LISGOOLD GAA
Lisgoold Vs. Rockban - 3rd September.
After a summer break, we were back in action playing on a home
venue. This match was hard fought and the referee, Ian O'Brien,
was an inspiration guiding the girls, instilling discipline and
explaining the rules, both mentors appreciated and applauded his
refereeing method. Rockban won this match, however, the
Lisgoold girls once again gave a great perforamance to their credit.
Lisgoold Vs. Fermoy. 17th September, 20010.
The Lisgoold girls again were in good form but beaten on the night
by a much stronger team. A huge thank you for the great support
given to the players by their families and friends. The girls enjoyed
the match even if the outcome was not what they wanted.
Lisgoold Vs. Glanmire 30th September, 2010
The rain thankfully held off for this match in Glanmire pitch. The
Lisgoold girls showed great character in their concentration for the
full match, in their discipline and skill levels. The team is improving all the time however, Glanmire was the winner on the night,
with an up to the age team.

Lisgoold U12 Team
Congratulations Lorraine!!
Many congratulations goes to our U12 player Lorraine O'Driscoll
who recently became East Cork U12 Ladies Road Bowling
Champion. And on Sunday 12th September last in Clashmore near
Waterford, Lorraine added another medal to her collection when she
was a member of the East Cork U12 Ladies Road Bowling Team
who won the All-Ireland title. Lorraine threw the final bowl to capture the title for the East Cork Team. Well done to her and the other
members of the team for bringing another All-Ireland title to Cork.
Lorraine will be endeavouring to achieve further success when our
U12 girls line out in the East Cork Championship Final against
Ballinacurra on Saturday 2nd October next. The match will be
played in Lisgoold pitch and throw in is at 11am. We wish the girls
and their trainers the very best of luck.
Lisgoold U12 Team Lisgoold Team: Stephanie O'Driscoll, Sarah
Kelleher, Fiona Murphy, Rachel McCann, Aoibhe Savage, Lorraine
O'Driscoll, Grace O'Driscoll, Niamh Power, Donna McCann,
Sinead O'Brien, Siomha Walsh, Orla Fleming, Laura Whelan, Ellen
Flynn (Capt.) Britney Devine, Katie O'Mahony, Caitlin O'Brien,
Sarah Murphy, Nicole O'Keeffe.
Our U12 girls played Aghada A in the semi-final of the East Cork
Plate Competition on Wednesday 8th September in Rostellan. This
was a competition set up by the East Cork Board for girls/Clubs
who did not qualify to play or play in the U12 County Competition.
It was a perfect evening for a game of ladies football and Lisgoold
got off to a great start with a brilliantly taken point from centre forward, Siomha Walsh. Niamh Power floated a well taken free into
the small square and Captain on the night, Ellen Flynn was on hand
to smash the ball into the back of the net. Once again Siomha Walsh
followed this up with another point. It was after this that Aghada
breached the Lisgoold defence and got their first score of the match.
Our backs tightened up where Aoibhe Savage, Sarah Kelleher and
Grace O'Driscoll did their utmost to prevent further scores. At the
other end of the pitch Sinead O'Brien surged forward and added
another point to Lisgoold's tally. Aghada added a further three
scores and Donna McCann finished Lisgoold's first half scoring
with a well taken point leaving four points between the sides at half
time.
On the restart Aghada got into their stride and despite gallant efforts
from our defence, they were not able to stem the attacks and in particular the scores from the Aghada full forward. Donna McCann
opened our second half scoring with a great point but unfortunately
the goals just didn't come for us. Siomha Walsh, who gave a great
display of football and was Lisgoold's player of the match, added
two more exceptionally taken points to our score. It just wasn't
Lisgoold's night despite the best efforts of our players. The Trainers
were very proud and heartened by the display of our team who
never gave up fighting up to the final whistle.
The players can hold their heads high on a great effort and we wish
them and their mentors the best of luck as they prepare for the upcoming East Cork Championship.
Congratulations to our Under 12 girls on winning the East Cork
Final on Saturday. Match report next week.
Under 14 - Lisgoold 4.08 Erins Own 0.04
It was into the Lions den on Saturday that our young girls ventured,
as we visited Erins Own home, pitch in Caherlag for their Under 12
Championship decider. A bright and crisp Autumn afternoon
would greet the large travelling Lisgoold contingent , and little did
we know that over an hour later the happy Lisgoold supporters
would celebrate not only the annexing of another Championship
trophy ,. but the warmth of a wonderful team performance . East
Cork Chairman, John Hickey had the honour of presenting the trophy to Lisgoold captain Caoilinn Hickey , and we wondered when
a Chairman ever had the proud honour of presenting the cup to his
daughter before . Caoilinn wears a most deserving skipper of a fantastic team performance , where each player played at and beyond
their previous personal bests . Whilst the famous Kerry side of previous years were proud of their Twin Towers, our attack was based
on more precision and style rather than sheer altitude ! Donna
McCann and Dayna Bradley simply pulverised the defense, and rattled score after score after score, each better than the last. One final
flowing move ended with Donna bashing the upright with such a
corker that the post is probably still shaking.
Up front assistance was provided by Ella O'Brien and Laura Walsh,
while Sarah O'Shea proved a wonderful link between midfield and
attack . The middle third was a bountiful location for Lisgoold
where Siomha Walsh was exquisite in everything she did, and she
proved a wonderful ally for the majestic Cara O'Brien, and later
Aoife Roche. Lorraine O'Driscoll (who was sadly forced off with
an injury) and cousin Stephanie O'Drioscoll were solid and dependable throughout, whilst the inside full back line were strong an
dependable where Aoife Healy , Kate Ruane and the brilliant
Danielle O'Keeffe saw off seven direct opponents without a score !
Wing back Jody Townend hunted and challenged throughout and
broke up attack after attack in an outstanding display. Keeper
Kelsey Devin was dependable and sound throughout and her accurate kick outs were the launching pad for many an attack .
Team captain Caoilinn Hickey was a magnet for the ball , her reading of the play simply majestic, and she well deserved the opportunity to lead this fantastic team to a well deserved Championship
victory.
UNDER 13 Our under 13 hurlers returned to action last Saturday
when we traveled to Ballygarvan to play 2 games in the All County
Under 13 Hurling competition. Our first game was against
Ballygarvan
and after an excellent game of hurling, Lisgoold came out in top
winning by 3 points.
In the second game, we proved to be much too strong for Brian
Dillons and won this game well. Overall it was an excellent team
performance and they go forward to play the next round on
Saturday, October 9th. Check locally for details of the venue. Best
of luck to this team next weekend.
Congratulations to the minors and their captain, Jamie Woods on
winning the East Cork Football Championship last Friday night
against Bride Rovers.
Many thanks to all who helped out and donated to our recent
Church Gate Collection - it was greatly appreciated.
Our local junior club have put forward plans for a new development
in the pitch consisting of new dressing rooms, meeting room etc.
The ladies football and Juvenile clubs have come on board with the
main club and have formed a fundraising committee to organise
events to raise funds for this development. It will be one of the
biggest the club has taken on board and we hope that there will be
support from those within and outside our parish.
Our annual joint social with the Juvenile Club will take place on 3rd
December, 2010 in the Midleton Park Hotel. Tickets will be on sale
shortly.

SO YOU WANNA THROW
A CHRISTMAS PARTY?
In the past, you've gone to Christmas parties only to sing off-key
Christmas carols and get drunk. But this year, instead of doing these
things in a corner by yourself, why not get some friends and family
together and host the event? That way, you can subtly point out to all
of your guests the many items that you need in your house that would
coincidentally make great Christmas gifts. So whether you want to
host an elaborate gala or a last-minute fiesta, this is the guide for you.
START PLANNING IN EARLY DECEMBER If possible, you
should start planning your party early; this is because - as we're sure
you've noticed - the month of December gets crazier and crazier as the
days go by. So it's a good idea to take care of all the big things first
(date, location, menu) and not worry about all the tiny details until a
couple of days before the big soiree. Here are some things you should
get done within the first two weeks of December: Make a guest list,
Send out invitations Plan a menu, Set a budget for food and decorations Send out invitations Once you've settled on who you're going
to invite, it's time to invite them. Start inviting people as soon as possible because your guests will probably be busy with their own holiday chores and will need a lot of notice. Here are some rules on proper party-inviting so that you don't commit some egregious faux pas
you didn't even know existed: Do all your inviting at once so that
nobody feels like he/she was invited as an afterthought or a replacement for another guest who couldn't make it. Either send out written
invitations on the same day or just pick up the phone (the method that
we prefer). If all your guests are technologically inclined (read: computer dorks), send out e-mail invitations through sendomatic.com or
evite.com. (But call anyone who doesn't respond within a week, just
in case).Invite everybody yourself (as opposed to asking someone to
pass the message along to others) so that everyone at the party feels
comfortable showing up. If it's OK for your guests to bring dates or
kids, indicate it on the invitations; otherwise ask your guests to alert
you in advance about anybody they're bringing.

HURLEY’S SUPERVALU, MIDLETON
IS CROWNED NATIONAL HYGIENE
& FOOD SAFETY WINNER
Local supermarket, Hurley’s SuperValu in Midleton have scooped
the National Winners Q Mark Award for Hygiene & Food Safety
at the 42nd National Q Mark Awards ceremony. The Awards were
presented at a fantastic ceremony in the Burlington Hotel Dublin,
on Friday evening, September 24th 2010.
To add to this outstanding achievement, Hurley’s SuperValu in
Midleton also claimed this year’s prestigious Q Mark Award for
Hygiene & Food Safety in the category of Supermarkets.
Hurley’s SuperValu has been serving the community of Midleton
for 40 years. The store was revamped in November 2009 and now
employs 130 people who serve 24,500 customers every week.
A spokesperson from Hurley’s SuperValu in Midleton enthused,
“We are absolutely thrilled with this fantastic win. This is the best
recognition we could ever hope to achieve and it’s all down to our
great team on the ground.”
The Annual Q Mark Awards ceremony celebrates the drive, commitment and achievements of all nominated companies and is the
highlight of the calendar year for companies who strive for quality and excellence.
Commenting at The Q Mark Awards, Irene Collins, MD, EIQA
(Excellence Ireland Quality Association) said: “It has been said
that if you are going to achieve excellence in big things, you
develop the habit in little matters! John and his team have developed a great attitude towards Hygiene and Food Safety and have
scooped the big one this year. Congratulations to John, Tommy
and all the team in Hurley’s.”
Another cause of excitement in the Burlington Hotel at this years’
Q Mark Awards was the presence of several TV camera crews that
were there to film not one, but two TV programmes. Blue Moon
Communications were on hand to televise The Q Mark Awards
ceremony and the new City Channel TV programme ‘Chefs
Challenge’, which sees six chefs from The Culinary Ability Team
in a dash to feed 600 hungry guests at The Q Mark Awards.
Camera crews vied for footage of TV stars and politicians whilst
presenters on the show Carol Anne Lowe and Mick Nolan of Fair
City fame (Francesca and Ray) were on hand to field interviews.
The National Q Mark Awards have grown in strength each year
with over 600 people from all over Ireland attending this years Q
Mark Awards ceremony, which celebrate The Q Mark, the recognised symbol of quality and excellence for businesses and consumers.
The 2010 Q Mark Awards ceremony was an even bigger success
than in previous years as it saw the introduction of new award categories for The Q Mark for Hygiene & Food Safety: Processor &
Producer, Dairy & Poultry and Meat Processors. These new categories will continue to focus on ensuring that the best quality and
excellence prevails for the consumer. And that is really something
to celebrate!

Cantemus performs Fleischmann
Cantemus Chamber Choir will perform Fleischmann's 'Planting
Stick' (with chamber orchestra) in Midleton this month as its contribution to the celebration of the Fleischmann Centenary. Aloys
Fleischmann's achievements for music in Ireland through most of
the twentieth century are legendary, and he has left Ireland a rich
legacy that will endure through the current century.
Bata na bBlandála was composed as a Choral Dance Suite for the
1957 Cork Choral Festival. The work will be performed in
Midleton without the dance element, as this performance is not
part of the pageantry of a large international festival, but rather an
opportunity to focus on the actual music. The chamber orchestra
for the occasion will be led by Cork violinist Eithne Willis.
In the second half of the programme - which will be rather longer
than the first, the choir performs without orchestra - many of the
chosen choral works are in fact a capella. This part of the concert
features music by Mäntyjärvi, Orbán, Ó Riada and others, as well
as music of a much lighter nature. No matter what your musical
taste, this programme cannot fail to please. The concert takes
place on Sat. 16 October at St. John the Baptist Church, Midleton
starting at 8 p.m. Tickets €15. (Concessions €10) www.cantemus.ie

Our season is up and running and we are delighted wit the
response to our invitiation to come along to the GAA Club on our
club nights each Tuesday and Thursday night at 8pm. We have 39
members registered with the I.I.B.A. and as a result we have
entered 3 teams in the league which is sponsored by O'Briens
Garage Midleton, Mazda and Suzuki Dealers.
Our league campaign kicked off last Thursday with a game against
Garryduff and in a very exciting game we had to give way to a
very experienced side from the city. We have games against
Ballincollig and Conna for our other teams.
The County Championships commence in St Anthony's Hall next
weekend and we wish the best of luck to our members taking part
in all the competitions.
Well done to Kay and Marie who qualified for the quarter final in

IMOKILLY TO CONTEST COUNTY SENIOR CAMOGIE FINAL
AGAINST INNISCARRA THIS WEEKEND
The Imokilly Camogie Team pictured prior to their Semi-Final victory over Ballincollig
IMOKILLY TAKE ON INNISCARRA IN
COUNTY CAMOGIE FINAL
By Mary Newman, Camogie Board P.R.O
This weekends’ county senior camogie final brings together division side Imokilly and Inniscarra in a final where the club side will
be battling to take the Punch Trophy to mid Cork for the first time
in their clubs history. It will be a third final appearance for the
Inniscarra girls, in 2003 they lost out to Fr O' Neills and they were
back again in 2005 when the lost out to fellow divisional neighbours Cloughduv.
Imokilly contested the final in 2006 when they lost out to St
Finbarr's and previous to this they tasted success way back in 1976
when the division completed five in a row of senior county championship successes, prior to this they contested the decider in 1996
when the lost out in a thrilling final to Glen Rovers, fourteen years
on the player of the match from that final Mary O' Connor still
lines out at the heart of the divisional sides defence turning in performances as good as ever.
From early in the season these two have looked likely final contestants and one could not argue with that prediction as both sides
possess plenty of talent performers who have played crucial roles
in their paths to the final.
Inniscarra have yet to engrave their name on the counties most
prestigious competition and they make no secret of their desire to
do so, losing out to Fr O Neills in 2003 a lot was expected of them
in 2005 when they met Cloughduv but it never happened for them.
This season they signaled their intentions early with a power
packed first round display as they defeated St. Finbarr's before Imokilly Coach Frank Flannery looks on from the sideline during
going on to record a quarter final win over Cloughduv. First day their Semi-Final victory
out their semi-final meeting with Douglas finished level thanks to
late point from Niamh Dilworth and they had to show nerves of
steel to fashion out a one point victory in the replay where it finished 0-9 to 0-8 in their favour.
Imokilly are a strong side backboned by players from Senior B
club Killeagh who have already booked their place in the B
decider, Mary O Connor and Angela Walsh are joined by
Sarsfields Emer O' Farrell, Watergrashill Marie O' Neill, Shonagh
Cunningham Youghal and Gearoidine Kearney Fr O' Neills. They
came through the divisional side of the draw before going on to
defeat champions St. Catherines; they had to be at their best to hold
of the challenge posed by Ballincollig first day out before going on
win the replay with a goal to spare.
The potential to win the title is in both camps, both have performed
well to date and come through out of close corners and are now
determined to claim the prize on offer and it promises to be a
cracking final.

BACK CUP TO EAST
Action from Imokilly’s Semi-Final victory over Ballincollig
By John Cashman
Imokilly will be aiming to bridge a 36 year gap when they contest
this weekend's county senior decider against Inniscarra. Like their
opponents they have twice been to finals in recent years and on
both occasions have returned empty handed.
Imokilly team manager Emmet Fennell says winning the final
would cap a great year for camogie in the division. Youghal and
Killeagh have already sprung to prominence and hopefully our
team can produce their best this weekend and capture the title.
Emmett has been encouraged by last week's semi final replay win
over Ballincollig.
Imokilly supporters look on with bated breath
"I think the team showed great character in the replay. In the
drawn match we were blown away at times by the intensity of the
opposition, but we learned from that and greatly improved in that
area. As a result we will go into the final in confident mood"
Emmet is joined on the side line by Mags Finn, Frank Flannery
and Don Ryan, all four realise that the county final will be another big test for their team.
"Inniscarra are a very good honest team. They too will also have
taken a lot of positives from their replay win on Sunday. However,
were are really looking forward to the occasion and are hopeful of
bringing back silverware to this traditional strong- hold in the east.

CSL UMBRO 12 DIVISION 5 MIDLETON 'A' 1 V CORKBEG 2
CHURCHTOWN SOUTH WALK
IN AID OF DOWN SYNDROME
Midleton ‘A’ lose tight game to Corkbeg
Midleton ‘A’ lost this game in the last two minutes after a pulsating tussle between two well matched teams.
Without doubt Midleton ‘A’ where the better footballers and only
succumbed to the long ball game favoured by Corkbeg after their
legs got tired. In the opening minutes there was nothing in the
game until Corkbeg floated a high ball into the box and it beat
everyone to fall into the net. Midleton ‘A’ did not lose spirit and
worked hard to get back into the game.
In the middle of the park Conor Meade and Patrick Horgan controlled the game and used the wings well to put pressure on
Corkbeg. However, the final pass from Midleton ‘A’ was missing
and the Corkbeg keeper had little to do in the first half.
At half time, Alan Swarbrick was brought on to slot into the right
of midfield and with Barry Kenneally asked to work on the right
of the front two, they linked up well and constantly put the
Corkbeg defence in trouble. After a series of good moves they won
a free kick on the right side about 30 yards out and just like the
Corkbeg goal, a high ball from Patrick Horgan into the box beat
the Keeper and Midleton ‘A’ were level.
Midleton ‘A’ dominated from here but were susceptible to the long
ball over the top and the high defence played by Midleton was at
risk. Conor Evans again played well in goal and cleaned up a number of speculative long balls. With the game nearing an end It
seemed it would finish a draw until Corkbeg broke through in the
last 2 minutes. With a strong run up the right flank the Midleton
‘A’ defence were out paced and a shot from the right of the goal 10
yards out slipped passed the outstretched hand of Conor Evans and
crept inside the far post for the winning goal. It was a blow to
Midleton ‘A’ who were the better team on the day but Corkbeg
deserved the congratulations for working hard right to the end.

Despite it taking place on the wettest Sunday of the summer, the
annual sponsored walk organised by Churchtown South
Community Council raised the figure of €2,232 for the Cork
Branch of Down Syndrome and a cheque for this amount was
recently presented to the organisation at a function in the local
hall.
The proceeds of the walk go to a different charity each year and
the event is also an enjoyable and social occasion, taking in the
scenic coastal route around the Old Road and Ballywilliam before
finishing back at the hall where tea and biscuits are served.
Despite the conditions, this year up to 40 adults and children from
the locality took part.
Olive Smiddy from Ballymacoda and her husband Billy, who are
parents of an eight-year-old boy, Damian, who has Down
Syndrome, received the cheque on behalf of the organisation.
"We are very familiar with all of the fund-raising and we are
delighted to receive this amount which will be used for the provision of speech therapy for over 120 children in the Cork region,"
said Olive.
"The Cork Branch have employed two speech therapists as the
HSE doesn't actually supply much in the way of this service and
therefore the children are being left behind. The parents themselves have decided to start a campaign of fundraising for this
service which we hope to expand in the future," she added.
Saturday October 30th is a big date for the Cork Branch of Down
Syndrome when they hold the inaugural Autumn Ball in Silver
Springs Hotel. George Hook will be the guest speaker and they
hope to sell 40 tables at €1,000 a table. Anyone looking for tickets or have a query can contact Jackie O'Connell on 087-0976035.

Junior B Hurling semi-final
The Hurlers travel to Carrigtwohill this Wednesday evening 6th
October at 7.30pm to take on Midleton in the semi-final of the
Junior B Championship. It's over six weeks since that great victory over St Catherines in the quarter-final so the lads are sure to be
raring to go. The management team of Martin Walsh, Colin
Richards and John Power have put in a huge amount of effort to
get the team primed for this one. No doubt this is a mammoth task
for The Village but they have the hurling and team spirit to come
out on the right side of this one. The Club would be more than
delighted to see a large contingent come along and support the
team for this game. With the effort everyone involved with the
team has put in this year it would be fitting if they received the
support they deserve.

Juvenile Club Our U-12s played Cloyne recently in Pairc Na

to say that the team acquitted themselves very well indeed.
Certainly the older players showed that they have the ability to
compete and should hold their heads up high and some great performances. We hope to get in a few more games before the end of
the season. Parents should keep an eye out for texts for upcoming
games.

MIDLETON TOASTMASTERS
Midleton Toastmasters
Now that October is upon us many people are looking around for
something new to occupy themselves during the dark winter
months and into the new year. Toastmasters is now into it's first
few meetings of the new season and we are inviting people to
come along to see for themselves what it is all about. Toastmasters,
at its core, is a community of people who are interested in improving their communication skills. Every two weeks we meet, present
short speeches, participate in impromptu discussions and learn
useful tips from other members. Members learn different aspects
of speaking and communicating, starting with simple talks to eventually presenting more complex, inspirational speeches as members gain more experience. We also have equipment such as a data
projector to help members improve their presentation skills.
Membership of Toastmasters is open to everyone. It's cheap and
entirely self-directed. You are under no pressure to complete the
Toastmasters course in a particular timeframe or attend all meetings, so you can fit your involvement in the club into your own
lifestyle.
Our last meeting was the Humorous Speech and Table Topics
Competition. John Finn won the Humorous Speech competition
with a talk about Youghal during the rare oul' times, and Victor
O'Flynn won the Table Topics competition. They will both compete in the Area Speech Competition in Garryvoe on October 17th
in the Vienna Woods Hotel in Blarney Woolen Mills.
Our next two meetings are on the 13th of October and the 27th of
October at 8pm in McDaid's Pub in Midleton. Guests do not pay at
the first meeting and you will not be asked to speak unless you
would like to. For more information search for "Midleton

KILLEAGH-ITA'S JUVENILE G.A.A.
The weather seemed to be in harmony with the economic outlook
this week, causing some disruption and discomfort for our young
sportsmen and women, and their followers. Our Under 8's had to
cancel their scheduled training on Tuesday, while our Under 13 blitz
on Saturday, which was a fantastic success, was blighted by a couple of heavy downpours.
Bord na nOg Cathair Chorcai; Feile Iomaint fé 13.
On Tuesday last the Lord Mayor, Cllr. Mick O Connell welcomed
all teams participating in this years Fé 13 Feile Iomaint Competition
to the City Hall for a reception to launch this years outing. A great
night was had by all, photos were taken and nibbles eaten as all eyes
were on the wonderful Cup, sponsored by Mahers Sports, that was
on display for the winners of this County competition. This is run
on a blitz/league format over three weekends at different venues
throughout the County.
On Saturday last we hosted one of these blitzes in Pairc Uí
Chinnéide. As we set about defending our '09 title, we welcomed
the visiting teams of our group, namely, Midleton, Ballinhassig and
Douglas. Each would play one another over the course of the day
and when complete the top two teams from the group would
progress in the competition to next Saturday's outing.
Our opening game was against the Douglas boys as Midleton took
on the challenge of Ballinhassig, both games full of anticipation and
thrills as each fought to gain the opening two points of the league
table and when the referees of the day, Maurice Mulcahy and
Christy Hennessy blew the action to a close it was Douglas and
Midleton who had secured those points. Douglas 3-5 to
Killeagh/Ita's 3-3 and Midleton 1-10 to Ballinhassig 2-3. After our
cup of tea and light refreshments, we swapped over, we took on
Ballinhassig and Midleton took on the Douglas boys. Two more
closely fought contests panned out and as the whistles sounded
again, we had secured our opening two points, overcoming the boys
in Blue 2-11 to 2-1 and Midleton and Douglas both added a point to
their tally as they ended their game in a draw, 2-6 a piece. More tea
was had and tactics discussed as we headed into our last game of the
day. It was all to play for as the League table read as follows;
Midleton and Douglas both on three points, Killeagh/Ita's on two
and Ballinhassig bringing up the rear on zero. We knew that only a
win over Midleton would secure our advancement in the competition. We witnessed a thrilling contest as Midleton also knew what
they had to do. It was nip and tuck for the opening half, with both
teams giving it their all and as the short whistle sounded the minimum advantage was in our favour, 0-3 to 0-2. The pattern continued in the second half, tit for tat, as both teams defended well and
applied the pressure in the forward lines. Approaching the closing
stages and hanging on to a point advantage, we eventually broke
through their defence and found the net; we were given a little
breathing space. This was short lived as Midleton were awarded,
not one but two close range frees in the dying moments of this
thriller, but lucky for us they opted to take their points and as we
watched the clock tick, we breathed a sigh of relief as the final
whistle sounded. We had secured our place in next Saturday's outing on a score of 1-6 to 0-5, alongside Douglas who overcame
Ballinhassig in their closing game, 3-5 to 2-4. We look forward to
next week when we will group with three other teams and try to do
it all again and advance to the final. Only one team will qualify next
week from the group, extra pressure. Well done lads and the best of
luck. Many thanks to the ladies who served the tea and refreshments
throughout the day and to those who helped set up the pitches and
tidy up after.
Congratulations
The cailíní have been showing us how to do it in the past week! Inch
Rovers have regained their Senior County Title, beating rivals
Donoughmore in a game of the highest quality on Saturday last in
CIT. Well done to Noel and his team, and to the dedicated and skilful panel of players he has assembled. We'd love to see ye go all the
way this time and win the All-Ireland, so go for it, girls! Also, well
done to the Inch Rovers U-16 team who won the County on Sunday
last, and to Imokilly's camogie team who have qualified for the
County Final.
KILLEAGH CAMOGIE CLUB

Donoghmore!Good luck with the munster campaign. Well done
also to Inch Rovers U16 team on their county success.
Our U15 team took on sars in the Imokilly semi final in Killeagh
on Fri 1st.Sars opened the scoring with a point. Jessica Treacy and
Ciara Daly replied with points before zoe McEvoy goaled. Not to
be outdone leah McEvoy pointed and sars notched up 3 more
points before half time.
After a lovely solo run Jessica scored goal number 2 and a number of points after.Great defending was being done in the back line
by Nora Walsh and Sarah Treacy.Laura Treacy was doing great
work around midfield and dropped a lovely free under the cross
bar and added one or two more over the bar. Ali Rose pointed
also.Sars goaled and had a point before the final whistle blew to
leave us winners. A great game was had by all. We look forward
to the final versus carrigtwohill. Well done to all our girls who
played with Imokilly, who made the win over Ballincollig in the
Senior championship semi-final possible.
Dates for the Killeagh senior B county Final and Imokilly senior

Cork To Cobh 15 Miler
All eyes on Sunday were on the Cork to Cobh 15 Mile event, the
high point of the Cork BHAA season. As always the Midleton AC
singlet was very prominent amongst the large entry with some
excellent performances by several of our campaigners in ideal
weather conditions.. It was great to see some of our Dublin
(marathon) bound athletes advance their preparations with very
solid runs whilst others targeted last Sunday’s event for peak performance, with some top class displays by relative newcomers.
Full results are not available at the time of going to press on
Sunday evening, but will be available shortly on the Cork BHAA
web site.
Cross Country
Away from the road action Sally Drennan our ladies team captain
has been making a great effort to promote cross country running
and encourage our members to form a Midleton AC team. There is
plenty of upcoming action here as well beginning on Sunday next
in Carrignavar. So take note of what’s ahead and consider swapping the road for the fields for a while. Here is the summary of the
immediate fixtures –
Sun Oct 10th - County Novice,U23 and Masters Cross Country,
12pm, Carrignavar
Sun Oct 17th - Munster AAI Cross Country, Macroom
Sun Oct 31st - County Senior & Junior Cross Country, venue to be

Already some of our members have been making their mark in
early season action.
Congratulations to the athletes who competed in the East
Cork novice and masters cross country championships in Youghal
last weekend. The Midleton AC ladies team of Susan Delaney,
Rose Barrett and Sally Drennan won the team competition. Rose
was first in the over 35 category, Susan was second in the novice
section and Sally was first over 45.
Kevin O'Reilly also had a great run in his first cross country race.
Please contact Sally @021 4883960 or 0872265857 for more

CONGRATULATIONS
Newlyweds Mike O'Shea and Esther Barry were feted long into
the night by a huge local crowd after their nuptials this weekend ,
and all in CLCG Lios gCul hope that Mike and Esther have a long
and happy life together and that life brings them the happiness
together that they both deserve .
SUCCESSES
Well done to all of the sides recording milestone successes in the
Club in recent weeks , including the Ladies Football Under 14's
and U12's who each celebrated Championship success last past
fortnight , the success of the U13 hurlers in the pre-Feile
Tournament , as well as great performances by our U7's and U8's
in their hurling blitzes. Indeed , as the playing year wraps up
across all age groups and sports within the Club , it is important to
recognise the individual and collective efforts made by everyone
within our Club . Whether success came your way or not , and
whether you played a large or small role in the Club , we appreciate every minute of volunteering spirit that has been put to such
good use within CLCG Lios gCul in 2010. May enjoyment continue to be your driving force , and success be your reward , in 2011.
Finally , best wishes to our Under 7's , Under 8's , Under 9's and
Under 10's hurlers as they take part in the Inter - County Hurling
Tournament in Cahir , Co. Tipperary next Saturday .
CLUB BUILDING DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME
The first meeting of the Club Development Committee took place
last week in Lisgoold , as the plans for the new Dressing Room
and Complex were unveiled . Much anticipation exists as to the
progress being envisaged . It is hoped that the initial fund raising
event in support of the Project will take place later this Autumn ,
and a quick start to the project will be made soon after . The building work will take up to 12 / 18 months to complete , and it is
expected that the finished project will provide significant benefits
for the Club , and , of course , the wider community . We have
always benefited from the support of the Community , in every
facet , both on and off the field , and know that this support will be
most welcome once again in this long term project . We in CLCG
Lios gCul take our Social Responsibility very seriously , and are
proud of the very small role that we play in our Community is
terms of entertainment and Development of our young people .
This project will assist the continuation of these objectives .
Copies of the plans are available from any Committee member .
CLUBTEXT If you are not yet registered for the free CLUBTEXT service contact Brendan Healy on 087 9176891 to be added
to the free service and ensure you are up to date with all Club matters .
LOTTO The winning numbers in this weeks lotto jackpot draw
were 4 , 6 and 16 , and we had no ticket that matched the numbers
drawn . Therefore the Jackpot Prize continues to grow .
Congratulations to the Consolation Prize winners this week , who
were Declan Whelan, Paudi Ryan, Mike Mulcahy and Terry
Hickey.

Church in Ballintotis on this Wednesday evening (October 6)
beginning at 7.30pm. Parishioners are invited to come along and

SCIATH NA SCOL
Ballintotis NS have performed well in their four matches so far in
the Sciath na Scol football competition. This year, following a
great double winning season in 2009-2010, they have been included in the 13-A-Side competition. The locals recorded early wins
against Cloyne NS, New Inn NS and Conna NS before losing narrowly to Aghada NS in their most recent fixture. In order to retain
hopes of qualifying for this year's final, Ballintotis NS need to win
their remaining two matches which are away to CBC Sidney Hill
on next Thursday (October 7) and at home - at Midleton GAA - on
Tuesday October 12 against GS Machan (1pm). Best of luck to all
involved.
NEW PUBLICATION
A superb new publication has just been completed by the pupils of
the Ballintotis NS. 'Our Big Book - Stories & Poems' was inspired
by well known writer John Sexton. John visited the school on several occasions as part of the 'Writers in School Project' and found
a group of enthusiastic pupils who were more than willing to take
his lead. What has resulted is a publication of original material
with over 100 pages of hugely entertaining stories and poems from
the pen of 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class pupils. Whilst stocks are limited, judging by the early reaction demand is going to very high.
More information is available locally at the school.
GREYHOUND BENEFIT MEETING
Preparations are continuing in advance of the Gala Sponsored
Greyhound Meeting in aid of Ballintotis Community Centre
Building Fund which will take place at Curraheen Park on
Saturday October 23. Members of Ballintotis Community Council
are presently selling admission tickets costing €10 each. However
a family ticket admitting two adults and up to four children is also

€30, with each winning nominator receiving a prize. There is also
the option to dine in style whilst watching all the action - tables of
four costing €50 are also being sold.

full sponsorship for each of the 11 races, whilst advertising is also
being sought for the souvenir race card.

Midleton Ladies Football
All-Ireland 7's
Midleton Ladies made history last Saturday by becoming the first
Midleton Ladies Football team to take part in the All-Ireland
Ladies 7's tournament in Dublin. The tournament was held in
Naonh Mearnog and St Sylvester's Club on the north side of
Dublin. We were drawn in group 2 with Drumlane (Cavan), Glinsk
(Roscommon), Thomas Davis (Dublin) and Scoil Ui Conal (
Dublin), Midleton lost their first game against Drumlane by 0-6 to
3- 9, it took Midleton awhile to settle and get use to the 7 a side
format. Drumlane went on to be defeated in the Semi Final. Round
2 we faced Glinsk where we were beaten by 0-2 to 0-5, this was a
much better effort by all the girls and the game was stuck 0-2 to 03 up until the last 3 mins. Round 3 came quickly, we faced Thomas
Davis who ran out winner by 1-6 to 4-6, goals really made the difference in this game. Finally we played Scoil Ui Conal from
Dublin, this was a cracking game, Midleton lost by a point on a
score line of 4-3 to 3-7. Amy McCarthy nearly rescued us with
some great attempt at goal. This was a great day of football for all
and Midleton will now make this a permeant fixture in the Diary,
we hope that all players would aspire to making this team in the
future. The club would like to thanks Margaret McEvoy, Jimmy
McEvoy, Aidan Dardis and Brian Leamy for helping out with the
girls on the day and travelling to Dublin. A big thank you to the
players, Amy McCarthy, Leah McEvoy, Zoe McEvoy, Leanne
Ahern, Claire Fenton, Laura Daly, Riona Abernethy, Lisa Curtin,
Julia O'Brien, Emma Haughney, Karen Ring. Finally, Midleton
Ladies Club would like to thank John Hurley of Hurley's
Supervalue Midleton for their contribution to the weekend,
Hurley's provided the girls with all the food and drinks for the day
at the 7's. Thanks John.
15 a side. The girl showed that they had gotten over the disappointment of been beaten last week in the East Cork
Championship final against Carrigtowhill. The girls started at a
very quick pace and had a lot of the play in the first 10 mins but
found themselves 0-1 to 1-0 down after the opening 10 mins, until
Orlagh Farmer burst through the Illen defence to blast the ball into
the roof of the next. This passage of play really settled the girls.
Edel Manley and Niamh Farrell were doing a great job in the back
line, these two young players have a great future ahead of them.
Niamh Moloney and Shannon Burke showed some great control in
the middle of the field and gave some great ball into the forwards,
where Leah McEvoy and Zoe McEvoy started to get the upper
hand. The half time score was Midleton 5-07 Illen Rovers 1-01.
Ray O'Brien gave the girls some great encouragement and stressed
that they had only won the first half and not the game. Illen Rover
cam e at Midleton in the start of the second half which was to be
expected, once Midleton weathered the storm they got back into
their stride, with Emma Keane scoring 1-01, Emma had a great
game on the night. Emma Haughney held the centre back position
and made it very difficult for the Illen Rovers star player to make
any ground. Midleton ran out winners on a score of Midleton 5-14
to Illen Rovers 3-06, Leah McEvoy 0-03, Zoe McEvoy 3-03,
Emma Keane, 1-01, Orlagh Farmer 1-03, Naimh Moloney 0-02,
Claire O'Brien 0-01. They work rate of all the girls on the night
was fantastic, they can look forward now to a semi final meeting
with the winners of Castlemagner and Passage.

RDS National Crafts Competition and Student Art Awards
Travelling Exhibitions
The RDS National Crafts Competition and Student Art Awards are
run on an annual basis with an exhibition of selected entries held
during the Fáilte Ireland Dublin Horse Show in August. The exhibition of winning entries and works of excellence from the RDS
National Crafts Competition and the RDS Student Art Awards
travels to a number of venues around Ireland from August to
December each year. The purpose of which is to promote the
excellent standard of art and craft by artists and designers to a
wider audience. It is an excellent opportunity for regional arts centres and venues to host such an exhibition and bring the work to
audiences that may not have had the opportunity to view the exhibitions at the RDS, Dublin.
The RDS National Crafts Competition is organised in association
with the Crafts Council of Ireland and is open to all craft workers
living in Ireland as well as Irish designers based abroad. There are
20 categories and over 40 prizes awarded in the Competition ranging from ceramics and jewellery to felting and woodwork

Muriel, being a coeliac, is aware of the unavailability and lack of
choice of tasty foods that are gluten free in coffee shops and
restaurants. Her novel idea incorporates a wheat free, gluten free
cookie dough roll in various flavours that is refrigerated and can
be frozen. Each roll produces ten ready to bake cookies (Gookies).
The Gookie flavours available are milk chocolate, triple chocolate,
cranberry & white chocolate and colourful M&M.
While Muriel has been researching the idea for some time, she is
indebted to SECAD and Michael Cox for his advice in their Start
Your Own Business course which she recently completed in
Youghal. For further information on Muriel's wheat free, gluten

Senior Hurlers bow out
Midleton Senior hurlers bowed out of the Championship on
Sunday after an exciting game against Glen Rovers. This game
went right down to the wire but in the end despite a brave effort
we came up just short. We managed to hold Patrick Horgan scoreless from play but his team mates rallied to the cause. We struggled to score points from play with Conor Lehane who contributed
four, and who was once again outstanding, being the exception.
We will have to comfort ourselves with the progress we have made
this year. We have a young and talented team who play a nice
brand of hurling. Hopefully the experience gathered this year will
stand us n good stead for the years ahead. The mentors and players put in a huge effort and raised their level of performance to
new heights. We can only be optimistic about the future. However
what is also clear is that though we are close we still have more
work to do if we want to make the breakthrough to contesting and
winning finals. Once again thanks to all involved for the great
enjoyment they gave us this years. We wish them the best as they
conclude their League campaign.
Junior B Hurlers overcome Sarsfields Midleton 1-15 Sars 1-13
Midleton advance in the Junior B hurling Championship as we
held on for victory over a good Sars team on Wednesday night last
in Carrigtwohill. The hard work on the training ground was evident and the mentors will be happy to have overcome this obstacle. This was a game played to a high standard with both teams
giving of their best. We now face our neighbours Ballinacurra in
the semi final this Saturday the 2nd in Carrigtwohill at 2.30 pm.

your magnificent efforts.
Fe-12
Our U-12 Hurlers returned to action on Thursday night Sept 23rd
when we played at home v Carrigtwohill in the semi-final of the A
grade hurling league. This was the squads first outing together
since the disappointment of the East Cork final defeat to Sars at
the beginning of the month. ON the night we were again very slow
to get out of the blocks and found it hard to impose ourselves on
the game in the opening 10 minutes or so. This has been a feature
of this teams play all year and is something that we will need to
address for the years ahead when we are re-grouped with the bigger city clubs as part of the re-organising of the underage structure
in Cork. Once we found our feet and began to play as a unit as we
know we can the lads completely blitzed Carrig for the rest of the
half and went in holding a 4-11 to 0-3 lead. In the second half
Carrig aided by the breeze came into the game more and our lads
took the foot off the pedal a little - again something we need to
avoid in the future and we ended up winning on a final score of 515 to 1-12.
Our Panel on the night was Kevin Mulcahy (Capt) (1-3), Eoin
Moloney, John Dwyer. Padriag O'Brien (0-1), Chris Shanahan,
Adam Daly, Ryan McConville (0-1), Sean O'Leary, Christian

DID you know that you can avail of a SEAI grant for your home
insulation? You can claim €650 for your insulation and €100
towards you energy rating (BER) with a saving of €750. To insulate
the walls and attic of an average 3 bed semi-detached house
that would normally cost €1,100, will cost you only €550 with the
grant.
Insulation is something which any homeowner cannot afford to
ignore. An uninsulated or poorly insulated wall costs you money
and harms the environment. On average, a home loses 20 - 30% of
its heat through its walls and even more if they are not properly
insulated. Whether your motivations are saving the planet, or simply saving your pocket, there are many important benefits of home
insulation, including reduced heating bills and reduced carbon
emissions. Two of the main types of home insulation are attic insulation and bonded bead cavity wall insulation. The latter is a process
whereby the cavity space between a building's inner and outer walls
are filled with polystyrene beads, which are injected into the cavity
via small holes. Grants will be provided to homeowners who invest
in energy efficiency improvements in the following area(s):
* Roof Insulation - * Wall Insulation - this includes either cavity
wall, internal dry lining or external insulation - * Installation of a
High Efficiency (> 90%) Gas or Oil fired Boilers with Heating
Controls Upgrade * - Heating Controls Upgrade - * Building
Energy Rating (BER) - is an integral part to the scheme and is
undertaken after grant aided works are completed

HOME HEATING BARGAINS FOR WINTER
THE IMPORTANCE OF GOOD ATTIC INSULATION
Installing attic insulation is an important part of any effort to make
your home more efficient. Attic insulation does two things to
increase energy efficiency. In the winter it keeps the warm air in
your home from rising into your cold attic. This is a very important function as warm air naturally rises and without any insulation
you will have a hard time keeping your house warm on cold winter nights. Secondly attic insulation helps keep the hot air that fills
up your attic in the summer from pushing down into your house.
On a recent early summer day here in Austin Texas one of our
insulation installers measured the air temperature inside the attic
to be 156 degrees. Even a little bit of hot air of that temperature
making its way into your house can drastically increase the cost of
cooling your home.
The most important thing when installing attic insulation is getting
good coverage of all areas. Having holes or gaps in your insulation
will drastically reduce its effectiveness. This is why many people
prefer to have professionally installed blow in insulation in their
attics instead of using the batts or blankets that you can do yourself. Batts do offer a little bit better insulation per inch of thickness, but they are much harder to get complete coverage with.
Blown insulation can be blown into all the corners and crevices in
your attic to make sure you don't have any gaps or leaks and usually costs less to install both in material and labor costs.
Attic insulation is measured in R values. R value is a measure of
thermal resistance, but all you need to know is the higher the number the better the insulation.
Understand how attic insulation works is also important for figuring out if you need more attic insulation, it works on much the
same principle as a down sleeping bag. it traps little pockets of air
that then form an air barrier between the inside and outside temperatures. These pockets of trapped air are not allowed to move
freely, preventing them from cycling through the insulation and
transferring heat across it.

Chimney Problems to Avoid:
Oil and gas furnaces have distinct burning characteristics and produce
different combustion by-products. However, the chimneys and connector pipes that serve them share common problems. Both systems
are subject to weathering, animal invasions, deterioration and rust-out
and the accumulation of nest materials and debris. Both require regular care and maintenance.
Oil:
Oil flues need to be cleaned and inspected annually because deposits
of soot may build up on the interior wall of the chimney liner. The
amount of soot depends on how well-tuned the furnace is and whether
the house provides sufficient air for combustion. Excessive soot causes problems that range from chimney fires … to flue deterioration …
to chimney blockages that direct toxic fumes back into the house and
cause inefficient furnace operation.
Gas:
Natural gas is a clean-burning fuel, but today’s high-efficiency gas
furnaces pose a special problem. The fumes they produce are cooler
and contain high levels of water vapor, which are more likely to cause
condensation than older models. Since these vapors also contain chlorides picked up from house-supplied combustion air, the flues are subjected to more corrosive conditions than before Even worse, many gas
appliances today use chimneys that once served oil furnaces. If the liners of these chimneys are made of terra cotta (a fired clay commonly
used in chimney construction), bits and pieces of them slowly flake off
under corrosive conditions. The combination of water-laden gas
vapors available to mix with old oil soot deposits speeds this process,
and debris that can block the chimney builds up at the bottom of the
flue. To the extent that problems with either of these heating systems
interfere with the flow of toxic gases and particles out of the house,
they may also force carbon monoxide, fumes and possibly soot into
the living spaces of your home. They may cause a one-time, high-level
exposure situation or release smaller amounts more regularly over a
longer period. These problems should never be ignored.

Under 10 Football Update
Aghada took the windy road to Rathpeacon on the 16th of
September to play a strong Blarney/Rathpeacon selection. An
entertaining game ensued with our lads losing out in a hard fought
game. We played 4 quarters with most players playing a number
of different positions throughout the game. Stand out performances came from Daniel McGauren who was combative in the full
back position and enjoyed a great two quarters in that position.
Cian Cotter scored a fabulous goal – top corner from 20 yards,
whacking a shot on the half volley after it spilled from his grasp as
he bore down on goal. Ivan Merez went between the sticks and
his reputation as having the safest pair of hands in Aghada was
reinforced with a very good display including one great save
which was made at full stretch. Mark McCarthy and Craig Hogan
also put in very good performances. Ruridhri O Connell was at his
tenacious best and Craig Healy also was a constant threat for us,
winning a lot
of breaks, showing very good anticipation.
Later on that week the lads born in 2000, those under tens “on the
age” took the less windy road to Castlemartyr to play a blitz
against Kiltha Og, Youghal and Bride Rovers. We had 9 players
in attendance and they put in some very good performances, and
won all their games.

MIDLETON ROCKY ROAD RESIDENTS
CUT OFF BY NATIONAL ROADS
AUTHORITY
The construction of a grass margin between the Lakeview roundabout near Midleton and the intersection between the Rocky Road
and the N25 without the inclusion of a footpath has been strongly
criticised by Fine Gael Cork East TD, David Stanton. Speaking at
a protest organised by Rocky Road residents this morning,
Deputy Stanton slammed the National Roads Authority (NRA) for
their highhanded approach.
“People have been walking on this short stretch of road for
decades and now the National Roads Authority (NRA) have with
one fell swoop created a situation where pedestrians, people with
buggies and wheelchair users will find it very difficult, if not
impossible, to walk along this stretch of roadway. Even cyclists
have been put at risk by the action of the NRA.
Deputy Stanton went on to say that common sense would have
dictated that the speed limit of 50km per hour be moved out at
least beyond the intersection of the N25 and the Rocky Road, and
that a footpath be included in the grass margin.
“The under-pass providing access by foot from the Rocky road to
the Midleton side of the N25 that was put in place decades ago
contains a lot of steps and its construction would certainly not be
tolerated today. It is almost impossible for wheelchair users and
people with buggies to gain access to the town by this route. It is
also in a terrible condition with litter and graffiti and people are
fearful of using it.
Deputy Stanton said that this is but one small example of a national quango operating without any sense of the needs of the people
that it was set up to serve.
