About Clawson’s 1905 Restaurant & Pub
Clawson’s 1905 Restaurant & Pub opened its doors in 1977 as Clawson’s Emporium, Cookery and Saloon. The restaurant occupies what used to be Clawson’s grocery and bakery, built by Charles Clawson in 1905. The store was more
than a spot to pick up groceries. The Clawson’s also delighted customers with freshly baked goods and a soda and
ice cream shop. After Clawson’s grocery and bakery closed during the Great Depression in 1934, the building was
home to several retail businesses. After sitting empty for several years, Bill and Candy Rogers bought the building and
opened the Emporium, Cookery and Saloon.
Throughout its 38 years on the Beaufort Waterfront, Clawson’s has been family owned and operated.The
Rogers exited the business in 1985 when Fred and Joyce McCune bought the business and
changed the name to the current Clawson’s 1905 Restaurant & Pub. Joey McClure came on as a partner and general manager in 1989 and has operated the business for 25 years.
Clawson’s decor is a blend of curiosities from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The McCunes are avid antiquers and built
the collection over the past few decades. Many of the signs on the walls are examples of product advertising found in stores
like Clawson’s grocery and bakery. A full history of the building is available at the host stand and online at
