Warriors and Coastal Cleanup 2015
The KV Road Warriors will be on the job again on the same day as the Coastal Cleanup scheduled for
September 19th from 8 – 12 noon. We’ll meet at Anclote Park (the park with the fishing pier, dog park, and recycling
bins) at 8AM and we will again have free parking passes for all our helpers.
A variety of jobs are available such as walking the road and grabbing trash, passing out water bottles, grabbing
full bags, and passing out new bags. We would also appreciate it if we had volunteers who would drive back and
forth along our route to make sure everyone has what they need. Some of what we collect can be recycled and are
collected in recycling bags.
We welcome anyone over age 12, and participating high school students will receive community
service hours for their graduation requirement.
It’s a good idea to wear long pants, long sleeve
shirts, socks, close-toed shoes, hats, and sunglasses. Sun block and bug spray are musts. Keep
a towel and water in your car for personal cleanup.
Dates for future cleanups are December 5,
2015, and April 16, 2016.
See you all on September 19th

The water aerobics group has grown exponentially with the summer temperatures. Though the pace may not rate up there with
Zumba or Jazzercize, it does provide a kinder, gentler way to get the joints and muscles moving. Plus its a great way to start the
day, socialize, and meet new people. (And also find out who's having a sale on bathing suits.)
For those still intrigued with shark life, there's a Shark Con 2015 event planned for July 11th at the Florida State Fairgrounds.
Check out their site and head to Tampa to find out everything you wanted to know about this fascinating creature.
When the kids are tired of the pool or it's a rainy day, note that the Muvico Theater in Palm Harbor offers a summer movie series
through the month of July at 10:00am. For only $4:00 each, kids and parents can get a small drink and popcorn while they enjoy a
show! One can find out what film is featured by calling the theater (942-8476) or checking their website (carmikecinemas.com) Regal Theaters are even undercutting that - a buck admission!! Call the theater for days and times.
Here's another local spot to take the kids (though adults have been know to trespass as well!)... Tarpon Springs Splash Park. It's
located on the NE corner of Safford Avenue and Live Oak St. It has a maritime theme, lots of fun ways to get wet, and is FREE!
What better time to eat healthy than in the summer when fruits and veggies are at their peak? Every Tuesday at 10:00am outside
of the New Port Rickey Library, Tasty Tuesday is held. Locals bring their own organically-grown and fresh-picked produce and sell
it at reasonable prices. Get there early as the items sell fast. If the good stuff is gone before you arrive, all is not lost. You can always pick up a book for yourself or the kids at the Library.
SAM’S CLUB IS COMING TO KEY VISTA!
Tuesday, September 8th from 4pm-7pm.
They will be making a personal visit to our Clubhouse and will be bringing special gifts just for you!
They will be offering $10 and $25 gift cards to new members and certain existing accounts.
Join or renew on Tuesday and receive a goodie Bag. CASH OR CHECKS ONLY.

PEACEFUL-CO EXISTENCE IN PARADISE
Peaceful Co-Existence In Paradise
No, No, NO!! “, I shouted to Annie, my curious Cavalier Spaniel, as she started investigate a very furry and very colorful
caterpillar. She looked up at me with her large calf-like eyes as if to say, “but that’s my job!” Back in medieval times the Cavalier Spaniels were bred to be loving lap dogs of royalty. Not only were they to be attentive to the kingly clan, but they were to
catch the many flying insects that disturbed the royal sleep. Annie will jump 5 feet to catch a soaring housefly and gobble any
crawly thing that dares to cross her path. I did not yank her away for fear of destroying a future butterfly or moth. This adorable
little cuddly caterpillar really held toxins within its touch -tempting fur which could, at the very least, irritate Annie’s muzzle or,
at most, constrict her throat making breathing impossible.
Here in Florida, we are all used to seeing pretty weird-looking flora and fauna, including insects. Giant dragonflies and
airborne mating love bugs never phase us. Monstrous walking sticks which shoot venom 12 feet only cause us a cautious pause.
So, seeing a multicolored, furry caterpillar crawling across a branch or sidewalk seems harmless. However there are seven species
of venomous caterpillars in North America, living in various regions; but ALL also reside in Florida. (lucky us) Their furry, and
often comical, coats really are clusters of hollow spines that contain venom. These spines break when touched releasing harmful
toxins which create havoc with the nervous system of a predator, such as a bird.
However, these toxins have similar deleterious on humans. According to the Centers for Disease Control documented
human reactions include; severe itching and rash, nausea, headache or alarming stinging and aching of hand and arm. In some
cases, the reactions have been so severe as to require hospitalization.
The “Puss Caterpillar” so named for its kittenish fur is light brown in color and fairly fat. It is also a voracious eater, frequently defoliating whole trees only to search for more.
The Saddleback Caterpillar entices us to handle it by its miniature resemblance to a Chinese dragon. It has brown pompoms , a green and yellow saddle, and white bulging eyes. The sting is very painful and lasts several hours.
The White Cedar Moth Caterpillar looks like a miniature ambling angora sweater. Its throngs come out at night from the
crevices and shaggy bark of trees looking like small luminescent, crawling yearns. They , too, are voracious eaters and known to
defoliate a tree in an evening.
Some of these caterpillars are so beguiling in their looks, they beg to be touched! Io Moth Caterpillar looks like a small
moving oasis of palm trees. Its spines are yellow green and frequently mistaken for vegetation until it begins its undulating crawl
across a plant. The Hickory Tussock Caterpillar looks like a flappers black and white feather boa. The Hag Moth Caterpillar
looks like a tiny, furry baby octopus that somehow lost its way from the sea. When touched, it loses a limb or two, inflicting severe stinging and burning. The Pine Processionary Moth Caterpillar looks like an insect with a bad hair day. Its white hairs flow
this way and that and
release venom when touched.

CASH PRIZES!!!
Come play Bingo at the Key Vista Clubhouse, every 2nd
and 4th Wednesday of the month. Refreshments served,
you must be 18 years of age to play. REGULAR AND JACKPOT GAMES.
Where NOT to go? Having just spent a weekend visiting
friends in Orlando, I offer this advice: beware the area where
Downtown Disney USED to reside. It's a nightmare with all
the renovation going on and the ensuing traffic congestion.
Even Planet Hollywood and Cirque du Soliel must be feeling
the effects of this logjam on their venues. There's always the
Aquarium or Busch Gardens......
