Official Opening of Midleton
Northern Relief Road
BAM (Ascon) delivers key Infrastructure Projects
BAM, formerly Ascon, has successfully delivered another key
infrastructure project for the Cork region with the completion of
the Midleton Northern Relief Road. The new road officially
opened on Monday by the Minister for Transport, Mr. Noel
Dempsey TD, adds to a growing list of major schemes recently
completed by BAM for the people of Cork. These include Cork
Airport, Kinsale Road Fly Over, UCC IT Building at Western
Road, Revenue Offices at Blackpool, County Hall and County
Library.
The Midleton Northern Relief Road brings a significant upgrade
to the town’s infrastructure and incorporates a new railway
bridge, essential to opening of the Cork-Midleton rail link later
this summer. The bypass will play a major role in reducing traffic
congestion along Main Street - thus improving safety and the
business environment in the town. The Minister also officiated at
the opening of another BAM infrastructure project in West Cork.
The New Pier at Baltimore provides essential access for both the
fishing and tourist industries in the West Cork town and is a significant boost to the business community in advance of the tourist
season.
BAM Contractors, which is celebrating its 50th year in construction in Ireland, is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Royal BAM
Group of the Netherlands. The decision to rebrand Ascon/Rohcon
as BAM Contractors is part of a strategic goal to strengthen the
BAM brand globally. The Group operates in thirty countries
worldwide and is involved in all aspects of construction and
development, with a turnover of 10bn.
Other major Cork projects currently being undertaken by BAM
include the New Marymount Hospice at Curraheen, Nursing
Homes at Ballincollig and Farranlea Road, The Aldi distribution
centre at Mitchelstown, The Castlelake residential development at
Carrigtwohill, The Mallow Flood Relief Scheme and the Rail
Access Bridge at Lower Glanmire Road.
BAM Contractors would like to wish Cork County Council and
the Baltimore & Skibbereen Harbour Boards every success with
their latest infrastructural developments.

Allocation for private
dwellings of 2,900,000
Michael Ahern T.D. welcomes the announcement of funding for
private house grants for older people and people with disabilities.
Cork County Council - Southern Division received an allocation
for private dwellings in 2009 of 2,900,000 this is an increase
from 2‰ million in 2008. The grants are administered by the
Local Authorities and over the past 10 years up to 609 million has
been allocated to the Local Authorities, assisting almost 86 thousand older people and people with disabilities to improve their
housing conditions under these Schemes. The revised Scheme targets the available resources to those in most need.
Michael Ahern T.D. welcomes the decision to expand the Post
Leaving Certificate places from September 2009. At present there
are 30,188 PLC places nationwide and 28,000 of these are allocated to VEC’s, the rest are to Voluntary, Community and
Comprehensive Schools. A further 1,500 places have now been
approved to bring the total number of approved places to 31,688
in 2009/2010 academic year. To obtain a place on these courses
one should apply to Cork County VEC.
Michael Ahern T.D. has recently been informed by former
Minister Noel Ahern that he approved a grant of 400,000 to fund
remedial works at the Youghal Harbour in 2009. This funding is
in respect of the repair of the walls of the pier head and to Greens
Quay. The Minister stated that it is now up to the Local Authorities
to get on with the work and to draw down the funding from the
Department and complete same.

Castlemartyr 0-11
Castlemartyr made the journey to Caherlag on Sunday last the
23rd of May and returned home empty handed, after been given a
lesson in hurling by the home team in this JHL Div. 1 fixture. With
the championship game versus Cloyne only a month away, Barney
Lawton has a mammoth task on his hands to get his troops firing
by then. Best for the Reds over the hour was Brian Lawton who
registered a tally of 8 points.
Castlemartyr 1-7

In a lively game of hurling, Castlemartyrs second string gave a
good account of themselves over the hour before losing out narrowly to Watergrasshill in this JHL Div. 3 fixture in Castlemartyr

LADYSBRIDGE LADY IS CAMOGIE'S LEADING LIGHT
By Christy Parker
The first decade of this century will be marked as a period when
east Cork’s role in the evolvement of Gaelic games was unique and
considerable. For most followers of the native codes that immediately suggests Youghal man Christy Cooney’s term as GAA president. Less heralded has been a similar, parallel appointment. Joan
O’Flynn, born, reared and sent out to hurl in Ladysbridge, assumed
the Cumann Camogaiochta na nGael Presidency last April. Both
presidents now lend the region a unique placement in the national
arena.
The daughter of the late Seamus and Margaret O’Flynn, Jane is to
the GAA manor born. Seamus was a renowned east Cork GAA
administrator and her brother Dennis is a prominent referee and
PRO with Fr. O’Neill’s. When Joan, no less dedicated, took up
camogie at 15, a lifetime’s journey had begun.
Honours on the field would prove evasive for the forward-laterturned-goalkeeper, amounting to an early County Championship
medal with Fr. O’Neill’s and, over a decade later, a Kildare Junior
Championship with her adopted Celbridge. Throughout her career
though, the game would bring gold to her life.
Joan attended St. Mary’s High School, Midleton before attaining a
BA in English and Irish at UCC followed by a Masters in Equaility
Studies at UCD. Free-spirited jaunts in Europe and America followed before she took up work with Action Group for Irish Youth
in London. It was the 1980’s and 40,000 emigrants were leaving
Ireland annually. Joan’s position was to help co-ordinate the various strands of help available to those seeking survival in England
before and after they left home.
The mass migration of Irish culture meant that "GAA and camogie clubs were popping up all over the place," she recalls. Had Fr.
O’Neill’s arrived in London, Joan could not have become more
involved as she lined out with the aptly titled London Irish
Camogie Club. In 1987, she was a member of the first London representative side.
Seven years later, Joan reversed her emigration, acquiring her
present job as Communications and Programmes manager with
government advisory body, Combat Poverty. She settled in
Celbridge, where she still resides.
The subsequent 15 years has seen the lady from Ladysbridge
climb the administrative ranks in Leinster. She has served as
County Chairperson, was both Secretary and PRO of Kildare
Camogie Board and was a Kildare delegate on the Leinster
Camogie Council. At national level she has been Chair of the
National Development Committee for Camogie and was part of
the Camogie Association’s Management Committee.
Joan’s presidential post is wide-ranging, with "a lot of representational duties," diversifying into promotional and development
roles. "Its all positive stuff," she advises, "I get a lot of energy
from it." She tends to use the term ’opportunity’ quite a lot and a
month into her three-year tenure, she employs it in an early vision
of her preferred legacy. "I want to ensure there are opportunities
for children everywhere to play the game," she says. "My opportunity to play came at 15 when fantastic voluntary workers formed
a club in Ballymacoda. But if that had happened ten years earlier,
perhaps a lot more girls would have taken up camogie." She proceeds, "I want to help establish clubs where there aren’t any. I also
want to secure and strengthen the refereeing, coaching and volunteer sides of our game." .
The National Development committee’s Strategic Plan is the vehicle on which to move these goals along. It provides a wide focus
of the game nationally and the picture Joan sees emerging is heartening. "There are 530 clubs and 100,000 registered members and
it’s growing," she enthuses. "I was in Piltown, Co. Kilkenny
recently and there were three All-Ireland Under-16 finals on one
day at A, B and C levels involving six counties. Tyrone and
Westmeath contested the C final and that indicates the game is
spreading outside the traditional hurling or camogie counties."
"Furthermore," she elaborates, "Mayo, which had no camogie club
five years ago, now has three. Kerry has revived the game to pro-
vide six clubs. Galway, Cork,
Wexford, Tipp, Limerick, Dublin,
Antrim and Derry are all very
strong camogie areas at various
levels." (Kilkenny, thanks be to
God, aren’t as marauding as their
male counterparts but she says
they are cleaning up at under-age
level. This suggests they’ll take
over the bloody country altogether before the year is out!)
Despite it’s pre-eminence as a
football county her adopted
Kildare has 19 clubs, mostly arising from strong pockets of hurling
in its northern echelons like
Celbridge, Leixlip and Kilcock. Much of this growth is related to
population movement resultant from the boom economic years.
For example Celbridge, being approximate to Dublin, now has a
19,000 population. The consequential increase in leisure and
sporting outlets can serve to integrate new arrivals into a community "and often the GAA fills that demand," Joan observes. Where
hurling thrives, camogie tends to follow fortune.
A development team of eight officers assembled four years ago is
also driving participation levels. "Two of them work with post primary schools and the rest are designated to enhancing the game in
traditionally strong areas and establishing it in others," she
explains. The organisation’s strategy is establish a structure
"whereby a camogie club becomes a unit attached to a GAA club,"
she continues. This strengthens both organisations standing in the
community and consolidates their sharing of facilities and
resources.
If participation and facilities have improved, Joan is at pains to
stress that standards have also risen. "In recent years we’ve made
a concentrated effort make quality coaching more available," she
says. "We’re involved with Coaching Ireland and last March we
launched Foundation and Level1 coaching manuals, so coaches
can develop their own skills and abilities. The better the input at
clubs the better it will be at inter-county level."
For all that, the future is a constant challenge. She sees the game’s
involvement in local communities -and vice versa- as paramount.
Many of those she would entice through the gate, either as players
or spectators, are those beyond the ’GAA tradition.’ It may be
unfair to say that the strong emergence of other sports across playgrounds, school fields and courts has awakened the national game
exponents to the need for greater inclusiveness. Yet it has certainly coincided with it. "I can see the merit in marketing a ’recreational format’ of camogie," she muses, "similar to tag rugby. I think it
would help attract newcomers."
Defining camogie’s support base as "mostly family orientated,"
she says she’ll be "working towards improving its profile, ideally
to the point ideally whereby camogie stars are instantly recognisable a sin other sports." She emphasises the need for "good cooperation with the media," and aspires towards "greater live TV
and radio coverage" as her organisation strives to market the game
more widely. " If people see the quality product we offer, they will
support us," she believes.
The game’s relatively low profile irks her considerably, not by
assumption of automatic entitlement, but because she has deep
faith in its intrinsic worth. "Ten years ago it was a 12-a-side game
but now it’s 15-a-side on a full scale hurling pitch. It has become
far more exciting as a result. Coaching is much improved, fitness
levels are high and it’s extremely athletic and skilful. So yes, it’s
frustrating sometimes, because you want a wider audience to see
all that."
Travelling the country, she derives "incredible satisfaction from
seeing so many young players, the great organisational levels
within clubs and the commitment and enjoyment of the game."
Meanwhile the main downside centres is one shared by most
Midleton News.....June 4th 2009
LADYSBRIDGE LADY IS CAMOGIE'S
LEADING LIGHT
sporting organisations, if not by all associations nowadays.
"Money," she sighs. "It’s a daily concern. You’d hope that the great
progress made in recent years can be maintained but finances
have to be very carefully managed to do so while at the same time
we try to avail of so many development opportunities out there."
Interestingly, in the face of all challenges she draws inspiration
and strength from close quarters. "I can be very inspired by club
volunteers. They change people’s lives," she explains, "and put so
much back into their communities." Per example, she recalls a
neighbour who was both a mother a leader in a youth club of
which she was once a member. "She made our lives different and
better by her involvement," she says. Similarly at her Midleton
school "a voluntary coach got me involved in athletics, which
gave me so much enjoyment. Ordinary, selfless people can have
an amazing influence."
On a wider stage, she greatly admires "our two female presidents," aka Mary Robinson and Mary McAleese. "They reinvented the office and brought a sense of dynamism to it. In reaching
out to the community, they have extended the presidency to its
limits and made it relevant."
A sports fan in general, she was entranced in her London days by
Arsenal and its Irish contingent of Brady, Stapleton and O’Leary.
The admiration extends to the former Gunner, now Barcelona
player, Tierry Henry, whom she considers, "a fantastic opportunist." Her interests in reading and films suggest wider world
awareness, being "more into biographies and documentaries than
fiction." The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas -the story of a German
boy and his friendship with another boy on either side of a Polish
concentration camp fence- have captured her avid attention in
both genres.
Given that one cannot get a tune from a hurley (well, maybe in
Kilkenny ), her music interests are otherwise diverse. "Sharon
Shannon, Edith Piaff, jazz, REM ," she recites. A keen traveller
also, she recently visited Cuba where "the music was non-stop,
everywhere. It was brilliant. I had to see Cuba before it changes,
which it will", enthuses the woman who once taught English in
Portugal -although probably only because they didn’t have hurleys
with which to teach them camogie!
She seems a most appropriate president at a time when international travel and Gaelic games are becoming increasingly synonymous. On the one hand there is the season’s end reward to foreign
climes beloved of victorious GAA and, now, camogie sides. There
are the GAA’s mixed rules scraps with Australia, although camogie has yet to pick a fight with foreigners and more recently, for
some reason, a growing culture of Gaelic games in the far-flung
fields of Dubai. "Camogie is now part of the annual Gaelic games
tournament amongst ex-pats in Dubai," Joan informs. "There are
now camogie clubs in Australia, America and Europe. There’s a
new one just started in Paris actually," she adds. "Having lived
and played in London, I’m interested in he game’s overseas potential, People bring their sport with them when they emigrate." Joan
is equally aware of the international dimension at home, as the
upsurge of immigrants integrate across the country. It would be a
foolish and blinkered sports body that would not seek to harness
the talents and personalities of these new arrivals. Unsurprisingly,
the camogie leader with a history of immigrant assistance easily
recognises the potential. "There are opportunities to increase our
membership there, but besides that, I can see immigrants bringing
the game back to their families abroad too," she comments.
Finally -as every camogie player knows- there’s men! "Thirty
years ago men were effectively barred from involvement with
camogie!" Joan reveals. "Now there are men on camogie county
boards, refereeing, coaching, everything. The game is far more
representative of the community." It means much more than that
actually. It means that if matters proceed along these lines, Cork
might finally manage to beat Kilkenny in an All Ireland hurling
championship. We’ll send on the girls. Who needs Christy Cooney
when Cork has Joan O’Flynn?!

Midleton Educate Together
Enrolment Morning
The Midleton Educate Together National School is nearly one
year old! It has been a fantastic first year of existence. The school
has attracted many cultures to complement that of our Irish students. The school is proud that its multi-denominational ethos is a
success and the children are enjoying learning of all cultures and
religions. We celebrated many ’firsts’ this year. Our first Board of
Management was established, the Parents Association was elected. We were excited to see our first student to receive her first
’Holy Communion’ and the school went swimming for the first
time the school started it’s first extra curricular activities in the
form of its After Schools Club and also the First St Patrick’s Day
Parade for the school to be a part of ..the list goes on and on.
We are glad to have dispelled the biggest misconception that the
school revolves around the religious aspect of the curriculum. The
school embraces all religions and caters for all needs. We organised first communion and first confession lessons this year. The
School is also a National School; this means that the school is a
governmental sanctioned school - the national curriculum is
taught like all other national schools.
Saturday 13th of June between 10am and 12.30pm the school will
be hosting an enrolment morning. This will give parents an opportunity to enrol their children for September 2009 and also
September 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013. As the school accepts first
come first served enrolments there has been a lot of interest for the
coming years. We would suggest that you visit the school at the
Rugby Club on the 13th to enrol and any queries or questions can
be answered. Alternatively you can visit the schools web-site to
enrol at www.midletonet.com or ring the school at 021 4634563.
Our website is regularly updated so that you can keep up to date
with the exciting educational development that is Midleton
Educate Together National School.
On Monday the 29th of June the schools Parents Association has
organised another fantastic Quiz. Prizes include I-pods and a
Guess Hand Bag!! Wow!! This quiz is being held in Wallis Bar,
Main Street, Midleton. The ’Craic’ was mighty last year; make
sure you don’t miss it this time around.

Introduction to Eventing
Day in aid of
Stuart Mangan Fund
A great many people have heard of Stuart Mangan by now.
He’s the very talented young man from Fermoy who suffered a catastrophic injury while playing rugby, and now
needs huge amounts of medical care and attention just to
survive from day to day. The costs are huge, and with this
is mind, West Waterford Pony Club ran a fundraiser at Dick
and Marie Hennessy’s farm at Ballinscartha, Midleton in
April.
While rain threatened to call everything off, the cross country was run off in glorious sunshine in the afternoon. Pony
clubs from Waterford, Tipperary, Wexford, United
(Midleton), Muskerry and of course West Waterford were
represented. Eventing is in the news for the last few years it is quite a dangerous sport, and not to be taken lightly, as
the fences are very solid in the event of a fall.
It requires a lot of work and discipline, as there are three
parts to the day. Dressage is first, followed by a show jumping round, and then a cross country round. This day was
designed to give newcomers a good idea of what is required
- three sections were held, 2 for under 12’s and 1 for novice
riders over 12. There was a great turnout for the day, and the
standard of riding was very high. All got around safely, and
a great time was had by all as the fences were interesting,
but inviting!
A large number of volunteers made the day a success thanks
to Conor Cashman, Vet, Dr. Morehan, the ambulance crews,
Nicholas Kelly for the toilets, all the people who manned
fences and the excellent catering staff, along with scorers,
dressage judges, writers, and arena stewards. It’s a very
labour intensive day - building the fences took quite a lot of
hard work, a big thanks to Dick Hennessy and pony club
helpers for this.
When all the contributions were gathered a sum of 1,791
was presented to Geraldine Canning, who is one of the
administrators of this fund, at a meeting in Tallow, with the
best wishes of the West Waterford Pony Club.
Start of the Race in Patrick Street.

Marathon Monday
Well done to all our athletes who took part in Monday s Bord Gais
Energy Cork City Marathon. Our club was well represented in
both the main event and in the relay event, with some of our runners experiencing the occasion for the first time. Due to print
deadlines on the Bank Holiday Weekend we are not in a position
to carry the results, but there now all available on the Cork City
Marathon website. We will have a reflection on the big race in our
next column two weeks hence.

Last Thursday saw the start of the Summer Series in Ballycotton
with plenty of evidence of Midleton s large club base on the start
line. Incredibly the entries exceeded 400 on what was a near perfect night for running. Despite the recording breaking numbers
(less than 300 ran last year) the efficient results service almost
defied belief. All 411 names and time on view by 9.30pm, not
much over an hour after the race began.
Our club probably set a new record for the number of runners who
actually ran in one of the races in the series open to correction
on this one, but we had a massive turn out of 51. Some such as
Noel O Regan, Kevin Morrison and Fergal O Meara were watching every step in advance Marathon Monday , others had a real
go off conquering the tough course. For the record here is the full
list of Midleton AC finishers on what was a historic evening.Noel
O Regan, Tom Cody, Donal Broderick, John Cashman, Neilius
Aherne, Kevin Cooney, Dan Horgan, Alan Kelly, Niall O Neill,
Michelle Nolan, Ann Geary, Sally Drennan, Ned Ramsell, Brian
Healy, Billy O Sullivan, Kevin O Reilly, Trevor Mahoney, Ken

Emer Casey Memorial
Earlier last week, the sun shone gloriously for the third running of
the Emer Casey memorial 10K race in Youghal. Congratulations
to Noel Regan, who warmed up for the marathon with a ninth
placed finish overall. Tom Cody and Neilius Aherne were also in
top form, both collecting category prizes.
In the ladies event, Michelle Nolan followed home Rhona Lynch
and Sonia O Sullivan to win third prize overall, recording an
excellent 39:39 process. Linda Geary was also to the forefront of
the ladies event clocking 40:24 to come home in fifth position.
More prizes galore followed in the age categories with Sally
Drennan topping the Over 40 s and Elaine Hennessy collecting
again as top lady Over 50. Meantime Joan McCarthy finished
third in the Over 50 s.
Fota Breaks Records
The mid week date in Fota Wild Life Park broke all recent records
as close on 700 turned up for the inaugural 4 mile race around this
novel venue. Our club had a huge turn out on the night, too many
to mention, but the participation level shows once again the
strength of Midleton AC. Congrats to all who picked up prizes on
the night. - A special word to Margaret Barry who made a successful return from injury ahead of schedule.
Well Done Denis
Denis Kelleher was on the road again last week, travelling to
Newry for the Half Marathon. Despite injury problems Denis has
followed his planned schedule very closely and again performed
very well.
What s Next?
After the marathon it s back to more modest distances over the
coming few
weeks. The Glanmire 5 mile race is on Wednesday next with the
option to take in the Clashmore event over the same distance on
the following Friday likely to attract a number of our runners from
East Cork. Then on Tuesday another record is set to be broken
when the 25th running of the John Buckley 5K takes place on the

Seniors defeat Sarsfields: After the disappointment of our narrow defeat to St. Finnbarrs last weekend our senior hurlers are
straight into there preparation for their second round tie against
Ballinhassig which is provisionally fixed for June 6th. On Friday
night last we hosted reigning county champions Sarsfields in the
senior hurling league. On an ideal night for hurling both teams
served up a good hour’s entertainment. Both sides were short several players and it was nip and tuck throughout. In the end the
Magpies won by 1-19 to 1-17.
Junior Hurling League 1: Our Division 1 Junior Hurlers travelled
to our neighbours Dungourney on Wednesday evening last for a
league game. It proved to be a disappointing exercise as we were
defeated on a scoreline of 1-12 to 1-09.
Fe 8 Fun Hurling Blitz: Saturday the 23rd of May saw Midleton’s
U8 hurlers in their outing of the year. The AIB sponsored fun blitz
consists of 4 teams, Midleton, Fr O’Neills, Killeagh and Youghal.
Fr O’Neills hosted the first blitz in Ballymacoda and are to be commended for their efforts. Midleton had two teams on the day Midleton Tigers and Midleton Sharks. In non score keeping
matches players in both of our teams got a chance to play in different positions throughout the matches. Both teams performed
well and showed high levels of skill and commitment. Keep up the
good work lads!
Fe 14 A Football League v Glanmire: We travelled to the Pike to
play Glanmire in the Fe 14 A Footabll League.
This was our first Football game in a while and we lost heavily to
a very determined home side.Team: Brian Rossiter, Ian Aher,
Eamonn Cleary, Billy O Shea, Sean O Farrell, Alan Stanton, Luke
Morrissey, Aaron Mc Evoy, Robert Williams, Padraic Nagle,
Eanna O Brien, Kevin Butler, Luke Dineen, John O Farrell, Liam

U9 Football League Game v Fermoy
Team 1
On Wednesday May 14th last we welcomed Fermoy to the CBS
grounds for an U9 Football league game. This was our 1st football outing of the season and with very little football training done
in advance of the game it was always going to be difficult to compete. The game consisted of 3 periods each of 15 minutes and both
teams lined out with a goalkeeper, 3 backs, 3 midfielders and 3 forwards. The rules only permitted 1 hop and 1 solo and the players
had to rotate their positions at the end of each period. This meant
that everyone had the opportunity to play in defence, midfield and
attack. As expected, Midleton were slow out of the blocks and
were immediately under pressure from a physically stronger
Fermoy side. Our defence were under relentless pressure and
coped admirably with our goalkeeper Fionn making some fine
saves. By the end of this period Fermoy had registered 1-3 and
Midleton had failed to score.
The 2nd period started in the same fashion but as the minutes
passed by it was noticeable that Midleton were beginning to get a
foothold in the game. We eventually got on the score board when
Eabhan kicked a fine point from a free. However, Fermoy had
already registered a couple of goals to put the game beyond us.
The 3rd period was without a doubt our best. Alan played well in
goal and his kick outs regularly found a team mate. Fionn, Fergus
and Eabhan were resolute in defence, David, Kian and Lee held
their own in midfield and with a regular supply of ball Eric, Jake
and Omar began to cause problems for the Fermoy defence. The
improvement in play all around the field resulted in Jake kicking 2
goals before the final whistle. Team David Scanlon, Fionn
O’Connell, Kian Farmer, Eabhan de Barra, Jake Shanahan, Alan
Power, Lee Parker, Eric Duggan, Omar Raouf Moussaoui, Fergus
Wade
U9 Football League Game v Fermoy
Team 2
The Second Team of Coleman Quinn, Jake Waterman, Christian
Murphy, Mark Daly, Cathal Morrissey, Griffin Hurley, Ronan
Lynch, Ryan O Riordan, Ciar n Evans, Cormac O’brien. We were
slow to start the game and Fermoy took full advantage of this to
take an early lead with our goalkeeper under pressure for the first
15 minutes. In the second Period we started playing better with all
player contributing and we started to get some scores on the board
and we started to work as team and we match Fermoy score for
score in this period. The 3rd period was our best and we out scored
Fermoy but the damage was done in the first period all the boys
tried hard and we progressed as a team the longer the game went
with some fine link play between the players.
Overall, this was a fine performance from our lads who battled all
the way to the finish. The slow start was understandable, but once
the cobwebs were blown away we were well in the game.
We wish Michael Barry a speedy Recovery from his appendix
operation.
U12D Footballers : We played Killeagh in the Championship
Semi Final on Wednesday May 13th. Following an indifferent
league campaign where we lost heavily to Glanmire & Killeagh,
were narrowly defeated by Aghada and beat Russell Rovers we
were under further pressure on the night when we travelled with a
depleted squad of just 18 containing only 2 players at the age and
the rest made up of U-11’s & U-10’s.
However the lads gave a determined and committed display with
both "elder statesmen" on the night - Cian McInerney & Jack
Delaney leading the way which saw us clinch victory by a single
point thanks to a late score from "super sub" PJ Fitzgearld. This
was a great result and showed how much the lad’s have improved
since the league and also what can be achieved when all players
work hard for each other for the full game as to a man all players
used gave every effort with the defending at times especially in the
second half being top class from our goalkeeper and 6 backs as a
unit. We now await a finalist from the other side of the draw which
will be one of Aghada, Glanmire or Russell Rovers before a date
can be set for the final..
Panel on the night was Cian McInerney (Capt), Jack Delaney,
Ryan O’Reagan, Conor O’Neill, Ryan McConville, Adam Daly,
Kevin Daly, Conor Evans, Ross O’Connor, David Mulcahy, Conor
Meade, Shane O’Brien, Temitayo Abdullah, PJ Fitz Gerald, Sean
O’Meara, Christopher Power, Eoin Moloney and Sean O’Leary.
Other players to have played in our league campaign have been Andrew McMahon, Christopher Shanahan, Darnel Laffan, Dylan
Cahalane, Jack Mehmet, Jordan Roche, Muris Moloney, Padraig O
Brien, Ross Cummins, Thomas Desmond and Killian Brown.
Congrats to Midleton CBS who recently won the Cork Colleges
U14 Hurling and to Midleton College who recently participated
for the first time in the Lord Mayor Cup Hurling competition held
in Pairc Ui Rinn recently.

Castlemartyr crash out of
Football Championship
CASTLEMARTYR...................0-10
LISGOOLD.............................1-9
Castlemartyr’s bid to reach the semi-finals of the East Cork Junior
football championship was thwarted by an eager and skilful
Lisgoold side in Killeagh last Friday night the 22nd of May.
An atrocious start for the Reds in which they found themselves 15 to 0-1 in arrears after only 20minutes proved to be their main
downfall, and although they rallied subsequently, they could never
get the crucial score when it mattered most to reach parity.
The Lisgoold men got off to a dream start when they found the
back of the Reds net inside the first minute of play. A high lobbing
ball into the square was not dealt with by the Castlemartyr rearguard and was fisted to the net by the Lisgoold full forward. The
story could have been worse a minute later when a second goal
seemed likely but MJ Cremin was alert to the task and brought off
a fine save. It was all Lisgoold at this stage and Castlemartyr could
not get a hand on the ball. Wave after wave of attack came at the
Castlemartyr Defence and 5 more points ensued by the 20th
minute, Castlemartyr’s only response being a Maurice Hodnett
free.
There was no way Lisgoold could keep this pace up though, and
between here and half time the Reds, without ever hitting top gear
eased themselves back into contention with four unanswered
points from the boot of Jimmy Smiddy (three from frees), to leave
only a goal between the sides 1-5 to 0-5.
Brian Lawton pointed on the resumption to narrow the gap further,
but MJ Cremin was called on soon after to pull off another spectacular save to keep the Reds in it. Castlemartyr spurned goal
chances of their own also, which could have tilted the game in
their favour but the Lisgoold rearguard were able for the task.
Points from Maurice, Eddie Clifford and a belter from Evan O
Keeffe were the highlights of the second half for the Reds, and yet
another fine Cremin save when he foiled Lisgoold touching over
for a point.
By the 56th minute Brian Lawton reduced the margin to the bare
minimum, and the Reds swarmed forward in search of an equaliser, but try as they might the ball wouldn’t go over the bar and the
Lisgoold men hung on, and deservedly marched on to the semi’s.

Lisgoold Ladies Football
Under 10’s secure hard fought draw
Under 10 ; Lisgoold 0 - 0
Ballinacurra 0 - 0
Our U10 girls played their second league match on Saturday
23rd May away to Ballinacurra. Once again a great game of
football was displayed by both teams who were very evenly
matched. Our half back line of Aoibhe Savage, Fiona Murphy
and Grace O’Driscoll marked the Ballinacurra forward line
very tightly and prevented them from scoring.
Midfielders Niamh Power and Sinead O’Brien worked very
hard at supplying the forwards with the ball but the
Ballinacurra backs were solid and scores were very hard to
come by. Forwards Ellen Flynn, Alanna Russell and Orla
Fleming tried valiantly to get the elusive scores. Playing
against the wind in the second half the Lisgoold back line were
under tremendous pressure from Ballinacurra.
Captain Sarah Kelleher moved to midfield and both herself and
Sinead O’Brien did trojan work to prevent any scores. Our
goalie, Britney Devine gave a brilliant display and stopped four
chances from the Ballinacurra forwards to ensure that the
scoreline remained nil all at the final whistle. Well done to all
the players.
Team: Britney Devine, Rachel McCann, Sarah Kelleher

Lisgoold supporters made the short journey across the county
boundary to Dungarvan in great numbers in support of the
County Senior footballers in their easy win in the first round of
the Munster Senior Football Championship last Sunday, but
also to see our Club heroine Caoilin Hickey proudly wear the
red and white jersey of Cork in "The Primary Game".
Caoilin played a key role in Corks tremendous victory over
Waterford, and everyone in Lisgoold Leamlara Ladies Football
Club proudly salutes the fantastic achievement of Caoilin . We
hope to see many of the young players in the club follow
Caoilin’s footsteps in proudly representing the County in future

Rugby Star’s mother urges
Lions fans to do their bit for
South African families
The mother of Heineken Cup winning Leinster Captain Leo
Cullen has urged Lions fans travelling to South Africa to take one
day out from their holiday to help build homes for destitute families.
Longstanding volunteer with the Niall Mellon Township Trust,
Paula Cullen said the lives of poverty-stricken locals could be
transformed by the influx of supporters who are following their
team on the Lions tour. She said: "I wish the players all the best
out there and the fans that go to support them too. As a country
it’s a fascinating place. The reality of life there for many people is
shocking. There are millions of people in South Africa living in
shacks, without access to sanitation, electricity and water. With so
many Irish and British fans arriving this month to watch the
games, there’s a chance for them to make a difference. I really
hope some of them do their bit to change things for the better.
Paula spoke out as her son s Leinster teammates Brian O’Driscoll,
Jamie Heaslip, Rob Kearney and Luke Fitzgerald landed in
Johannesburg ahead of the Lions’ campaign. Paula, from Wicklow
has visited South Africa on three occasions as a volunteer for the
Niall Mellon Township Trust. The Irish charity which was founded in 2002 has built more than 11,000 homes for families living in
shacks and is recruiting rugby fans to volunteer to take one day out
to build homes during their trip to South Africa.
Mrs. Cullen added: "The charity urgently needs help to build houses and this is an opportunity for travelling Lions supporters to
meet and work with local people in a township to see how they
live their daily lives and make a difference while on tour. Imagine
coming home from your trip to South Africa knowing that you
were part of a group that helped move a family out of a shack and
into a house? Something that will change these families lives forever."
Niall Mellon Township Trust are looking to recruit hundreds of
supporters to help them build houses for one-day building blitzes
at townships in Pretoria, Johannesburg or Cape Town from 1st
June to 4th July. Director of Operations for the charity, Dominic
Loughran said: "Volunteers will get to experience township life for
one day and see first-hand what life is like for families living in
shacks. These families are living in damp, cramped and cold conditions in winter and unbearable heat during the summer. It would
be truly inspirational if we could get as many of the Lions supporters as possible to participate."
Anyone who is travelling to South Africa and is interested in volunteering for the charity should call Jimmy Fearon on +353 1
4948200.
The Trust will collect volunteers from a central location, provide
them with lunch and bring them back at the end of the day.

PADDY O’DOHERTY MEMORIAL HURLING FINALS PROVIDE
GREAT ACTION IN CASTLEMARTYR GAA PITCH
The sun shone gloriously on Friday evening last as the curtain came down
on the Paddy O Doherty Memorial Hurling Tournament at Castlemartyr
GAA Grounds.
Held on an annual basis in memory of the club s most dedicated ever servants this under 8 event brought together over 30 players from the Kiltha
Og Club.
Group matches took place throughout the month of May and thus there
was great anticipation as the large gathering assembled to see the stars of
the future in action on finals night.
In the Plate Final, Clare overcame Limerick by 1-2 to 0-2, with Ronan
Hayes contributing all the winners scores whilst Jack McGann hit both
points for Waterford in what was a thrilling half hour of hurling in this
eight-a-side competition.
Delight for Ronan Hayes as her receives the Plate Trophy from Winnie O’Doherty
at the conclsuion of last week’s finals organised by Kiltha Og GAA Club and sponsored by O’Donovan Transport.

The Cup Final served up another close contest. Goals by Peter Fleming,
Eoghan Martin and Niall Morgan proved the decisive scores in
Waterford s 3-0 to 1-0 triumph over Cork, for whom Robert Cahill raised
the green flag.
Both games were of a high standard with honesty of effort, great dedication and some superb hurling skills being displayed by all the players who
deserve warm words of congratulations for their performances over the
last four weeks of the tournament.
Winnie O Doherty, along with her daughter Mairead and grand children
Lucy and Amy were on hand to make the presentations to all teams at the
end of a great night of sporting entertainment. Compliments to supreme
organiser Jim Sweeney (under 8 manager) and his team for co-ordinating
the tournament, to sponsors O Donovan Transport and to match referee
Itsey Hayes for his efficient handling of both finals.

Road to selection:
Earlier this year a number of training days were arranged around
the country under the watchful eye of Ian Fearon, National High
Performance Trainer. These culminated in a special training event
at Kill International Equestrian Centre, in
Kildare. Following this, prospective competitors came to Louth
County Show where they jumped 1.20 meter classes as part of a
"viewing" event. This was then followed by the riders competing
in 1.20M and 1.30 M Grand Prix competitions at Cavan Equestrian
Centre earlier this month.
On the week-end of May 15 -17th a short list of riders and horses
headed for Barnadown Equestrian Centre, Gorey, Co. Wexford,
where they jumped a competitive selection process to mirror the
European Championships; 1 round speed class Friday, Nations
Cup style 2 round class Saturday and finally a Grand Prix style
class on Sunday. Competition was intense with combinations
vying for the five places on offer. After 5 rounds of competition the
team above was named.
Road to Moorsele:
From here the team will hold several closed training events, travel
to several competitive shows, possibly in the UK as well as at
home, before traveling to Belgium to take on the other European
countries in what promises to be a very enjoyable and experiencing building event.
In 2007 the Irish team of Jack Dodd, Jordan Coyle, Michael Duffy
and Jack Doyle Jnr., traveled to the same championships, at
Istanbul, Turkey, and came home with Silver medals. Let’s hope
this year’s team can go one better!

Junior Hurling:
The hurlers had a couple of good wins in the last week away to
Cobh and at home to Killeagh. In the Cobh match on the
Monday we played against the wind in the first half and managed to contain the Cobh attacks comfortably enough with only
a point in it at the break. In the second half we began to assert
our authority on the game and eventually went into the lead.
Despite Cobh putting it up to us for periods in the second half
we ran out eventual winners on a scoreline of 1-14 to 0-15 to
take the spoils. Damian Daly in particular had an excellent game
scoring 1-09 but he was ably assisted by Trevor Costigan and
Brian Sigerson.
We played Killeagh on Friday evening in another league game.
This too was a tight game with some good passages of play from
both sides throughout. It was tit-for-tat in the first half and again
there was just a point in at the short whistle.
With the winds at our backs in the second half we started to get
the ball in more quickly to the forwards and they duly responded with some well taken scores. Noddy O’Brien was the main
thorn in the side for Killeagh notching 2-02.
Trevor Costigan again got through mountains of work in the
midfield and when Killeagh put it up to the backs in the latter
part of the game they stood firm with Mark O’Sullivan saving
well to prevent a green flag before the end. Final scoreline 2-13
to 2-09.
Next league game up at home to Carrigtwohill on Saturday 30th
time TBC. Training this week on Monday & Wednesday from
6.45pm.
Ladies GAA Club:
CONGRATS to the U12 camogie team who had a fantastic week
this week qualifying for their first ever County quarter final.
They have managed to go unbeaten throughout their campaign
in East Cork securing six wins and a draw to date. They played
Cobh on Wednesday night in a tough encounter but managed to
secure the win by the narrowest of margins and on Sunday last
played out a draw in a thriller with Carrigtwohill.
The game was a credit to both teams who served up great entertainment throughout in a ding-dong battle. Chloe Sigerson score
a point with virtually the last puck of the game to secure the
draw that was probably a fair result in the end. The girls playing
in the green and white of Ballinacurra should feel proud of their
efforts to date.
Next game up this week is an U12 football match away to Inch
Rovers on Tuesday 26th. For further details contact Steve Kane
on 086-8368600.
Juvenile Club:
There is an U8 hurling blitz at the field on the Geragh Rd next
Saturday 30th May starting at 2pm. Teams from Castlelyons,
Lisgoold and Bride Rovers will be taking part. Come and support the Ballinacurra boys on what hopefully will be a sunny
bank holiday Saturday afternoon. Further details from Richie
Keohane on 087-2817092.

Russell Rovers 2-7 Lisgoold 0-2
Three weeks ago Rovers got out of jail with an equalising point in
the dying seconds of the game but this time we made no mistake
when we had 11 points to spare over Lisgoold in the replay of the
first round of the East Cork Junior B football championship,
played in Shanagarry last Wednesday evening.
The opening exchanges were tough and uncompromising resulting
in a dour struggle for supremacy with neither side giving an inch.
While both sides created a number of scoring chances, they could
only muster a point apiece in this half, partly due to wayward
shooting but also due to very tight marking by both sets of backs.
Daniel Moynihan opened our account in the first minute following
which neither side managed to register another score until
Lisgoold equalised in the 31st minute.
After the interval Rovers took control of the game and began to
play the type of football we know they are capable of. Scoringwise, this half belonged to the Hartnett brothers who notched up 26 between them, Barry 1-4 and Brian 1-2. The first goal came in
the 15th minute when a mistake in the Lisgoold defence saw the
ball run loose and Brian Hartnett was in like a flash to boot it into
the left corner of the net. Four minutes later Paudie Higgins who
worked hard throughout the game, set up Barry Hartnett with a
sublime pass and he made no mistake from about 12 metres out to
put daylight between the sides. Barry followed up with two sweetly struck points before Lisgoold got their only score of this half, a
point in the 30th minute. Our settled defence played well as a unit
and mopped up everything that came their way while Colin
Crowley and John Paul Ivers worked their socks at midfield with
Colin’s majestic fielding a notable feature of the evening. Also,
Tadgh Crowley and particularly Mikie Walsh made telling contributions when introduced as subs. As in our previous game, all of
Rovers scores came from open play. All in all, this was a good
week’s work with the East Cork County B title captured the previous Sunday - well done to all concerned.

Autocross Event Preview
Round 2 of our motorsport calendar kicks off again on June 13th
and 14th next when we host a round of the National Autocross
Championship. The venue for this will once again be held near
Ballymacoda village. Following on from the success of this event
last year, a very good entry is envisaged once again when both the
specials and the rally cars will be battling it out for supremacy over
the two days. Plans for the event are already at an advanced stage
with all the relevant officials in place led by C.O.C Jamie
McCarthy. The event will kick off on the Saturday with scrutiny
at 1pm followed by practice at 1.30pm and the first time run scheduled for 2.00pm. On Sunday scrutiny will be at the earlier time of
12 noon with practice at 12.30pm and the first of the time runs
scheduled for 1pm. We would encourage and welcome as many
competitors as possible who hold the relevant competition license
to start working on your cars now and be ready to head to
Ballymac on what promises to be a very enjoyable weekend of
motorsport on a challenging grass surface. Clear blue skies and
blazing sunshine were the order of the day last year and we hope
for the same this time around. Regulations can now be downloaded on our brand new website www.imokillymotorclub.com or
by contacting Jamie on 086/3752543 or entries secretary Derek
Power on 087/8128195.
IRISH IN TOP THREE OF THE
MOANING LEAGUE…
It s official, the Irish have been named among the top moaners in
Europe only the Brits moan more than us.
Irish people spend on average 9 hours 28 minutes moaning each
week that is more than 20 days in any given year. The average
Irish person whines about something four times a day, for almost
22 minutes each time.Bad weather topped their list of daily groans,
followed by feeling tired. Traffic and our daily workload took the
third and fourth place in the gripe charts.
Irish people generally have a reputation for being happy-go-lucky,
but this Europe-wide survey put Ireland in second place in terms
of the top moaning countries. With it raining here on average every
second day, it is no wonder that bad weather came out top of the
list of moans .
The European-wide research revealed that those living in France
moan for just five hours and 46 minutes a week, with the traffic
and expensive train service the most popular subjects to complain
about. The Germans came third, whinging about the busy roads for
an average of almost five and a half hours a week.
And while 61 per cent of Irish people complain because they really are annoyed, 11 per cent admitted they do it simply because they
enjoy it. One in three even admitted to moaning about something
just to get a conversation started. Just under 70 per cent also reckon they whine more than normal if the weather is bad.
Although there are other countries in Europe with similar weather
to Ireland and the UK, it seems it affects the Irish and the Brits the
most .
A majority of both men and women agree that women are more
likely to moan than men (59 percent).
On the basis of our position in the moaning charts, it looks like
Joe Duffy s programme will be in business for a long time to
come
, concluded Uniroyal Tyres.

Greg Shinnors have won the first two rounds of the British Rally

with a puncture early on.The last time an Irish man won the British

William Walsh / Ed O Neill in the Corolla Twincam were right on

GERMAN MAN BLOWS THOUSANDS ON
TEST DRIVE
A German man has lost around £20,000 in cash after the money
blew out of an Audi A3 Cabriolet he was test driving. The man,
who has not been named, arrived at an Audi dealer near Hannover
with his money ready to buy the car. But he decided to take one
last test drive, leaving the envelope containing it on the back
seat.German police were forced to close the autobahn after the
man’s money scattered everywhere. Locals are now being warned
not to go scavenging on the road, after just £2500 of the total was
recovered in the subsequent search. To make matters worse for the
unfortunate German man, police are considering charging him for
their time and the inconvenience. He didn’t buy his new Audi,
either.

FORD MARKS 10 YEARS OF FOCUS WITH
ULTRA-LOW CO2 SPECIAL EDITION
New Diesel Entrant in Lowest Tax Band Brings in Savings
Celebrating 10 years of unprecedented success in Ireland, with
sales of almost 90,000 units, Ford s Focus is now being introduced
in an ultra-low CO2 version to take advantage of the tax savings
for low-emission cars. The new 5-door Focus Style Special
Edition features air conditioning, 16 alloy wheels and front fogs,
all for just 20,715*.
The Ford Focus has been Ireland s best-selling car for eight of the
past ten years, clocking up total sales of 89,566. Twice voted
Semperit Irish Car of the Year by the Irish Motoring Writers
Association, and a former European Car of the Year, its unique
blend of driveability, practicality, dependability, low cost of ownership and style has seen it attract an extraordinarily wide range of
customers.
From young motorsports fans to families to empty nesters, the
Focus customer base has always been a broad church. It s that
very breadth of appeal that has made it a perennial favourite
among Irish motorists.
If placed bumper to bumper, the Focus cars sold to date in the
country would stretch from Dublin to Limerick and back.
The new Focus Style Special Edition is powered by a 1.6 diesel
Duratorq powertrain delivering 90PS and generating only
118g/km of CO2. Correspondingly, fuel economy is outstanding
at just 4.5l/100km.
By managing to bring this car inside the lowest VRT band, Ford
engineers have delivered an effective saving of over 2,000 on the
previous equivalent model, . Road tax is reduced to just 104 per
year.
In real terms, the entry level 5-door Focus back in 1999 cost over
24,000 in today s money, and lacked standard features of the
Special Edition such as ESP, ABS, four additional airbags, collaps-
ing pedal box, air conditioning, CD stereo with auxiliary input,
front fogs, quick clear windscreen, alloy wheels, colour coded
bumpers and mirrors and central locking.
ARE WE THERE YET? - STUDY REVEALS FORMULA FOR GREAT DAY OUT
Parents wanting a stress-free day out with the kids should leave
home at 8.37am and travel no more than 83 km these are the
findings of a recent expert study into what makes a great day
out . Researchers found the ideal day out will also require around
six and a half hours at the beach or the zoo with the children taking part in at least three different activities. The temperature during
the day should be a balmy 20”C and a party of two adults and two
children around the age of eight will also ensure the day is enjoyable. It also emerged that the family will spend 6.10 on souvenirs
such as a novelty pen, t-shirt or cuddly toy and should return home
at 5.50pm.
In Ireland, we embark on millions of family days out a year and
spend millions in the process so it makes sense to consider how to
make a success of every trip we plan. In trying to have the best
time possible the choices we make about what time to leave, the
stops we make and the activities at our destination will all influence the outcome of the day.
One ice-cream each for the children and a total cost of no more
than 65 as well as a total time for snack breaks of 47 minutes
completed the criteria.
More than four in ten (41 per cent) said the ideal car for a great day
out would be a family hatchback, with nearly half (47 per cent)
favouring pop music as their in-car sounds.
Fruit pastilles were hailed as the ideal treat for the journey, followed by mints and hard-boiled sweets.
The majority (56 per cent) of respondents opted for taking snacks
to munch on and bought other food at their destination while a
third (32 per cent) packed everything they would eat and drink for
the day. On average families have six days out together every year
and children quiz parents with: Are we there yet?’ after just 28
minutes of being in the car.
