our impression
We feel there is a lack of a coherent approach to this issue, therefore we
propose to tackle this problem by presenting an alternative scenario: What
would this process be if we had a fixed deadline for moving the city?. The
benefit of a deadline is the reduction of uncertainty and the possibility to plan a
community and its future from the scratch, this is the approach that we would
like to explore.
Therefore we propose two design strategies; one dealing with the exit strategy
of Malmberget and the second one dealing with
our solution
the pioneering strategy of a still to be determined new location.
We feel that historically the community of Malmberget is a pioneering one; we foresee in our new city that the citizens will exploit new forms of resources that are both tangible and intangible. The success of this new city will hopefully attract other communities to move to this location (like citizens from Gellivare).
This new city will be a floating city, which will be functioning and operating according to the exploitation of the surrounding area (perimeter of 50 kilometers) and will be operating seasonal. The core of the city will consist out of public facilities that target both the local and global community. Around this center we propose an open natural urban environment for the pioneering citizens and
outcomers.
The challenge
After reading the first brief our group has come up with these different tasks on the challenge:
• To move Gällivare/Malmberget or To move an existing cold climate city or To move an exiting city of any kind.
• To move to a completely new attractive city
• To formulate a vision for what drives the next generation of cities, what will function
Our group
The Green Group:
• We will define a scenario with a fixed date when this new city will be opened as we believe people need an absolute and fixed deadline, we will work on the advantages of this approach and its potential benefits.
• We will work on a proposal for a new concept of a floating city
• We will focus on the potential characteristics that the arctic experience (climate, culture, tradition and environment) can add to the construction of this new city
