HUMILITY
Have you ever been in a group of
people—maybe on a tour, at a social
gathering, or at church—and
discovered that you have just been
talking with a well-known author,
corporate CEO, great scholar, or
politician? Your first thought is the
hope that you didn’t say anything to
embarrass yourself; but your second
thought is how much they seemed like
such “regular” folks. What is it that
makes people seem so “regular”?
Today’s readings give us a clue when
they stress the importance of humility.
It is so hard for us not to tell the first
person who will listen how busy we
are, how hard we work, how much money we donate, and how important our
job titles are. We think these accolades make a difference to people, and if
we don’t tell them, how will they ever know? But if our actions demonstrate
our values, people will recognize our worth on their own. The words of Jesus
show us how much better it is to let someone else recognize our worth than
to be embarrassed because someone did not.

van a saberlo? Pero si nuestras acciones demuestran nuestros valores, la
gente reconocerá lo que valemos, por sí solas. Las palabras de Jesús nos
muestran que es mucho mejor dejar que los demás reconozcan nuestros
méritos que apenarnos porque alguien no los reconoce.

Dear Ministry Volunteers,
The summer is quickly coming to an end
and it is once again time to plan for the
upcoming events of the Fall.
We would like you to mark your calendars
for a MANDATORY FALL MINISTRY NIGHT
meeting on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at
7:00 pm in the church.
Fr. Ray has invited Bishop Joseph A. Pepe,
D.D.J.C.D. to speak to all of our liturgical
ministers regarding volunteering within the
Catholic Church. This meeting is extremely
important and Fr. Ray has asked that
everyone attend. Some vital information on
doctrine and Canon law will be discussed in
regards to ministry and there will be an
opportunity for questions and answers after
the Bishop has given his presentation. If you
are unable to be there that evening we ask
that you personally notify either myself or Fr.
Ray (702) 871-1904 as soon as possible.
As always, we truly thank each of you for
your presence. Without you and your gift of
time and selfless giving we at Christ the King
could not do what we do for the members of
our parish and our liturgies and prayer would
suffer.

As we follow Christ on our
faith journey, we reflect:
Today we hear of the wedding banquet where all
are invited to attend: the worthy and unworthy.
We are challenged to humility, inclusivity and
generosity. Like Christ, we should not seek the
place of honor but be “invited” by God to share in
eternal life to partake of the heavenly banquet.
Do you make a conscious choice each day to life
and act as Jesus did? How can you be more
inclusive in your relationships with others this
week at work, at school, at home?
Hoy escuchamos sobre el banquete de bodas,
donde todos fueron invitados a asistir: los dignos
e indignos. Tenemos el desafío de la humildad, la
inclusión y la generosidad. Como Cristo, no
debemos buscar el lugar de honor, sino ser
"invitados" por Dios para compartir la vida eterna
para participar del banquete celestial.

We are in great need of volunteers to operate
our lighting and sound during mass. So too you
might have noticed there are 8 monitors
mounted in the rafters of the church. The
monitors will display the words for the prayers,
songs and readings during mass and will replace
the use of the missals and songbooks. We
hope to have this up and running soon but we
need people to come forward who are willing to
volunteer and be trained in operating the system.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Perhaps the most familiar
traditional symbol that identifies
bishops is the crosier that they
carry. We see the shepherd’s staff
and immediately rich images from
scripture come to mind, as well as
the recollection that the first to
respond to Christ’s presence in our
world were the shepherds. The staff
is more than a walking stick; its
crooked top is useful in snaring
errant sheep but also in keeping the
flock united. Bishops carry the curve
outward, indicating their ministry to
the wider flock, while abbots (and
some abbesses, too) carry the
crosier with the curve pointing in,
indicating that their ministry is to the
monastery alone.
The crosier was once also carried
by the pope, but was phased out
centuries ago. You may recall that in
pre-“popemobile” days, the pope
was often carried around on a
portable throne called a sedia
gestatoria. Since he didn’t do much
walking, the need for a crosier was
minimal. Pope Paul VI introduced
the innovation of a walking staff in
the 1960s, and everyone
remembers Pope John Paul II’s
walking staff, not a crook, but a
delicately sculptured crucifix. Thus,
the pope carries a “pastoral staff”
rather than a crosier. Precisely
because the pope’s ministry is
universal, to the whole world, popes
will likely leave crosiers in the hands
of the bishops they commission for

Twenty-second Sunday in
Ordinary Time
Humility is a virtue we don't see
much in our times. It seems that
bragging, swaggering, and
arrogance dominate our fashion for
everything and our Internet
conversations. Who hasn't been
irritated by the "trolls" who try
(usually with bad grammar and poor
spelling) to start an online fight with
those whose opinions do not align
with theirs? Our stores, catalogs,
and online shopping sites are full of
useless items geared in use and
price to the very rich, as ordinary,
useful things seem to fade off the
sales scene. As the rich get richer,
the poor get poorer and the middle
class is fading away. What is the
antidote to this? Humility is a good
place to start. Devotion to God is
worth more than riches. "The father
of orphans and the defender of
widows is God in his holy dwelling.
God gives a home to the forsaken;
[God] leads forth prisoners to
prosperity."
THE PLEASURE OF YOUR
COMPANY
Today's Gospel relates the story
of a rich Pharisee who has invited
Jesus to his home for a banquet.
Jesus teaches him and his guests a
lesson in humility. Take the lowest
place and do not exalt yourself.
"Then you will enjoy the esteem of
your companions at the table." We
see in the papers stories about
lavish banquets, "fund-raisers" for
good causes. Some of these are
little more than the social life of the
rich, raising a small percentage of
their cost for the poor and needy,
and giving glory to their organizers.
People pay hundreds of dollars per
person to attend these functions,
tens of thousands on gowns and
clothing of every kind. Often they
include auctions of donated,
extravagant trips, the use of yachts
and private planes that go for
donations of tens of thousands of
dollars. These events often raise
fifty to one hundred thousand dollars
for the cause, while costing a million
dollars to stage and attend. To this,
Jesus might say, "When you hold a
lunch or a dinner, do not invite your
friends or your brothers or your
relatives or your wealthy neighbors,
in case they may invite you back
and you have repayment."

Our sacrament preparation is a family preparation
process that requires the participation of the child and
a parent or guardian in monthly sessions.
Attendance at these sessions is mandatory.

Small Church
CommuniƟes;
a way of being
Church
Small Church Communities are groups of 6 to 8
people who gather in homes to reflect on the
scriptures of the upcoming Sunday and their
significance in their lives. All ministries and
organizations connected to Christ the King are
asked to use a simple formula for prayer as
they gather: Read one of the scriptures for the
upcoming Sunday. Take a few moments to
reflect on one of the questions related to the
scripture (in Fr. Ray’s column). Invite
individuals to share their response with the
person next to them; encourage people to
share with someone they do not know well.
