GREETI N G S SENT T O THE GA T H E R IN G,
1951
By
SIR MAL COLM MACGREGOR OF M ACGREGOR
H ereditary Chief
AM ERI CAN CLA N GREGOR S OCIE T Y
EDI N CHI P, LOCH E AR NH EAD, SCOTLAN D.
To the Am erican Clan Gre gor Soc iety, Gr eet ings:
It gives me great pleasure to send you thi s message on th e occasion of your
forty-second Gat herin g. Y our Chieftain, Com modore J ohn H olmes Magrud er ,
has kindl y sent me a copy of the programme of th e pr oceedings and I onl y
wish with all my heart that I could be with you in the flesh as well as in th e spirit .
It has been a matt er of deep regr et to me th at I have neve r been able to
attend one of your ga ther ings in per son, but I hope ver y mu ch that I ma y be
able to do so on some future occasion.
An nua l ga theri ngs are, I think, an impor tan t part of Clan acti vities, as th ey
br ing together Clan s fo lk fr om all ove r th e country an d prov ide an oppor tunity
for persona l contac t and th e maki ng of frie ndships which are th e backbone of
Clanship, and wh ich wou ld not othe rwise occur.
In th ese unsettl ed and difficult days t he Cla n fee ling whic h has per sisted in
spite of all vicissitudes is mor e than ever valuab le.
Last month we had a specia l family ga t hering at ou r home her e in Balquhidder fo r the Christening of ou r firs t grandchild, our only dau ghter 's son.
Our boy, Gr egor , who is th e Scots Guards, has recentl y. returne d fr om ser vice
in Malaya , so our fa mily re-union was comp lete.
To you and your fa milies I send my love and good wishes with the hope
th at you may have a very happy and successful ga the ring.

F rom a lett er- T ell the Commodore and t he General, an d all the Others,
that I will be th inking of you during the Ga theri ng and that I am ge nuinely
so rry I cannot be with them. The Baby ha s six teeth and weighs over thirty
pound s, and is the finest specimen of manh ood I ever saw. H ope to have him
at one of th e Gat he ri ngs before too long.
W illiam Marion Ma gruder, Chi eft ain 1936-1941.
Mrs. Ma gruder and I deeply regr et that we cannot be a part of the Clan
Gath ering this year. W e especia lly had looked fo rward to th is particular meet ing with out splendid ne'f Chieftain, Commodo re Magruder. May you have a

It distre sses me to have to write you that I am aga in in the H ospital and
facing an operation on October 20th, which if successf ul, .which I confidentl y
expect , will yet make it impossible for me to att end th e Clan Gathering, as we

T HE EVENING SESSION
Oc tober 26, 1951
Just outside of th e Burg undy Room was the "Registration Desk", which was
opened up at 6 o'clock. Before this time some of th e Clans men were already th er e,
and by 6 :30 quite a crowd had gathered in the lobby of th e hotel, greeting each
other and enjoyi ng themselves to the fullest exten t. Ma ny of th e guests and
members, especially the ladies, were in evening dress; and this added an additio nal
not e of color to the occasion.
Short ly after 7 o'clock the guests began to for m a line fo r entrance int o the
Bur gundy Room where th e Buffet Suppe r was to be served. Eac h table was
numbered, and all guests were assigned to tables, as reservations were made, th e
seating was g reat fac ilitated. P iper J ames Garriock played th e bagpip es while
th e trad itional "Haggis" w ith alI the trimmings and the Scotc h were carried by
waiters who held th e two precio us items high on trays while th ey paraded down
the center aisle of the dining room and then around it. Of course, some of th e
guests had never tasted th is ancie nt Scottis h dish, and it was interestin g to wat ch
the reacti ons of some of these, as they took the first mouthfuI. It is tasty and
nouri shing, and must have aided considerab ly in mak ing the older Scotsmen as
hardy as th ey wer e.
The evening session was calIed to ord er by the Chiefta in, Commodore Magruder, at 8 :45, at which time the group j oined in singing " Loch Lomond ." Prayer
fo llowed by th e Chaplain, Rev. Enoc h Magrude r Thompson.
The Chieftain made his annual addr ess, which was cut short for two reasons :
first, because he was ill with a severe cold; and second, he desir ed to give more
time to the Guest Speaker, the Rev. George MacPherson Docherty, D. D., pastor of the New York Avenue P resbyterian Church, W ashingt on, D. C. The
Rev. Docherty began talking in a casua l manne r with bit s of hum or popping up
her e and ther e. He said that doubt less most of the persons in th e audience were
already wondering how a man with a name like his had managed to get into a
Scotti sh Gathering; but, continued he, "in spite of th e name, I can claim Scott ish
Ancestr y." H e explained th at his mother was a Miss MacP herso n, thi s being the
name of one o f the importa nt Clans of Scotland, and that she was quite proud of
her ance stry. He next told us a bit of history of himself. H e was born in 1911,
in Glasgow, Scotland ; educa ted at Glasgow U niversity, gra duating in 1935 with a
Masters Degr ee and in 1938 with a Bachelor of Divinity Degree. Hi s first ministry
was at Sandyhills Church, Glasgow, 1939-44. From 1944 to 1947, he was Mini ster Co-adjutor at th e Baro ny of Glasgow, doing special youth work under the
Iona Youth Trust. In 1947 he was sent to North Church at Aberd een, Scotland,

of th e land and politica l situations that ha ve made her and her people what they
are today.
Mr. William Young, Secr eta ry of "The Saint Andrews Society," was presented and a sked to bring us g ree tings.
Miss Rey nolds read some o f th e gree tings fr om absent members , as there was
ROt time to r ead an of them.
Mr . J ohn Alaster MacGregor of Stafford, V irginia, treated us again, with one
of his or igina l songs . This one he said was for the benefit of the younge r member s
of th e Clan .
The meeting adj ourned with an pre sent joining hand s and singing "Auld La ng

Octobe r 27, 1951
The weath er smil ed upon us thi s day, for it was mild, clear and sunny; an
idea l fan da y, the kind that makes one joyously g lad to be alive.
The Pil grimage this yea r was back to An napo lis, the Capital of the Free
Sta te of Maryland, which has nurtu red and rear ed so many of the members of
ou r Society. Most of the members who reside in th e vicinity of W a shingt on, D. C ,
fined their ca rs with out-of-tow n gue sts and drove dow n to thi s city. Many followed the scenic and historic "O ld Defense High way" so nam ed because back
during the \Var of 1812 it was along this road th at th e br ave Maryland farme rs
hid themselves and fired from amb ush upon th e " Red Coat s" as they ma de an
unsuccessful attempt to reach Washing ton , the Capita l o f th e U. S. A.
W e assembled a t the State H ouse (Capi to l Building) , at 10 :30 A. M. , where
th e ea rly arrival s wandered leisur ely about the building and beautiful ground s.
When an had gathered, we wer e escorted to th e Old Senate Chamber, th e one
occupied by th e Colony of Mar yland , and now pre served in its ori gina l sett ing as
an historic shrine. F rom there we went to th e " New Senat e Chambe r," where
Mr. Roger Thomas, Assistant A rchivist of the H an of Record s, told us the "Story
o f the Char ts of th e Ancestors of A lexa nder Magruder ." These Charts have been
placed in a vau lt und er his custody. N ext we wen t upstairs where the entire group
was most g raciously received by Govern or T heodore R. Ma cK eld in, a handsome,
ver satil e Scotsman, an orator who cha rmed all of us with his well-chosen words
and beautiful phrases, deliver ed wit h a mild S cotti sh Brogue. He per sona lly conduct ed us th rou gh his pr ivate offices and told us about some o f the painti ngs and
pieces of furniture th at he pri zed. When th e tour was over he shook ha nds with
each one pre sent as we bade him goodb ye and th an ked him for his gracious
courtesy.
From the State H ouse we pr oceeded several block s to 132 Charles Street, the
home of a former Chief tain, the Rev. J ames Mitchell Magruder , D. D ., Mr s.
Magruder and Mi ss Lou ise Magruder. H er e in their dr awing room we re dis-

played th e three remarkable "C harts of the Ancestors of Al exander Magruder ,"
compiled and executed by Oli ve Magruder Smith Pope (Mrs. R. S., J r.), of
Dunw oody, Georgia. One would have to see these Charts in order to fully app reciate th e time, effort and talent it took to produce th em. In th e short time that we
were ther e, it was impossible to get othe r than a curso ry glance at them ; but Mr s.
van den Berg told us that they are all hand wri tt en with not a visible era sur e, itlustrated beaut ifully in water color s, and th at Mrs. Pope spent 20 years collecting and
assembling th e data for th em. In addition, she also said th at any member of the
A.c.G.S. is eligible to joi n the "In terna tiona l Society of th e Daught er s of th e
Baron s of Runnymede," th e " Nati onal Society of Magna Chart a Dames," or any
other orga niza tion that consists of persons who can trace their ancestry back to
one or more of the Ba rons who forced K ing John to sig n th e Magna Charta at
Runn ymede in the year 1215, au then ticity for this eligibility coming through the
evidence produced in these Cha rts, for more tha n one of th e ancestors of Alexander
Magruder ar e tr aced back to the Barons.
After leaving th e Rever end Magruder's home we pr oceeded to th e Naval
Ac adem y Officers' Club where Clansmen and th eir fr iends partook of a most
delicious luncheon. T he remainder of th e day we were guests of the N aval
Academ y. After luncheon we went to th e Chapel, where a sho rt service was
conducted by the Min ister , assisted by the Reve rend J ames Mitchell Magruder.
After Chapel, there was a choice of touring th e Nava l Acade my, Athletic Contests, or a tour of th e water fron t by launch. A maj ority of the gro up chose th e
wat er -front tour , which prove d to be very delightf ul as well as enlightening.
Upon arrival back at the wharf, th e sun was almost ready to set ; so most of us
hurried back to our car s with a very deep feeling inside that this had indeed been
"A Perfect Day ."

GREETINGS FROM THE CHIEFTAI N
COMMODORE J OH N
H.
M AGRUDER, JR.,
Re tired
FELLOW CLA N S ME N AN D DI STI NG UI SHED G UESTS:
Thi s mark s my bapti sm as your Chieftai n. I grea tly fear th at I may disappoint you in that I shall not be ab le to live up to th e golden voiced ora tory of
my predecessor from Mississippi.
But I do wish to express my appreciati on of th e honor best owed upon me in
electing me your Chief ta in and to again ass ure you that I dedicate myself to
the work of the Clan to th e best of my ability.
In th ese most difficult and trying days when it seems that th ere is so much
wron g with the W orld-we hear on every hand the appea l for strong leader ship.
The Scots a re a hardy race and in spite of certain- sha ll we say "oddities" attributed to th em-they have in the past a nd we tru st that they always sha ll sta nd out
for their honesty, high char act er and ideal s. We may do much-this relati ve littl e
society of ours-to help pr eser ve th ese ideals and promote true f reedom, clean
governm ent , and peace.
The designati on Clan, carries with it in my mind , a ga thering of kindre d souls
united in a common ideal. And so-let us dedicat e th is evening to good fellowship
and looking forward to th e dawn of happi er days.
I would like in closing to read to you portions of a lett er received fr om one
of our clan smen, rath er clanswomen, who, like a good Moslem to Mecca, recent ly
made the pilgr image to the grave of Rob Roy. I tru st you will enjoy it as much as
I, it helped put me in a very good mood :
"W e are travellin g on to Scotland on the night tr ain , dawn break s, the sun
comes up over the hills. A t 6 :20 A. M. I descend on the platform of Balquhid der. Br acing mount ain a ir, the high mountain s of P erthshir e all ar ound . A
drive of 6 miles to Loch V oil. I find it difficult to descri be the rea l thrill I felt
in finding myself among th e Br aes of Balquhidder and the Rob Roy country at
last.
" I went all out MacGregor ; and felt as if I had come home.
" It was really quit e strange-this feeling, I mean, of belong ing ther e. I felt
so well physically, and so happy . It is a place of exquisite beaut y. Nothing to
mar it-away fr om everyt hing. Balquhid der itself is a tiny village- just a few
whit ewashed cottages-very neat with lovely flower s in the fr ont ga rdensphlox in so many bri ght color s. Th e ru ins of the ancient church a litt le way up
the mountainside-with the prese nt church nearby-and th e old g raveya rd where
Rob Roy, his wife and son lie buri ed. The views in all directions ar e too beautiful
for word s. Scotland is unique. All th e far mers and th e village people I talk ed
to at Balquhidder wer e such splendid people with per fect mann er s, dignit y and
independ ence of spiri t which is so characteri stic of th e Scot."

she began writing stories based on histori cal facts. All of her books were histor ical or had historical settings. To list a few : W hite Gua rd to Satan, Long
Tim e Ago in Mar yland and Virginia, A Virgi nia Scene, and The Heart of Old
Virgin ia. She contributed to such magazines as Atlant ic Month ly, St. Nic holas,
and Southerne r. H er poetry may be found in man y of our early Year Books.
A s auth or and poet she did much to preserve folk lor e of Maryland and
Virginia, which would otherwise have been forgotte n. She was an auth ority
on her family history as well as the histor y of Prince Willi am Count y, Virginia.
Much of the latter she had first hand from her grandfather, who as a lad of
ten had witnessed the burning of W ashington by the British. H e too, spoke of
listening to his fa ther, Squire J esse Ewe ll, telling of his fri ends and kinsmen,
Wa shington, J effer son, Mason, Pa rson W eems, Dr. Craik, John Adams , also
the 'H eaths and J ansills, and many others.
Her sister-in-law, who was our mother, used to say of her, "She is so mild
in her judgment. It is hers to defend, not criticise."
A s the year s go by her memory will remain a beautifu l picture of a rea l
lady of the South to enrich the lives of all who were so fortunate as to count
her as a friend. Loyalt y and devotion were two of her dominant characteri sticsloyalty and devotion to her church, to her family, th e Clan Gregor Society, to
the United Daughters of the Conf ederac y, and to every cause she espoused.

Born at Edge Hill, near H ickor y Gr ove, Prince \ Villiam County, V irg inia,

she no doubt was ear ly steeped in McGregor lore. Her brother J esse (ou r first

home with their gra ndmother while she lived with her father.
Edge H ill remained her home during her long and use ful life. For many
years she was connected with the Epi scopal Hi gh Sch ool, A lexandria, V irg inia,
where a number of generations of boys remember her moth erly ca re and ki ndness .
A fte r leaving the H igh School she returned to Edge H ill and was acti ve in
her church and the 8th V irg inia Regiment Chapt er, U nited Dau ghters of th e
Confederacy. For forty years (4D) she was the chapter's secretary. Rat her
she was the Guiding Angel, and at her death th e members promised to "carry
on for Miss Ma ry's sake,"
She was a devout Christ ian and every Chri stian Faith had her richest blessing.
A s a loyal Episcopalian and member of Grace Chape l, at each wors hip service,
she personally saw that eve ry littl e det ail was correct.
As the boys a t the High School loved Miss Ewell, so the childre n at Grace

Robert Wa lter and Carri e J ane (Sims) Magruder. T went y-two days afte r his
birth, his moth er passed away and "Ma rtin" was raised by his grandparen ts, \ViIliam McD onald and Rebecca J ane ( H armon ) S ims, and two aunts- half siste rs
of his mot her-Fannie and Ida Neal .
H e was educated in the public sc hools of Claiborne County , Chamberlain
H unt Academy and the Un iver sity of Mississippi, where he majo red in civil
eng ineering. Upon his return from college he worked a short while as an eng ineer,
but lat er took over the mana gement of his two farm s, "Hollyhill" and "T he
Colony."
On Novembe r IS, 1905, he was married to Kat heri ne Cra ne Daniell , who
preceded him in dea th about eighteen months. Th ey were blessed with six devoted childre n: J ohn Martin, I r., now of Pasadena, T exas; Ka therine ( Mrs .
R. W. Wh itfield), of St. Lou is, Mo. ; Agnes (M r s. F rank O scar Coleman) , of
Barcel ona, Venezuela ; Robert Walter, of P otter Valley, Calif.; Maj . Samu el
Bert rand, now sta tioned in P uerto Rica; and Thomas Daniell, of McComb , M iss.
In 1912 Martin was elected as Circuit Clerk of Claiborne County, Mi ss., and
served fou r years in thi s office. After selling his farms , Hol lyhill and The
Colony, he moved to his aunt's farm, "Albena," which he later inher ited, and
became associated with the Mississippi South ern Bank of Port Gibson, first
as assista nt cashier and lat er as cashier. I n 1925 he wa s appoint ed Assista nt to
th e President of the Federa l Land Bank, of New Or leans, La . Because "she
did not want to raise her chi ldren in a city," "Sister Ka te," as we called his wife,
would not move to New Orl eans and remained in Po rt Gibson, living at "Albena"
and looking af ter th e plantation she had inher ited, "Windsor." A s a consequence,
Martin maintained a home in New Orl eans where his wife and famil y often
visited and he was a regular commute r fr om the city.
In 1927 Martin was named Vice-President of th e F edera l Intermediat e Cr edit
Bank of N ew Orl eans, and in 1933 assumed the Presidency of th e institution,
which position he held at his deat h. Duri ng th e last few yea rs of his life, he
also served as General Agen t of the Farm S ecuri ty Adm inistra tion.
Th is, bri efly, is a histor y of Martin Ma gruder's life. But as my broth er ,
th ere is much, much more that a histor y could not reveal. Having finished college about th e time of my birth and mar ried shortly thereafter , ther e is littl e
I remember of his early ma rr ied life.
My first recollection of "Brother" was when, as Circuit Clerk, he would
ride to town on his horse and take his noon meal in our home. Duri ng the noon
hour , he would buy marb les f rom me and then we wou ld play "k eeps." Although
he usually won, he gave my marble s back and I kept the nickel also. Hi s generosity continued until his death .
A ft er our sister, Fannie, married, our other brother, Lauc h, had gone to
F lorid a to work, and I had run off fr om school and joined th e Navy, our fat her
sold our home and with our mother went to live with Fannie. After several months
in the Navy my age was found out and I was discharged and sent home. It
was th en that I went to live with "Brother." Th is was my first intimat e relation with him and I became, not just a broth er, but one of his immediat e family.
I call ed m y~1f "helper " wit h the cattle on the place, but thi s I did only when

it suited my convenience and did not interfere with my hunting, fishing, swimming, or any other diver sion I might find. I received a weekl y allowance, even
perh aps more genero us than his own children, all of wh ich I had to account to
him for th e following week. Ind eed, I considered him more of a fath er than
a broth er.
The mar vel to me when I went to live with him was, the rest of his "f amily."
There were he and Sister K at e, six children, myself , Aunt Ida , "Cousin" Priscilla Magru der, who was Sister Ka te's aunt, and Mary Dani ell, a cousin of
Si ster Kat e's ; twelve of us, and ther e was never a time he did not seem most
pleased to have all of us a round him.
A ft er he moved to New Orl ean s, he never lost inter est in any of his broth er s
and siste r, and his home in New Orlean s was open to us th e same as to his immediate famil y.
What Martin Magruder accomplished in his lifetime I think was best expr essed in an editorial appearin g on th e front page of "T he Stap le Cotto n Review"
of June, 1951. Th e edito rial was written by the H on. Alf H. Stone, one of
Mi ssissippi's most beloved citizens; long time Chairman of the Mississippi Sta te
Tax Commi ssion, and Director in the F ederal Land Bank and the St aple Cotto n
Associat ion. Among other things the editoria l says:
"In the death of Martin Magruder , southern ag riculture has lost one
of its finest f riends. ' Ve use th e term advisedly. He was fine in every
way . H e was by inherit ance, instinct and tr adition, a gentleman and a
planter. H is business connections, par ticularly his banking expe riences
and contacts, gave him an insight into th e vita l par t which prod uction
cr edit played in the history of Amer ican Agriculture, and particularly th at
of th e agricultura l South. H e was identified with th e Fede ra l Farm
Credit Syst em for mor e than twent y-six year s. . . . In all the relations of life, as son, husband, fath er and f riend, Martin Magruder measur ed up to the highest standa rds to which the social ord er of the South
has attained."

THE STORY OF THE CHARTS
of the A ncestors of
ALE XANDER MAGRUDER
By
OLIVE MAGRUDER SMITH POPE
D U N W OODY, GEOR GIA
The St or y of the Chart s, if ther e is one, began with the American Clan
Gregor Year Books, the MacGr egor line in the 1923 Yea r Book, and the P roof
of the Marriage of Alexander 1st and Lad y Margaret CampbeIl (widow of
Sir Andrew Drummond), furnished by the Scribe in 1929, page 81. T his gave
me confidence to begin my search because th e MacGregor line in the Year Book
is broken .
I then sta rted with Burke's Peerage and found the unsatisfactory line there,
and th en by accident I came acr oss O'Harts Iri sh Pedigr ee, and there in Vol.
II , page 234, was th e MacGregor line leading to the family of Grier. It is noteworth y that the wives of the MacGre gor Chiefs are known before those of the
earl y Kin gs of Scotland.
I then began with the Campbells. Th eir origin is also to be found in O'Harts.
A friend I met at the Library told me about the Peerage of Scot land by Sir
Robert Douglas, and Anderson's Ancien t Peerage.
After I found the beam, as it was, I began looking for unusua l ancestors
like Robert the Devil and Ida the Flame-bear er , Thorfinn the Sk uIl Cleaver,
not to mention Lad y Macbeth's son Lu lac. I balanced them with Saint Margaret
and Berth a and the Bishop of Metz. Thi s was fun .
At the Libr ary I found the book "Magna Charta," by J ohn S. Wu rt, and severa l
other books. In them I found many of our ancest ors wit h corresponding dates.
I sent to Mr. Wurt our line to Gilbert de Clar e and to several other Barons
and th e work was accepted by him. About a year later I received an invitation
to join the National Society of Magna Cha rter Da mes. My Baronical Lineage
had been proven correct. No more research was necessary. To say I felt honored
would be an under statement. I felt that this was a compliment to th e whole
American Clan Grego r Society.
W e have lines fr om the foIlowing Magna Charta Barons: H ugh Bigod, Sr. ,
Hu gh Bigod, Jr., Richard de Clare, Gilbert de Clare , Willi am de LanvalIei,
Sa ire de Quincy and Robert de Vere.
Am ong our ancestors mentioned in the body of Magna Charta as fri ends of
Ki ng John , are William, Earl of Warren ; Alan de GaIloway, Constab le of
Scotland, and Hub ert de Bur gh.
I have almost completed five genealogies, the Royal Ancestor s of Alexand er
Magruder. They a re each writt en fro m the viewpoint of nativ e historians. The
first, "Kin gs of Scotland and th e Seven Earls," another will be "Ro yal Ance stor s
