Fully Reversible, Feather Light, Cozy Warm, Easy and Portable in two shapes to fit sizes up to 4xl.
Materials
-2 skeins (110 yards each) Biggo Yarn (50% Merino Wool, 50% Nylon) OR 2 skeins (246 yards each) of Aloft
(knitted with two strands held together). 220 yards of any light but bulky or fluffy fiber will do fine. It is a
great pattern for hand spun or thick/thin yarn as well.
-US Size 15/10 mm circular or straight needles.
-4 (8) stitch markers of the type that go on the needles, plus 1 of the type that hooks through a stitch.
Stitch Abbreviation Key
[ ] : repeat the stitches within the brackets as indicated
K: knit
Ktbl, (tbl): Knit through the back loop, (through the
back loop).
PM: Place Marker.
REM: remain(s), (ing)
RS: Right side of work. In this case the increase rows
SM: Slip the marker from left needle to right needle.
ST, STS: Stitch, Stitches.
WS: Wrong side, in this case, the rows knit straight across.
YO: wrap the yarn from front to back over the needle
People who have had shoulder injuries or older folks who are a little frail can be very vulnerable to
cold, yet find heavy shoulder coverings uncomfortable. People receiving cancer treatment sometimes feel
very chilled, and any extra weight can feel like a burden. This shawl will keep their shoulders and chest
warm, with very little added weight.
The curved neckline and upper increases mean the shawl sits securely on the shoulders, and does not
roll or fold uncomfortably against the back when seated.
The smaller, square-backed shape will keep the shoulders and chest warm for anyone up to 4xl, but
will ride higher on the arms/shoulders the larger a person is. The extra-increase star-shaped back version is
suitable for those with larger frames and keeps upper arms warm as well. Both measure 13 inches down the
spine after blocking, but the star shaped shawl’s additional increases allows it to wrap around a largerframed person.

First Note: I am using the abbreviations ‘RS’ and ‘WS’ for convenience of notation. This shawl is in fact
fully reversible.
Second Note: Every YO worked on a RS row will be ktbl while working the following WS row. This twists
the stitch, thus slightly closing the hole. This is only explicitly explained on Row 2, but it is to be done on
every even-numbered row thereafter.
Co 3 stitches
Row 1 (RS): [k1, yo] twice, k1. (5 sts)
Row 2 (WS): K. When you come to a yo stitch, ktbl, twisting the st and closing the hole.
Row 3: [k1, yo] four times, k1. (9 sts)
Row 4: k
Row 5: [k1, yo] eight times, k1. (17 sts)
Row 6: k
Row 7: k1, yo, k3, yo, pm, k1, pm, yo, k7, yo, pm, k1, pm, yo, k until 1 st rem, yo, k1. (23 sts)
Row 8 (and all even-numbered rows that follow): K, knitting each yo tbl and sm as you come to them.
Attach a safetypin style marker (or other style that attaches through a stitch) at the beginning of Row 9,
indicating an increase row. (i.e. when that marker is on your right, you are about to begin an increase row)
Row 9: k1, yo, [k to marker, yo, sm, k1, sm, yo] twice, k until 1 st rem, yo, k1. (increased by 6 sts)
Row 10: k, slipping markers and remembering to twist yos as you come to them.
Repeat Rows 9 and 10 until you have a total of 77 stitches (8 more times). (24 sts, first marker, 1 st, second
marker, 27 sts, third marker, 1 st, fourth marker, then 24 sts.) End with a row 10. You will have increased the
total stitch count by a total of 6 stitches each time you work a row 10.
FOR A SMALL- TO MEDIUM- FRAMED PERSON: Keep repeating rows 9 and 10 beyond the count of 77
stitches until the depth of shawl desired is reached, then bind off very loosely. This will make a non-wavy
bottom.
FOR A LARGER-FRAMED person (or if you desire a wavy bottom to the shawl), continue by adding another
set of increase points as stated in the Transition Row Section below. NOTE if you wish to make this version
of the shawl longer, wait to add rows until AFTER the transition section.
Transition (TR) rows: You will be adding two more increase points in the center (27-st) section.
TR Row 1: k1, yo, k to marker, yo, sm, k1, sm, yo, k8, yo, pm, k1, pm, yo, k9, yo, pm, k1, pm, yo, k8, yo, sm,
k1, sm, yo, knit until 1 st rem, yo, k1. (87 sts)
TR Row 2: knit across, knitting each yo tbl and sm as you come to them.
Second Half of Shawl:
Row 1: k1, yo, [k to marker, yo, sm, k1, sm, yo] four times, k until 1 st rem, yo, k1. (increased by 10 sts)
Row 2: k, sm and remembering to twist yos as you come to them.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until shawl is as long and wide as you wish it to be. Bind off very loosely.
With two skeins (220 yards) of the Biggo yarn, I ended up with a total of 167 sts before binding off (42 sts,
marker, 1 st, marker, 26 sts, marker, 1 st, marker, 27 sts, marker, 1 st, marker, 42 sts)
