State Regent’s Message
Dear Oklahoma Daughters:

Each of you are “knocking holes in the darkness” (darkness meaning people not
knowing about DAR or what members do) one person at a time. Robert Lewis
Stevenson (author famous for selecting descriptive words) was very ill from the age
of six to ten years with a respiratory disease. One evening he was standing with his
nose pressed against the window pane when the nurse entered his room and she
asked what he was doing, he replied, “I’m watching the lamplighter knocking holes in
the darkness”.

This is what you are doing when volunteering in your communities wearing your red, white and blue DAR pin which
states, “Ask me about DAR”. You are letting “your light shine for DAR” and “knocking holes in the darkness”. You
serve with distinction and are inspiring to others with your volunteer service benefitting your community. Has your
chapter selected a community project to do on October 11th (date DAR was chartered 125 years ago) to benefit
your community? This is another unique public way to attract new chapter members. If you haven’t purchased
your “Ask me about DAR” pin to wear with your jeans when shopping, in the grocery store or visiting the dentist,
email Donna Gantt at: [email protected]. The cost is $1.00 per pin. We’re hoping to have every member wearing
this pin. It is such an easy way to gain new chapter members with the wearing of this pin.
Many of us are serving in new chapter positions or are new members and wondering, “What do I do now?” Come
to your state workshop August 19 – 22, 2015 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Tulsa and find out. There will be several
forums focusing on answers to your questions, “What do I do now?” Many opportunities will be available to talk with
other members and ask them your questions.
Get your western attire (jeans) dusted off and bring with you; pack your red, white or blue OK DAR polo shirt to
wear at the Western Gala. This is the pre-workshop dinner Wednesday evening August 19, 2015. It will be held at
the Tulsa Historical Society at 2445 S. Peoria Avenue. There will be three out of state guests for you to meet
informally—President General Lynn Young (from TX); Kansas State Regent Brenda Dooley and Nevada State
Regent Linda Morrison. This will be a moment for you to savor in your DAR journey.
Every chapter regent is gathering and sharing historic pictures with Reta Scherwinski and Cindy Henderson which
will be on display as part of Celebrate 125. I’m asking each chapter to share their history in their community either
through news articles and/or public exhibits in addition to your community service. Get the news out about when
your chapter began and what you’ve done. “Let your “Light shine for DAR”.
Kiamichi Country District Director Lorna Holloway and her chapters are looking forward to welcoming you to a
robust, informative and fun workshop August 19 – 22, 2015.

Lynn Forney Young, NSDAR President General
Brenda Judd Dooley, Kansas State Regent
President General Lynn F. Young has been
a DAR member for 36 years and has a
distinguished service background. She was
elected to the position of President General
of the Daughters of
the
American
Revolution after serving the Society in a
variety of
national, state and local roles.
This includes serving from 2006-2009 as
State Regent of Texas, the largest DAR
State Society with more than 7,000
members and 195 chapters. She is the first member from Texas in the
Society’s 123 year history to be elected as President General.
Mrs. Young’s family has lived in Houston, Texas going back 5 generations
and she is the fourth of six generations of DAR/SAR/C.A.R members. She
and her husband, Steve, own a family cattle ranch outside of Austin where
they were recently recognized for the restoration and preservation of a
historic cemetery located on the property. She is the mother of one
daughter and one son, and grandmother to two grandsons.
Lynda Morrison-Rader, Nevada State Regent
Lynda has been a DAR member since 1990. She is
married to Tom Rader and they each have two
daughters. Together, they have 10 grand children.
Lynda has served the DAR as Chapter Parliamentarian,
Vice Regent, Regent, Treasurer, Historian, Recording
Corresponding Secretary, and Registrar. She has been
State Recording Secretary, vice Regent & Regent, and has held numerous
State and Chapter Chairmanships. She has been editor of the Nevada
State Bulletin, member of the DAR Chorus, pianist for State Conference &
Joint lu8ncheons, publisher of the Nevada State Calendar, Webmistress
for her Chapter, Associate member of the Sasebo Chapter, Japan, and the
Blue Danube Chapter, Austria, member of the Cameo Club, State Officers
Club, State Regents Club, National Officers Club, Colonial Dames of the
XVII Century and the Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims. She holds an
MS in Computer Science, from the University of Nevada, Reno, a BS in
Mathematics from Santa Clara University, a fifth year in Education from
SCU, and various computer and security certifications.
She has taught as a secondary educator, part time as a community college
instructor and a SANS GSEC mentor. She is retired from the State of
Nevada where she worked as a Computer, Network, and Security
Professional.
Brenda joined Desire Tobey Sears Chapter in 1981
as a junior member. She has served in most chapter
offices, numerous chapter chairs and currently serve
as registrar.
She has served as Northwest District Director and 3
terms as a state officer prior to becoming State
Regent and as a state chair of 3 committees.
Professionally, Brenda’s degrees are from Kansas State University in Home
Economics Education. She taught home economics/family and consumer
science for 31 years in small, rural high schools. Since retirement, and has
remained active with Family, Career and Community Leaders of America
and her professional organization.
Brenda and her husband, Jim operate the family farm in Jewell County
where they grow wheat, grain sorghum and soybeans. Her responsibilities
are trucking grain to the elevator and bookkeeping. They have 1 son who
will take over the family farm at some point in the future.
Brenda enjoys genealogy, quilting, sewing and cross stitch. Brenda and
Jim enjoy traveling and have visited 49 states.
U.S. Army SPC (Ret.) Aaron and Tabitha Estes
Aaron Estes grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma
before attending Northeastern State
University. After college and starting a
family, he was working two jobs before
joining the Army National Guard in 2009.
During his deployment to Afghanistan in
2011, Aaron was performing a routine foot
patrol when a 40-pound roadside bomb
detonated and produced a blast radius
equivalent to that of an 80-pound bomb. He suffered severe shrapnel
wounds, a traumatic brain injury, loss of vision in his left eye, inner ear
damage, and multiple fractures.
While recovering at the San Antonio Military Medical Center at Ft. Sam
Houston, Estes underwent several surgeries and physical therapy.
After interning as an intelligence analyst with the Department of Homeland
Security- ICE, Aaron retired from the military and now devotes much of his
time to volunteer work. He is very active with Operation K-9, his children’s
schools, and the American Legion.
Aaron and Tabitha Estes will be our special guests on Friday evening.
