallen ill, and Martha and Mary
had sent word to Jesus. Jesus delays his journey to them, however, and when he arrives in Bethany, he finds that Lazarus is
dead and has been buried for four days.
The scene described at Bethany is a sad one; Lazarus and his family have many friends who have come to mourn his
death. Martha goes out to meet Jesus when he arrives. She cries with him, saying that if Jesus had been there, Lazarus
would not have died. Yet she remains confident that God will do whatever Jesus asks. Jesus consoles her with the promise
that Lazarus would rise from the dead. Martha affirms her belief that there will be resurrection of the dead in the last days.
Jesus promises her even more; he says that he himself is the Resurrection and the life for all those who believe in him.
Martha professes her faith in this, acknowledging that Jesus is Christ, the Son of God.
This is the profession of faith we continue to make, and it is the promise on which we base our hope for eternal life for
ourselves and for all those who have died. In his death and Resurrection, Jesus has conquered death for all those who believe in him.
We believe that we continue to share a relationship with those who have died. When we pray for the souls of the faithful departed, we are praying for those whose souls are journeying through purgatory, being prepared for eternal life in
heaven. We believe that our prayers for them will help to speed their journey to eternal life with God in heaven.
Día de los Muertos
Fr. Matteo

Historically, the Western tradition identifies the general custom of praying for the dead dating as far back as
2 Maccabees 12:42-46. The custom of setting apart a
special day for intercession for certain of the faithful on
November 2 was first established by St. Odilo of Cluny
at his abbey of Cluny in 998. From Cluny the custom
spread to the other houses of the Cluniac order, which
became the largest and most extensive network of monasteries in Europe. The celebration was soon adopted in
several dioceses in France, and spread throughout the
Western Church. It was accepted in Rome only in the
fourteenth century. While November 2 remained the
liturgical celebration, in time the entire month of November became associated in the Western Catholic tradition
with prayer for the departed; lists of names of those to be
remembered being placed in the proximity of the altar on
which the sacrifice of the mass is offered.
The legend connected with its foundation is given by
Peter Damiani in his Life of St Odilo: a pilgrim returning
from the Holy Land was cast by a storm on a desolate
island. A hermit living there told him that amid the rocks
was a chasm communicating with purgatory, from which
perpetually rose the groans of tortured souls. The hermit
also claimed he had heard the demons complaining of the
efficacy of the prayers of the faithful, and especially the
monks of Cluny, in rescuing their victims. Upon returning home, the pilgrim hastened to inform the abbot of
Cluny, who then set November 2 as a day of intercession
on the part of his community for all the souls in Purgatory. From Catholic Online

2. Be a Baptized Catholic; 3. Be living according to the
rules of the Catholic Church. Parents must be active
members of the parish with regular participation for at

or community, they must submit letters of recommendation signed by their pastor stating that they are active
members in good standing of their parish.
Registration for Baptism: Registration and guidance
is available by appointment with one of the parish priests
in the Church office between 9:00 am to 5:00 pm two
months in advance of administering the sacrament of Baptism. A copy of the birth certificate is required at the time
of registration. The preparation class for parents and godparents is the first Sunday of each month at 12:30 pm.
Baptisms are held the last Sunday of the month at 2:30 pm.
Important: Registration must be completed in the
church office with one of the priests.
MATRIMONY
Arrangements must be made at least six months in advance. The Catholic party must be a registered,
active member of the Parish, using envelopes. Call for
appointment.

hospital, nursing home or assisted living, and wishes to
be visited.
