NT Bureau
Chennai, Sept 1:
‘100 more small buses will be

She made a slew of announcements in the Assembly under Rule

providing additional facilities on the
coastal areas at a cost of Rs 95 crore
to attract tourists besides measures
aimed at upgrading the hospitals in
the State.
The Chief Minister said, ‘the government headed by me has been taking
various measures to renovate historical
places, beaches, places of worship, hill
stations, memorials. And as a result of
this Tamilnau tops the country in getting maximum number of tourists from
within and outside the country’.
‘A mega tourism plan will be drafted
within next five years that would ensure
historical and heritage sites are preserved, renovated, well-documented.
Measures to improve the transportation and infrastructure facilities around
such places of tourist attraction would
also be initiated’, she said.
According to the mega plan, beautification and providing additional
facilities in coastal areas will cost of
Rs 95 crore. Rs 22.35 cr has been

Kanchipuram and Velankanni. And
for renovating class rooms at Government College of Fine Arts Rs 1.40

Beware! Stalkers
are on prowl
Men chase women and, if spurned, kill them
NAOMI N
Chennai, Sept 1:
In a span of three months, four
women lost their lives to spurned
lovers - which turned out to be cases
of premeditated murders, exposing
an insecure environment for women
in the State.
After the brutal hacking of S Swathi
(24) by stalker P Ramkumar of
Tirunelveli on 24 June at Nungambakkam station, it was assumed no
one would dare a repeat.
However, on 31 July, Naveena (17),
was burnt alive by Senthil Kumar (32)
a spurned lover, at her residence in
Villupuram. In August, two more
case were reported: on 30 August, K
Sonali was clubbed to death by her
college senior, P Udayakumar, for
rejecting his love proposal, at Karur.
On 31 August, Francina (24) was
hacked by stalker Keegan Jose
Gomez at a church premises. He had
been making advances towards her

for a year. Francina’s wedding was
scheduled for 8 September.
At Thoothukudi, Monicka (22) is
battling for life at a hospital in Trichy
after being stabbed multiple times by
Bala Murugan, a rejected lover.
A police sub-inspector in the city
says that men who follow women
and disturb them with love proposals
have a common attitude: ‘if I don’t get
her, then I will kill her. They also think
that nobody else should get what we
have laid eyes on, even if it means
murdering her and going to jail’.
He says that this rings true in the
recent acid attack on a 23-year-old
income tax employee, Mohit Pathak,
at his residence in Central Revenue
Quarters at Anna Nagar.
The attacker, G Prabu (30), targetted Mohit after he found that his
love interest was ignoring him and
was getting close to Mohit. ‘If the
law is stricter, then the men will not
dare. There has to be a case where
someone was punished severely for
the crime’, he says. Crime Inspector
from Otteri, Anbukarasi, has participated in various counselling sessions
for girls in schools and colleges.
‘Now, crime incidents are soaring
at an alarming rate,’ she says. The
recent incidents were reported at a
college, house, place of worship, railway station and even on a busy road.
Stalking must be made non-bailable
for three to four months, she says.
‘The moment a perpetrator is brought
to the station, an advocate arrives to
take him out, which is not advisable.
Young girls do not even know what
to do if they receive a text/call from a
stalker,’ she says, speaking from her
experience of handling such cases.
A woman IPS officer commented that
a girl might talk politely to a stalker in
order not to appear as a snob, ‘but we
must remember that while women have
love on their mind, men think about sex.
Even courteous or polite interaction can
encourage a potential stalker’.
Head of the Department of B.Com,
Guru Nanak College, and a mother
of a young daughter, Gayathri Harikumar, said young girls must not
be brought up being taught ‘they
are just girls’. This makes them feel
powerless and vulnerable. Boys and
girls must be nurtured alike, she said.

Chennai, Sept 1:
Slamming the latest increase in
fuel prices, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today once
again pressed for
revising the price
fixation mechanism for petrol and
diesel.
I have often
pointed out that
determining prices
of petrol and diesel based on international fuel rates is not right, she said in
a statement here, and sought rollback
of the hike.
Such a price fixation mechanism
paves the way for oil marketing companies making profit, she said, adding, in the past the government had
not completely passed on the benefit
of fall in oil prices on consumers by
revising excise duty.
Opposing the latest hike, Jayalalithaa reiterated that fuel prices should
be based on factors such as cost of
imported crude and its refining.
Effecting the latest revision citing
global trends was not right, she said.
The hike will result in increase in
prices of goods which will severely
impact the poor and middle classes,
she said.

Rajini’s shoot creates
tension at Saligramam
Residents up in arms over
filming bomb blast sequence
NT Bureau
Chennai, Sept 1:
Arunachalam Road in Saligramam
saw chaos and confusion yesterday
as the crew of 2.0, an upcoming
film starring Rajinikanth, directed by
Shankar was shot on the streets.
The crew sans Rajinikanth were
filming a few stunt sequences that included a bomb blast on a moving car.
In the evening, the crew led by
Shankar and cameraman Nirav Shah
were filming a group of stuntmen
chasing each other on the streets.
This led to a traffic-jam and traffic
was blocked as people gathered in
large numbers to watch the shoot as
the news of Rajinikanth’s movie being
shot there spread. Many complained
that a huge sound that followed the
blast shocked them.
Also a few wondered how the team
managed to get permission for the
same.
In the meantime, it was also reported that the team without getting
any approval of the owners of a
tall building in the stretch managed
to go to the terrace to shoot some
aerial scenes. They apparently filed
a complaint with the local police, who
summoned the crew and enquired
about the incident.
After getting their apology and
assurance that there would be no
disturbance to the residents of the
locality, the police let them off.
It may be recalled that reports of
traffic-jam and chaos on the streets
were reported when Shankar shot
few scenes involving Rajinikanth for
Enthiran on Kathipara flyover in broad
daylight a few years ago.
People still rely on newspapers to validate facts, news: Venkaiah
Union Minister says regional publications gaining popularity Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad happy with revamp of Postal dept
NT Bureau
Chennai, Sept 1:
It has been found that newspapers
are still the medium for deep reach
and credibility as people often turn
to them to validate facts, news and
analysis already gathered from news
channels and other media, Union
Minister for Housing and Urban
Poverty Alleviation and Information and Broadcasting M Venkaiah
Naidu said.
He was delivering the inaugural
address at the Regional Editors
conference organised by Press
Information Bureau at the Rain
Tree hotel here.
Editors of various media including
Managing Director of News Today,
Maalai Sudar and Talk Media T R
Jawahar were present.
In his address, Venkaiah Naidu
said in a democracy media serves
a important purpose of being a
conduit between government and
the citizens. ‘Media in India has
been tranforming people’s lives
by setting up progressive agendas, shaping up public opinion,
maintaining social cohesion and
building a well-informed citizenery.
Speaking on the government’s
approach to communication,
Venkaiah said the Ministry of I&B
is also in the process of formulating
a national policy on communication
for the government.
‘There is a need for the government communicators to adopt
innovative ways to reach out to
each and every individual in the
country. Prime Minister Narendra
Modi has not only emphasised on
innovative methods of communication but has also implemented it
himself through the ‘Mann Ki Baat’
programme.’
The Union I&B Minister also

Editors Conference in Chennai today. Tamilnadu Minister for Information
& Publicity Kadambur Raju and PIB officials are also present.
inaugurated the exhibition - ‘Azadi
70 Saal - Yaad Karo Kurbani’ at
the hotel. Talking about the impact
of social media, he said that the
paradigm shift in communication
technology had enabled commu-
nication between the government
and citizens.
Venkaiah Naidu said regional
newspapers had gained immense
popularity and also saw a tremedous rise in circulation due to the
localised content enabling readers to connect with them.
‘The growth in the regional media
space largely came from Tier II and
III cities with regional language
editions outperforming the national
editions and English dailies. Print
players are also launching hyperlocal editions dedicated to particular areas, comunities or sections of
society to increase their reach in
regional markets,’ the Minister said.
Meanwhile, Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology
Ravi Shankar Prasad who spoke on
a session on IT and Digital India, said
that some Rs 36,500 crore had been
saved which went to middlemen
and this was made possbile due to
digitization.
He pointed out to the various apps
launched by the Modi-led government and said that each was a
transformation and revolution. ‘60
per cent of Railway tickets and 35 per
cent of air tickets are booked online,’
he said. He said that ‘Ganga Jal’ has
been a huge hit and there is more
demand for it in Tamilnadu.
‘I am personally satisfied that the
175-year-old Postal department has
been revamped. I pushed them in to
e-commerce which is on the rise jn
the country.’
Answering a question raised by
Jawahar as to whether MSMEs were
being left out in the digital revolution, the Minister said that the digital
spread is equal.
Earlier, Tamilnadu Minister for
Information and Publicity Kadambur
Raju addressed the gathering and
conveyed the wishes of Chief Minister J Jayalaithaa for the conference. He elaborated on the various
schemes and welfare schemes that
were being made available to journalists in the State.

Swanky outlet in Alwarpet offers fine veg experience
- two for idlis and dosas and the third
for mixing with rice.
Says Mark, the floor in-charge, ‘We
make the podis in our kitchen. They
are ground coarse and each has a
different flavour.’
Another specialty dish they offer is
stuffed mushroom. The button vegetable is filled with finely chopped
cheese, chillies and mushroom.
They are then marinated and grilled.
Served with green sauce, the mushrooms come out juicy and chewy.
Thaalippu Dosa, where a dosa is
made with seasoned batter, is both
light and different. It is served with
three different types of chutneys and
a bowl of sambar.
Not just the podis, but the sambar
masala is also made here. May be
it is because of it, the sambar has
a unique flavour that has a sweet
after-taste.
A dig into their veg pulau makes the
meal almost filling. It is served with
onion raitha. One can also order for
other sides. The place has more to
offer if your appetite is large.
In the dessert section, the beetroot

The place also has Chinese cuisine,

Just as the temple town in Trichy district has much to offer for devotees,
so does this vegetarian restaurant.
From the simple rose milk or sweet

NT Bureau
Chennai, Sept 1:
‘The rising incidents of rape cases
in the recent times are only due to
lack of awareness among people on
sex. No one is ready to discuss about

Indian Sexology Association chairman Dr T Kamaraj.
To create awareness among public,

Chennai, Sept 1:
In total, 58 council meetings were held between
November 2011 and July 2016 in Greater Chennai
Corporation Ripon Buildings. Councillor K Sivakumar
of ward 72 raised a question regarding this in the last
corporation council meeting.
Replying to the query, Mayor Saidai Duraisamy said the
council clocked 160 hours and 54 minutes in proceedings.
‘During this time, around 3,423 resolutions have been
passed,’ said the Mayor. According to data, the Mayor,
during this period, spoke for 66 hours and 27 minutes,
while total questions that the councillors raised is pegged
at 510, excluding the 360 supplementary questions.
Also, 105 councillors out of the 200 raised questions
during the duration of the council. Among the lot, P
Srinivasan (also known as MGR Vasan) the councillor
of ward 116 (Triplicane), asked a maximum of 27 questions, followed by A Ezhilarasi of ward 1 (Tiruvotriyur)
who raised 24 questions.
However, on scrutinising the data, activists question
the remaining 95 councillors who have not raised any
questions. ‘The silence of the other concillors makes it
seem like their wards have no issues, which is contrary
to ground realities,’ said T Gopalakrishnan, an activist.
The Mayor, during the previous meetings, had announced that all the councillors should take initiatives to

Tactical tie-up
he US-India ties are bound to be strengthened further following
the signing of the Logistics Exchange Memorandum of
Agreement (LEMOA) in Washington. Indian Defence Minister
Manohar Parrikar and the US Defence Secretary Ashton Carter
were present at the time of the signing by senior officials from the
two countries.
With this, the protracted negotiations lasting over a decade
have finally borne fruit. But it will be a mistake to construe from
LEMOA that the two counties have entered into any strategic
defence relationship. They have not. As the Indian Defence Ministry
explained, the agreement sets out “basic terms, conditions and
procedures for reciprocal provision of logistic support, supplies, and
service between the armed forces of India and the US.”
Indian warships and military aircraft, for example, can now reach
farther from the home base since they will be able to refuel and
draw on routine maintenance services available at the US bases in
the Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean. Notably, the logistics support
is for only peace-time missions. It can be drawn by either country’s
military for authorised purposes. Joint exercises and joint training,
humanitarian missions such as disaster relief automatically qualify
under LEMOA.
For any other purpose prior permission will be required. The US
has entered into such agreements with a number of countries, some
of which are not its allies. India was careful not to sign a similar
agreement for fear of being seen as a camp follower of the US. It
painstakingly negotiated a special agreement which incorporated its
sensibilities. Regardless of the criticism that the agreement signals
India’s abandoning of an independent foreign policy, the Modi
Government has advanced bilateral defence cooperation with the
US while taking care not to in any way affect its independence.
A weak Manmohan Singh afraid of controversy had dragged his
feet for ten years. No such indecisiveness distorts the functioning
of the Modi Government. Given the hostile environment in India’s
neighbourhood, given the rise of China as an assertive economic
and military power, and the growing uncertainties of the Islamic
world, safeguarding India’s interests through a logistics support
pact with the biggest military and economic power in the world
makes immense sense. LEMOA and other such steps pave the way
for closer defence between the world’s biggest democracies which
have common strategic interests in the region. It is significant that
the Chinese media have cautioned India against closer defence
cooperation with the US.

The ministry says the 58-year-old

It said the virus was believed

Singapore says more than 40 people have been infected by the virus.
Singapore issued a statement yesterday evening saying it had identified

Australia outlines
new measures
against ISIS
CANBERRA:
Australia’s prime minister warned
against fomenting distrust of Muslims
as he outlined tougher measures
against the threat posed by the Islamic State movement.
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull
said that Australian laws would soon
be amended to give Australian F/A-18
Hornet fighter jet pilots the same legal
standing as their coalition partners
when conducting airstrikes against
Islamic State targets in Iraq and Syria.
The Australian legal definition of
combatants will be expanded to
include people supporting armed
fighters and will become consistent
with international norms. The tighter
Australian definition has limited the
potential targets that Australian war
planes can attack and has affected
the timing of those attacks.
Turnbull, who is resisting pressure
from lawmakers to ban Muslim immigration and to relax hate speech
prohibitions, described the Islamic
State group as the most pressing national security threat that Australians
face. But he also warned there had
been an increase in far-right extremism directed against Muslims in Australia. The latest alleged terrorist plot
disrupted by police led to the arrest
of an anti-immigration campaigner
who was charged last month with
preparing a terrorist attack in the city
of Melbourne.
The government will introduce legislation to Parliament this month that
would enable courts to keep prisoners convicted of terrorist offenses
behind bars for indefinite periods after
their sentences are completed if they
continue to pose threats.

New Delhi, Sept 1 (PTI):
India and the US on
Wednesday emphasised
on the need to enhance
access to both public and
private funding for the
development of clean
energy.
Both sides underscored
the vital ‘importance of expanding access to public

clean energy development in order to enhance
energy access and sustainable development’,
a joint statement on the

‘The sides recognised

On the progress of the
US-India Clean Energy
Finance Task Force, India
and the US announced
their intent to expand
the Task Force’s work to
include new clean energy

ROOF COMES ON, RAFA TURNS IT ON
q Nadal, Djokovic break no sweat in advancing q Raonic, Muguruza sent packing
New York, Sept 1:
Rafael Nadal cruised into the third
round of the US Open with a straight
sets win over Italian Andreas Seppi
on a historic night at Arthur Ashe
Stadium on Wednesday, which saw
big-serving Canadian Milos Raonic
and women’s third-seed Garbine
Muguruza, the French Open champ,
bow out.
With Nadal leading 6-0, 3-3 rain
became to fall in Flushing Meadows,
prompting the tournament referee
to order for the first time the newly
installed roof to be closed.
Spectators inside the stadium, the
premier court at the US Open, took
photos and videos as the roof shut
so play could resume with Nadal
leading 6-0, 3-3.
The short delay and changed in
conditions following the closed roof,
making it an indoor match, did nothing halt Nadal’s momentum as he
powered on to a straight sets 6-0,
7-5, 6-1 victory.
He will play Russian Andrey Kuznetsov in the third round on Saturday.

The Canadian was knocked out by
American Ryan Harrison, the 120th-

Novak Djokovic had no such trouble,
and has been handed a fortuitous
couple of extra days to rest up from
his various ailments.
The defending champ moved on to
the third round when his opponent

India Cements Tamilnadu Premier League, against Albert Tuti
Patriots at the M A Chidambaram
stadium here yesterday. He was
overjoyed to get three in a row at
his home ground and said, ‘I’m
really feeling very happy!’
Siva Kumar’s hat-trick set up
a big nine-wicket win for the
Kings as the Patriots folded up
for a paltry 95. Speaking to the
M K Siva Kumar
media later, he said, ‘This is my first
hat-trick. I didn’t think about it when
I was bowling because I didn’t know
it was the hat-trick ball! Only after I
got the wicket did I realise that I had
gotten a hat-trick!’
He said he was thankful for the
advice given by Syed Mohammed
(captain) and ‘Monk’ (Murali Vijay) for
the useful tips and encouraging him.
Asked if it would would have been
better to take four wickets, Siva
Kumar quipped: ‘I would have been
happy if I got another wicket but then
it turned out to be a run-out!’
Also, the medium-pacer said the
team had laid extra emphasis on the
fielding and said, ‘We had a threeday break and we had two fielding
sessions with Lance Klusener, Hemant Kumar and R Prasanna.
The end result was evident.’
And, what tips did Lance
Klusener give, the Kings
player said, ‘He has
given a lot of useful
tips to us. It is limited
but useful. He gives
us tips based on the
wicket.’
The hat-trick man
was delighted but
cautious about the
rising expectations
and said, ‘expectations will be high for
the next match so we
have to be ready.’
He said they were not
surprised after the Patriots won the toss and opted
to bat. ‘Even if we had won the
toss we would have opted to bat.
It was a good batting wicket. You
just had to mix the speed while
bowling and you could do well.
We produced good pressure.’
Siva Kumar informed that Murali Vijay did not open the batting
as part of a team strategy.
The Kings’ bowlers said it was
good to see the crowd come in
and added ‘the fact that the tournament helps the local players
is a good sign. There are a lot
of unknown players and the fact
that people come to watch them
bodes well for us.’
Meanwhile, Patriots’ experienced spinner Aushik Srinivas
said they lost the plot after losing
three wickets. In fact, the team
faced 56 dot balls and asked if
this contributed to the downfall,
he said, ‘They (Kings) bowled
well and did not allow us ones
and twos. We have to find a
solution to our woes. We lost the
plot after losing three wickets and
it was very difficult to score the
ones and twos.’
He admitted that the team
missed inspirational skipper Dinesh Karthik but said ‘We missed
him but then it was definitely not
the reason for the loss. We need
to learn playing without DK. We
do hope to learn and improve in
the coming matches.’
Aushik said the team opted to
bat first because the plan was to
score big and pile on the pressure
as they did in the last match.
The left-arm spinner said he
wanted to be consistent and
improve in the next few games.’

Leaving the match in the 67th

BCCI president Anurag Thakur
has said the Cricket Board has put
on hold plans of hosting a ‘mini IPL’
in the USA, with T20 Internationals
being seen as the preferred platform to reach out to the American
market. The main hurdle, according to
Thakur, was the time
zone difference.
‘I think we
must understand the
time difference. IPL
is seen in
India from
7 o’clock to
11 or 11.30 at
night. So you have
to play somewhere in the east
coast here (USA) so (that) the timing matches. If we have to play in
the day here, the matches should
be seen in India at night because
broadcasting is a big thing. So you
can’t make your home fan lose (by)
playing outside India. So which
are the provinces you can play in
United States? That’s a big task,’
Thakur was quoted as saying by
‘ESPNcricinfo’.
He added, ‘IPL, we are not even
thinking of hosting it outside India.
It has to be hosted in India, but
there are many other options what
you can do which we’ll let you
know over a period of time when
we come out with a long-term plan
for this market.’

deadline for conducting AGM
and forming an Apex Council.
The decision was taken during a committee meeting on

It will be interesting to see what
is the status of BCCI AGM which
has been slated for 21 September
as per the old constitution.
The creation of new BCCI committees and appointment of management as per new rules should
happen by 30 December.
However, it is unlikely that BCCI
would proceed with the reforms

NCERT begins golden journey
q Educational council was established on 1 Sept 1961 q Plans are afoot to march with technology
NIVEDHIKA KRISHNAN
Chennai, Sept 1:
When Akshay Kumar, the State
topper of NEET, was quizzed whether the controversy surrounding the
competitive examination bothered
him in his preparations, he said,
‘Though announcement of exam
date was made in a hurried manner,
the CBSE portions overlap NEET
syllabus and it gave us an edge
over others.’
Many others studying in CBSE
stream, prescribed by the National
Council of Educational Research
and Training (NCERT), would concur with Akshay. NCERT, which has
changed the approach towards education, completed 50 years today.
The council came into existence by
merging seven institutions like Central Institute of Education (1947),
Central Bureau of Textbook Research (1954), and National Fun-

damental Education Centre (1956), the
Central Bureau of Educational and Vocational Guidance (1954), the National
Institute of Basic Education (1956),
Directorate of Extension Programmes
for Secondary Education (1958), and
the National Institute of Audio-Visual
Education (1959). It is believed that
the amalgamation of the institutions
was the first step in heralding a new
national perspective on development
of education in the country.
Further, NCERT, which was estab-
lished on 1 September 1961, has the
aim to strengthen the national system
of education. In the National Curriculum
Framework for School Education 2000, NCERT designed the framework
that stressed the need for a healthy,
enjoyable and stress-free childhood
and reduction of curricular load.
In the National Curriculum Framework - 2005, the framework laid
emphasis on systemic reforms, like
community participation, academic
planning and leadership at the school
level, as well as examination reforms
and partnerships between schools
and civil society.
Apart from designing curriculum,
NCERT undertook research in the field
of education. The most noted among
them is the series of books under the
title ‘Meet Our Tribal People’, brought
out after conducting extensive field
studies, to sensitise other children to
the life and culture of different tribal
groups across the country.
Adding to it, NCERT has promoted
enrollment of children with special
needs, their inclusion into normal
schools, improved educational facilities and developed mechanisms
to deliver these services across the
system in all these years.
With technology invading all walks
of life, NCERT is also quick to adapt.
According to the NCERT website that
talks of the golden jubilee, the council
has initiated a number of experiments
7
in exploring the digital medium.
It has mentioned that textbooks,
research documents and journals,
training materials and audio-visual
materials will be made available on
the web, to reach a larger section of
students/teachers.
‘We have been associated with
NCERT for a long time. They set
the standards for quality education, which all of us look up to. The
most beautiful thing is that a student
belonging to any part of the country
can study in a new State without
having to worry about missing continuity of studies. As we all know that
CBSE schools across the nation follow their textbooks. The student is
certain to pick up as the NCERT has
achieved its aim of implementing
the national system of education,’
points out Asan Memorial Senior
Secondary School principal Suma
Padmanaban.

we can do so much in space, why do

The Minister said we were dominating Silicon Valley, most of the

Vekaiah added that the world is

great responsibility and have to contribute in value addition.
The Minister added that Atal Bihari

made India move faster. ‘People were
initially skeptical about paying money
for travelling by road but now people
are paying and time and money is
being saved. You provide proper
services, people will be willing to pay.’
Secretary, Department of Higher
Education, Ministry of HRD, Government of India, Vinay Sheel Oberoi,

Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh

4G mobile network in the country, including making all domestic voice calls and

misogynistic world is not the same
anymore. While it might take eons
for the male mindset to reform,
it is left to us to fi ght our battles
ourselves.
The first and foremost rule is to ‘report’. Several incidents of ‘love-killing’,
could have been prevented, had the victims reported the man to the law.
However this method too, is not fool-proof. As in the case of the teacher
who was murdered by a rejected suitor in Tuticorin, in which the police
were allegedly in the know. This case apart, always seek official help
when stalked or harassed.
Next, humble items like the pepper spray can do wonders in cases of
emergencies. While it might not be enough to match the machete or
billhook the potential assaulter is carrying, it can atleast help to immobilise the person for a brief amount of time.
Also, never ever glamourise stalking. Having a couple of boys in pursuit,
is nothing to feel proud of. So, do not get carried away by movies, and
encourage your stalker by showing him off to friends and associates.
Be alert and look for signs all the time. Ensure you have your mobile
phone in hand, along with a set of emergency contacts ready.
Do not assume that the person has reformed, just because you give
him a piece of your mind. Most men resorting to stalking, have lost all
notions of right and wrong. Knocking sense into their heads is not our
job, leave that to the police.
All said and done, there is only so
much that we can do. Nothing will
truly change in practical life, unless
the men decide to take a step and

How can girls
tackle stalking?
N SAHANA AROORAN
Chennai, Sept 1:
Guess who has benefited the most
out of techie Swathi’s murder? It is
none other than her alleged killer
Ramkumar. For, overnight, the boy
from a nondescript village, has turned
into a hero, one who has fought for
the cause of the rest of the ‘soup
boys’ in the State.
So much so, that some of them who
have been ‘inspired’ by him, have
gone on to commit similar crimes, all
in the name of love.
It is least surprising that Ramkumar who first made ‘stalking’ a
household term, is now a poster
boy for men with similar tendencies,
who feel that a girl who spurned a
proposal, does not deserve to live.
In this game of ‘I lead, you follow’,
it is the State, which is witnessing
one horror after the other.
For the uninitiated, three of our
women have been assaulted in a span
of 48 hours, with two losing their lives,
and another battling for the same.
All of them shared one aspect in
common- they were victims of the
male ego, which gets pricked when
a girl dares to say ‘No’.

Dragons’ assistant coach says offie keen to develop cricket in TN
Tirunelveli:
Indian off-spinner R Ashwin is very
approachable and puts teammates
at ease, said the assistant coach of
his TNPL team - Dindigul Dragons
M Sanjay.
Ahead of the Dragons’ match
against VB Thiruvallur Veerans at the
India Cements Ground, Sankarnagar
in Tirunelveli, Sanjay said, ‘Ashwin
is the number one all-rounder in the
world and everyone is in awe of him.
But he is approachable as well and
he puts everyone at ease. History will
probably record him as one of the
greats in India, but he is a great person too. He is very proactive, he does
a lot of preparation and he takes a
personal interest on everything that
is going on. I have learnt a lot from
him last year, when he led the Vijay
Hazare side. He is an intense person
and that rubs off on the boys.’
Also, he said that Ashwin would be
given adequate rest and may not feature in most of the team’s games outside of Chennai. ‘Ashwin is expected
to play the game (on Thursday). He
has asked for some rest somewhere
along the way. We have to see which
match we can rest him so that he
recovers. He wanted some rest, that
is why he is not playing in the Duleep
Trophy also. We give him total free-
dom - he has the rights to pick his
games because we understand he
is a Tamilian, but he is also Indian.
So we give him importance there as
well. He loves contributing. He wants
to develop cricket in Tamilnadu and
he wants to pass on his experience.
So whenever he can, he will play,’
Sanjay said.
He however, said that the team
was prepared to handle Ashwin’s
absence and had planned accordingly. ‘We had factored already that
he might not be there and so we
have our plans in place. If he is not
there, we will need someone else to
fill the gap. Basically we have our
combination with or without him,
with or without M Ashwin - we have
planned and kept (ready).’
He also said winning the first two
games was very nice and said the
manner in which the players were
shaping up was very good. ‘We
are happy with the way the boys
have played. It has gone beyond
expectations and a lot of planning
and preparation has gone (into it).
All of us (the trainers and coaches)
have experience - trainer (Ramji
