ENJOYING LAKE CUMBERLAND
One of America’s Favorite Lakes
Each year millions of visitors come from
across the eastern U.S. to enjoy the rugged beauty of the Lake Cumberland area’s
63,000 surface acres and 1,255 miles of
wooded shoreline. If you delight in soaking up the sun in a secluded cove, entertaining friends on an open air pontoon
boat, tubing with your ski boat or skimming around a wooded point on a
jet ski, you will find a wonderful spot
on Lake Cumberland to do just that.
Houseboat Vacations
Weekend trips or week-long vacations on a houseboat
are remembered long after docking. Imagine your
family and friends sharing the experience as you set
your own pace on the smooth waters of Lake Cumberland. A houseboat vacation allows you to escape
the rigors of everyday life in a beautiful setting while
still enjoying the luxuries of home. The marinas in the
Somerset and Burnside area are among the finest in
America. Houseboats are available in a variety of sizes
featuring many amenities including water slides and
private state rooms. Contact these Pulaski County marinas for all your boat rental needs: Burnside Marina at
606-561-4223 or Lee’s Ford Marina at 606-636-6426.

Fishing
It’s no fish tale when we talk about Lake Cumberland
fishermen bringing home a 58-pound rockfish, a
22-pound walleye or a catfish weighing an amazing
208 pounds! From Cumberland Falls to Wolf Creek
Dam, Lake Cumberland is filled with crappie, bream,
walleye, trout, catfish and five species of bass. Shoot
for the record book anytime during the year-long fishing season. Fishing guide services are available and
Kentucky offers free fishing the first weekend in June.
Visit our website for more detailed fishing information.
Crappie USA Fishing Tournament
A Spring Qualifier Tournament – Teams will be qualifying for the 2012 Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic, the
worlds’ Super Bowl of Crappie fishing – a $100,000.00
event. This tournament is scheduled to coincide
with the spring crappie spawn. Normally held during
March, April or May, these events feature divisions
for the local angler and the traveling pros alike. The
Tournament will be held May 5th at General Burnside
Island State Park in Burnside, KY. It is sponsored by the
Somerset Pulaski County Convention & Visitors Bureau
and Burnside Tourism.
Spring Poker Run on Lake Cumberland
Some of the biggest and fastest boats on the water
can be seen as Lee’s Ford Marina brings the Poker Run
to Lake Cumberland in June. High-speed power-boats
compete for a winning “poker hand” in the festive
summer event that features plenty of entertainment
and good food.

Camping
Everyone should go camping at least once. Whether it’s in
a sleeping bag under the stars or a luxurious motor home,
there’s a camping spot for you on Lake Cumberland at
areas like Pulaski County Park, Fishing Creek or Waitsboro.
General Burnside Island State Park offers the area’s largest
campground, complete with a five-lane boat launch,
championship golf course and recreational facilities. Both
Bee Rock and Little Lick in eastern Pulaski County offer
primitive camping near the rugged Rockcastle River,
taking you far from the summer crowds. Complete list of
campgrounds and community parks on pages 17-19.
Parks and Hiking Trails
The Lake Cumberland area is known for many natural
woodland areas that remain today just as Daniel Boone
would have seen them. The Daniel Boone National
Forest in the east and Big South Fork National River and
Recreation Area in the south are deep green jewels.
West of Somerset, Pulaski County Park and the Fishing
Creek Recreation Area provide camp sites, picnic tables,
shelters, frisbee golf, playground facilities and open
green spaces. Wonderful discoveries await on area
hiking trails, such as the 1/4 mile Black Walnut Nature
Trail starting at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Office
between Burnside and Somerset and the trails leading
to the overlook at Bee Rock campground in eastern
Pulaski County. MORE PAGE 6

SomerSplash Water Park
Somerset’s water park is a cool place to spend hot
summer days. The water park’s 20 acres of safe family
fun offer visitors a variety of water adventures, including slides, a giant wave pool and other pools designed
to accommodate all ages. Don’t miss the annual fireworks display during the July 4th holiday.
Challenging Golf
Pulaski County’s five challenging and beautiful courses represent some of Kentucky’s finest vacation golf.
The area’s newest 18-hole course, General Burnside
Island State Park Golf Course, is also one of its oldest.
This Brian Ault Signature Series Golf Course replaces a
course first built in 1958. Located on an island surrounded by Lake Cumberland, the course features a
number of holes that overlook the lake.
Guests at Woodson Bend Resort simply step from
their condominium onto an 18-hole Trevino-Bennett
course. Located just minutes off U.S. 27 South, all visitors are welcome and can enjoy the beauty of Lake
Cumberland while golfing at Woodson Bend Resort.
This course also has a driving range and a pro shop.
Eagle’s Nest Country Club, an 18-hole, par-71 golf
course, is one of the most challenging and scenic
courses in the region. Eagle’s Nest is a semi-private
course open to out-of-town visitors.
Somerset Country Club, just north of downtown,
offers another challenging 18-hole golf course and
is the oldest course in the county.
lakecumberlandtourism.com
Located halfway between Somerset and Burnside,
Waitsboro Hills Golf Course features Bermuda fairways, a driving range and a pro shop. Visitors enjoy
the challenges of this course and the beauty of the
countryside.
Lake Cumberland Driving Range, near Bronston,
is open year-round and offers nighttime lighting for
late-night practice.
Sports Facilities
The Somerset Family Fitness Center has a full gymnasium, Kid-Zone, Yoga, dance and swimming instruction.
SomerSport Park, just east of town, features an outdoor playground plus baseball and soccer fields.
The Ward Correll Sports Complex, located next
to SomerSplash Water Park, includes four ball fields
which are used for league and tournament games.
Adjoining SomerSplash is the new Skateboard Park.
Rocky Hollow Recreation Center in downtown Somerset provides a walking/jogging track, exercise room,
gymnasium, game room and various sports programs.
A new feature at Rocky Hollow this year is the 9-hole
Disc Golf Course.
Somerset’s Citizens Park offers twelve professional
horseshoe pits plus a professional croquet court.
Courts are available at some resorts and around the
county for fans of tennis, racquetball, basketball and
volleyball.

Master Musicians Festival
Many exciting activities take place throughout the
year. The Master Musicians Festival is an annual
midsummer two-day concert that includes blues, jazz,
bluegrass, folk, country, newgrass and gospel music.
Performers such as Doc Watson, The Avett Brothers,
Goosecreek Symphony, Nickel Creek and others have
headlined the multi-cultural event in previous years.
The festival also features an arts and crafts fair, food
vendors and children’s activities.
Events at Your Fingertips
Each year a number of events and
festivals fill the streets and venues
of Somerset, Burnside and Science
Hill. Be sure to keep informed on
all the year-round activities by

with one of our friendly staff at
the Somerset-Pulaski County
Convention and Visitors Bureau,

stars play in the 760-seat theater. Call 1 (606) 677-6000.
Carnegie Community Arts Center and More
The Carnegie Community Arts Center is home to a
wide variety of art shows and other community gatherings month after month. Several artists maintain
working studios in the Carnegie and the Sheltowee
Artisans have a retail shop on the main floor. Call
1 (606) 677-0333. Just down the street, the Children’s
Botanical Garden of South Central Kentucky encourages children to use all their senses to connect plants
to the sciences, history, literature and the arts.
Historic Pulaski County
Many visitors who enjoy the lake aren’t aware that
they may be boating or swimming directly over the
early 20th century river port of Burnside, Kentucky. The
city was moved out of the valley to its present location
before construction of the lake began in 1948.
Pulaski County has enjoyed a rich history during
the last 200 years. A self-guided, interpretive walking
tour of downtown Somerset leads you through part
of that history. In addition to showing such places as
the once-thriving Commercial District or the historic
homes on Harvey’s Hill, the tour gives insight into
diverse aspects of life in Pulaski County, such as town
beginnings, the development of rural commerce and
a turn-of-the-century trolley car system. MORE PAGE 12

that specialize in items made by local artisans.
lakecumberlandtourism.com

galleries — private and public. Seminars and weekend workshops are available in various crafts such
as stained glass and oil painting. Arts groups like

Savor Lake Cumberland
Almost any taste can be satisfied at
Somerset and Burnside area restaurants.
Before heading back home, don’t forget to
try a big plate of fresh Lake Cumberland
catfish. We invite you to enjoy the local
cuisine and take a little bit of Somerset
and Pulaski County with you. Two vineyards, two apple orchards and two local
farmers markets are located within a
short drive of downtown Somerset.
Tasty Treats Await
Start your day with a hot cup of coffee or a chilly
smoothie from Baxter’s. This popular, locally owned
coffee shop roasts its own coffee beans. Its three
Somerset locations make Baxter’s convenient whether
you’re north or south of town.
Or savor a bite of Somerset history at one of the
county’s oldest eateries when you buy donuts and
coffee at family-owned Amon’s Sugar Shack. Join
locals and visitors alike as they return time and time
again for the sweets Pulaski County residents have
been enjoying for more than 60 years.
On Tuesdays and Thursdays, enjoy a cup of tea and
other goodies at Anna Katherine’s Victorian Tea Room
in Science Hill.
Hungry for lunch or dinner? From national fast
food and pizza chains located on the U.S. 27 “strip” to
locally-owned, family-style restaurants and sushi,
lakecumberlandtourism.com
you are sure to find something that will satisfy your
appetite. In Burnside, a wide array of sports bars, pizzerias, Mexican and contemporary restaurants light up
the evening. Occasional musical entertainment and
karaoke nights are scheduled throughout the year.
Want to take a gift or souvenir of food home with
you? Haney’s Appledale Farm just east of Nancy offers a wide variety of apples well into autumn. Apple
cider and fried apple pies are also available seasonally. Pulaski County now boasts two local vineyards,
so enjoy the flavor of your vacation year-round with
wine purchased onsite. Tastings are available at both
vineyards.
In addition to prepared meals and food items,
Pulaski County also offers abundant produce at its
two farmers markets, various roadside stands, Wilson’s
Strawberry (U-pick) and Bear Wallow Farm.
