Apprenticeships
Apprenticeships can make your organisation more
effective, competent, productive and competitive
by addressing your skills gap directly. They are
designed to help your employees and future
employees reach a high level of competency
and performance.
All apprentices must be employed, so either current members
of staff or new recruits are eligible. There are different levels
of Apprenticeships that allow your employees to study at
the right level – NVQ Level 2 (Intermediate Apprenticeships)
or NVQ Level 3 (Advanced Apprenticeships). They also
include Functional Skills and, in most cases, a Technical
Certificate. The NVQ is assessed in the workplace and
the Technical Certificate and Functional Skills are normally
delivered and assessed in the College, usually by attending
up to one day a week.
Throughout the Apprenticeship, a Training Co-ordinator
will be able to support and guide you and your employee.
They will work with you to help you decide which Apprenticeship
is right for your employee, explain the way in which the
Apprenticeship works and what funding is available.
The Training Co-ordinator will also carry out regular 12 weekly
reviews of progress with yourself and your apprentice.

The University Centre Yeovil
The University Centre Yeovil was created
to give people in Somerset, Dorset and the
surrounding areas easy access to high quality
Higher Education, allowing them to stay in
employment while continuing their personal
and professional development. The University
Centre’s aim is to give employees the
opportunity to fulfil their potential and gain

make a positive contribution to their

Foundation Degrees
A Foundation degree is a modern, Higher
Education qualification designed to equip
students with the skills and knowledge
employers need now and in the future.
They are designed and developed in
partnership with employers. Foundation
degrees are flexible and accessible
qualifications, valued by students and
employers alike.
Higher National Certificates/
Higher National Diplomas
Higher National Certificates (HNCs) and
Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) are
nationally recognised, Higher Education
qualifications related to specific jobs. They
are skills-focussed rather than academicallyfocussed and can help employees move
into new roles within your organisation or
improve within their current position.
As an employer, taking on a Foundation
degree graduate means choosing someone
prepared for the world of work and able to
apply their skills immediately in your business.
Foundation degrees may also be studied
part-time and offer relevant, valuable
professional learning and development
opportunities for your current employees,
extending their skills and your responsiveness.
HNCs can take one to two years to
complete, while HNDs take two or more
years. However, like Foundation degrees,
students who successfully complete
a HND can apply to top up their qualification
to a full degree at certain universities.
Fees are met by the employer or jointly
by employers and employees. Financial
support is available on a means-tested
basis for part-time students.

FEAST
Mobile Training Unit
We’re Having a FEAST!
Yeovil College is a member of the Schools
FEAST (Food Excellence and Skills Training)
network. This is a national scheme to raise
awareness of healthy eating in schools
and to encourage training for school meal
providers, including school cooks, kitchen
assistants, lunchtime supervisors, teachers,
bursars and employers.
Yeovil College is a lead partner for the South
of England, in partnership with Somerset
College of Arts & Technology.
As part of the scheme, Yeovil College
provides a mobile training unit, which visits
primary and secondary schools across
South Somerset and North and West
Dorset. The unit contains a fully-fitted
kitchen, classroom area and full IT facilities.
The FEAST Mobile Training Unit is
available for commercial hire.

Intermediate Apprenticeship/Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 2/3) Print
These Apprenticeships will help you develop the necessary skills within your workplace
to effectively carry out printing and production processes in the Print and Graphic
Communications industry. You will study a broad range of topics, including health and
safety, communications and working relationships, preparing and operating equipment and
machinery and developing design responses for a variety of production stages for the print
market. Yeovil College offers Apprenticeships in specific strands. Which strand you take

Foundation degree (FdA) Creative Practices – Fine Art
This course aims to encourage and support you as you develop your own individual Fine Art
practice and locate yourself and your work in the context of the area’s vibrant art community.
This course is particularly suitable for those who wish to pursue careers in contemporary fine
art practice, which may include installation, digital media and video or the more traditional
media of painting, print making and photography, or a combination of any of these media.
There is no in-house style and students are encouraged to develop their own practice.
Foundation degree (FdA) Creative Practices – Media Practice
This course focuses on developing the creative, critical, professional and personal skills
required in a competitive and rapidly changing media landscape. The course and methods
of study engage with the contemporary issues and practices which are transforming media
production and consumption. This course is particularly suitable for those who wish to pursue
careers in Media Practice, including independent drama and documentary production and
cross-platform production. You will have the opportunity to work within a range of media,
including video, audio, animation, motion-graphics and interactive media. Experimentation,
enquiry and social awareness are vital elements of the course and you will be required to
develop an investigatory approach in your learning and production practices.

ARTS, DESIGN & MEDIA
Foundation degree (FdA) Print
This is a part-time Foundation degree designed for Print industry employees who wish to
continue full-time employment whilst studying. The course is taught over three years and
applicants must be able to prove that they have suitable employment or a work placement
within a print-related workplace for the duration of their studies. Modules include; Introduction
to the Print industry, Issues & Extended Issues in the Print industry, Sustainability & Materials
for the Print industry, Design & Production for Print Colour Management and The Future of Print.
Higher National Certificate/Higher National Diploma (HNC/HND) Graphic Design
The Higher National Diploma (240 credits), and Higher National Certificate (120 credits) in
Graphic Design have been developed with a specific focus on career progression and are
recognised by employers and the Design industry (British Design Innovation, the Chartered
Society of Designers, the Design Business Association, Design and Art Direction and others)
as a valid and valuable pathway to employment in Graphic Design. There is provision for
specialist study relevant to individual vocations and contexts. This qualification enables
progression to an undergraduate degree or further professional qualifications in Graphic
Design or related areas.
Higher National Certificate/Higher National Diploma (HNC/HND) Performing Arts
The Higher National Certificate (HNC) and Diploma (HND) are highly regarded, nationally and
internationally recognised undergraduate-level courses, equivalent to the first and second
year of a university degree course respectively. The HNC/HND in Performing Arts provides
a specialist work-related programme of study that covers the key knowledge, understanding
and practical skills required in the Performing Arts sector and also offers particular specialist
emphasis through the choice of units. The course includes a range of performance
opportunities, including site specific, musical theatre performance and touring theatre.

Intermediate Apprenticeship/Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 2/3) Accountancy
This Apprenticeship includes an Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) qualification,
the benchmark for the industry. Students study basic accounting skills and knowledge,
how to work effectively in accounting and finance, basic costing, computerised accounting
and professional ethics in accounting and finance. Qualifications in Employee Rights
and Responsibilities and Functional Skills (Maths and English) complete the
Apprenticeship programme.
Intermediate Apprenticeship/Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 2/3)
Customer Service
These Apprenticeships focus on five key areas; Customer Service Foundations, Impression
& Image, Delivery, Handling Problems and Development & Improvement. During the
intermediate course, you will learn how to provide effective customer service and support in
a customer service environment. The advanced Apprenticeship gives you the opportunity to
assess the principles of customer service delivery and ways of developing and improving the
customer service process.
Intermediate Apprenticeship (Level 2) Business Improvement Techniques
This innovative, cross-functional qualification is designed to support the overall effective
operation of businesses. There are two pathway options, Process Improvement or Quality
Improvement. The course is suitable for semi-skilled workers and apprentices in a variety
of industries, particularly manufacturing and engineering, and anyone responsible for
contributing to quality and process improvements in the workplace.
Intermediate Apprenticeship/Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 2/3)
Business Administration
The intermediate Apprenticeship in Business Administration is aimed at students working
in an administrative role, while the Advanced Apprenticeship will help you further
develop your knowledge regarding the range of relevant work roles and the personal and
interpersonal skills required to work effectively in the sector. These courses are as versatile
as organisations are diverse, with core modules focussing on management, business
improvement, working in the business environment and communication. Students choose
from nearly 50 optional units at Level 2 and approximately 100 at Level 3 to create
a combination to suit the business.

Intermediate Apprenticeship (Level 2) Contact Centre Operations
This course is designed for entry level Contact Centre employees providing customers
with remote support for products or services, e.g. online or via telephone. It will give you
the opportunity to learn, develop and practice the skills required to make an effective
contribution in the Contact Centre environment.
Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3) Management
This advanced Apprenticeship is ideal for first line managers with a range of responsibilities,
such as allocating work to team members/colleagues/contractors, achieving specific results,
managing financial and physical resources and some decision making. The qualification aims
to give learners an opportunity to develop their management performance to become more
effective within their organisation and progress their career. Core modules focus on Planning
& Allocating Work for the Team, Managing Personal Development, Setting Objectives and
Supporting Team Members.
Intermediate Apprenticeship (Level 2) Team Leading
This course has been designed for Team Leaders who have some personal autonomy and
responsibility and collaborate with others to deliver work. It gives learners the opportunity
to develop the core competencies needed by Team Leaders in the dynamic, business
world. Core units focus on Managing Personal Development, Working Relationships with
Colleagues and Communicating Information & Knowledge.
Intermediate Apprenticeship/Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 2/3) Retail
This apprenticeship is suitable for those in a variety of roles within the Retail sector,
ranging from sales assistant, stockroom assistant and visual merchandiser to team leader,
department manager and senior sales assistant. Apprentices learn a range of skills which are
key to roles in the industry and transferable to all retail companies and other departments
within the same organisation.

Intermediate Apprenticeship (Level 2) Warehousing & Storage
This Apprenticeship is designed for students working in a Warehousing, Distribution
and Storage environment. During the course, you will develop skills in a number of related
specialist areas so that you can operate more effectively in your working environment.
Areas covered include; Health & Safety, Developing Effective Working Relationships
and Checking Stock Levels.
Bookkeeping for Small Businesses – Stage 1
This course will teach you the basics of manual bookkeeping for small businesses. You will
learn how accounts are produced and what they mean, including VAT, profit and loss and
taxation for the self-employed.
Bookkeeping for Small Businesses – Stage 2
This course will develop your understanding of accounts for small businesses. You will look
at topics such as balance sheets, cash flow forecasting, PAYE and business planning.

SAGE Computerised Accounting
This course gives you a good working knowledge of SAGE, which is the leading computerised
accounting package. It covers setting up a system, creating accounts for customers and
suppliers, entering routine data, processing and reconciling bank transactions, producing
management reports and accounting for VAT.
AAT Level 2 Certificate
This is a nationally recognised accounting qualification which is sponsored by three main
accountancy bodies. Accounting technicians work at all levels of finance and accounting and
jobs are advertised requiring this qualification. It is a qualification in its own right but learners
may use it to advance on to other accountancy qualifications. Advice and guidance is given
regarding this in the final year. The course aims to relate theory of Accounting to the practical
work learners undertake. The units covered are: Basic Accounting 1, Basic Accounting 2,
Basic Costing, Computerised Accounting and Working Effectively in Accounting & Finance.
AAT registration fees are payable direct to the awarding body.
AAT Level 3 Diploma
The Diploma is recommended to learners who have achieved the AAT Level 2 Certificate
or equivalent. The units covered include: Accounts Preparation 1, Accounts Preparation 2,
Cash Management, Costs & Revenues, Indirect Tax, Professional Ethics in Accounting &
Finance and Spreadsheets. AAT registration fees are payable direct to the awarding body.
AAT Level 4 Diploma
This Level 4 Diploma is designed for those who intend to work at all levels of finance and
is designed to give learners practical accounting skills that they can use in the workplace.
Some accounting technicians work as accounts clerks; others go on to become managing
directors or finance directors of well-known companies. AAT registration fees are payable
direct to the awarding body.

Business Improvement Techniques
The Business Improvement Techniques (BIT) NVQ is a work-based qualification that supports
the implementation of improvements within companies. These improvements are based on
well-known and proven lean manufacturing techniques, such as waste elimination, 5S/5C
workplace organisations, effective team working and statistical process control. These are
a range of units that can be selected to suit your individual company needs which will help to
ensure that the improvements are sustained. This course is only available in the workplace.
BTEC Diploma (Level 5) Management & Leadership
This seven-unit, Level 5 qualification provides a specialist work-related programme of
study that covers the knowledge and skills required for working successfully in middle
management. The core unit provides essential underpinning knowledge and skills and the
six specialist units have been selected to allow you to obtain a rounded programme of
development. Units include: Principles of Management & Leadership, Managing Marketing,
Management of Change, Managing Innovation, Recruitment & Selection, Managing Budgets
and Managing Communications at Work.
Minute Taking Skills
This course is designed to build confidence and develop the skills necessary to take notes
and produce minutes of meetings. Topics covered include: Active Listening Skills, Note
Taking & Summarising, Layout of Agenda and Minutes. Delegates will actively participate in
a meeting, take notes and write a full set of minutes.
Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS)

City & Guilds 2395 Certificate in Periodic Inspection,
Testing & Certification of Electrical Installations
Previously part of the City & Guilds 2391 qualification, the City & Guilds 2395 Certificate
specifically covers periodic inspection, completion of the EICR forms, relevant paperwork
and the practical aspects of inspection and testing existing installations. The qualification is
based on the Electricity at Work Regulations (EAWR) BS7671 17th Edition Guidance Note 3:
Inspection and Testing and is assessed via a written examination, an online multiple choice
test and a series of practical assessments.
City & Guilds 6129 Certificate (Level 2) Plumbing Studies
Successfully completing this two year course leads to a City & Guilds 6129 Certificate in
Plumbing Studies. This is an opportunity for you to gain the basic knowledge in plumbing,
bathroom installation, hot and cold water systems, lead work and working with low carbon
pipe work. You must attend both evenings. Fees are payable each year.
Certificate (Level 3) Plumbing
The Level 3 Plumbing qualification covers both the technical knowledge required to work
as a qualified plumber and the necessary workplace practical skills. The course covers cold
and hot water systems and heating and gas systems. You will need to have a good level of
prior knowledge or be qualified to Level 2 and be employed within the industry so you can

This course is for anyone working in a care setting. You will need support from your
placement in order to achieve this qualification. You will be allocated individual assessment
time with one of our vocationally qualified assessors who will guide you through the award
and observe you in the workplace during your course. This Level 2 course is run over three
terms. This qualification is also offered as an Apprenticeship.
Diploma (Level 3) Health & Social Care
This course is intended for those working in a care setting in a supervisory or key worker
role. Please note that all workers in the sector need CRB clearance. You will need support
from your placement in order to achieve. You will be allocated individual assessment time
with one of our vocationally qualified assessors, who will guide you through the award and
observe you in the workplace during your course. This Level 3 course is run over four terms

HNC/D Health & Social Care
This course is designed to develop the academic skills and vocational qualities required
in Health & Social Care practice. You will combine work experience or employment with
theoretical classroom-based study throughout the course to provide a valuable insight into
a variety of work settings within the Social, Health and Welfare services.

Certificate (Level 1/Level 2) Mental Health Awareness
This qualification is designed for a wide range of learners who wish to raise their
understanding of mental health. It is particularly relevant for those working in a variety of
settings within the public, private, voluntary and community sectors. Learners complete
a workbook with tutor support.
Foundation degree (FdA) Early Years
This is a sector-endorsed and accredited course of professional development specifically
designed to develop personal understanding, knowledge and skills of education in a wider
context. It is aimed at those already supporting teaching and learning within Early Years and
is designed to enhance practice in the workplace. Peer-to-peer support is encouraged, as is
workplace mentoring.
Diploma (Level 5) Leadership in Health & Social Care and Children & Young
People’s Services
This qualification gives you the opportunity to build on both your management and care
skills, allowing you to help more people. It also fulfils the regulatory requirement for those
looking to become managers of children’s homes or adult residential services. Units studied

IOSH Managing Safely (Level 2)
The IOSH Managing Safely course is designed for managers and supervisors in any organisation
or sector and is unlike any other. The course is full of step-by-step guidance and has a sharp
business focus, offering you a highly innovative format and content which inspires, critical to
getting essential health and safety messages across.
NEBOSH Certificate
This is the most widely held Health & Safety qualification in the UK and meets the academic
requirements for Technical membership (Tech IOSH) of the Institute of Occupational
Safety & Health (IOSH) and Associate membership (AIIRSM) of the International Institute of
Health & Safety Management (IIRSM). It is designed for managers, supervisors and staff from
all types of organisations who need a broad understanding of health and safety issues. The
qualification is divided into three units: NGC1 Management of Health & Safety Issues, NGC2
Controlling Workplace Hazards and NGC3 Health & Safety Practical Application. There are
two intakes a year, in September and February, and each course runs for 14 weeks.

Intermediate Apprenticeship (Level 2) Hospitality Services
This course is designed for students working in the Hospitality industry who have a variety
of duties encompassing food production support, food and beverage service, housekeeping
and general customer service. You can take units across a range of services, focussing on
either a cooking or non-cooking pathway.
Intermediate Apprenticeship (Level 2) Housekeeping
The Intermediate Apprenticeship (Level 2) in Housekeeping is aimed at students currently
working in the industry or about to accept work in the general Housekeeping environment.
This course will help you to develop your skills in a number of key areas, including Cleaning
& Maintaining Floors, Maintaining Supplies, Cleaning Windows, using Chemicals in
Housekeeping and Customer Service.
Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3) Hospitality Supervision & Leadership

This Apprenticeship will help you to develop skills in a number of areas including; Safe &
Hygienic Working Practices, Food & Beverage Service Techniques and Customer Service

develop and practice the skills required in a range of Hospitality environments. Through the
course, you will also develop creative thinking, numerical and communication skills, as well

Professional Cookery
These Apprenticeships will help you develop your skills in a number of areas, including; Cookery,
Food Hygiene and Kitchen Safety. At intermediate level, you will learn to prepare and cook basic
dishes, including soup, fish, meat, poultry and vegetables. The advanced Apprenticeship allows
students to build upon this training and develop their cooking skills further so that they can

dishes, together with how to plan menus effectively, taking into account nutrition, cultural
influences and food trends, which will help you to pursue your training to become a chef.

This Level 2 Apprenticeship is designed for learning support staff, such as Teaching

Certificate (Level 4) Leading the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment
Processes & Practices
This course is suitable for qualified assessors wishing to become internal verifiers. It will
enable you to operate and evaluate internal assessment and quality assessment, support
assessors, monitor the quality of assessors’ performance and meet external quality assurance
requirements. It builds upon the Level 4 Award and is concerned with assuring the quality of
assessment and planning and with allocating and monitoring the quality of work in your area
of responsibility. It is, therefore, of particular relevance to those staff whose job role includes
managing the assessment procedures and practices within their part of the organisation.
Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector
This course is designed to give you a basic knowledge of current legislation relevant to the
practising teacher, basic planning of the teaching and learning process, equality and diversity
issues in the classroom, the development of functional skills, setting ground rules and
developing resources.
Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector
This one year, part-time course is designed for those who are teaching in the Lifelong
Learning Sector in the ‘Associate Teacher’ role as defined by LLUK. It requires you to
achieve four units of varying credit values and meets the requirements of ATLS with the
Institute of Learning.
Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector
The Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS) is a part-time course
designed for those who are teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector in the ‘full teacher’ role as
defined by Lifelong Learning UK. The qualification is designed to support the development and
acquisition of the skills, knowledge and practice required of the full teacher role.

Learners Paying in Full
Paying your course fees ensures your place.
As such, you must pay your fees when you
enrol on your course. You can by:

Learners Paying by Instalment
An instalment plan is available to home
learners whose tuition fees are over £250.
At enrolment, you will need to make an
initial payment of 25% of the course fees,
followed by three equal consecutive
monthly payments by credit/debit card or
cheque. Please note that if you miss an
instalment payment, you will be charged
an additional £25 administration fee. If you
miss two instalments, you will be required
to pay the entire outstanding balance of
the fees or withdraw from the course.
Low or Few Formal Qualifications
If you have not already got a qualification
similar to GCSEs or NVQ Level 2 and you
are aged 23 or under when you start your
course, then you may be eligible for a fee

Sponsored Learners
When a learner has indicated that their
employer will be liable for their course fees,
the employer will be invoiced. Employer
Declaration forms are available, if required,

employer. If this situation arises, the learner
will be invoiced directly within seven days
of enrolment.
