GATE CITY BANK
{ FARGO, NORTH DAKOTA }
“The glass wall application is just beautiful.
This is the perfect way to artfully interpret
our vision of transparent management.”
Jay Krabbenhoft, Senior Vice President, Gate City Bank
CHALLENGE
Gate City Bank, headquartered in Fargo, North Dakota,
celebrated its 90th year of business recently. With more than
30 branches in North Dakota and Minnesota, the company
is poised for continued growth. At their nearly 60-year-old
headquarters in downtown Fargo, executives sought a
long-term solution for transforming their dated sixth-floor
offices. It was important to the company that their space
reflect a progressive culture of transparent decision-making
and relationship-based work.
Project leaders envisioned an open, contemporary design
that would use space effectively and increase interaction
and collaboration among employees. Flexible furniture
with high-quality materials and finishes would enhance
productivity and create a progressive work environment
that could help attract and retain employees.
“We strongly believe in our tagline, For a Better Way of
Life,® not only for our customers, but for our employees,”
says Steve Swiontek, Chairman, President, and CEO, Gate
City Bank. “Our facility is the manifestation of our culture.”
SOLUTION
GAINS
Gate City Bank carefully analyzed which departments would
work best with an open-plan concept. The design team
interpreted the idea of transparency by choosing Beyond
frameless glass movable walls to create private offices and
several conference spaces.
Gate City Bank’s renovation combines
immediate benefits with future flexibility.
“With the precision and quality of its design, Beyond is put
together like a fine watch,” says Jay Krabbenhoft, Senior
Vice President. “It feels like a permanent wall, but we know
that we can quickly reconfigure it for future needs.”
• More efficient workstations can be
easily expanded or reconfigured.
Over 30 Stride workstations with carefully selected finishes
enhance the overall aesthetics while providing employees
with a more open and collaborative environment. Involve
storage and multi-layered worksurfaces support active work
while defining space.
Lower panels encourage more collaboration, so experienced
workers can easily mentor newer employees and teams can
communicate more efficiently. Now with glass walls and
lower panel heights, natural light flows through the space
from expansive windows along the entire south wall.
• Twice as many employees are now
located in the same space, saving
significantly on facility costs.
• Beyond glass walls, some with privacy
tiles, frame the new executive offices,
which are brighter and more efficient
than the previous offices.
• Gate City is reinventing their
workplace with millennials in mind.
“Our employees are bringing
their families in to see the new
space. They’re very proud of their
workstations,” says Krabbenhoft.

E XPERIENCE
Gate City Bank partnered with Allsteel on previous projects,
and was comfortable with the products and people. Their
Allsteel representative not only showed them concepts, but also
real-life applications, to illustrate evolving workplace styles and
guide them to furniture choices that would match their vision.
After admiring Beyond glass walls in the Allsteel showroom and
understanding the choices for customized finishes and privacy
tiles, Gate City executives knew they had found the key element
for their new workspace.
Designers were impressed with the ease and speed with which
the Beyond walls and furniture were installed, which kept the
project on schedule. Reaction to the new space has been
overwhelmingly positive, and plans are in place for renovation of
the third floor, using Allsteel furniture for a 35-person call center.
Beyond glass walls will separate the call center from the general
office area, providing visual continuity with acoustic privacy.
“The furniture was selected in tandem
with the architectural design, and with
Allsteel’s range of finish choices, we
could get exactly the look we wanted.”
Andrew Koedam, Project Architect and Vice President, Wild & Associates
