Curricular
Work in the
library
A library
should be
much more
than the
physical space
where
materials are
kept. It is
important for
the library to
be connected
with the
educational
work.
The school library as a centre of school life
• Centre of information (using non-fiction books,
dictionaries, computers, internet)
• Reading corner (beanbags, seats) / rest area
• Media competence (orientation in the library, opening up
the library, using computer and internet)
• Class room (for reading lessons, information extraction
using books and/or computer/internet, for
films/presentations)
• Independent learning (using the media “book” as one
possibility to get information)
• Presence library
• Library to borrow books

Implication
of the
families
The
promotion of
reading and
writing goes
beyond
teaching.
The
implication of
the families
is basic for
good results.
School between demand and reality…..
• Reading together in the family seems to get lost
• Reading aloud seems to get lost
• Children are let alone –TV/computer as nannies
• Students often don’t know the book – but the film
Nevertheless or perhaps because of:
• 1st grade: Letter for the parents by the Ministry of Education
about the importance of reading – not only in the school but
also in the families (reading aloud....)
• Class teachers talk continuously with parents about the key
competence “reading”
• Books as class literature
• Information evenings with the parents
• “Reading mothers” in the classes
• Workshops organised by parents during the “Reading Day”

Interactions
with the
public library
The fluent
contact (good
relationship)
with the public
library of
reference
helps to share
resources,
generate
activities and
create use
habits.
The next big library is the Stadtbibliothek (city library) in
Kaiserslautern (about 150 000 media). Many students use
this possibility.
For teachers it is possible
• to organise guided tours for students to visit the
Stadtbibliothek (“Library license for Kids”)
• to rent thematic boxes like “Fairy tales, animals, pirates”
etc.
• to participate in the project “Kaiserslautern is reading”
The Stadtbibliothek is offering also book packages (up to
200-300 books for 6 months) to complete the school library
(same lending system).

Any other
initiative, that
does not fit in
the previous
sections, but
considered
excellent in
the
improvement
of reading
and writing
skills and in
school
libraries.
