Thank You Letter From Kurt Labberton
An enormous thank you to all my fellow
Rotarians and their guests who were kind
enough to attend the May 28th performance of Absinthe. The cast and crew had
a wonderful time working on this production and it was a real delight to share
Frank, Michael, Libby and Rose with all
of you. Since the theme of the play is the
fascinating way a small act of kindness
can change the course of a life.....it seemed
like a natural fit with a group of people
who's motto is Service Above Self...! Once
again.....from all of those involved in Absinthe....thank you!

- REVIEW -
As Patti Powers, in her invocation stated, “we come together on a beautiful
spring day.” The combined clubs of Downtown Rotary, Southwest Rotary,
and Sunrise Rotary, met together on Thursday for the Mary Monroe
Davis Scholarship Award Luncheon. As you entered the large room at the
convention center, Ryan Rodruck, Dulce Guttierez, and Carmen Mendez
greeted you. The event opened with the song My Country Tis of Thee, led
by Eric Silvers with Bob Hamilton on the piano.
President John Adkison welcomed everyone for a ceremony that
highlights the Yakima Rotary Trust, which is the foundation that was
established by all three Yakima Rotary Clubs. Dave McFadden, President
of the Sunrise Rotary Club, and Tressa Stadel of the Southwest Rotary Club,
sat at the head table, along with Joe Falk, a Southwest Rotary member and
attorney who helped establish the Yakima Rotary Trust. Also sitting with
the president were Lois Betzing of Downtown Rotary and Hank Heffernan
of Southwest who has chaired the scholarship committee for six years.
President Adkison showed his appreciation to both Lois and Hank for a
“masterful job for so many years.”
John Adkison voiced a special thank you to Rotarians who helped out
at the event. This included Noël Moxley and Betty Jo Murray who helped
with the registration desk, Jim DeGrasse with audio-visual, and David
Lynx assisting with the newsletter.
The President introduced Sheri Brockway of Sunrise Rotary to speak
about one of the ways that money is raised for the Yakima Rotary Trust’s
annual fundraiser. The Mollie Davis Celebration and memorial golf
tournament is held on Friday, July 17, 2015 at the Country Club. Sheri
spoke about how the Yakima Rotary Trust takes great pride in the
scholarship program, but also takes on projects, and provides funding for
other projects. For example the Gateway Sports Complex, Franklin Park
picnic shelter and playground, the new Yakima Rotary Food Bank, and
the new projects going on in Randall Park, such as a wildlife observation
platform and playground. To help fund all these activities, Brockway
encouraged golfers to attend the golf tournament, and everyone to come
to the dinner. Sponsorships are also welcomed for the event brochure.
The podium was then turned over to the scholarship chairs, Hank
Heffernan and Lois Betzing. Hank began the ceremony through
an introduction of Joe Falk, who he articulated was the person who
orchestrated the establishment of the Yakima Rotary Trust and the
partnership with Yakima Community Foundation. Heffernan said of Joe,
that it is due to people like him that “really make a difference.”
Joe Falk told the audience the story of how he met Mary Monroe Davis
in 1993, and how he helped work out her vision of a scholarship program
for students in Yakima Valley and Yakima County. Joe introduced from
the audience, Megan Tucker, the granddaughter of Mary “Mollie” Davis,
and her fiancé Derrin Davis, head chef at Zesta Cucina. Although Mollie
had a scholarship program in place, Joe Falk and John Rothenbueler
(Sunrise Rotary), worked with her vision to make the scholarship selection
a community process. With Mollie’s passing in 2008 the selection was well
established with the Yakima Rotary Trust for administering the plan and
the Yakima Community Foundation for the responsibility of oversight of
the scholarship. Both of these established that the scholarship program
would be community based. Deb Krautwurm, of the Downtown Rotary
Club, headed the implementation, with the first scholarships presented in
2010. Since 2010, 2,246 applications have been submitted to the scholarship
program. Since then, 222 students have been granted scholarships, and
money that has been committed to scholarships is now about 4.7 million
dollars.

for 4-year colleges, and $3,000 for 2-year college. These scholarships are
renewable up to four college years. The 2015 class includes 19 Freshman,
2 Sophomores, 6 Juniors, and 5 Seniors. Students receiving scholarships
this year, represent 16 high schools.
The scholarship committee invited three previous scholarship students
to speak about their experiences. The first was Madison Hahn, who grew
up in Yakima and received her Bachelors in Nursing at Washington State
University. Madison began with a quote from Napoleon Hill that states,
“you can succeed best and quickest by helping others to succeed.” She has
found this to be true and is honored to have received $15,000 for the last
two years of school. She is now working at Yakima Memorial and plans to
go to Seattle University for a Masters in Nursing. Brenden O’Neill, told the
audience how he attended high school in West Valley, but the scholarship
helped him to go to Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho. He
said of the benefit of the scholarship program, that the “pursuit of a quality
education has not been a question but a constant.” Saul Arambul, a recent
graduate of Heritage University, stated that “things happen for a reason”,
and after attending last year’s luncheon, has decided to pursue a career in
teaching. He is working as a skill-based mentor, and an athletic coach for
basketball and track and field at White Swan High School.
