Summer is coming
have our general meeng; Spazzo’s Italian Restaurant
in the Redmond Town Center. It was so nice to see the
lile Massy children who aren’t so lile any more. We
also had a Jaguar couple aend who made balloon
figures for the children (and me!)
We had a wonderful Jaguar weekend on
Saturday June 15th at the Redmond Town Center. The
Exocs at Redmond Town Center’s annual Brish Day
was well aended, with the warm sun out all day. I
thought it appeared there were 125 cars on display,
and about a third of them were Jaguars.
So we gave the local shoppers a wonderful
display of Brish cars and our Jaguars. Aer the
display, Tom Toth picked a wonderful place to eat and

Air condioning- Part three
(Third in a four piece series)
It’s cool man, yeah- air condioning. Like the air
condioning in HVAC. HeangVenlaon and Cooling
– I mean. Let’s get started. First some components
and a basic understanding of their funcon. First up,
the compressor, as it sounds, compresses or squeezes
down the gas used for cooling. The gas is returned on
the “low side” (more on this later) or sucon port of the
compressor, and then expelled through the “high side”
or discharge port.
The dryer/accumulator, once again, the funcon
is as it sounds. The dryer removes water from the
system by the use of desiccant (drying material) and
stores liquid refrigerant waing for dispersion. The
condenser: as it sounds, condenses the gas to liquid
as it is cooled. It is located in the system aer the
compressor, and fed from the discharge port by the
liquid line. It is located in front of the radiator to ulize
maximum use of the cold air as it enters the engine
compartment.
The expansion valve. All systems must have a
restrictor, where the liquid is sprayed or turned to gas as
it enters the evaporator. Alternately the orifice tube
can also do this job. The orifice tube, operates s it
also sounds, at the risk of sounding repeve. Orifice
tubes consist of a screen (so it
does not plug), and a metered
hole. Like the expansion valve,
it sprays liquid Freon (R-12 or
R-134A) turning it from liquid to
a gas.
The evaporator. Both
the evaporator & condenser are
heat exchangers. The condenser cools the Freon as
it comes from the compressor. The evaporator works
in reverse, as the Freon goes from liquid to gas in the
evaporator, it absorbs heat, cooling the evaporator air
that blows through it becomes cold.
Just a quick note on the difference between
orifice tube and expansion valve controls. Orifice
tube systems commonly turn the compressor on and
off, or cycle it to prevent evaporator freeze up. The
expansion valve is somewhat self-regulang from its
temperature bulb and pressure sensing line. Freeze up
is also prevented by an electronic sensing cold switch
that will shut the compressor off and prevent freeze
up. Lastly, the high/low switch that both stops the
compressor when refrigerant pressure is too high and
low prevenng damage to compressor.
Fellow Jaguar enthusiasts, thank you for
following this ongoing arcle. Next me, some more
on workings and funcon of Air Condioning systems..
Also some basic diagnoscs on heang and air
condioning systems.
Keep the rubber side down,
Happy motoring,
Andy

Volunteers needed at JDRC/NWA
New Membership Chair needed
Long-me Membership Chair Vickie Kollmar is rering,
so the club has need of a new volunteer. We are sorry to lose her
help here, but we cannot complain because she has done such a
good job for a long, long me. Please volunteer for this job! The
club needs your help. See the arcle on page 16 the JagMag for
details about the dues.
And while we’re at it... JagMag Editor needed
I have been happy to step in as editor on a temporary
basis in recent months, but the JDRC/NWA does need of a new
permanent editor. The job is a great creave outlet, and I find
it quite enjoyable. I choose to spend more me on it than is
required, though. The JagMag can be done in a much simpler
manner than the way I do it, using programs we all have on our
home computers. Email me for more info on this fun posion.
Automove photography tech session July 20
JDRC/NWA will host an Automove Photography
Tech Session featuring professional photographer Craig Alness,
Sat. July 20, 10 AM unl noon at the LeMay Family Collecon
at Marymount in Spanaway, south of Tacoma. We will not be
inside the building for our session, so look for our Jags and club
members outside. We can tour the museum individually aer our
session.
Taking a snapshot of your car is quick and easy. Making
a photograph takes a bit more me and effort. This session will
explore the methods used to create a beauful photograph of
your cherished automobile. A professional photographer since
1990, Craig Alness will share some of the techniques he uses. We
will discuss equipment, composion, lighng, locaon scoung
and conceptualizing.
Craig shoots ships, products, people, events, and of
course cars. Craig is the son of Ann and Bob Alness, a JDRC/NWA
trustee Bob Alness. He captured memorable images of some of
our club events, including the Jaguars on the Green photos that
appear in the club’s calendar.
The LeMay Family Collecon Foundaon at Marymount
is South of Tacoma in Spanaway, at 325 152nd ST E, Tacoma, WA

No Supercars or F1 racing for Jaguar
Jeremy Korzeniewski at AutoBlog.com reports that
although rumors have swirled in recent weeks that Jaguar may
be the next manufacturer to join the V8 Supercars Racing Series
(popular in Australia but now well-known in other parts of the
world as well), Jag’s parcipaon is not to be. In fact, it would be
“insane,” according to Jaguar Land Rover Asia Pacific Managing
Director David Blackhall, for it to accept either of the two offers it
has received to bring Jaguar into V8 Supercars.
Not only is Jaguar not interested in entering V8 Supercars,
says Blackhall, it also fails to understand why AMG and Volvo
would parcipate with their recent entries. “I don’t know what it
does for AMG to get flogged by a V8 Commodore week aer week,
but it’s their brand, their issue. And the same thing will happen to
Volvo to be honest.”
According to Korzeniewski: “Judging by Blackhall’s
statements to motoring.com.au, aer not-so-serious
consideraon, the automaker decided the monetary commitment
it would take to compete for wins would be more than any
potenal exposure would be worth, despite the fact that Jaguar
has a 5.0-liter V8 to go along with what would seem to be a tailormade rear-wheel-drive chassis. For what it’s worth, one offer
would have had Jaguar pung its name across an engine made by
someone else, an opon that was flatly turned down.”
In related news, don’t expect to see Jaguar make a return
to Formula 1 either. “We’ve been there. And the fizzy drink that
took over [Jaguar’s F1 team] is not doing too bad. But we wouldn’t
go back again,” said Jag’s head honcho Adrian Hallmark.
Jaguar Tops UK JD Power customer survey
Owners of Jaguar cars are happier than any other. That is
the verdict of a major buyers survey by JD Power and Associates in
their most recent UK survey.
Jaguar was named the Number One manufacturer in the
JD Power and Associates/What Car? 2012 UK Vehicle Ownership
Sasfacon Study (VOSS), the ulmate survey of what real car
buyers think about their cars.
The study asked 18,000 car owners to judge all major car
manufacturers, and rate their performance, design and comfort,
quality, reliability, cost of ownership, economy and dealer service,
and there was a clear winner.
Jaguar leapt from third place the previous year to a
resounding first place, beang other manufacturers on vehicle
quality, reliability and appeal, with the desirability of the Jaguar XF
earning the highest score of any car model in the study.
Jeremy Hicks, Director of Jaguar Land Rover UK, said: “To
be awarded the Number One spot by JD Power is a huge honor
– not only for the staff of the 90 Jaguar dealers in the UK but for
the circa 2,000 employees at the Castle Bromwich factory and the
talented designers and engineers based in Warwickshire whose
determinaon, aenon to detail and commitment to quality have
delivered this result.”

Book Review
Paul Griffin
“Jochen Rindt, Uncrowned King”
If asked to name our heroes, JDRC/NWA club
members would surely put some road racers on their lists.
Perhaps our age determines our heroes to a certain extent.
Those with a few more candles on the cake than me might
name Juan Manuel Fangio or A.J Foyt. Thirty-Somethings
might say Schumacher (no, not Ralf), while 40-ish folks
would undoubtedly exclaim “Senna!”
My favorite driver of all me was Jochen Rindt.
Obviously then, David Tremayne’s
2010 book
“Jochen Rindt, Uncrowned King,” - subtled
“The Superfast Life of F1’s Only Posthumous
World Champion - was a real treat to me in
parcular. However, even non-racing fans
will be fascinated by the in-depth look into
the personalies and details of this golden
era of racing.
“Who the hell is Jochen Rindt?”
is the tle of the first chapter, because
that is what everyone was asking when
the German-born Austrian shocked the
motor racing world as an unknown, beang
Graham Hill at Crystal Palace in his first
F2 race. Contemporaries like Hill, Clark,
Brabham, and Stewart are frequently
menoned as the top racers of the me,
but - in terms of talent, if not results - Jochen Rindt was very
much their equal. He was an incredibly gied driver who
was tragically lost in a violent accident in pracce in 1970 at
Monza, which robbed the world of his talent and made him
the only posthumous World Champion.
Tremayne tells the story of a fantasc driver who
was every bit as concerned with safety as his friend, Sir
Jackie Stewart. In fact, Jochen’s death made Stewart all the
more adamant that safety at tracks had to be improved.
He writes Rindt’s story in chronological order, but divides
the chapters by Formula One and Formula Two contests.
One thing that makes his story so interesng is that Rindt
was spectacularly successful in F2 - probably the best F2
driver ever - while in his F1 career he was saddled with
inferior machinery. He spent me with Cooper (slow and
ponderous), Brabham (unreliable Repco engine), and Lotus
(subject to breakage and Colin Chapman’s cavalier atude
towards safety). Jochen had a great affecon and respect
for Jack Brabham, and Brabham thought the world of Rindt.
Jack said: “With Jochen, you put the car down and he just
drove it. He didn’t know anything about the development
and he didn’t want to know. He just had confidence in us, ad
the way the car was designed and set up. Some driver always
want to change something, but noJochen... He would just
get in and drive. And you;d soon know whether the car was
an good or not, because he was gone like a rocket. He was a
bloody great driver.”
Just before his fatal accident, it looked as though
Rindt would end up pairing with now F1 King Bernie
Ecclestone in a new team. Tremayne
says this: “For Bernie, Jochen will always
be in the top five best he ever saw,
including Ayrton Senna and Jimmy Clark.
‘I wish he was around now, same age as
he was then,’ he said wisully. ‘He’d give
these guys something to think about, I tell
you!’”
Tremayne was very thorough in his
research of all Rindt’s races, lisng not only
his fastest pracce mes and grid posions
at each race, but those of his teammates,
and the race pole mes. There is always
context to judge Rindt’s progress at a given
point in his career. This informaon is
invaluable to race-junkies who want to look
things up from F1/F2 in that era.
Rindt’s relaonship with Lotus Chief Colin Chapman
was prey awful, and it’s explained in detail here. Rindt
loathed the four-wheel-drive Lotus 63 and simply refused
to drive it, and he was always concerned about the frailty of
Lotus cars. Bernie Ecclestone’s analysis of the Rindt’s career
opons for 1970 were sadly quite prophec: “you’ve got
more chance of surviving with Brabham, but more chance
of winning the championship with Lotus.” Rindt’s specific
concern about 1969’s larger rear wings was borne out by the
near fatal accidents suffered by him and team mate Graham
Hill at Barcelona. Rindt sent a blunt open leer to the motor
racing press, demanding a ban on high-level wings. This was
most embarrasing to his boss. Tremayne quotes the leer in
full.
It has been widely stated that Rindt was arrogant,
and this is discussed and argued in Tremayne’s book. I think
this belief is incorrect aer reading the varying opinions.

Show and Shine and Judge’s Training in Bothell
photos by Will Humiston and Ray Papineau
Saturday, June 22nd saw JDRC/NWA members descended
on Ray Papineau’s garage in Bothell for the club’s latest Show
‘N Shine. The weather was prefect, sun shining on Jaguars on a
cloudless 75 degree day.
Ray has a cool garage, with many cars, parts, and lis. It was
a great spot for a gathering. All-in-all, about 28 people aended,
bringing 14 jags with them.
Zane Ware conducted a detailed judges training session using
the late Mike Markey’s XJS Coupe. The club always needs trained
judges for concours events, and newcomers learned techniques
for the first me, while others simply polished their skills and
went over newer rules from the JCNA.
Ray prepared his famous salmon entree “Saumon a’ Papier
Aluminoum” (I suggest using Google language translaon tool
- ed.) with the help of Vickie Kollamar, his “commis de cuisine” du
jour. Lunch was served in the shop.
Entertainment was provided by the “Jaguar Victory By Design” video played on the shop television. It was a great day, with
some people staying unl 5:00 pm. The only slight negave was
that song birds had no problem “christening” some of the Jags!
Photos this page, top: Adrian Brennan, Roy Parks, and Paul
Hunter. Below: aerial view of “Jaguars on the Asphalt.” Opposite page: members dine on “Saumon a’ Papier Alumioum.”

Rindt, continued
Ecclestone and most of Rindt’s mechanics had the highest
regard for him, as did his friend Sir Jackie Stewart in the
Foreword.
Stories and facts of many of the other drivers of the
era are menoned, and for me it brought into sharp focus
the excitement and danger of that most risky of periods
of racing. The book has many photographs, my favorite
of which is a group shot of drivers ready for the Brish GP
cricket match. The photo shows Richard Awood, Piers
Courage, Jochen, Graham HIll, Pedro Rodriguez, Denny
Hulme, Innes Ireland, Bruce McLaren, Chris Amon, Srling
Moss and Colin Chapman. Of those, Courage, Rindt,
Rodriguez, and McLaren were all killed within a couple of
years. Hill was lost in 1975, but that was in a plane crash,
not a racing car.
What an excellent book! It should be on every
racing enthusiast’s bookshelf. You may, like me, pull it out on
a frequent basis to check some fact from that racing era... or
perhaps to just immerse yourself in a me when racing was
a sport for courageous men who drove!

Michael Markey’s Jaguar Models and
Memorabilia Auction and Garage Sale
As most of you know, with his passing on March 2nd, we lost 52-year club member Mike Markey. What many
may NOT know is that Mike was an avid Jaguar model and memorabilia collector. Mike spent decades collecng all kinds
of models, many acquired during personal trips to England and/or via mail order from England. In accordance with his wishes,
Mike’s elaborate collecon will be offered for sale to members of the Club. This is a private Jag Club members-only sale.
The event begins Sunday, August 4 at 11am. Club members may preview and inspect the Aucon items as well as
immediately purchase many other items of interest. At 12 Noon we will have an informal aucon for some of the more rare
and/or valuable items. At 1pm, the non-aucon unsold items will be marked down 33%.
Our current JagMag soware does not allow for clickable links, but to receive a PDF brochure with photos of these
models, this is the hyperlink:

Or you can email Mark Dana at [email protected]
Mark is Michael’s stepson; he will also serve as the auconeer and negoator for unsold items. You will noce that most of
the aucon lots are groups of cars, based on manufacturer. This will help reduce the number of aucons. You are free to buy a
group then sell or trade what you don’t want to keep.
In addion to the models, there is much more available for sale on this special day. Many years of Jaguar World
magazine, more than 150 Jaguar books, posters, trophies, display cases, plaques, model kits, trophies, commemorave
items and other memorabilia will be offered for sale.
Checks will be honored or there will be a 5% discount
for payment in cash. No credit cards will be accepted.

A nice display of Jaguars
at Redmond Town Center
British Day
photos and story by David Massy
The center plaza of Redmond Town Center was reserved for Brish cars on the morning of June 15th and it
wasn’t long before we had an admirable line up of Jaguars and other Brish marks. Lots of people wandered through
the center on the morning admiring the mix of
Brish cars from different manufacturers and
different eras.
The Exocs at Redmond Town Center
event www.exocsat.com is regular gathering of
cars on dry Saturday mornings between 9:00AM
and 11:00AM with a relaxed family friendly feel.
The volunteer organiser’s never know exactly
what might turn up but occasionally have a
theme day such as Ferraris or in this case Brish
car day. For this father’s day weekend we also
saw Aston Marn, Lotus, TVR, MG, Mclaren,
Morgan, Lotus, Bentley and Rolls Royce amongst
the Brish brands in aendance and even a
Noble that I don’t’ recall seeing before.
A highlight for Jaguar fanacs was a very
rare lightweight E-Type, one of only 12 originally
produced in the early 1960’s. From the same
private collecon was a 1957 Aston
Marn DBR2, one of only two in the
world. These rare racing machines are
only occasionally seen on the roads
but are regularly exercised at historic
racing events here and in Europe.
For those interested in newer
cars the Mclaren MP4-12C Spider had
pride of place in the center, with a
price tag approaching a quarter of a
million dollars we probably won’t see
many of those on the roads either.
The club had a good aendance
of both classic and newer Jaguars
on display and followed it with a fun
lunch at Spazzo restaurant on the upper level of the town center.

Holiday Party, to be determined
JDRC/NWA membership chairman volunteer
needed, as Vickie Kollmar retiring
Jaguar Drivers and Restorers Club of NW
America (JDRC) is looking for a new membership chair.
Vickie Kollmar has volunteered in this position for many
years now, and is stepping down.
This volunteer non-elected job requires
computer skills with your own computer having email
and printer. Having Excel for JCNA processing is
important. Currently the database is converted to
Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word documents are
merged to the database to create correspondence. This
job may be able to be done by more than one person,
spreading the responsibilities.
The job entails answering membership inquiries
with a letter of introduction and copies of our JagMag
along with an application.
Once the application and dues are received we
send another letter of welcome and more JagMags,
a sticker and a roster. Emails are sent to JCNA, Club
President plus whoever keeps the email database,
editor and our printer who makes our name badges.
The treasurer is sent the checks along with an
accounting. Then membership adds the new member
to the database. JCNA returns with a member number
which also gets added to the database.
Every December renewal applications go out
which is extracted from the database. Then another
renewal application is sent in February for those who
have not replied yet. Every April (when most of the
dues are collected) a roster is made up from the club
database into booklet form. Currently we are using
Microsoft Publisher but I believe this can be done
on Microsoft word. (these software programs are not
owned by JDRC).
On or about Halloween, a comparison is made
between JCNA and our local Club’s database. Finally
an update goes into the board meeting minutes
regarding membership. This can be done either at
a board meeting or communicated in other ways to
the board as the board of trustees accepts the new
member. Most of the above work is the first 4 months
and last month of the calendar year. It probably takes
one day to do the renewals, at least 2 days to do
the roster, then a few hours a month for processing
memberships after the learning curve.

2013
CONCOURS d' ELEGANCE
The main feature event of "Jaguars On The Island" (JOTI) is the Concours d' Elegance held at
Windsor Park, Oak Bay - the largest such event in North America sanctioned by the Jaguar Clubs of
North America (JCNA).
This event (from the French meaning competition of elegance referring to the gathering of
prestigious cars) is a gathering of automobile owners to have their vehicles, in specifically defined
classes and divisions, judged on their appearance, authenticity and condition.
Under the rules of JCNA , vehicles are judged in either the 'Champion' or 'Driven' Divisions. In the
latter, the engine compartment and boot (trunk) of the cars are not judged and rules regarding
authenticity are not quite as strict as they are for the 'Champion Division'. If the owner chooses
to compete in other JCNA Concours events, the scores obtained will make the car eligible for
Regional or North American awards.
JOTI has an additional class, the 'Enthusiast Division', in which the vehicles are not judged but are
eligible for popular choice awards determined by votes cast by those participating in the meet.
