510HP- 225.657 MPH !!
By Alan Talbott, President
That’s right. The fastest production Jaguar
has been born! As we mentioned last month the
XF-R has 510HP with 460 ft-lbs of torque.
What we didn’t know at the time was that Jaguar
took one to the Bonneville Salt Flats to test.
With a different exhaust it did 225.675mph
during a run making it the fastest Jaguar ever
made. It also gets 40 miles to the gallon at 225
mph-just kidding! That speed, however, does in
fact eclipse the XJ220 that was produced, in the
nineties, as a flagship super car for Jaguar. 0-60
in 4.7seconds will get it done.
More good news as the rumor mills are
cranked in the U.K. One report has Jaguar
coming out with a mid-engine sports car to take
on the Audi R8. Reports indicate that the
concept car will be on display at the Geneva
Auto Show in 2010. It will be the first midengine car since the aforementioned XJ220.
Supposedly it will beat the F-Type into
production. The F-Type will be pitted against
cars like the Porsche Boxster which is a different
market segment altogether. It’s encouraging to
hear that Jaguar is moving forward with
innovation and design we’ll just have to hope the
poor market doesn’t delay the introductions.
Our board met in January to discuss budgets,
etc and one of the things that came out of the
meeting was a desire to cut some of our costs
without influencing the fun factor. The most
glaring item is the printing and mailing of the
newsletter. It was agreed by the board that we
should go all electronic, meaning email, by
June of this year to save money.
February, 2009
If you would please verify that we have your
current email address, then there should be no
interruption in service. If we don’t have it,
forward that info to Judy Scarborough or Lew
George or both for the roster. If you don’t have
email then please let us know that as well. It will
save the club at least $1,000 to make that change
and the newsletter color and photographs look
brilliant on the net.
We will try to ride out the recession in style
and to that end Kim Daly has worked hard to
offer a varied set of events starting with our
Leatherique tech session this month. If you will
note the list of activities elsewhere in the
newsletter you may find a variety of events that
will interest you and be fun to attend. The more
people that attend the more fun it is. Please plan
to join us!
Also, if you haven’t been, but want to, plan
on joining us for the monthly meeting at Aldo’s
in Sandy Springs on the 23rd. Our meeting last
month was extremely well attended with lots of
laughs and conversation to go around. Please
RSVP to Beverlee Leo at 770-949-6775 or
[email protected].
Future Activities
Kim Daly, Activities Director
Hello everyone, and Happy New Year!
While we didn’t have any activities planned for
January, your activities committee and officers
were busy planning many events to keep us
entertained and busy for the rest of the year.
Since Ivan Ruiz has written an article on the
Leatherique tech session to be held on February
21st, I will concentrate on providing a preview of
coming events.
March has us scheduled to be in the Saint
Patrick’s Day parade in Atlanta. Our club has
made it a tradition for over twenty years to
participate in this very festive event. This year
the date is Saturday, March 14th. The Amelia
Island Concours D’Elegance is also being held
on March 14th and 15th. Several members are
planning to attend this prestigious car show. As
a matter of fact, our very own Ivan Ruiz has been
accepted to show a Maserati at Amelia. Alan
Talbott is working on getting a tour for us of the
Pirelli tire factory in Rome, GA on either March
28th or April 4th.
On April 25th, we have a visit to the King Tut
exhibit at the civic center planned, followed by
lunch at O’Terrill’s restaurant.
The first weekend in May brings a visit to
Road Atlanta and The Mitty vintage sports car
races. This year, I have been told, Jaguar is the
featured marquee. XKs Unlimited has invited all
Jaguar owners to join them in the Jaguar Corral.
May 16th brings the fabulous British Car Day to
Berry College in Rome, GA.
On June 7th, we are planning to have brunch
at Le Vigne Ristorante at Monteluce in
Dahlonega. On June 20th, we are being invited
by the North Georgia Club to their annual picnic
and car show in Roswell.
We’re hoping to have an overnight trip
sometime in July. We are also considering an
evening of laughs at a comedy club in Sandy
Springs or Roswell. Dates for these events are
still to be determined.
August will bring a pool/lake party at Lake
Lanier, hosted by Dick and Johnnie Preston.
September 4th will find us back at the
Fernbank Museum for Martinis and IMAX. On
the 19th of September, we are heading north to
Dawsonville and the Kangaroo Conservation
Center followed by a get together at Ivan Myrna
Ruiz’s home.
October promises to be another busy month
with our annual Concours D’Elegance to be held
on Sunday, October 4th at Nalley Jaguar in
Roswell. Jim and Marsha Foley have kindly
volunteered to host the pre-concours party on the
3rd at their home in East Cobb. The weekend of
the 16th-18th has some of us heading off to South
Carolina to attend the Eurofestival in
Spartanburg /Greenville. As if that isn’t enough
for one month, we are considering having a
Halloween costume party on October 30th or 31st.
Are we party animals or what???
November has a special surprise…it isn’t
completely planned, so I cannot share the
information yet.
Mark your calendars for Sunday, December
6 for our annual Christmas party at Roswell
Country Club.
th
We may add a few more activities as the year
progresses. I do think we have a good plan, and
hope to see many of you at many of these events.
Watch for more details on the events in future
newsletters. 2009 looks to be a good year for
AJS!
If you have any comments or ideas, please
contact one of your activities committee
members: Judy Scarborough, Myrna Ruiz or
Kim Daly.
February Dinner Meeting
AJS member Skip Smith will be our featured
speaker at our monthly meeting in February.
Skip will give his insight into the Barrett/Jackson
auction held recently as well as the other
auctions that run concurrently with the Barrett in
January each year. The Barrett/Jackson auction,
in particular, is used as a barometer for old car
prices in the coming year. Skip’s extensive
experience as a restorer, enthusiast and lover of
Jag’s will bring us insights into a world most of
us know little about.
Please plan to attend the meeting to enjoy the
talk.

AJS Members Car of the Month
Fran McNair is leaving to go to New
Orleans, Louisiana for the ATT Tel Com
National Conference the end of February. Fran
is State Secretary for this group.
Stephanie Kelly met her sister in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and then went to
New York where they saw three Broadway
Shows namely "Jersey Boys", "Wicked" and "In
The Heights". She reported all were "excellent"!
Judy Scarborough is going on a 2-week
cruise down South America way! She will
cruise from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to Buenos
Aires, Argentina, from where she will fly home.
Sounds like a marvelous trip!
Vinnie and Marsha Lauria flew to California
where they spent 2 weeks visiting Marsha's
relatives. They enjoyed a great time - and no
doubt, better weather than what Georgia has had
to offer.
Maryanne and Joel Blackford went over to
Charleston, S.C. the end of January, returning
home in time for Maryanne to go to the hospital
for surgery on February 10th. We're all pulling
for you and wishing a very speedy recovery.
Alice Thyer, in her blue 2005 Jaguar XK8, is all
decked out in her St. Patrick’s decorations.
JUNE'S CORNER
Member News
Rock and Betty Jean Spann are leaving to go
to St. Augustine, Florida to attend a 10th
Wedding Anniversary party for some friends.
To make this event extra special, they plan to
stay at Casa Monica, a luxury historic hotel.
By June Mindrup, Health & Hospitality Director
An interesting conversation with Skip Smith
revealed that the Collector's Market from tried
and true real classic collectibles are still solid in
the market. No downward trend! That's nice to
hear in the current economy. He continued to
say the muscle cars (or faux cars) have suffered a
20% set back.
In January Norma Reichert had surgery to
replace her heart pacemaker and is now
embarking on chemo treatments. Husband Bob
is doing a swell job as care giver but please,
everyone keep them both in your prayers.
Kim Daly had foot surgery Friday, January
30th. We just bet it won't slow her down very
long.
June and Jim Mindrup recently returned from
attending a funeral in Tennessee. There was lots
of snow (ice, too) but fortunately the roads were
all clear.
Ron Greene’s Car Collection
We have been fortunate to be invited to see Ron
Green’s private car collection on March 7th so be
sure to mark your calendars now because it
won’t be in the March newsletter. Ron’s
collection includes an XJ220 and a Best of Show
winner with an early E-type roadster. The
Dusenbergs, Porsche’s and Mercedes plus the 20
odd other cars are none to shabby either. This is
an extraordinary opportunity and shouldn’t be
missed by all you automobile enthusiasts out
there. Plan to join us for a little chunk of
automotive heaven. We would like to know
you’re attending so please call or email Kim
your intent!
