Troubled times
T
amil film actor Arun Vijay was involved in an early morning
mishap as the car which he was driving, rammed into a
police tempo at Nungambakkam in Chennai.
According to police sources, the actor was driving his
luxury car from Valluvar Kottam to Nungambakkam at 3
a.m, when he accidentally hit the police vehicle parked
right at the entrance of Nungambakkam police station.
The van belonged to the police department.
The policemen at the spot found the actor in an inebriated
condition and subsequently registered a case. He has been
charged under Sections 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act and
279 of the IPC. Meanwhile, an earthquake measuring 4.6 on
the Richter scale hit parts of Himachal Pradesh this morning,
following which panic-stricken people rushed out of their
homes in Shimla and Kullu districts.
While some old buildings developed cracks, there
was no report of loss of life or major damage.
The earthquake which occurred at 6:46 a.m, had its
epicentre at Kullu at a depth of 10 km, said Director
of local MeT office, Manmohan Singh adding that
aftershocks of 4.3 and 4.2 magnitudes were recorded
at 7:05 a.m and 9 a.m respectively.
In New Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister

institutional mechanism of interlocutors to talk to all
stakeholders in Kashmir to carry forward former Prime

CBI opposes bail
plea of Marans
Trouble deepens for Kalanithi, Dayanidhi in Aircel-Maxis case
NT Bureau / Agencies
New Delhi / Chennai, Aug 27:
The CBI today strongly opposed
anticipatory bail pleas of former Union Minister Dayanidhi Maran and his
elder brother Kalanithi Maran in the
Aircel-Maxis case.
On Friday, the Delhi High Court
appeared disinclined to interfere in
the case involving former Marans,
saying the matter was sub-judice in
a competent court.
A bench of Chief Justice G Rohini
and Justice Sangita Dhingra Sehgal
expressed this view while reserving
its order on a PIL for directions to CBI
to move the trial court for ‘attachment
and forfeiture of shares and all the
assets of Aircel Ltd’, as held by Maxis
and its subsidiaries.
During the brief hearing, advocate
Amit Khemka, appearing for the petitioner society, said if the High Court
was not going to interfere then he
be given liberty to approach the trial
court which be directed to hear him.
The bench, however, said it will
not say so and asked him to take
appropriate remedies under the law.
‘The matter is sub-judice. It is being
heard by competent court. We will
not interfere in the matter when it is
sub-judice,’ the bench said.
To this the lawyer said he will not be
heard by trial court and further argued
that CBI was not implementing the
law by not going after some of the
accused in the case. The bench then
said it will consider the issues raised
in the plea and will pass orders.
‘Judgement reserved,’ it said.
The petitioner, Society for Consum-
ers and Investors Protection (SCIP),
has sought directions to CBI to make
several subsidiary companies of
Maxis Communications as accused
in the Aircel-Maxis case, which arose
out of the 2G spectrum allocation
scam.
Apart from that, the society has
sought directions to the Department
of Telecommunications, Sebi, Trai
and Foreign Investment Promotion
Board to set aside the approvals
granted to Reliance Communications
Ltd for a merger of its wireless business with that of Aircel. It has also
sought setting aside of the approvals
granted to Bharti Airtel for acquisition
of 4G spectrum of Aircel.
The society, in its plea, has urged
the court to direct the authorities to
not grant any further permission for
transfer of any spectrum or shares
held by Aircel or for change of its
management or shareholding pattern till all the accused in the case
submit themselves before the special
CBI court.
The petition also seeks directions
to Enforcement Directorate (ED) to
immediately institute a probe under
the Prevention of Money Laundering
Act (PMLA) in respect of the shares
and all other valuable assets of Aircel
and the property obtained as a result
of the Aircel-Maxis deal.
It has alleged that ‘the accused
persons are in the process of liquidating their holdings in Aircel Ltd and its
subsidiaries by merging the same
with Reliance Communications Ltd
and selling its assets to Bharti Airtel
and running away’.
More trouble
for SRM Group
NT Bureau
Chennai, Aug 27:
In a fresh trouble to the SRM Group,
another complaint has been slammed
against its founder Parivendhar, and
missing producer Madhan.
Mukundchand Bothra, a well-known
film financier, came to the Commissioner’s office in Vepery this morning,
to file a petition against T R Pachamuthu alias Parivendhar.
He said that he was ‘threatened’
over phone by him. He told mediapersons that he had given nearly Rs
seven crore for the production of a
yet to be released Tamil filmMotta
Siva Ketta Siva. He gave the money
to producer Madhan only because
Parivendhar asked him to finance, he
alleged. However, Madhan returned
the amount by writing a cheque of Rs
one crore, which bounced.
It may be noted that yesterday,
Parivendhar who was grilled by the
CCB (Central Crime branch) team was
arrested, produced before court and
sent to Puzhal prison. Parivendhar, the
founder and chancellor of SRM University, was embroiled in controversies after his close aide Madhan went missing
on the pretext of attaining ‘samadhi in
Kasi’. Nearly, 111 complaints of admission seats scam surfaced.

Work for civic polls
gains momentum
Voters list to be released 1 Sept Polling date to be announced soon
NT Bureau
Chennai, Aug 27:
After the Assembly elections, the
next big activity in the State is the
local body elections, the revised voters list for which will be released on
1 September.
With the tenure of the currently
elected local body members ending
on 24 October, the State Election
Commission has begun work to
conduct the elections.
The elections will be conducted
for 12 municipal corporations, 125
municipalities, 529 town panchayats,
385 panchayat unions, and 12,524
village panchayats. Dates are expected to be announced soon.
Tamilnadu State Election Commissioner P Seetharaman said
work was gathering pace to conduct the local body elections. As
a first step, a draft voters list will
be released using the electoral
rolls of the recently-concluded
Assembly elections. The voters
will be segregated according to
their wards.
Once the revised list is released, changes can be made
in the list till 23 September after
which the additions will be published. People in the list will be
eligible to vote in the local body
elections.
Elaborate arrangements are also
being made for the elections including setting up of pandals and providing wheelchairs for the physically
challenged, pregnant women and
senior citizens.
According to the amendment
passed in the Assembly, the Mayor
will not be elected directly, but by the
elected councillors.
The civic body election is set to
be conducted using electronic voting machine in the city and ballot
boxes in the rural areas. The Election
Commissioner has sought the cooperation of the police and the local
government officials in the conduct
of the elections.

tyre of the van burst and his BWM
car was jammed. After registering a
case for rash and negligent driving,
an inquiry was conducted. He was
produced before a magistrate in Allikulam court. It is a bailable offence’,
said a police source.
Sources added that if the tempo had
not been stationed there, the situation
would have been more grave.
It may be noted that the city has
been seeing several cases of drunken driving in the recent past.
In July, a speeding Audi allegedly
driven by an inebriated woman fatally knocked down a 54-year-old man.
The woman, Aishwarya Wilton,
a 26-year-old software engineer,
who was behind the wheel, was
arrested.
Low pressure in Bay,
high chances of rain
Milder climate in store for Chennai
NT Bureau
Chennai, Aug 27:
The heavy rains last evening took
a lot of people in the city by surprise.
After enduring a dry and humid time
for the past week or so, rains are
slowly making an appearance over
Chennai and has brought relief to
the residents.
A trough of low pressure near the
Andhra Pradesh coast has already
resulted in rain spells in the city. According to the Met Department here,
there would be light to moderate
showers in Chennai in the next 48
hours. However, humid conditions
would persist in the city for the next
two to three days and can also expect
on and off showers and thundershowers in the next 24 hours.
Weather blogger Pradeep said, ‘We
can experience this cloudy weather
for another two-three days. Today will
be a cloudy day and coastal areas
may receive moderate rains.
The temperature is likely to be 32
degree Celsius while the minimum
would be 27 degree Celsius’.
‘The humidity keeps the temperature at 30 degrees. If it (humidity)
goes down, we can enjoy a cool
climate,’ said Ragavi, an IT Professional.
Sharwesh, a college student said,
‘After the hot days the rains come
as a relief now. Hope this weather
continues for some more days’.
The city had maximum temperature
of 38 degrees Celsius for many days,
but on Friday the temperature dipped
by several notches and was around
32 degrees.
Due to the trough near Andhra
Pradesh, more rains can be expected
for the next 24 to 48 hours interior
peninsular India including parts of
Telangana, Karnataka as well as
Tamilnadu.

This reporter had gone to
meet a source for news at a
location far off from the main
road.
She was picked up from
the main road by this man
who promised her to drop
her back at a transit point
when they were done with
the work.
Once they were done,
the man kick-started his
scooter and took off before
the reporter could hop on.
Initially, she thought the man
would stop realising that she
was not in the scooter. But
he did not.
Passersby tried to stop the
motorist, but he rode off.
A visibly embarrassed
reporter then walked to
the main road to find a
transport. Meanwhile
she tried calling the
source, but in vain.
It was after 45 minutes,
he called her again and
laughed helplessly over
the phone, apologizing
at the same time.
Apparently, he has realised that she was missing in
the scooter only at the next
signal and assumed she fell
from the vehicle. He said he
even stopped the vehicle and
looked around.
Taking off in right
direction
Even if people fault development on the
‘ground’ in Chennai, there can be no arguments about the development on ‘air’.
Check out this scene to understand the
idea better. It was
a
balmy Friday
evening and
people were
waiting at
G u i n d y
railway
station for
the train. Time kept ticking away
but there was no train in sight
in the direction of Beach.
After about half-an-hour
came the announcement
that a train was ‘expected’
to arrive in another 10
minutes. In the meantime,
commuters standing at
the station counted five
planes leaving Chennai.
Any doubts which way
development is happening?

Marriages made
in social media
The whole idea of marriage seemed
to be dramatic to this scribe’s mate,
until the girl met the man of her
dreams. The girl’s mother had
started searching for prospective
grooms through matrimony app.
They zeroed on a guy and sent him
a request. The boy on the other
hand was skeptical on accepting the
request, because he did not favour
arranged marriage.
He found the girl on Facebook and
sent her a request. The girl was
alarmed and responded to talk to
parents on whatsoever. But the boy
somehow convinced the girl and the
two started talking.
Time passed and they decided to
meet. When they did the boy went
on his knees and proposed to her
with a ring. The girl was shocked
and chocked in tears of happiness.
Although the rest was a fairy tale,
the duo got the taste of both what
an arranged and love marriage was.

NO MORE DRY THROATS
AT EGMORE STATION
IRCTC is putting up water vending machines
Own container refill comes for as low as Re 1
S VISHNU SHARMAA
Chennai, Aug 27:
Passengers taking the local train
unit at Egmore Railway Station will
have an option of availing of chilled
drinking water soon, thanks to
IRCTC. It is taking steps to instal two
water vending machines (WVMs) at
platform No. 10, where local trains
on the Beach-Tambaram route halt.
While one unit can be accessed
after one gets down the foot-overbridge that leads to Gandhi-Irwin
Road, the other unit will be positioned close to the foot-overbridge
leading to the Poonamallee High
Road side of the station.
‘We put it close to the foot-overbridges on both sides of the local
station so that passengers can
access it soon after coming into the
station,’ said a station official.
Metal boxes with IRCTC logo
which will be have WVMs inside
were installed at the platform more
than a week ago, pointed out the
official. While work of installing the
vending machine is going on at the
unit located near the foot-overbridge
connecting Gandhi-Irwin Road side,
work on the other unit is yet to begin.
Personnel supervising the installation said they were currently taking
up electrical work. Once that is over,
the machine will be put inside the
metal box and made operational in
two days.

‘It is a pleasure to relate Odyssey

and Meera’s book emphasises the
journey of the Madhwas,’ said former
IAS officer N Vittal.
Launching the book at Odyssey Adyar here on Friday, he congratulated
the author for the hard work she had
put in to write the book. ‘Meera was
subjective and clear to the point in
her writing. She has portrayed the
religious as well as the social aspects
of the Madhwas in the best possible

Stressing the role of the Madhwas
in the development of society, Vittal,
said, ‘That’s not all, S S Badrinath,
founder emeritus of Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai, is regarded as one of
the prominent persons in society. He
has contributed a lot to our society in
the field of medical science.’
Later, writer Narayanan Bhatt

Docs at SIMS perform
brain bypass surgery
Forty-two-year-old man was suffering from frequent paralysis
NT Bureau
Chennai, Aug 27:
A brain bypass surgery has saved a young executive and the doctors, who performed the operation
in a city hospital, were able to discover the stroke
in time.
Doctors at SRM Institute For Medical Science
(SIMS), Vadapalani, performed the surgery on
Manikandan (42) employed in Abu Dhabi. He was
suffering from frequent episodes of paralysis of
left hand and leg over the last four months. After a
series of tests, it was revealed there were multiple
blocks in blood vessels supplying to the right half of
the brain. This reduced blood flow resulting in loss
of crucial brain function causing frequent paralysis
and increased the risk of seizures.
He was admitted to SIMS Hospital, where senior
consultant neurosurgeon, Dr Roopesh Kumar,
found three blocks in a blood vessel on his right
brain.
‘We harvested a 10 cm long blood vessel from
his forehead, near the ear. This procedure needs
extreme patience and skill as the vessels are less
than a millimeter in diameter,’ Dr Roopesh said.
‘The surgery was a six hour procedure, where
a hole was drilled into the patient’s skull and the
blood vessel was stitched to the blocked artery. The
blood vessel blocked was by-passed and flow to
the right half brain improved well,’ said neurosurgeon Dr K R Suresh Bapu.
‘Just like heart attack, where heart vessels are
clogged, his brain blood vessels were blocked at
multiple places. His condition was diagnosed as
transient ischemic attack which is often called as
mini-stroke,’ he said.
‘This is an upcoming procedure and is an challenging one. This procedure was used many years
back and was stopped. Now its slowly coming
back,’ he added.
‘The doctors gave me the strength and they were
positive. I feel good now and will soon fly back to
Abu Dhabi,’ said Manikandan.

Rahul's about-turn
ongress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi may have avoided a
potentially long and irksome criminal defamation case by
his firm declaration in the Supreme Court that he did not accuse
the RSS for the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. Charging the
entire organisation for the misdeed of a solitary member can be
problematic under the criminal defamation law. The heir apparent of the controlling family of the Congress chose discretion
over bravado. He in all likelihood will be spared the trouble of
answering the defamation charge.
That should have settled the issue as far as Rahul was concerned. But confronted with the charge of a U-turn, within
hours Rahul said he had not withdrawn anything he had said
earlier about the RSS. This was clearly an attempt at facesaving after the retreat in the Supreme Court. Since it was
hard to prove the charge, he sought reprieve by shifting his
stand. However, outside in the political arena it was back to
the usual slugfest.
Quite clearly, for want of substantive issues Gandhi chooses to
regurgitate the old and hackneyed charge about the RSS. Yes, Nathuram Godse was once a member of the RSS. But finding the RSS
too soft on the 'anti-national policies' of the Congress at the time of
the Partition, he had formed his own separate group. He gathered a
small team of hot-headed activists who nursed a grievance against
the Mahatma for being too kind towards the newly-formed Pakistan.
The rest is tragic history.
The link of Godse, however tenuous, with the RSS harmed its
growth in the initial decades after Independence. Also, it put a
lid on the questionable policies pursued by Nehru both in the
years leading up to the bloody division of the country and after
the Partition. A tragedy of Himalayan proportions was inflicted
on the people by the wrong-headedness of the Congress leadership. Of course, Rahul can have no interest in understanding the
events leading up to the Partition and what had followed in its
train. But following his retraction, though he may like to term it
clarification, in the highest court in the land, the least he can do
is to stop blabbering on and on like a broken record about the
RSS killing the Mahatma. RSS, for the record, is a nationalist
organisation with lot of concern for the culture and heritage of
this land. A lot of needless bile is directed against this group by
Left liberals. And that is a tragedy.

Twitter is working
on tool to filter
abusive tweets
T
witter is reportedly developing
a new tool to help curb its rampant harassment problem.
According to Bloomberg, Twitter
is working on a feature that will let
users block keywords to help fight
abuse. Anonymous sources quoted
in the report say the company has
been discussing the idea internally
for around a year, though it’s still
not yet clear if and when such a
tool will be rolled out.
According to the report, users
would be able to set personal filters
to avoid being shown tweets with
racial or gender-based slurs. Additionally, it could also be used to
simply avoid tweets about an event
or trend.
If the assumption is accurate, the
move is definitely a good thing for
Twitter. Sure, it does nothing to
curb harassment at the grassroots
level - the offensive tweets aren’t
removed or reported, simply ‘muted’
- but it’s a step in the right direction.
At least a user can feel like they
can safely use Twitter without being bombarded with abuse, even
if it might be going on without their
knowledge. As for simply blocking
a topic, it would definitely come in
handy in certain extreme cases. We
know more than one person who’s
just about had their fill of
Pokemon Go.
Unfortunately, if there’s
anything internet trolls are
known for, it’s dedication to
their ‘craft’. If someone really really wants to harass
you, they’ll just make up
new shorthands for slurs.
Sadly, this tool does nothing for that problem. Here’s
hoping Twitter has some
more ideas to fight abuse
in the future.

UNITED NATIONS:
The UN Security Council strongly

August on Friday night, calling them
‘grave violations’ of a ban on all ballistic missile activity. A press statement
approved by all 15 members deplored
the fact that the North’s ballistic missile activities are contributing to its development of nuclear weapon delivery

‘Clarity’ achieved with Russia
on Syria truce steps: Kerry
GENEVA:
US Secretary of State John Kerry

clarity’ on a path to restore a truce
in Syria but details remain to be
worked out.
After meeting off-and-on with
Lavrov for nearly 10 hours in
Geneva yesterday, Kerry said
the ‘vast majority’ of technical
discussions on steps to reinstate a ceasefire and improve
humanitarian access have been
completed. Kerry says experts
will remain in Geneva with an eye
toward finalising the unresolved
steps in the coming days.
Lavrov echoed that, saying

Lavrov insisted that a resumption
of UN-mediated talks between the
Syrian government and the USbacked opposition that were suspended in April should help reduce
hostilities that have flared in recent
months. He also hailed an improved
atmosphere between Moscow and
Washington.
‘We have continued our efforts
to reduce the areas where we lack
understanding and trust, which is
an achievement,’ Lavrov said. ‘The
mutual trust is growing with every
meeting.’
Yesterday’s meeting came a
month after the two men met in
Moscow and agreed on a number
of unspecified actions to get the
all-but-ignored truce back in force.
However, as in Moscow, neither
Kerry nor Lavrov would describe
them in detail.
‘We are close,’ Kerry said. ‘But we
are not going to rush to an agreement until it satisfies fully the needs
of the Syrian people.’
In a nod to previous failed attempts
to resurrect the cessation of hostilities, Kerry stressed the importance
of keeping the details secret.

How to promote
card payments?
New Delhi, Aug 27 (PTI):
With an aim to discourage cash
transactions, the Finance Ministry
has set up a high-level committee to
suggest steps to promote card payments through incentives like tax
rebates and cash back schemes.
The 11-member committee, headed
by former Finance Secretary Ratan
P Watal, will recommend various
measures to ‘incentivise transactions through cards and digital
means, e.g., through tax rebates/incentives, introduction of cash back/
lottery’, the ministry said. The panel,
which will review the payments system in the country and recommend
measures for encouraging digital
payments, has been set up follow-
ing a decision taken by the Cabinet
in February. It will also study feasibility of creating a payments history
of all card/digital payments and ensure that merchants/consumers can
leverage the data to access ‘instant,
low cost micro-credit’ through digital
means and create necessary linkage between the payment history
and credit information. The panel
will also study and recommend
need for changes, if any, in the
regulatory mechanism under various laws, relevant for the purpose
of promotion of payments by digital
modes. ‘To study and recommend
ways for leveraging Unique Identification Number or any other proof
of identity for authentication of card/
digital transactions and setting up
of a centralised KYC Registry’ is
another key task given to it. The
committee will study introduction of
single window system of payment
gateway to accept all types of cards/
digital payments of government
receipts and enable settlements
via NPCI or other agencies within
specified timelines.

The rejig at Flipkart, the

locked in a battle with global rival Amazon for market
leadership.
In an internal note, Flipkart said the goal of the reorganisation is to ‘increase

‘Manufacturing growth to be higher on better export outlook’
New Delhi, Aug 27 (PTI):
India’s manufacturing sector may

improvement in export prospects
and domestic demand, even as the
hiring outlook remains subdued,

The latest quarterly survey by

that the interest rate paid by the
manufacturers still remains high

Uncertain economic environment,
unfavourable market conditions,
competition from imports, delayed

of power) and cost escalation are

industry, the poll noted.

quarter has risen to 55 per cent as
against 53 per cent for April-June
quarter 2016-17, although, it remains much below the percentage
of 60 per cent for January-March
quarter of the previous fiscal.
Manufacturing sector in India

a four-month high in July, backed
by stronger upturn in new business
orders. The Nikkei Markit India
Manufacturing Purchasing Man-
agers’ Index (PMI) - a composite
indicator of manufacturing performance - rose to 51.8 in July from
51.7 in June. The slight improvement in the outlook for manufacturing production in second quarter of
2016-17 is attributable to various
factors including somewhat better outlook for exports compared
to previous quarters, and better
outlook on domestic demand front
too, the survey pointed out.

of respondents expecting higher
exports in the second quarter rose
by five percentage points to 41

USA a special market
for cricket: Dhoni
Fort Lauderdale, Aug 27 (PTI):
USA is a ‘specia’ market for
cricket and there is no reason why
the game can’t be successful here,
asserted captain Mahendra Singh
Dhoni on the eve of India’s first international match on American soil.
‘As far as the facility is concerned,
it is as good as you would get
anywhere in the world. Yes, the
stadium is not that big, though
when it comes to the playing area
it is a perfect ground,’ said Dhoni
yesterday ahead of first of two
T20 Internationals between India
and the West Indies at the Central
Broward Regional Park Stadium
here today.
Dhoni, who returns to action after
a break, feels cricket in America is a
win-win for the game and the huge
Indian diaspora living here.
‘Also, what we have to see is
that it is a new venture for cricket.
Looking at everything, it is a perfect staging ground. Few of other
international teams have already
played here, also not to forget that
some of the T20 leagues have
happened. The infrastructure looks
good. Overall it is a big
occasion. Stepping into the USA
for the first time as the Indian
cricket team.
‘As fas as effort is concerned, I
always felt the USA was big market,
a lot of sub-continent people stay
here, not only Indians. I feel it is a
good start. The timings (broadcast)
are also good. It feels good to be

to be decided later.
League’s promoters, Football Sports

featuring 61

a home-away
league format, to be followed by the
semi-finals
and the final.
All
the

For the third year running John Abraham-owned club North East United
FC would take on Sachin Tendulkar

The first leg of the semi finals are
scheduled on 10 and 11 December
followed by the second leg on 13 and
14 December leading up to the final
on December 18.
FOCUS ON FIELDING PAID
OFF, SAYS INDRAJITH
here. Earlier, people living in US
used to travel to the the West Indies
to support us but now they have the
opportunity to catch the action here
itself,’ said Dhoni, who is expecting
a bigger crowd support for his team
than the West Indies.
India registered a comfortable win
the preceding Test series in the
West Indies but they are a much
better unit in the limited overs
format. Dhoni too said beating the
reigning World T20 champions will
be tough.
‘I would say in limited overs format, the West Indies are extraordinary. They have the right balance,
they are entertaining as well. It will
be very interesting (the two match
series). It is an early morning start
here but it won’t make much of a
difference,’ said the skipper.
Dhoni further said that playing
only two formats has helped him
focus on his fitness.
‘During this (break) time, fitness is
quite easy to maintain. The reason
is you have ample time to prepare.
What becomes a slight issue is the
cricketing aspect. There was a lot
of rain back home in India so most
of the schedule was indoor with a
bit of bowling machine to go with it.
There was not much outdoor activity. Anyway feels good to be back.
Also, this year we won’t be playing
a lot of limited overs cricket so this
gives us an opportunity to make the
most of two days we have,’ said the
wicket-keeper batsman.
‘Aparajith’s ton has increased expectations on me’
NT Bureau
Chennai, Aug 27:
If it was Baba Aparajith on Thursday,
it was the turn of his twin Indrajith to
shine as Ruby Kanchi Warriors pulled
off a thrilling win via the Super Over
against Lyca Kovai Kings in a TNPL
match at the M A Chidambaram stadium here last night.
Speaking to reporters at the postmatch media conference, skipper
Indrajith said that the team hadn’t
planned in advance for the super over
nad expressed happiness at starting
with a win.
He also said focus on fitness and
fielding was a key factor in securing
the win. ‘Actually, in our team we have
youngsters and seniors. When this
Kanchi side was formed, we focused
on our fitness and fielding,’ he added.
Talking of the Super Over and if they
had planned anything in advance, the
Kanchi captain said, ‘We did not plan
those things. We did not expect the
match to go to a Super Over.
Asked if he thought he should have
finished the match and avoided a
super over, Indrajith said: ‘I think I did
a decent job. I did not want to hit the
ball in the air. At least I wanted to get a
super over and tie. I wanted to hit the
ball to mid-wicket so that I could try
and take two runs but it didn’t happen.
Pink test: Jury still
out on sighting ball
Greater Noida, Aug 27 (PTI):
Yuvraj Singh felt ‘it moved a bit
more than SG Test’ while Robin
Uthappa’s observations varied
from ‘colour change’ to ‘lack of
reverse swing’ as the first set of
inputs on BCCI’s much talked
about ‘Pink ball’ Day/Night experiment came to the fore.
While there is no denying that
Day/Night cricket always brings in
more people as one saw at least
800-1000 spectators during peak
evening hours on all three days
of the inaugural Duleep Trophy
match, the BCCI will still need
to figure out a few things before
they seriously think of pursuing
the idea of a Test match.
For starters, there has been
varied opinions on whether an
individual batsman has been able
to sight the pink Kookaburra ball
well or not but everyone agreed
that not much effort was required
to ‘maintain the ball’ unlike the
conventional red Kookaburra, SG
Test or Dukes.
While Yuvraj did not have a great
time with the willow but his input
will be the most valuable one for
the BCCI.
‘I thought the pink ball moved
a bit more than the SG ball. It
was pretty exciting, the pink ball

the
India Red

and a

winner said after the match.
Veteran glovesman
Parthiv Patel sees future
in Pink ball Test but he conceded that this ball skids a
bit more.
‘I had no problem in
sighting it. During the day,
I could see the ball better.
Not used to getting the
pink ball coming to you.
It’s a matter of getting
used to it but visibility was
not a problem.’
‘As far as future is concerned, too early to say.
Definitely there is a future. But dew could be
a factor. The ball skid
and moved more. Also
I don’t think you can
have Tests in sub-continent using this much
of grass,’ said Parthiv.
NIlesh Subramaniam
I didn’t want to take a chance and hit
the ball in the air.
The right-hander, who seemed to
be cramping towards the end of the
game said. he was okay. ‘It’s better
but it’s not fully gone (cured).’
To a query about his brother getting a hundred the other day and if
he had any similar targets, he said,
‘We don’t have such targets but after
his hundred I spoke to him and told
him because of him there is a lot of
expectation on me.’
‘It is not so easy to hit a hundred
in a T20 game. Yesterday, he (B
Aparajith) played a blistering knock
but not every day you can score
those hundreds.’
‘We failed at crunch times’
Meanwhile, Kovai
Kings wicketkeeper Rohith Ravikumar said the
team failed at
crunch moments and
let the game slip
away.
‘We were upbeat
ahead of the super
over. (Murali) Vijay
was confident he
could hit the ball
out of the park but
it didn’t happen for
us today, so tough luck.
Credit to both teams, we
played an amazing game,’
he said.
On his thoughts on the TNPL,
Rohit said, ‘It is bringing a lot of
unknown talent to the fray. If you
have watched the KPL a lot of people have come out from there. This
is happening on a bigger scale and
we expect a lot of talent to come
out. It is a great opportunity for all
of us so hoping to take it.’

Faf wants SA to play
more Tests like India
A regular in T20 leagues
across the world, du Plessis
however, said Test crickets
remains his top priority
Johannesburg, Aug 27:
Twenty20 skipper Faf du
Plessis backed the longer
format of the game and
said South Africa should
emulate India, who will
be playing as many
du Plessis
as 13 Tests this season at home.
World No. 6 in ICC
rankings, South Africa will be playing 11
Tests this season, but
du Plessis wants the officials to try and get as much
Test cricket as possible at
home.
‘We don’t play a lot of
Tests at home. If you look
at India, this season they
have got 15 Tests coming
up in their country you want to
try and make use of your own
conditions and play as many
Tests as possible,’ du Plessis
was quoted as saying by Espncricinfo.
‘We play a little bit and then
there’s a big break. With the
space the team is in now, we
would like to play as much Test
cricket as possible and try and
build something. We have a
mission as a team and we are
trying to get there.’ A regular in
T20 leagues across the world,
du Plessis however, said Test
crickets remains his top priority.
‘Test cricket is the best
thing to play. That is the challenge you want. You want
to sit after a day’s play as a
bowler ... your toenails are
bleeding and you are extremely
tired and you want to, for the
guys that drink beer, have a sip
at the end and say we gave it
everything.
‘You can’t copy the feeling
of winning a Test match in
any other format, especially in
T20s,’ he said.

Serena Williams
New York, Aug 27:
Top seeds Novak Djokovic and
Serena Williams face challenging
early tests at the US Open following Friday’s draws for the year’s last
grand slam starting on Monday.
Djokovic, who has been bothered
by a wrist injury, faces towering
Jerzy Janowicz of Poland in his
opening match at Flushing Meadows, and is likely to meet 48thranked Jiri Vesely of the Czech
Republic in the second round.
Vesely beat the Serbian world
number one earlier this season on
clay in Monte Carlo.
Serena, recovering from a shoulder injury, drew Russian lefthander
Ekaterina Makarova as her first op-
ponent. The 34-year-old American,
seeking to break her tie with Steffi
Graf for the most grand slam singles
titles in the Open era on 22, has a
4-1 career record against Makarova,
but lost to the Russian in the fourth
round at the 2012 Australian Open.
Serena Williams is in a strong
quarter that also includes fifth seed
Simona Halep of Romania and 16thseeded Australian Sam Stosur, who
beat the American in the 2011 US
Open final.
Djokovic is seeded to face either
Frenchman Richard Gasquet or

have to deal with a young Australian,
Bernard Tomic or Nick Kyrgios, in the
fourth round.
The dangerous Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina, the 2009 champion
who showed in claiming Olympic
silver that he is regaining form after
a long recovery from an injured wrist,
could be there to oppose the Swiss
double slam winner in the quarterfinals.
Fourth-seeded Rafa Nadal, winner
of 14 slams, and fifth seed Milos

showdown with Djokovic.
Rounding out the women’s draw,
second seed Angelique Kerber, who

New Delhi, Aug 27 (PTI):
A meeting of BJP Chief Ministers
and deputy Chief Ministers in which
the party top brass, including Prime
Minister Narendra Modi, will address
them on the agenda of good governance and pro-poor measures got
underway here today.
BJP chief Amit Shah inaugurated
the meeting, which will be addressed
by Modi later in the evening. Party
sources have said better coordination
between the organisation and government, besides a stronger emphasis
on ‘pro-poor’ and developmental
works is at the centre of the exercise.
The Chief Ministers are expected
to speak about their government’s
programmes aimed at executing
the agenda. The meeting comes in
the wake of a day-long workshop of
the party’s core committee leaders
of states on Tuesday in which Modi
pitched for reaching out to all sections
of society, especially the poor, while
Shah underlined the need for expanding the organisation and greater coordination. Modi had said that when the
party is in power, then the aim should
be to win over the masses with the
government’s work.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister
Mehbooba Mufti today met Prime
Minister Narendra Modi at 7 Race
Course residence (RCR) and discussed security situation in the State

with one more civilian killed in firing
by security forces.
Mehbooba told reporter after her
meeting with Prime Minister Narendra
Modi here that youth in the Kashmir
were attacking security forces and
police stations after being provoked
by Pakistan and separatist leaders.
‘I want to tell Pakistan, if it has any
sympathy for Kashmiris, it shouldn`t

the Chief Minister said.
Government sources in Delhi and
Srinagar told media that the Chief
Minister was summoned to Delhi

HARDIK WRITES TO MODI
q Demands release of Patels convicted in 2002 riots cases
Ahmedabad, Aug 27 (PTI):
Quota agitation spearhead Hardik
Patel has demanded the release of
Patel youths convicted in various
riots cases of 2002, but alleged
that Prime Minister Narendra Modi
would not facilitate it as he now
wants to project himself as a ‘secular’ leader to the world.
Patel in a letter to Modi, has listed
102 Patel community members,
who have been awarded life imprisonment in different riot cases
of 2002.
‘Everybody knows that Narendra
Modi first became Chief Minister of
Gujarat taking the benefit of 2002
riots and then become Prime Minister of the country,’ Hardik Patel
said in a letter addressed to Modi
Narayanasamy to
present budget
29 August
Puducherry, Aug 27 (PTI):
Puducherry Chief Minister V
Narayanasamy will present the
2016-17 budget on 29 August in
the Assembly.
The previous AINRC government
headed by Rangasamy had adopted
a Vote on Account Bill in March allocating funds for the first six months
of the current fiscal.
Narayanasamy had held discussions with representatives of industries associations, farmers, government officials among others here as
a pre budget exercise.
Hardik Patel
accusing him of being responsible
for the carnage. ‘Many Patidar youths
have been sentenced (by courts) in
riots cases. I have given a list below,’
he said in the letter.
Patel is at present residing in
Udaipur, as he has been asked to
stay outside Gujarat by the State
High Court as part of one of his bail
conditions. ‘All these Patel youths are
rotting in jails of Gujarat. Modiji is now
Prime Minister. He can recommend
to the President for release of Patel
youths involved in riots and get them
released,’ Hardik said in the letter.
‘But, I know Modiji will not do that
as he wants to show the country and
the world that he is a secular person.
Modiji has misused Gujaratis and
particularly Patidars,’ Hardik alleged.
He then goes on to give a list of various riots cases and number of youths
convicted by courts in this connection.
A year back, Hardik had started his
agitation with a demand for inclusion
of his community in the OBC category
for reservation.
Violence had erupted after he held
a mega rally here on 25 August last
year in which government and private property worth crores of rupees
were damaged and 11 persons, including one policemen, were killed.
Later, he was arrested on sedition charges and spent about nine
months in jail. He was released
thereafter following which he formed
a new team for his agitation. His
old associates like Ketan Patel and
Chirag Patel,
who were co-accused in sedition
case with him have alleged that the
young leader has amassed wealth
in the name of Patel quota agitation. They have also accused him
of ruining the agitation due to his
ambition of becoming a leader at a
young age.

Puducherry, Aug 27 (PTI):
Puducherry Welfare Minister M

in the Union Territory to pay
sustained care and attention for
the welfare of young children.
Handing over Rs 3.51 crore as
grant to 27 NGOs of Puducherry
and Karaikal regions under a
scheme of the Union Women
and Child Development Ministry
here Kandasamy said the grant
was presented to the organisations taking care of abandoned
children, street children and also
adopted by the organisations.
Around 1670 dhildren attached
to the organisations would be
benefitted by the grant. He said
Puducherry Child Protection
Society operating the Central
scheme and attached to the
Department of Social Welfare
should ensure that there was
timely availability of the grants.
He asked the officials of the organisations to be meticulous in
the welfare of the children. He
later told newsmen that there

government to introduce cradle

‘a Southeast Asian country’.
The two men worked there, ‘carrying
out unclassified naval defence work’.
According to the report, the ‘speculation’ is that the data on the Scorpene was removed to serve as a
reference guide for the former naval
officer’s new job. However, the two
men are said to have ‘fallen out with
their employer’, a private company
run by a Western businessman, following which they were sacked and
not allowed inside the building.
The company refused to give them
the data, and sent the data later to
its head office in Singapore where it
was uploaded on an internet server.
However, while the article in its opening lines implies the CD with the data
was delivered to the ‘whistleblower’
some time in April 2013, giving the
timeline from Singapore it says the data
was uploaded on an internet server
on 18 April, 2013, where it could have

Over 7,000 civilians and more than

fresh attack

q ‘PM trying to reverse AAP govt
decisions through Najeeb Jung’
New Delhi, Aug 27 (PTI):
Launching a fresh attack on the LG
and the Centre, Arvind Kejriwal today
charged that Prime Minister Narendra
Modi wants to reverse numerous
decisions of the AAP government
through Najeeb Jung and remove
DCW chief Swati Maliwal who, he
claimed, will be ‘arrested’ soon.
Kejriwal’s outburst on microblogging
site Twitter came a day after Jung
said that he was in the process of
overturning and rectifying ‘illegal decisions’ taken by the AAP government
following the August 4 Delhi High
Court verdict.
Kejriwal claimed
the Lt Governor and the Centre
wanted to ‘reverse’ numerous decisions of public importance, including
the decision to increase minimum
wages and holding discoms
accountable for unscheduled outages, among other measures.
He said Najeeb Jung was ‘subverting’ democracy to protect his ‘chair’.
On the CAG row, the Delhi Chief
Minister said the auditor ‘vehemently
refuses’ to audit advertisement expenses of Centre and other States.
‘Why? CAG under pressure from
BJP?,’ he questioned.
‘Sources- LG n PMO hell bent on
removing Swati Maliwal 4 doing gud

then removed,’ he claimed in a tweet.
‘LG hell bent on removing the team

for unscheduled power cuts. Is it illegal? LG sitting on it. AAP govt asked
for land for 10 hospitals from DDA.
Modi’s LG refused. Was our demand
illegal?,’ the Chief Minister said in a
series of tweets.
Referring to Jung’s statement that
he has tried to keep his intervention
in the government restricted to the
bare minimum, Kejriwal said, ‘If this is
‘least interference’, then what is ‘high
interference’? Shameful subversion
of democracy to protect chair.’

A

He was speaking during the 51st

SUPER (OVER) STUFF
Teams:
Tomorrow’s match
against other religions. Any religion
in the ancient times grew with the
support of the ruler which, in turn,
gave us beautiful art,’ he added. In
this context, he pointed out it was
unfortunate that any official support
to arts and culture of the land was
being protested against.
The Managing Director of News
Today and Maalai Sudar further said
art and religion have to co-exist. ‘That
is how people see it. Hinduism is the
only religion where it can survive
without Gods. We have so much
scope for celebrations. Cultural connect is being lost and that should be
rectified now,’ he noted.
As a suggestion to the academy, he
said non-profit organisations should
not spend on felicitating guests but
rather ask them to bring things like
books.
Jawahar also praised the spontaneity of dramatist ‘Kathadi’ Ramamurthy
(who was one of the guests of the
evening) and said he was a big fan
of his.
Kathadi Ramamurthy, who was at
his witty best, immediately responded
and said he would invite him (Jawahar) as the guest for his next play.
Ramamurthy said it was difficult to
run a Sabha when compared to a
drama troupe and promised to extend
full support to the academy.
The programme came to an end with
the prize distribution for the lucky dip
held earlier.
The celebrations began with a dancedrama Panchaturam presented by
Priya Murle and troupe.
The academy president Justice S
Jagadeesan, secretary N Ethirajan
and treasurer V Srinivasan were
present.

Super Gillies, Kaalai
eye maiden win
R Sathish
Dindigul:
In a clash between two teams looking to
earn a first win, Chepauk Super Gillies will
take on Karaikudi Kaalai in a TNPL game
at NPR College, Dindigul, on Sunday.
Having been outclassed in the lungopener by 45 runs, the Chennai team
will need to regroup quickly against the S
Badrinath-led rivals, who were laid low by VB
Thiruvallur Veerans thanks to B Aparajith’s ton.
All-rounder R Sathish couldn’t inspire Super
Gillies on a poor day for the team and will
have to lead from the front with both
bat and ball and also inspire the
likes of Yo Mahesh and Thalaivan Sargunam to come to
the party.
It is a pretty inexperienced squad and the
importance of Sathish,
Yo Mahesh and S
Vasanth Saravanan
putting their hand
up can’t be overemphasised.
Sathish is
known for his
big-hitting
ways and
thrifty bowling
and has bailed
out Tamilnadu on several occasions. He needs to bring his skills
to the fore if the Super Gillies have
to put up a fight and the batsmen
need to step up.
The Karaikudi outfit on the other
hand, didn’t do too badly and were
blasted away by Aparajith’s superlative
knock. They put up a 160-plus score with
contributions from M Vijay Kumar and R
Srinivasan. Skipper S Badrinath will be
expected to score substantially along with
the aggressive S Aniruda to provide solidity in the batting while
the bowlers would need to
put their performance in the
Thiruvallur Veerans game
behind them and look to
improve.
A win would be crucial
in helping kickstarting a strong run and
both teams would
go all out. Karaikudi Kaalai looks
the stronger team
on paper but in a
T20 game, make
predictions could
prove to be a tad
tricky.

Close matches keep the fans on the edge of their seats and the
Ruby Kanchi Warriors-Lyca Kovai Kings game in TNPL at the
M A Chidambaram stadium in Chennai on Friday was one of them.
The Kings fell short in the Super Over despite the best efforts of
Indian Test opener Murali Vijay. The Warriors stole a win thanks to
the efforts of medium-pacer R Jesuraj.
