KITCHENS AND BEDROOMS
THE team at Chesterfield’s Customise Kitchens
promised customers Andy and Julie Morewood a
new kitchen with a ‘wow factor’ and that's exactly
what they delivered... and then some.
The Morewoods chose the family-run company for a major
project at their home in Dronfield Woodhouse after speaking to
several rival operations, and felt there was no comparison with
the service and expertise offered by Customise Kitchens.
Julie said: "The designs the team at Customise came up with
were just so much better than anything the others could
suggest.
"They promised a kitchen with a ‘wow factor’ and that's what
we've got and more. I absolutely
love what they've done with
the space we've got.
“The service was
very friendly and, in
fact, I felt part of
the family every
step of the way.
Everyone was
brilliant from
start to finish
and I can't
fault
any
aspect of the
job."

PUBLIC &
The Morewoods, who moved into TRADE - SUPPLY
their house 19 months ago, decided to
OR FULLY
knock down a wall between the
FITTED
existing kitchen and dining room to
create a much more open feel.
Out went the badly-fitted, dated units, which
had been in situ for about 13 years, and in came a high-gloss,
modern kitchen in a beautifully contrasting cappuchino and
aubergine palette.
Said Julie: "I had originally liked the idea of a red and white
kitchen but the staff at Customise Kitchens suggested this
colour scheme and I couldn't be happier with the way it looks.
They were quite right to advise me to go with this."
Julie, who breeds and shows border collies, was also thrilled
with the way Customise Kitchens worked with her to build in a
dedicated storage space for dog food.
"This illustrates the fact that nothing was too much trouble,"
said Julie.
Now the ex-chef is looking forward to spending time cooking
and baking in her new-look kitchen, along with her four
grandchildren.
"It's great because they have so much space to
run around in," added Julie.

COMMEMORATIVE
stained-glass
window at Henry
Fanshawe School is
being lit up after dark
until the end of
November to mark the
centenary of the
outbreak of the First
World War.
The window was
designed and made some
time between 1918 and
1925 by the school's then
art mistress Lilian Spaven
to honour former pupils
who died during the
conflict.
The school was also due
to hold a memorial
service involving staff,
pupils and members of
the community.
Deputy headteacher
Barry Blessed, who is
leading the project, said: “I've looked at the window many, many times
and thought how the community, which we are very much a part of, could
be made more aware of it.
EYE
drops
“We researched how churches illuminate their windows and installed
uplighting, so that the window can be seen from the road during
November.”
The window stands in part of the school that was built in 1867 in a
room that has had various uses over the years and is currently used for
information technology classes.
A dedication tablet to the school's 1914 to 1918 fallen, at one side of
the showpiece, has been restored for the centenary so its inscription can
be clearly read.
Some damage to the window itself will be repaired later this year by
Sheffield stained glass artist Julia Spall, who has worked on buildings
including Stirling Castle and York Minster.
A service was due to be held in the school's memorial garden, on 11th
November, led by Rev David Markay and featuring readings, poetry and
music.
“We want to remember the fallen from wars but it's also an opportunity
to remember former colleagues and students in our memorial garden,”
said Barry.

Everything I had imagined...and more!
Moving into a new house with her young
family, it was Holly Webster's dream to
have a large, modern kitchen serving as
the heart of the home.
fter knocking down the dividing wall between the small kitchen
and dining room, the project was half way there.
Then the team at Sheffield Kitchen Interiors came in to install a
fully-integrated kitchen in a high-gloss, off-white, finish to compliment
the room's new silver-grey floor and wall tiling. Holly said she was over
the moon with the finished result.
She commented: “I had this look in mind and it's everything I had
imagined... and more. I absolutely love what Sheffield Kitchen Interiors
have done. We had a tiny kitchen in our previous home and so had
been saving to get what we really wanted. Now we get together at tea
time and its just a great, all-round family kitchen that's easy to clean
and looks great.”

Charlie, aged four, and 18month-old Darcey, moved in
to their 1930s semi, at

and have been gradually

They chose Sheffield

and found the look they were

Meadowhead. Paul Fish then
came up with the designs,
with the peninsular hob Holly
wanted as the starting point.
A built-in microwave was one
suggestion Paul made which
was well-received by the
family.
Stylish look for the new kitchen
Holly said the fitting team
members were extremely accommodating when it came to working
around other tradespeople engaged on the job and completed the work
in just two days, working around 12 hours each day.
“I would recommend Sheffield Kitchen Interiors to anyone else,” Holly
added.

EXPERIENCE
Of course, the Abbey, in its heyday, was in Derbyshire. Since then
the site has been swallowed up into Sheffield, and I am sure I am not
alone in hoping that no more of our lovely county, including our town,
suffers a similar fate.
The following week, John and I hosted a wine tasting. This was led
by Andrew from Eckington Wines. Everyone seemed to have an
enjoyable evening, raising more than £400 for The Mayor’s Charity.

Thank you to Andrew, to Robert, for his cooking, and to everyone who
supported the event.
Saturday the 25th was the opening of the Poppy Appeal in Dronfield.
John and I have received an invitation, from the Oberburgermeister of
our twin town Sindelfingen, to their Day of Remembrance. We would
very much have liked to accept but, unfortunately, we were not able to
make the date and have had to decline.
John and I have also had the pleasure of welcoming our new MEP,
Andrew Lewer, to The Barn, and introducing him to Mike Slinn, who
has been a driving force behind the Barn project. He also met Prof
David Hey, who has done a great deal of research into the old
buildings of Dronfield - and there are more than you might think Maria, the Barn’s Activities Manager, and Ann Brown from The Old
Dronfield Society.
Also there to welcome us to her manor house was “Alice Deincourt”
in the person of Maureen Taylor, resplendent in period costume.
The MEP is on The Committee for Culture and Education at the
European Parliament and was fascinated by what he saw and heard
about the building, both its history and its planned future.
The next things I have to do, is to get ready for a Coffee Morning
tomorrow, and then prepare to chair the Town Council meeting on
Monday - just in case you think this job is all fun!

Have you considered becoming a foster carer?
Here are five reasons why you should apply to foster with Five Rivers:

HE 27-point winter check and cooling service
provided by the professional and friendly team at
Dronfield Woodhouse’s Stubley Lane Auto Centre is just
the thing to beat the perils of snow and ice.
T
The business is owned by brothers Mark and Chris Gleadle,
who have more than half-a-century of experience in the motor
trade between them, so they know how to help prevent problems
the winter may throw at us.
All roads lead
to Stubley
Mark said: “Although the weather so far this year has been fairly
mild it’s important not to get caught out because problems can
keep you off the road and be costly to fix.
“For example, not a lot people think about the need to change
their anti-freeze which can lose its strength over time and if the
engine freezes up, it could be ruined.”
Other checks the auto centre will make include lights, wipers
and windscreen wash, and tyres. It’s vital to have tyres with
a good grip at this time of year when there is black ice about.”
Added Mark: “Some people only think about the outside of their
tyres but the whole tyre needs to be inspected to make sure it’s
safe.”
Staff at Stubley Lane Auto Centre have completed training over
and above what’s required including courses in advanced
diagnostics.
The auto centre has a prestigious Automotive Technician
Accreditation and is also a member of the Good Garage Scheme
to ensure peace of mind for customers.
For hassle-free maintenance and repair, the business offers a
free car collection and delivery service within a three-mile radius.
Winter checks can be done on any make or model and take
about an hour.

Maria is proud to be part of the team that created the new visitor centre

And there’s more to Maria than just heritage. She’s an accomplished

Sheffield.
But for now, she concentrating on her new role in Dronfield. Reviewing
current and future activities she said: “The quilting project continues at a
pace, with the adult group taking a unique artistic approach to designing a
quilt based around Medieval Dronfield.
“Local junior schools are using the Trust’s digital archive to research and
design images for their 17th/18th century-inspired quilts.”
Maria says she is looking forward to the creation of a 3D model
framework of the Barn, as well as exploring lots of digital developments for
the interpretation
She adds: “Volunteers are also carrying out extensive historical
research and we look forward to an illustrated talk by our patron, Prof
David Hey, with the title Dating Dronfield’s Historic Buildings. This will
take place on Wednesday, January 21st, and will be a joint venture with
Dronfield Civic Society.”
There is lots to look forward to, says Maria: “If you have interests in local

Splinters always welcome members

Church St changes
There’s something old, something new on
Church Street where one of Dronfield’s most
historic buildings has been converted into
five spectacular cottages. Dronfield Eye’s
Deborah Wain takes a look around
H
OME-buyers are being given a chance to live in a 16th
century barn - part of Dronfield's earliest settlement following construction work to turn it into cottages.
The former tithe old barn, in Church Street, has been saved from
dereliction by a painstaking project to convert it into five unique
properties.
The cottages show off the original structure's huge timber cruck
beams which tree-ringing suggests were erected some time between
1537 and 1562.
More than 150 people took a tour of the development during an open
weekend organised by estate agents Saxton Mee to launch the sale of
the cotttages. Prices for the two and three-bedroomed homes started
at £285,000.
Saxton Mee director Tim Heaton said work on the Grade II listed
building had been carried out over 18 months.
"It's fantastic that a historic building like this has been brought back to
life to become an integral part of the old village. As you'd expect,
interest in the development has been strong and the first one was sold
almost immediately.”
A second cottage was snapped-up shortly afterwards.
During recent years, the barn had been used by local companies,
mostly for storage, but the roof had fallen in and a tree was protruding
through the structure.

The building team from Renwick Stoneworks, based at Middleton-byYoulgrave in Derbyshire, used reclaimed gritstone to rebuild the

rear to add a floor to the single storey building.
During the project, workers stumbled upon an old well. It has been
turned in to a feature with a reinforced glass covering.

projects including the development of a collections web portal and working
on the Limestone Journeys landscape programme in the wider community
and area.
Maria is proud to be part of the team that created the new visitor centre
and saw Creswell Crags secure a nomination on the UK's tentative list for
World Heritage Sites.
And there’s more to Maria than just heritage. She’s an accomplished
musician and has played piano and violin in orchestras in Leeds and
Maria says she is looking forward the creation of a 3D model framework
of the Barn, as well as exploring lots of digital developments for the
interpretation
She adds: “Volunteers are also carrying out extensive historical
research and we look forward to an illustrated talk by our patron, Prof
David Hey, with the title Dating Dronfield’s Historic Buildings. This will
take place on Wednesday, January 21st, and will be a joint venture with
Dronfield Civic Society.”
There is lots to look forward to, says Maria: “If you have interests in local

Station on
the move?
Dear Dronfield Eye,
A MEETING instigated by Friends of Dronfield Station
and the Dronfield Civic Society heard Network Rail
outline its plans to electrify the rail line between
Bedford and Sheffield which would require significant
track and lineside changes.
The meeting was also attended by representatives from
Derbyshire County Council, North East Derbyshire County
Council and Dronfield Town Council
Although replacing diesel trains by those powered by
electricity is to be welcomed, the medium-term impact on
Dronfield could be significant as the Lea Road railway bridge
(a listed structure) is too low for the new trains to pass
underneath. This means the bridge will have to be raised or
the track lowered (or both).
It could also mean that Dronfield Station will have to be
moved some distance away from its present location.
The changes proposed (particularly those to the Lea Road
bridge) could cause severe disruption to access routes in
and out of Dronfield town centre. Also, the land adjacent to
the current station car park, earmarked as an eventual car
park extension, will be required for a period by Network Rail
as a work site.
The survey work for electrification will start over the next
two years with a view to completion of the project by
December 2020.
Mike Penney,
Friends of Dronfield Station
Making a big impression
in just a little space...
HEN Pam Goodall called in at the H20
Bathroom Solutions showroom looking
for ideas to revamp the en-suite in her
master bedroom, a balance was needed in
terms of design.
W
The modest amount of available space meant Pam wanted clean,
contemporary lines but, at the same time, she was keen for the new
look to be in keeping with her home's traditional features as she
lives in a former coachhouse. She also wanted to incorporate some
of the accent colours from the property's main bathroom.
The team at H20 helped Pam, who shares her Handsworth home
with partner John Browse, find the perfect solution in the form of
stylish white furniture combined with tiling offering a whitewashed
floorboard effect, which runs along the floor and continues as the
backdrop to the shower.
Pam is thrilled with the finished result, which was every bit as
impressive as she'd imagined when she first visited H20's showroom
and saw the high quality products on display.
She said: "I visited a few companies and the quality of the fittings
and tiles drew me to them initially but they were also friendly and
listened to what
I wanted.
"I wasn't
disappointed
when it came to
having the work
done, because
the service was
brilliant and the
fitter excellent.
He paid attention to
all the small details. For example, we had some pipework
under the wash basin which has been cleverly concealed.
"The en-suite had to be neat, but not too contemporary, in that it
looked out of place with the rest of the house and that's exactly
what I've ended up with. I love it!"

appointments also available by request, visit H20

The building team from Renwick Stoneworks, based at Middleton-byYoulgrave in Derbyshire, used reclaimed gritstone to rebuild the
stonework. A major part of the work involved excavating land at the
rear to add a storey to the single story building.
During the project, workers stumbled upon an old well. It has been
turned in to a feature with a reinforced glass covering.

Station on

I’ve also received a couple of ‘Get Well Soon’ cards after a recent
delicate operation. When my owners woke me early one morning to
tell me I was going out for the day and that they would be spending
some money on me, a trip to the vets wasn’t what I had in mind!
I was soon back chasing leaves in Graves Park and making friends
with many mutts including Jasper, who told me he had also appeared
in a magazine.
Mabel, who will be two at Christmas, was the first pooch to email
me. Thanks, Mabel! A Staffy, she lives at Coal Aston and her
favourite walk is through Whinacre Woods, but she is equally happy
playing in the local parks with her many doggy friends or rambling
through Frith Wood. Mabel lives with Helen, Dean, Hannah (12) and
harry’s
E Y E
Thomas (10) and goes almost everywhere with them. She has a very
special bond with Hannah and the pair attend agility classes.
The recent colder snap saw me receive a lovely early
Christmas present and you can see from the picture
above how much I love it (I’m smiling, honest!). It’s
a super duper thermal ‘self-heating’ pet bed from
the Scruffs people. It’s soooo comfortable. Its
filling includes foil layers, high density foam and
air pockets to make sure I stay warm all winter
long. Just to make sure, I like to lay on it right
next to the radiator. My owners say there’s now
no need for me to stake a claim for the sofa. As if!
Next time your folks are out and you get your paws
on their i-pad or laptop, take a look at
Mabel
www.petslovescruffs.com, then write your own letter
to Santa Claws.
Finally, my owners were on the internet themselves just the other
day, chuckling at a list of Bassett Hound rules. “That’s so true,” I
heard them say, so see what you think. By the way, they don’t know
these rules were amended by a Bassett!
1. The Bassett is only allowed in the kitchen.
2. The Bassett is allowed in certain other rooms.
3. The Bassett is allowed in certain other rooms but has to stay off
the furniture.
4. The Bassett is allowed to climb only on the old furniture.
5. The Bassett is allowed on any furniture he chooses.
6. The Bassett must sleep in his own bed.
7. The Bassett is allowed on your bed, but only when invited.
8. The Bassett can sleep on your bed whenever he likes, but not
under the duvet.
9. The Bassett can sleep under the duvet every night.
10. The Bassett allows humans to sleep under the duvet with him.

When planning for retirement it’s worth noting that State Pensions may not
produce the same level of income that you will have been accustomed to
whilst working and it’s important to start thinking early about how best to
build up an additional retirement fund. You’re never too young to start a

up a decent fund in later life.

HEN passing Dronfield Henry Fanshawe School, or
when attending, you may have notice the stained-glass
window that faces Chesterfield Road.
More noticeable after the recent clearing of the bank, the window
depicts St George with the words “In honour of the old boys of this
school who gave their lives in the Great War”.
Designed and made by the art mistress, Miss Lillian Spaven (who
worked at the school for 19 years, 1906-1925) the window has two
stone tablets, one either side one with the names of those who died
in the First World War and the other with those who died in the
Second World War.
The school is currently in the process of raising money to refurbish
the plaques and repair damage to the window, which is situated in
teenage

what was once old school hall, now the E-Learning Centre.
This year marks the centenary of the First World War, a war that
changed Britain’s, and the world’s future. It is estimated that,
including soldiers and civilians, 16 million died as a result of the
Great War with a further 21 million wounded.
As usual, a Remembrance Sunday service was held at the
memorial statue, outside of the library, where citizens of Dronfield
presented wreaths and paid their respects to all those who served.
To mark this anniversary, the memorial window at Henry Fanshawe
is being illuminated throughout November in memory of men and
women who have fought for their country. In addition, the school
was to hold a memorial service on 11th November at 11am.
Representatives from forms attended, along with the choir,
musicians, Head Boy and Head Girl, Miss Roche (Headteacher) and
Rev David Marqay. Miss Roche, along with the Head Girl and Boy,
performed readings and presented wreaths in the school’s memorial
garden.
So, next time you travel past the school at night, perhaps on your
way home from work, look out for the memorial window and
remember all those who fought and gave their lives for you.

RONFIELD and the surrounding villages take on a
particular charm at this time of year as the Christmas
decorations go up in homes, schools, businesses, shops, pubs
and restaurants.
D
There is always so much to do, with many special events being
organised: concerts, carol services and parties galore.
It’s an important time of the year for local independent businesses and
an opportunity for all of us to show our support for them. A great way of
helping them is by backing the annual Small Business Saturday UK
campaign, where we are all urged to use our nearby independent
outlets on Saturday, December 6th.
Small Business Saturday UK is a grassroots, non-political, noncommercial campaign, which highlights small business success and
encourages consumers to ‘shop local’ and support small companies in
their communities. The day itself takes place on the first shopping
Saturday in December each year.
Other dates are important in December too, and for local children a
highlight of the Christmas holidays is the appearance of Santa’s Sleigh
in the run-up to the big day. Santa tours various parts of Dronfield, with
a little help from volunteers at The Rotary Club of Dronfield. You can
see him on the following dates:
Fri, 19th Dec, 6.30-8.30pm at Firthwood Dr, Stonelow Rd, Firthwood Rd,
Barnard Ave, Ferndale Rd, Falcon Rd, Warren Rise, Oakhill Rd,
Holmesdale Rd, Marsh Ave.
Sat, 20th Dec, 6.30-8.30pm at Coniston Rd, Ashford Rd, Ravensdale

Each year, hundreds of people trust the shop, on the SheffieldDronfield border, to produce the delicious centrepiece to their
festive feast. And orders are already flying in, not just for turkey but
for other home-reared meats including geese, chicken, lamb, pork,
and beef.
The shop was established in 2007 and is overseen by master
butcher Peter Clarke, who has over 30 years in the trade. The
business is reknowned for offering quality, ethically-produced food
at competitive prices. The fact that all animals are reared on the
farm keeps costs low, as well as ensuring the meat has the best
possible taste.
Border View is the main supplier of turkeys to Sheffield's
prestigious Baldwin's Omega restaurant and its customers travel
from far outside the area.
In addition to its home-reared meats, the shop offers home-grown
potatoes, local cheeses, home-made pies and a range of sausages,
including gluten-free ones.

EYE
on food & drink
‘Tater pie & Turkish
It’s the time of year when most diners begin to
think of turkey... but over in Eckington that
comes with a capital ‘T’. Mike Firth reports
T
HE traditional taste of Turkey meets up with the best of
British at the under-new-ownership Truly Scrumptious cafe
and restaurant in Eckington.
The last time I called in this building it was home to a family-run
glazing business. Now it’s clear to see that great food and quality
drinks are all in the frame.
The new owner is Mark Taylor, from Bradway, who tells the tale that
he called in for a coffee one Wednesday and enjoyed it so much that
by the Friday he had bought the restaurant!
Visiting one lunchtime with Dronfield Eye colleague Samantha we
weren’t quite so decisive, but we were amazed at how large and spik
and span the premises were, with gleaming cutlery and fresh flowers
on most of the tables and framed Pete
McKee prints on the walls.
Whether you are seeking an all-day
breakfast, a hearty lunch, a treat to
remind you of your summer holiday in
Turkey or simply a slice of delicious
cake with either a coffee or a glass of
wine, Truly Scrumptious will welcome
you any day of the week.
We chose to sit at one of the tables,
but we could have parked ourselves
at the cofffee bar, on tall stools by the
window or even in the seating area
outdoors.
With a busy afternoon and evening
ahead of me, my eyes lit up at the
mention of one of the
venue’s specialities,
home-made Meat
and Potato Pie
(£5.99). It was most
certainly scrumptious,
with lots more tender
meat than potato,
and served with
pots of home-made
mint sauce, mushy
peas, onion gravy and great chips.
Across the table, Sam - who had visited Turkey just a few months
earlier - tucked into her selection of Turkish Tapas (£3.99), featuring a
tasty cous-cous, potatoes and vegetables in yoghurt. Dressed with
tomato and a slice of lemon, Sam’s platter looked particularly colourful
and tasted delicious.
We shared a helping of fabulous garlic mushrooms, topped with
cheese.
Elsewhere, other folk were chilling out with light lunches but we were
all eyeing up the magnificent selection of cakes on display. Restaurant
manager Louise advised us that the coffee and walnut, chocolate and
carrot cake creations were the best sellers. Next time, for sure!
Truly Scrumptious is open from 8.30am every day of the week,
offering a selection of breakfasts including a particular favourite of
mine, smoked salmon and scrambled egg.
Many of the ingredients are sourced locally, including meats from
Povey Farm in the Moss Valley.
The licensed restaurant is currently open only until 5pm each day, but
if you like what you see you can hire it out for any function, with your
own private Turkish chef.

Building objections
D
RONFIELD residents attended November’s Town Council
meeting to make their feelings known about two
controversial local planning applications.
One group voiced objections to revised plans which have been
submitted to build six large properties on land between Green Lane and
Park Avenue. They claimed the development would have a major
detrimental impact on the area.
Councillors, particularly concerned about access to the site down what
is currently a footpath to Cliffe Park and a school playing field, voted to
request the planning authority to make a site visit, in the company of a
highways engineer.
Said Coun Graham Baxter: “We have objected to this before but the
revised scheme seems to be even worse.”
Other residents protested at proposals to convert an existing bungalow
into a larger two-storey home at 9, Oxclose Drive, Dronfield Woodhouse.
Councillors expressed concerns about access for construction traffic
and again requested that a site visit should be made by planners.
Another resident highlighted dangers at Snape Hill Lane / Green
Lane, raising concerns about speeding traffic cutting the corner of the
junction.
She pointed out that while both Green Lane and Holmley Lane have
traffic calming measures, there are no such tactics employed to reduce
the speed of vehicles on Snape Hill Lane.
Town Councillors agreed to invite County Councillor Janet Hill to visit
the junction.

it’s hard to think of

T
HERE are lots of reasons why people get on their bikes.
Whether it’s to get to work, to get some exercise or simply for
leisure, there’s one thing that is vital for all cyclists - and that’s cycle
paths.
Dronfield is ideally placed for cyclists. It’s surrounded by beautiful
countryside and right in between Sheffield and Chesterfield.
So why aren’t there more trails for cyclists? Why isn’t there an
easy route from Sheffield, via Dronfield, and straight into
Chesterfield?
As a passionate cyclist who lives in Dronfield, this is something very
close to my heart. So when I heard about a campaign by local cyclist
Tracey Conroy, I was keen to get involved.
Tracey likes to go cycling with her family but has struggled to find
suitable routes near her home in Dronfield. She has had a fantastic
idea that the bridleways could be used to make a circular route from
Hallowes to Sheffield Road and Unstone.

It would also be great if we could link the existing Trans-Pennine
Trail along the Chesterfield Canal to create a route from Dronfield to
Chesterfield and Rother Valley Country Park.
I recently became a member of the Chesterfield Cycle Campaign
which has been very successful in improving facilities for cyclists in
and around the town.
It would be great if we could set up a similar campaign group in
Dronfield and start working on improved cycle routes, not just here
but throughout the whole of North East Derbyshire.
It can become a vicious circle. People don’t use their bikes because
there aren’t any cycle paths nearby, so improving these routes
doesn’t become a priority.
We need to make it a priority.

Finger-tip beauty
A
FTER months of nails extensions, my natural nails were in
desperate need of rescuing.
A regular manicure just wasn’t going to make the grade - step up to
the plate leading nail care specialist Bio-Sculpture Gel. A visit to
Greendale’s Tiger Lily Hair & Beauty salon for an appointment with nail
technician Helen Fuide was all I needed to transform my weak,
peeling, unsightly, poor nails into talons I could be proud of.
The Bio Sculpture treatment was one of the original durable gel
manicures available. unlike many other extensions and enhancements,
Bio Sculpture, strengthens and promotoes the growth of your natural
nail. Just what I needed to get mine on the road to recovery!
As Helen expertly began the preparation of my nails with a little
cuticle care and tiny amount of buffing, I was left to deliberate over the
colour of my gel polish. With a full spectrum of colours to choose from,
I was struggling to decide. But by the time Helen applied a vitamin
When your nails have taken a hammering,
there’s no better feeling than a visit to a talented
nail technician. Dronfield Eye’s Helen Firth
booked herself in at Tiger Lily Hair & Beauty
dose to my nails, again to aid their recovery, I had narrowed my
options down to two. After further deliberation, I plumped for a rich,
dark plum colour interestingly named “On The Dark Side”.
The application of the Bio Sculpture Gel is simple - base coat, two
coats of colour, followed by the high gloss top coat. However, this is far
more than a gel manicure treatment. The give away is in the name, this
is an enhancing, sculpting treatment for your nails. And for selfconfessed perfectionist Helen, it is the ideal treatment to be offering.
Each coat (especially the final top coat) is delicately treated to offer a
perfect nail shape with no ridges in sight. The tips of the nail can also
be built up to add length and even out the shape and length of your
nails for a perfect manicure finish.
I wanted to keep my length short but three or four needed the shape
and length looking at to match nails on other fingers.
We chatted away as Helen carefully worked her way through the
delicate process of transforming each nail and, with a sprinkle of fairy
dust and a flash of her magic wand, the miracle was complete.
Two amazing pieces of gold nail art hand drawn like two
masterpieces by Helen on each ring finger completed the look. I was
delighted with the result. I had nails I was proud to show off.
In addition to the nail treatments offered by Helen, the salon is happy
to welcome beauty therapist Beki to their team, providing an array of
beauty treatment from waxing to facials. For more information, or to
book an apppointment, contact Tiger Lily on 01246 292666 or visit the
salon at Unit 2, Greendale Shopping Centre, Dronfield.

on food & drink
‘Tater pie & Turkish
It’s the time of year when most diners begin to
think of turkey... but over in Eckington that
comes with a capital ‘T’. Mike Firth reports
T
HE traditional taste of Turkey meets up with the best of
British at the under-new-ownership Truly Scrumptious cafe
and restaurant in Eckington.
The last time I called in this building it was home to a family-run
glazing business. Now it’s clear to see that great food and quality
drinks are all in the frame.
The new owner is Mark Taylor from Bradway who tells the tale that he
called in for a coffee one Wednesday and enjoyed it so much that by
the Friday he had bought the restaurant!
Visiting one lunchtime with Dronfield Eye colleague Samantha we
weren’t quite so rash, but we were amazed at how large and spik and
span the premises were, with gleaming cutlery and fresh flowers on
most of the tables and framed Pete

Another resident highlighted dangers at the Snape Hill Lane / Green
Lane, raising concerns about speeding traffic cutting the corner of the
junction.
She pointed out that while both Green Lane and Holmley Lane have
traffic calming measures, there are no such tactics employed to reduce
the speed of vehicles on Snape Hill Lane.
Town Councillors agreed to invite County Councillor Janet Hill to visit
the junction.

When it comes to
cycling provision,
it’s hard to think of
a town with fewer
facilities than
Dronfield. Natascha

changed

Some funds, along with donations from other sections of the club, have
bought a defibrillator for the clubhouse.
Lady captain Judith Race handed over the cheque to BHF's Sheffield
