what is global warming?
WHAT IS GLOBAL WARMING?
It is the phenomenon of increases in
average temperature of atmosphere
and sea at Earth’s surface.
The phenomenon of global warming
started to become a concern in the
late ‘60 when the industry started to
develop and the greenhouse effect
gases started to increase.
The scientists claimed that the world
temperature would rise by 1.1 – 6.4°C
in the 21st century.
It is a worrying fact that this climate
scenario shows that the polar areas will
get warmer and
warmer, which will
lead to dramatic
consequences.
CAUSES OF GLOBAL WARMING
The increase of CO2 in the
atmosphere in the last centuries,
the density of which has doubled
due to the industrial revolution.
The bulky deforestation that has
as a crucial result the increase of
noxae density eventually leads to
global warming and destruction of
the ozone layer.

EFFECTS OF GLOBAL WARMING
Serious lack of water because of the
melting icebergs that may affect about
3,4 billion people by 2080.
EFFECTS OF GLOBAL WARMING
Famine due to drought, soil degradation
and salinization might affect
other 600 million people.
A high percentage of plant and animal
extinction.
OTHER EFFECTS
Heat - consequence of global warming implies high risks for population’s health,
especially in urban areas where the
temperatures are higher.
It may lead to death for
people over 65. This
category of people are the
most vulnerable to heat.
Scorch may also cause
natural disasters such as
forest fire which can lead
not only to losses of big
areas of forests and woods,
but also losses of human
lives.
The Erosion and the
destruction of soil organic
material.
OTHER EFFECTS
OTHER EFFECTS
TORNADOES are caused by the same weather
phenomenon that triggers the floods in Australia and
Brazil. One of such tornado was called La Niña and it
created violent storms because of high temperature
differences between the East and West of the Pacific
Ocean.
WHAT WE CAN DO TO PROTECT THE
ENVIRONMENT
Retimbering – may partially solve the issue of
carbon dioxide
Wise use of cement - a ton of cement
releases into atmosphere a ton of CO2
Efficaciousness of electricity and heating
energy production by increasing the output.
Reduction of fossil fuel quantity used.
The use of non-polluting energies.
Reduction of polluting emissions
of factories and power plants.
The conversion of CO2 into
fuel, in other words recycling
it; this technology is being
tested by a company in California.
Earth Hour
It started in 2005 in Sidney,
Australia. Since then more and
more countries have embraced
the request of turning off the light
for an hour for the last Saturday
in March each year.135 states,
Romania included, took part in
this event last year.
Earth Hour is a method of fighting against the
climate changes and an attempt of drawing
attention to the necessity of consumption
reduction. It is an action we all can take for a
more responsible behaviour.
IN ROMANIA
 On individual level:
- We save electricity by:
- Replacing the old, consuming light bulbs
with energy-saving ones;
- Turning off the light, switching off the TV/
radio when we leave the room;
- Unplugging our home appliances when we
don’t use them.
IN ROMANIA
 On individual level:
- Saving paper and water;
- Recycling paper, plastic, metal and glass;
- Not wasting the food;
- Not throwing harmful/poisonous garbage in
the trash bin;
- Keeping the waters, parks and forests clean.
IN ROMANIA
 On local level:
- Collecting old home appliances campaigns;
- House heating insulation programmes;
- Specific waste containers throughout the
town;
- Sensor lights used by local institutions,
houses and block staircases.
IN ROMANIA
 On national level:
- A higher use of non-polluting energies;
- Campaigns to rise people’s awareness
concerning the importance of saving
resources, recycling, cleanliness in public
places;
- Prohibition of filament bulb marketing and
encouragement of the energy-saving one.
IN ROMANIA
 On national level:
- On-line payment (electronic bills ) – saves
paper;
- National programmes that encourage the
purchase of new, energy-saving cars by
recycling the old, polluting ones;
- The factories and power plants follow strict
rules to protect the environment.
IN ROMANIA
 In our school:
- Projects and competitions:
- “The Green Month” Project, part of
retimbering national programme” called
‘The Forest Month”;
- “The Forest – “treatment” for polluted
environment”;
- Ecological Project – “The Students –
clean ambassadors against polluted waters”;
- “Be Green for your Future!” Project;
- “Be ECOlogical!” Project;
- “The Energy Stories ”Symposium”.
IN ROMANIA
 In our school:
- Ecological activities: parks, forests, river
banks;
- Waste collecting activities;
- Recycling of old and used batteries, light
bulbs and neon lamps;
- Planting trees projects.
