Exeter celebrates 20th year of Arbor Day plantings

Saturday marked the 20th
year of Arbor Day celebrations for the City of Exeter.
Each year on the third Saturday in April, the Exeter Tree
Board plants a tree in the city
and has a get together.
Twenty years ago, the
group began by planting 37
trees throughout the city
park and school and has
planted at least one each year
since. Exeter also earned the
recognition as part of Tree
City USA, a special recognition for cities participating
in community forestry in the
United States.
The Exeter Tree Board is
a group of volunteers who
get together four to six times
a year to vote on issues related to community forestry
and appropriate the funds
allocated by the Exeter City
Council for the new tree they
plant each year.
Certified arborist and
consultant Kirk Wynns has
been helping the board since
the first tree plantings 20
years ago. He also takes responsibility for ensuring that
the trees get watered during
droughts and planning where
trees need to be planted. He
also helps the board with a
list of champion trees in the
area, which are the largest

Wynns said, “I just help
guide them and lead them in
the direction they need to go
with their plans.”
Wynns also takes responsibility for watering the trees
during droughts and keeping watch over the condition
of the trees in the city. Dur-
Legislature approves Sater’s welfare reform bill

Both the House and
Senate approved a welfare
reform bill this week, sponsored by Cassville’s Senator
David Sater. Senate Bill 24
was created to reinstate work
requirements as encouragement for self-sufficiency and
also allocates funds to aid
welfare recipients.
Sen. Sater stated, “As
with so many of our social
welfare programs, the current TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families)
program is too often a disincentive to work and fails
to provide the structure and
path needed for recipients
to reach self-sufficiency. We
are good neighbors and help
one another out, but we also
believe in personal responsibility and that a hand up, not
a hand out, will lead to success.”
The work requirement
requires welfare recipients
to participate in the definition of work provided by the
1996 Welfare Reform Act as
unsubsidized employment,
job searches and community services. For families on
TANF, the new life-time limit
means that families can only
take benefits for 45 months,
and they must engage in
work requirements before receiving benefits. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance
Program (SNAP) currently
allows for states with a certain unemployment level to
have a waiver for the work
requirements before receiving benefits. The new bill
removes the waiver and reinstates all work requirements
for SNAP benefits, as well.
Furthermore, the savings
to the state by implementing
the new work requirements
will be applied to other social programs in the state.
Savings from both TANF
and SNAP will be used to
provide child care assistance
for single parents, education
assistance, transportation assistance and job training for
individuals receiving those
benefits.
The need presented for
the welfare changes in Missouri are due to Missouri’s
repeated low ranking on the
Heartland Institute’s scores
on welfare reform. Missouri
scored an “F” on the 2015
Welfare Reform Report Card:

the 1996 Welfare Reform Act

the success and dignity that

Cassville hires new
middle school principal

In a special school board
meeting this morning, the
Cassville R-IV School District hired Jimmie Barton
as the new middle school
principal. Barton is currently
employed with the Ballard
School District in Butler.
Barton will replace Melanie Stringer who turned in
her resignation last month
after taking a paid leave of
absence. Stringer’s resignation is effective June 30. She
was the middle school principal for the past two years
after one year as the principal
at the intermediate school
and two years as the middle
school assistant principal.
Barton was hired contingent on being let out of
his current contract with
the Ballard School District.
At the board meeting, Jill
LeCompte, Cassville assistant superintendent, said,
“He got out of his contract I
believe last night, and he has
nearly 20 years of experience
under his belt, so we’re excited.”
LeCompte said that the

district received roughly 24
applications for the middle
school principal position
and a team of middle school
teachers selected eight to interview. LeCompte continued, “Then they got those
down to two that they recommended.”
The position of middle
school principal has a salary
of $72,000 for the 11-month
contract.

Burglar strikes Cassville
business Monday night

According to the Cassville
Police Department, a burglar
struck two businesses, one
successfully and one unsuccessfully, sometime on Monday night.
Police Chief Dana Kammerlohr confirmed that
someone broke into Burchfield Tax Service on Sale Barn
Road and stole an undisclosed amount of cash. Kammerlohr said, “They broke in
through a back door, and the
business discovered it when
they got there Tuesday morn-
ing.”
The burglars also attempted to break into Geraldi’s
restaurant, but were unsuccessful.

Every year, the Barry
County E 9-1-1 Center hosts
an award ceremony for the
dispatchers and other employees. This year’s event included a cook out and band
Ripplin’ Creek performed.
They started the award
ceremony by announcing a
new incentive program that
involves all of the employees. The program consists
of earning tokens to receive
things such as time off.
The awards are meant
to honor the employees for
their hard work and dedication throughout the year.
Rusty Dilbeck won the new
Agency Recognition award,
along with the best sense of
humor. Janelle Brattin won
Most Positive Attitude. Kandra Connolley won Blooper
of the Year and Most Improved Telecommunicator
award.

sick time. She has a positive
attitude and is constantly
striving for excellence.”
The Center also held an
open house earlier that day
where community members
could tour the facility.
Correction: In last week’s issue of the Advertiser, an article stated that 10 Barry County natives are listed on the
Vietnam Veterans Memorial at the College of the Ozarks.
However, it was brought to attention that one other native
is also on the wall and was overlooked because his city of
residence was not listed as in Barry County.
Williams James Hutton, of Cassville, was a petty officer
second class in the U.S. Navy. His tour of duty began December 22, 1968. Hutton was killed on the ground in Quang
Tri Province, South Vietnam, on March 14, 1969.

rounds of ammunition for their choice of handgun to bring

Wilma Ruth, known to
most, was considered a sweet
person. She always had a
smile to share, a laugh that
brought joy to your soul. Her
only fault in this life was she
had her father’s temper and
her mother’s stubbornness.
Wilma Ruth (Bradley)
Brisco left this worldly domain to join those of her
family already established in
heaven on Tuesday, April 14,
2015, at Cox South Hospital,
Springfield.
Wilma loved her flower
beds, her children and grandchildren. The greatest joy was
to watch the eagles who landed in a tree on the hill.
On the morning of her
death, she had been driven
through the memories of her
past: swimming in the creek
as a child with the Sheets children, walking the hills and
hollars of Hailey and Galena,
picking wild berries, and visiting her grandparents, Eldbert and Etta Bell Madison.
Wilma Ruth Bradley married Louie S. Brisco on December 24, 1953. She graduated from Cassville High
School May of 1954, following
her husband to Kansas Army
Base until his enlistment ended. From there she followed
him to Fort Bragg, California,
where on July 19, 1955, she
presented him with twin girls,
Jenise Isley and Janice Kyle.
In 1959, they picked up stakes
moving back to Missouri. A
son, Keith Brisco, would be
born, September 24, 1962.
On April 7, 1965, Louie
Brisco was killed leaving a
young widow to raise three
children. They are Jenise Evelyn Isley and her husband,
Randy, of Cato, Janice Kyle
and her husband, Pete, of Republic, Missouri, and Keith
Brisco, of the home.
Wilma Ruth Brisco was
preceded in death by her husband, Louie, of ten years, her
parents, Arthur and Virginia
(Madison) Bradley; three
sisters, Christine Haddock,
Freda Osborn, and Shirley
Wren; one nephew, Bradley
James Wren; and one grandson, Jimmey Lee Isley.
She leaves behind four
grandchildren and soon to be
great-grand son.
Funeral services were held
at 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 17,
2015, in Fohn Funeral Home,
Cassville, Pastor Doyle Russell and Pastor Lonnie Stockton conducted the services.
Burial was in Clio Cemetery,
Jenkins.

17, 2015. Mr. Loudermilk,
son of Charles Bert and Ida
(Slankard) Loudermilk, was
born on December 17, 1929,
in Greenwood, Ark. He was
a 1948 graduate from Northwest High School in Detroit,
Mich., and later graduated
from Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas with
a Bachelors of Arts degree in
Biblical Ministry. He became
a resident of Barry County in
1979. On January 30, 1948,
he was united in marriage to
Christine Norman, in Detroit,
Mich. and to this union two
children were born, Cynthia
“Cindy” and Mark; she preceded him in death on February 5, 1954. He married
Carolyn Diane Webber on
November 13, 1954, in Detroit, Mich., and to this union
four children were born, Karen, Nelson, Jon, and James;
she preceded him in death on
November 2, 1998. On August 2, 2002, he was united in
marriage to Carolyn “Carol”
L. Hall in Washburn; she preceded him in death on March
28, 2015.
Mr. Loudermilk began his
career of ministry in 1961 as
a Church of Christ minister
in Jacksonville, Ill., he later
continued it in Shell Knob,
and Exeter. He also worked
as a printer for the Chrysler Cooperation and Abilene
Christian University. Mr.

The Arvest Room, part of
a new addition being added
to Central Crossing Senior
Center, will be available for
events hosted by the Center.
The new addition will include a dining area, four additional rooms, an exercise
facility and additional storage. The Arvest Room is just
off the current main dining
room.

Donation Program” to help
fund the addition’s construction. Sponsors are allowed to
name the room and provide a
display within the room.

be larger and will add a third

Davis said. “It will be larger,
newer and nicer than what
we have now.”
The Boy Scouts Troop 76
of Cassville will be hosting
a day of free events to help
raise awareness for their
troop.
The event will be held
on Saturday, May 9, from 9
a.m. to 2 p.m. at the American Legion hut located on
south Highway 112 in Cassville.
Activities of the day
will include archery, shoot
bb guns, slingshots, water
rockets, roasting hot dogs
and racing pine wood derby
cars.
The event is free to any
families in the surrounding area with boys ages 6 to
18 years old. The event is
family-oriented, so younger siblings and sisters are
welcome to participate.

Cassville family serves as missionaries in South Africa

By the time you are reading this, William Tahoe and
his family will have returned
to Johannesburg, South
Africa and resumed their
work as missionaries. Tahoe
(name has been changed out
of concern for his safety), his
wife Leigh, and their three
children, Bethany, Bentley
and Benjamin, are Cassvillians living overseas while
they work to bring the gospel to the people over there.
Originally of California,
William and Leigh came
to Cassville with Bentley
in 2004. By this time, they
had already done extensive
work as missionaries in Latvia, China and Bolivia but
decided to settle in Barry
County and became members of First Baptist Church
of Cassville. They continued to live in the area for six
more years, during which
time Bentley and Benjamin
were born, and decided to
return to mission work in
2010. William and Leigh
found a new mission field
in Johannesburg, and they
remained their for three and
a half years, returning four
months ago for furlough.
As one might expect,
living in a foreign land requires a number of adjustments, and South Africa is
no exception. Bentley, 14,
and Benjamin, 12, say there
is a huge English influence
on the local culture, so many
things we speak of here have
different names over there.
“They call French fries
‘chips’ and chips ‘crisps,’ and
so on,” Bentley said.
Benjamin related a story
about a time he and a South
African boy were having
lunch together. When Benjamin told him he was eating a peanut butter and jelly
sandwich, the boy thought
the idea was revolting. Benjamin gave him a piece of his
sandwich, and the boy said
“It tastes like peanut butter
and jam.” Benjamin added,
“Jelly means Jell-O over
there.”
Language is not the only
adjustment the Tahoes have
had to make. Johannesburg
has a high crime rate, so security in the region is very
high. “Whenever you go

to the mall, you have a lot
of security checkpoints, or
you see a guard at the gate.
When you leave the grocery
store, they want to see your
receipt, and the houses have
panic buttons,” Leigh said.
There are some sacrifices
living in South Africa for the
Tahoes as well. Bethany, 16,
along with Bentley and Benjamin, was home-schooled
until arriving in South Africa and had been prepared
to leave for sometime before they actually went to
South Africa. But she was
sad about leaving her relatives behind in America, as
well as leaving First Baptist
Church. She jokingly added
that she also misses Jolly
Ranchers.
According to Bethany,
being a missionary kid
(MK) can be somewhat like
being a military brat. “Being
an MK, you do get a lot of
friends that come and go, especially if they’re other missionary kids,” she said.
Despite the difficulties, William and Leigh are
making a huge impact in
their mission. William is
a computer expert, and he
repairs computers for other
missionaries. Some of these
missionaries come to Johan-

remotely via a satellite link.
William also travels into
other countries as well.
Many of these countries do
not allow missionaries within their boarders, so he must
travel as a computer technician. William risks being
deported or even executed,
if it is discovered that he is
a missionary while inside
some of these countries.
The Tahoes also are having an impact locally. William and Leigh volunteer
at camp on the weekends
where they teach the Bible
to children, and they also
hold a Bible study at the local high school during the
lunch hour. The kids there,
according to Leigh, are hungry to hear about the Gospel.
Leigh’s favorite memory
of their work in South Africa involves a time when she
gave away some of Benjamin’s old clothes to children
in a school, and one boy got
a sweater. “He was so proud
of that sweater, and he want-

people to take and seriously
pray for us, because we have
seen when that happens,
God moves, and people can
know Christ as their savior,”
he said. “When you pray
specifically for certain people, you see God act.”

On April 15, the Barry
County Sheriff ’s Department hosted a going away
party for Officer John
Luckey. Luckey served in
Barry County for seven
years and was the Drug
Task Force Commander
from 2007 to 2011. Luckey
is also a retired U.S. Marine
and
previously worked
in Jasper County. He has
served a total of 19 years.
The
Southwest Missouri Drug Task Force deals
primarily with narcotic investigations in the area.
The task force is funded by
a grant for both McDonald
and Barry Counties. The
Barry County department
is in the application process to find a replacement
for Luckey’s position. Recently, he has been putting
on demonstrations for organizations and colleges
about the uses of meth and
other harmful drugs in the
area. Sheriff Mick Epperly
said, “He will be missed
very much.”
Luckey’s new plans are
to move to Florida and
start a security agency
business. John’s wife, Jennifer, is a resource officer
in the Cassville school district. She will finish out the
school year and then leave
to join John in Florida.
Luckey is looking forward
to starting this new adventure and seeing what the
future holds. Luckey added
that his time spent serving
in Barry County has been
quite an adventure.

Megan Leonard, formerly
of Purdy, was inducted into
University of Central Missouri Athletic Hall of Fame
on February 14. Megan attended UCM in 2008 to 2009
and played on the Jennies
Softball team.
Megan was a First Team
All-MIAA selection in both
of her seasons with the Jennies Softball. As a senior, she
was the MIAA Pitcher of the
Year, selected All-American
and Senior Female Athlete of
the Year.
As a junior, she was a
Second Team All-Region
selection. She is the Jennies
all-time leader in ERA with a
1.07 earned run average, she
is second in career strikeouts
with 592, just 47 shy of the
all-time record which is held
by a four-year player.
She ranks second in shutouts (21), fourth in saves (5),
fourth in winning percentage
(.745, 38-13), sixth in innings
pitched (393.2) and eight in
career wins (38).
Megan holds the top
two single-season strikeout
marks in UCM history, including 303 her junior season. Her 20 wins in 2008
are the fifth most in a singleseason in program history. As
a senior in 2009, she led the
Jennies to their first MIAA
title since 2002.
Megan attended Crowder
College in 2000 to 2007
where she also holds the all
time strikeout record along
with the single season strikeout record.

Southwest Trap Team holds Trap-A-Thon
The Southwest Trap Team
held their annual Trap-AThon on April 12 at the
Southwest High School trap
range in Seligman. The annual function is held to raise
money for the trap team.
In addition, this year the
shooters were in a competition for positions on the varsity, junior varsity and junior
high teams which will compete on May 2 at Linn Creek
in the Missouri State Shoot.

with their local urban forester Jon Skinner, who works
for the Missouri Department
of Conservation. Skinner
helps to coordinate the community’s efforts as well as
many other communities in
the area.
As a Tree City USA city,
Exeter is one of only 86 cities
in Missouri that have earned
the distinction. To be a part
of Tree City USA, they have
to meet four requirements of

board or department, have a
community tree ordinance,
spend at least $2 per capita on
urban forestry and celebrate
Arbor Day. Exeter is one of
the three smallest population

Golden Museum opens for the season with new displays, artifacts

Museum has been a hidden
treasure in Barry County.
With collections ranging
from Native American arti-
facts to record-holding mineral samples to toys and war
memorabilia, the museum
has something for everyone.
Tuesday marked the opening day of this season, and
new additions to the collection are sure to excite patrons again.
The Golden Pioneer Museum is owned by Winfred
and Lee Ona Prier who have
spent a lifetime acquiring
collections for the museum.
During the off season, the
couple travels and is always
on the lookout for a new
piece or two to add the collection. Winfred enjoyed
collecting things over the
years and, eventually, decided to open the museum
so that others could enjoy
the artifacts, as well. It didn’t
take long for the Priers’ rep-
utation to become known,
and they are sought out by
collectors who don’t want
their treasures to fall into
hands that wouldn’t appreciate them.
Winfred said, “Sometimes we will have someone call us because they’ve
heard of the museum and
have something they want
displayed.” The Priers travel
all over purchasing collections to add to the museum
and to keep the artifacts new
and interesting for visiting
patrons.
Some of the items new
to the museum this year include a huge Apatosaurus
thigh bone as well as an ancient preserved fish and reptile from the same period. In
another room is a bear skull
from the same collection.
This year there is a special Shriners exhibit up for
the first time, as well. The
collection, which was acquired from Shriner Frank
Fusco, of Mountain Home,
Ark., includes pins, Bibles,
commemorative
glasses,
bells and much more. Even a
special women’s Shriners hat
is included in the display.
Last fall, the museum
opened a brand new 2,700
square food addition to
house new collections, including a huge Native Amer-

The beauty of the Golden Museum is the variety
of artifacts on display. Antique tractors, countless
types of glassware from over
the years, collectible lunch
boxes and African artifacts
also adorn the shelves inside. Spending a whole day
pursuing the five rooms still
wouldn’t allow one to see ev-
ery artifact on the shelves.
The best way to understand
the sheer volume of collections inside the doors is to
visit for yourself.

The Cassville Area Chamber of Commerce will host
their 8th annual Golf Tournament and Luncheon on
Friday, May 15.
The luncheon will be begin at 11:30 a.m. for $7.50 per

need to play in the tournament.
The tournament is a fourman scramble and is $200
per team. Flights will be determined based on the number of teams. Cash prizes will

Mulkey, a senior at Washburn High School, is the son
of Bruce and Janie Mulkey.
He is a member of the Southwest Region at Washburn FFA
Chapter. His chapter advisors
are Chris Hunt and Rachel
Brown.
Mulkey‚s supervised agricultural experience program
began when he started contacting individuals to see if
they needed scrap metal removed from their property.
He initially would clean up
properties in exchange for
scrap metal that he would take
to recycle centers. He learned
how to sort scrap metal, copper and aluminum to maximize. Mulkey has also learned
effective money management
techniques and customer
communication. He has developed an interest in land beautification and the operation of
heavy equipment.
As an FFA member,
Mulkey has attended national
and state FFA convention. He
also has received his Chapter
FFA Degree.
Outside of FFA, Mulkey is
a member of student council,
National Honor Society, and
the Fellowship of Christian
Athletes. He has also played
baseball.

Southwest students explore career options
Southwest students recently received visitors from
the local office of Microsoft and IMPACT Group in
partnership with Southwest
PTO’s efforts to introduce
students to the career possibilities available to them.
Fourth grade students
were treated to a variety of
demonstrations by Microsoft employees such as Parik
Savjani and Colin Page. Savjani showed the students the
history of computers and
hardware to give them a little bit of background while
Page played mouse mischief
with the kids. Brian Shaffer
and Craig Monarch demonstrated Xbox and other
Microsoft devices. Nicole
Liedka and John Solliday
demonstrated Movie Maker
and Skype translator to give
the kids an idea of just how
technology can expand the
borders of their worlds. Finally, Kevin Dahl demonstrated Bing as well as coordinated the fourth grade
event in conjunction with
Kara Hendrix from Southwest.
Kevin Dahl also presented to Mrs. Pruitt’s 8th grade
Transitions class along with
local IMPACT Group Manager Shellie Dahl. Kevin
and Shellie discussed the
importance of exploring
a wide array of career options. Southwest PTO President Shellie Dahl said, “We

business partnerships as another avenue to introduce a

Purdy’s March Character Kids
Purdy Elementary Principal Janet Boys announced the character education medal winners for
the month of March. In partnership with elementary counselor Gary Jurgensen, Purdy’s kindergarten
through fourth grade teachers present a different character trait each month. At the end of the month,
each teacher nominates one student who best exemplifies the trait presented. These students receive
character medals at a special assembly.
In March, students focused on Perseverance. March medal winners are fourth graders Stephanie
Webb, Leanna Roberts and Joe Robinson; third graders Jeremiah Williams and Caleb Stanford; second
graders Karma Kessinger, Zoey Webb and Jackson Hilburn; first graders Rose Wilson, Kaylee Dotson
and Levi Breazzeal; and kindergartners Brennan Hawkins, Naydelin Elias and Alyssa Dodson.

Barry County courts send 14 to prison in March
fender. Barrientos was given a suspended execution
of a three-year incarceration sentence, 480 hours
community service and five
years supervised probation.
In April 2014, the Missouri State Highway Patrol
pulled Barrientos over for
driving at an extremely low
rate of speed on MO-37 in
Purdy. When he pulled him
over, the trooper noticed a
beer bottle and empty carton in the vehicle. Barrientos failed multiple field
sobriety tests and, when
given a breathalyzer test,
had a blood alcohol level of
0.172. Barrientos had two
prior DWI convictions.
Barientos is to serve
probation until March 19,
2020.
• Jerry Manuel Beck, of
Golden, pled guilty to distribution of a controlled
substance. Beck was sentenced to five years incarceration with the Department of Corrections.
On November 24, 2014,
the Barry County Sheriff ’s
Office found over 50 grams
of methamphetamine in
Beck’s residence on Kestrel
Court in Golden. There
were also syringes and other forms of drug paraphernalia.
• Hank F. Bevis, of
Stotts City, pled guilty to
physically taking property
appropriated from a victim.
Bevis was sentenced to five
years incarceration with

the Department of Corrections.
On June 17, 2014, officers with the Monett
Police Department were
dispatched to the Monett
Walmart for pushing a cart
full of merchandise out of
the store without paying for
it. When asset protection
stopped Bevis to ask him
about the cart full of goods,
he shoved the employee
aside and fled.
• Scott William Boden,
of Cassville, made an Alford plea to possession of a
chemical with the intent to
manufacture a controlled
substance. Boden was given
a suspended imposition of
sentencing and three years
unsupervised probation.
Boden was arrested following an investigation
done by the Southwest Missouri Drug Task Force in
October 2013. When officers approached a residence on Wayne Drive in
Cassville, they detected a
strong chemical odor. Officers found a shake-n-bake
methamphetamine lab in a
trash can beside the trailer
where Boden was cooking
with another person.
Boden is to serve probation until March 24, 2018.
• Gordon E. Carey, Jr.,
of Billings, pled guilty to
receiving stolen property.
Carey was sentenced to
four years incarceration
with the Department of
Corrections.
In January 2013, Carey took a vehicle into
Slinkard’s Salvage to sell for
scrap. The vehicle had been
stolen from Springfield the
day before and a match was
made by the VIN number.
• Pedro E. Castaneda,
of Monett, pled guilty to
possession of a controlled
substance and unlawful
use of drug paraphernalia.
Castaneda was sentenced
to four years incarceration
Corrections for the possession charge and 60 days
incarceration in jail for the
unlawful use of paraphernalia charge with credit for
time already served.
Castaneda was stopped
by the Missouri State Highway Patrol in December
2014 when a trooper recognized him as a frequent
driver while his license was
revoked. A search of the vehicle yielded methamphetamine and loaded syringes.
• Charlie Lynn Crow,
of Cassville, pled guilty to
substance. Crow was given
a suspended execution of a
five year incarceration sentence and five years supervised probation.
Crow is to serve probation until March 16, 2020.
• Christian Sky Crum,
of Cassville, made an Alford plea to assault in the
second degree. Crum was
given a suspended imposition of sentencing with
three years supervised probation.
In June 2013, Crum had
three others help her to lure
someone to a pre-planned
location for an assault and
robbery. Two people picked
the victim up in their vehicle with the impression
that they were going back-

roading. Then, Crum and
another person ordered the
victim out of the vehicle at
gun point before kicking
and punching him until he
fell on the ground. Then
they stole his wallet and cell
phone.
Crum is to serve probation until March 17, 2018.
• Sarena Leigh Donahoo, of Cassville, pled
guilty to resisting or interfering with the arrest for a
felony. Donahoo was given
a suspended execution of a
four year incarceration sentence and five years supervised probation.
Donahoo and another
person broke into a home
on East 5th Street in Butterfield and stole clothing,
jewelry and a jewelry box.
The value of the property
was estimated at less than
$500.
Donahoo is to serve
2020.
• Christopher Lee Hile,
substance and unlawful
use of drug paraphernalia for methamphetamine.
His probation was also
revoked on a possession
of a controlled substance
charge that stemmed from
an arrest in 2007. Hile was
sentenced to five years incarceration for each of the
two possession charges and
for the drug paraphernalia
charge.
On January 25, 2014,
officers with the Monett
Police Department observed Hile walking in an
alley. When officers tried

to question him, he fled
and entered a residence on
County Road in Monett.
Upon a search of the residence, officers found Hile
hiding in the attic with a
container with 13 syringes,
baggies of methamphetamine residue, two digital
scales, two glass smoking
pipes, three spoons with
residue and two measuring
spoons.
• Thomas Jason Holland, of Purdy, made an
Alford plea to domestic assault in the second degree.
Holland was given a suspended execution of a five
years incarceration sentence and five years supervised probation.
On May 12, 2014, Holland physically assaulted
his wife and child in their
home on Farm Road 2100
in Purdy. Holland picked
the child up by the shirt
and threw her out of the
bedroom and also held his
wife down on the bed and
struck her in the face.
Holland is to serve probation until March 16,
2020.
• Samantha Ray Hostetter pled guilty to possession
of a controlled substance.
She was given a suspended
imposition of sentencing
and five years supervised
probation.
On May 2, 2014, Hostetter was in a vehicle stopped
by the Missouri State Highway Patrol for speeding.
A search of Hostetter’s
purse yielded a glass smoking device, a plastic straw,
metal spoon and a syringe.
Hostetter confirmed that
the crystal substance was

• Patty D. Ashby, of
Monett, pled guilty to two
counts of theft/stealing of
less than $500. Ashby was
given a suspended imposition of sentencing, two
years supervised probation
and 40 hours of community
service to be completed by
November 1, 2017.
In May 2014, Ashby and
other adults had her juvenile children push shopping carts full of merchandise out of the Walmart in
Monett without paying for
it on two separate occasions. She admitted that the
adults were responsible for
the plan to steal, and that
she had participated in it.
Ashby is to serve probation until March 17, 2017.
• Jinifer L. Babcock, of
Garfield, Ark., pled guilty
to theft/stealing of less than
$500. Babcock was given a
suspended imposition of
sentencing and three years
supervised probation.
Babcock was arrested
in February 2014 when the
Cassville Police Department was dispatched for a
theft at Walmart. Babcock
had stolen $1,108.92 worth
of merchandise and still
had it in the car when officers contacted her about
the crime.
Babcock is to serve
2018.
• Daniel Barrientos, of
Purdy, pled guilty to DWIAlcohol as a persistent of-
methamphetamine.
Hostetter is to serve
2020.
• David Ruddell Kinsey, of Springfield, pled
guilty to unlawful use of a
weapon and property damage in the first degree. He
was sentenced to four years
incarceration with the Department of Corrections.
On October 4, 2010,
Kinsey and another man
fired weapons at a vehicle
and residence on Farm
Road 2100 in Purdy. The
damage to the vehicle was
more than $750.
• Jason Allen Kramer,
of Verona, pled guilty to
tampering with a motor vehicle in the first degree and
12 counts of theft/stealing
of $500 to $25,000. Kramer was sentenced to four
years incarceration on each
charge with the Department of Corrections.
Between July and October 2014, Kramer and
another person stole from
at least 12 different residences in Barry County
around Monett and Verona.
Items included lawn mowers, furniture, a safe, valuable coins, guns and more.
Officers recovered many of
the stolen items at Kramer’s
residence in Verona.
• Howard R. McWaters,
Shell Knob, pled guilty to
unlawful use of a weapon.
He was given a suspended
execution of a three year
incarceration sentence and
five years supervised probation.
On May 16, 2014, officers arrested McWaters for
shooting his shotgun while
intoxicated on the lawn of
his trailer in the Viola trailer park/subdivision. Officers found shotgun shells
and a half-empty bottle of
vodka.
McWaters is to serve
probation until April 22,
2020.
• Curtis Paul Musick,
of Washburn, pled guilty
to non-support with the
total arrears in excess of 12
monthly payments. Musick
was given a suspended imposition of sentencing and
five years unsupervised
probation.
As of January 2013, Musick was in total arrears of
$25,016 in child support.
Musick is to serve probation until March 16,
2020.
• Dalton E. Nelson,
Purdy, pled guilty to three
counts of distribution of a
controlled substance and
burglary in the second degree. He was sentenced to
120 days shock incarceration of a five year incarceration sentence.
On January 13, 2014,
Nelson sold a gram of methamphetamine to an undercover officer at Cleveland
and 3rd Streets in Monett.
• James Preston Nunley,
III, of Purdy, pled guilty to
non-support with the total arrears in excess of 12
monthly payments, passing a bad check of $500 or
more, six counts of forgery,

and theft/stealing of $500
to $25,000. Nunley was
sentenced to three years incarceration.
As of August 2014, Nunley was in total child support arrears of $23,324.28.
He wrote numerous bad
checks and also wrote a
check on a fake bank account.
• Cody Lane Oplinger,
of Seligman, pled guilty to
substance. He was given a
sentencing and five years
On September 26, 2014,
the Missouri State Highway Patrol stopped to find
a vehicle at the Sugar Creek
bridge with music playing,
a phone in the seat, but
no driver. After looking
around, the trooper found
Oplinger and another man
hiding from him. In the
vehicle were methamphetamine and multiple items
of drug paraphernalia.
Oplinger is to serve
2020.
• Zachary Gilbert Parrett, of Monett, pled guilty
to a stealing-related offence
as a third offense. He was
sentenced to three years

On July 28, 2014, Parrett took a cart full of items
from the Monett Walmart
without paying for them.
• Courtney L. Perryman, of Seligman, pled
guilty to leaving the scene
of a motor vehicle accident. Perryman was given
a suspended imposition of
sentencing, two years supervised probation and was
ordered to pay restitution.
On June 8, 2012, Perryman hit a vehicle at Mill
Street and State Highway
76. Perryman then left the
scene of the accident because she did not have current insurance.
Perryman is to serve
2017.
• Howard Lee Perryman, of Monett, pled guilty
to receiving stolen property and made an Alford
plea theft/stealing of $500
to $25,000. Perryman was
sentence to seven years
Perryman was seen
driving two different stolen
vehicles. Officers matched
tire prints up to another
crime where 14 Black An-
suspects, Schmidt fled because of a warrant.
Then in January 2014,
the Missouri State Highway
Patrol investigated a residence on County Road for
alleged drugs. Schmidt was
found to have methamphetamine and paraphernalia.
In September 2014,
Schmidt fled from the police again and when he was
found, he was in possession
of burglary tools and methamphetamine and paraphernalia in his backpack.
Schmidt is to serve probation until March 5, 2020.
• Vernon Jeffery Surratt, of Aurora, made an
Alford plea to three counts
of receiving stolen property. Surratt was given a
sentencing, 100 hours of
community service and five

multiple sentences, ranging from three to five years
incarceration each, he must
successfully complete the
CRISP program, and serve
supervised probation for
five years.
In December 2011, the
Monett Police Department
investigated the Murphy
USA where male subjects
were cat calling the clerk.

• James Shigeo Yoshimoto, of Cassville, pled
guilty to possession of a
controlled substance. Yoshimoto was sentenced to
Corrections.
Yoshimoto was arrested
in October 2014 when officers found him passed
out behind the wheel of his
vehicle with methamphetamine and syringes in plain
sight. He also had a twoyear-old in the car who was
not buckled in a carseat.
