Girls Guide to the Debs 2011
Re-dress that Debs dress!
Even Debs dresses can be ethical. Clothes reflect personality look well
funky, but they can also be so much more than that. What you wear
can make a difference to the environment and to the lives of garment
workers all around the world. So, when you are thinking of buying a
beautiful Debs dress, bear the following in mind.
Why do clothes matter?
• Clothes making can be a shady business! There can be social and environmental consequences at each stage of clothing production. The materials that make up the clothes may come from GM crops and be sprayed
with pesticides; slave or child labour may be used to make the garments;
dangerous chemicals may be used throughout; and when the clothes are
discarded, they may be thrown out and live in landfills, instead of being
recycled.
• Cheap clothes often means cheap labour. Usually, the employees who
make cheap clothes are paid a pittance, which is not enough for a living
wage. A living wage is a wage that covers the basics a family needs such
as a clean and safe home, food, water, clothing, education, transportation
and health care. It is all too common for garment workers to live in abject
poverty and to be unable to provide these necessitates for themselves and
their families.
• We waste so much clothing! The low cost of clothing nowadays means
that people buy more clothing than they did in previous generations. This
leads to more waste and environmental pollution. Also, cheap clothing
does not last very long, leading to buying more clothes and yet more
waste. Bad for our wallets and the Earth.
• High heels and carbon footprints?! 80% of the carbon footprint of clothing comes from what you do with the garment after you buy it. This
includes how you wash it, what detergent you use, if you dry clean it etc.
So how you care for your clothes may actually increase or decrease global warming.
• 100% unnatural! Many fibres used nowadays are made from by-products of the oil industry. They cannot be recycled and therefore end up in
landfills.
What does this have to do with Debs dresses? Well, there are ways to get
a stunning Debs dress, without compromising on ethics.
How to find/make Debs dresses with heart and soul:
• Get a dress made or re-make an old one. That way you can choose the
material, you are supporting local industries and you know that the person who makes it has proper working conditions.
• Buy local from a boutique rather than a department store. A boutique
will often have Irish designer’s work on sale. These dresses will have
been made in Ireland and the workers will have gotten a decent wage.
• Scour thrift or charity shops. You may find a really cute vintage dress.
• Make your own. If you are handy with a sewing needle, why not give it
a go? It will be totally unique, and you can control the materials and production methods.
• Grill ‘em! Contact shops and manufacturers of Debs dresses and ask
them about their dresses. Is the material ethically sourced, are the workers well paid or are they signed up to The Ethical Trading Initiative? If
not, ask them why not? Will they be changing their policies anytime
soon?
• Love the tree-huggers. Check out some of the ethical clothing lines
endorsed by stars such as Emma Watson. You might be able to score an

Avo i d t h e C a s p e r t h e f r i e n d l y g h o s t e f f e c t !
It’s Debs season and if I can save just one of you school-leavers from
the terrible cosmetic fate that befell me on the night of my own
Debutante ball, then this post will have been worth it.
At 17, I had phased out of my curehead stage and was transitioning nicely into grunge, a look I’d pretty much work, with a dash of skate wear,
until the end of college. But my makeup had yet to catch on and so the
night of my Debs, I applied, as per usual, a trowel-load of green cream (I
was convinced I had high colour – I don’t), over which I applied my usual
mask of stark matte foundation (Max Factor Lasting Finish being a firm
fave at the time) and a very liberal application of matte white powder, just
to seal the deal. I thought I looked a-bleedin’-mazin.
I didn’t.
When the photos came back, oh deary me, that was brought firmly home.
There I was, in my black velvet dress (oh come on, I was only a
young’wan), with a stark and spectral visage dominating every picture.
My supernatural Casper-the-friendly-ghost face glowed out from every
shot and I looked absolutely
godawful.
The kick-back from the camera flash off my layers of green
cream, pale base and inches of
powder caused a complete
void, so I looked like some sort
of faceless creature from the
deep, long starved of the sun.
A slug-like being with
absolutely no facial features, to
boot. Thankfully this horrific
incident predated digital cameras so I could easily destroy
the evidence (it’s burned into
my brain though), but today’s
debutantes are not so lucky.
Keeping that in mind, I’d definitely say, for the sake of the
resultant Facebook shame,
when you’re doing your makeup on the night of your Debs,
do try to match your base to
your actual skintone, and do
make friends with some blusher – it’s amazing the difference
it can make.
Apart from that, I know lots of
you prepping and planning
your outfits for your forthcoming balls won’t necessarily
have a lot of cash to splash on
beauty buys, so here are our
recommendations for impactful makeup on a shoe-string
budget.

Russell Rovers 2-11 Cobh 1-12 Our Junior hurlers played Cobh in
Division 3 of the JHL in Shanagarry last Tuesday night week and collected both points on offer after a hard fought and closely contested game.
The evergreen veteran, Donie Fitzgerald, proved that class is permanent
when he fired over our opening score inside the first minute and added
another 5 minutes later. Cobh then began to find their rhythm and raced
into a 4 points lead by the 20th minute. Indeed, they could have been out
of sight were it not for two outstanding saves by Chris Scanlon and some
excellent defending by Pa Crowley, David Whelehan and James Ahern,
with Kevin Ivers, Tom O'Brien and Ricky Walsh also putting in a good
shift.Ian Smiddy, having earlier pointed a free, reduced the deficit to the
bare minimum when he took on the Cobh defence before whipping a
ground shot into the far corner of the net. Cobh hit back with a goal of
their own but late points by Fitzgerald (2) and Kevin O'Brien (1) saw us
trailing at the break by just two points, 1-8 to 1-6, having played against
a stiff breeze.
The introduction of second half substitutes paid dividends with Shane
Fleming putting over two sublime points and Sean Maher getting in for a
decisive goal to swing the game in Rovers favour. Another brace of points
by Smiddy and one from Whelehan sealed a well-merited win.
Team: Chris Scanlon; Tom O'Brien, Pa Crowley, Kevin Ivers; James
Ahern, David Whelehan (0-1), Ricky Walsh; Tadhg Crowley, Brian
Crowley; Eoin McGrath, Ian Smiddy (1-3), Kevin O'Brien (0-1), Aidan
Beausang, Donal Fitzgerald (0-4), Jonathan Walsh. Subs: Shane Fleming
(0-2), Sean Maher (1-0), Antoin Walsh, James Moynihan, Kieran O'Brien,
James Walsh, Martin O'Donoghue, Martin O'Flynn.
Russell Rovers 3-17 St Vincents 4-5 Our minor hurlers overcame the
challenge of St Vincents with a degree of comfort in the first round of the
Minor A championship which was played in the St Vincents venue last
Sunday afternoon in excellent weather conditions.
Playing against a very slight breeze, our defence which was well marshalled by Kevin Ivers and David Whelehan in the pivotal positions, was
under pressure for much of the opening quarter but dealt capably with
everything thrown at them, though it must be said the city side were guilty
of some wayward shooting. Five points (4f) by Daniel O'Brien, two from
Shane Fleming and one each by Jack Daly and Joseph O'Flynn gave us a
3 points cushion at the break, 0-9 to 1-3, with the Vincents goal coming
from a very dubious penalty in the 29th minute after Daniel Guerin had
made a great save.
A two-goal salvo by Fleming shortly after the re-start and a cracking goal
by Daly in the 16th minute put Rovers firmly in the driving seat, with
Ricky Walsh, Martin O'Flynn, Kieran Walsh and James Moynihan also
contributing handsomely in general play. We then seemed to take our foot
off the gas a little with our defence leaking three second-half goals but
further points by O'Brien (4), Colman Quinlan (3) and a long-range free
by David Whelehan ensured our passage into the next round against St
Catherines on a date to be advised.Team: Daniel Guerin; Brian Whelehan,
Kevin Ivers, Shane Casey; Ricky Walsh, David Whelehan (Capt), Martin
O'Flynn; Kieran Walsh, Daniel O'Brien; James Moynihan, Shane
Fleming, Colman Quinlan; Joseph O'Flynn, Sean Maher, Jack Daly. Subs:
Jack McGrath, Jack Beausang.

McLELLAN SLAMS CUTS TO HOUSEHOLD
BENEFITS FOR OLDER PEOPLE
Sinn Féin Cork East TD, Deputy Sandra McLellan, criticised the
Government's decision to refuse her request to adjourn the Dáil to discuss the proposed cuts to fuel, electricity and phone allowances for
social welfare recipients.
Speaking outside the Dáil today Deputy McLellan said:
"The government has this week approved cuts in fuel allowance and
household benefits. More than 630,000 people across the State who are
dependent on social welfare in order to barely survive, are being targeted by this government in order to save €65million.
"It is unacceptable that Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton can
blame the IMF/EU/ECB for the cuts to these social welfare payments.
These Thatcherite cuts are political choices to target those who are
already vulnerable and marginalised instead of targeting those who can
afford to pay.
"Age Action, Older and Bolder, St. Vincent de Paul and Alone have all
criticised the cuts saying that they will increase fuel poverty. My own
constituency office has received panicked queries from people who are
depending on these payments to just get by.
They cannot take any more cuts. The cuts will increase hardship and
place a massive risk on the health and wellbeing of older people. Cuts
to phone allowance will increase the isolation of many older people.
"Minister Joan Burton is going to implement these cuts in the absence
of any Fuel Poverty Strategy. This will exacerbate the excess winter
deaths this year. The gas allowance is being cut from €489 to €393 a
year even though Bord Gais and other energy providers are seeking to
increase their prices by 28%.
The government has an obligation to protect the most vulnerable and
marginalised in society. Sinn Féin is calling on the government to
reverse these cuts immediately."
EAST CORK BUSINESS ALLIANCE
East Cork Business Alliance ! Who are they ?
On Monday morning July 11th 2011 Cllr Pat Buckley S.F. ( Midleton
Town Council), met with a group of concerned local business people in
The Pantry on Distilery Walk Midleton to discuss how local people could
access local qualified trades people with a proven track record and more
importantly with the added bonus of a local guarantee.
Spokesperson for East Cork Alliance, Mr Ray O Sullivan told me that the
East Cork Alliance is a local business group that have decieded to get
down off the fence of a ever more challenging trading environment and is
endeavouring to establish a business platform that will co exist on two
opperating levels.
Firstly this group supplies a quality trades and severices base to the general public through promotions, special discounts and trough local media
awarness. Secondly they provide a business to business network, sourcing materials and essential services as well as supporting and recommending their colleagues for the greater good of each other.
Now to achieve this the group will need to work very hard for each other
and that every individual in th E.C.B.A. will be a proud ambassador for
each others enterprise through sharing referrals, recommendations and
valuable advice and experience.
As yet the group is at a fledgling stage but with the help of local media
and support organizations such as Secad and a member of Midleton Town
Council, this will be the beginning of a journey that can triumph together.
Already the E.C.B.A. has 13 members which offers a wide range of services such as window repairs to plumbers from kitchen designers to crash
repairs to financial services to restaurateurs.
I would like to take this oppertunity to wish Rory Mc Sweeney (Sweenco
Windows) Eamonn Crotty(Financial Services) Dave Crotty (Ace
Kitchens) Gordon Callinan (The Pantry)Sean Savage(panel beating &
crash repairs) Alan Lomasney (Mechanic/Autowerks Cork) Joe Murphy
(Plumber) Roger Cooney (Electrician) Ray O Sullivan (Waste Solutions)
Jeremy O Sullivan (Woodland Print) John Droog (Tiler) Irene O Driscoll
(O2 Midleton), the very best for the future.
East Cork Business Alliance hopes that the public will recognise and
embrace this new venture and hopes that the business community will see
the value in supporting and promoting each other and thus ensureing that
East Cork is once again a thriving hub of industry and that the Small to
Medium Entreprises are the lifeblood of any local community.
If anyone wishes to become a member they can contact Gordon Callinan

Successful Cobh & Carrigtwohill visit
of Minister Hayes - Stanton
A visit to Cork East Constituency by Minister Brian Hayes on Monday,
28th July was very successful said David Stanton, Fine Gael TD for Cork
East. Brian Hayes TD is Minister of State for the Office of Public Works
(OPW) and Public Service Reform.
"I was delighted to welcome my Fine Gael colleague, Minister Hayes to
Cork East where he had the opportunity to visit a number of locations in
Cobh, as well as Fota House and Gardens and Barryscourt Castle.
"Minister Hayes' visit should prove a further boost to East Cork following the visit of Minister for the Environment, Phil Hogan TD on the 8th
July. Having visited Cobh, Minister Hogan, last week, agreed an allocation of €200,000 in funding for Cobh Library to carry out refurbishment
works. In addition to visiting Cobh, Minister Hogan also went to Fota
House and Gardens, Ballintotas and Youghal," said Deputy Stanton.
"Minister Hayes enjoyed a civic welcome in Cobh Town Hall and
engaged with Cobh Town Council members. He was given a briefing on
commemoration plans for the Titanic centenary next year, 2012, and also
on plans to refurbish the Titanic wall and pier. He was also interested in
proposals to develop a Titanic garden in Cobh.
"On leaving Cobh, I accompanied Minister Hayes while he visited Fota
House and Gardens as the OPW are responsible for Fota Gardens. He
then went on to visit Barryscourt Castle which has been beautifully
restored and recently hosted the annual Carrigtwohill medieval festival.
"I am very pleased to have been able to arrange two recent visits to the
East Cork area by Government Ministers. Minister of State for Tourism
Michael Ring is also due to visit Cobh, Barryscourt Castle and Youghal
on Tuesday, 26th July. I would hope that his visit will help boost tourism
in the East Cork area," concluded Deputy Stanton.

Midleton Town Council Meeting
By Michael Twomey
The meeting began with the Town Clerk passing on a message from TD
Sandra McLellan stating that she would offer any assistance she could to
the members of the Midleton Council when they needed it. The Cork
East TD had planned to be present at the meeting but was otherwise
engaged.
There was no Town Clerk report or Statutory Business this month so the
meeting went straight on to submitted motions.
Motion in the name of Cllr. Noel Collins, received on 30th June, 2011
"In an effort to bring about improvements to school road safety, this
Council enter into dialogue with An Garda Siochana, Bus Eireann,
School Management and Parents Committees', with a view to having a
pick up and drop off point at respective schools, due to the rapid increase
in pupil ratio to all schools." Speaking on his motion, Cllr. Collins added.
"With each new term there will be ore and more pupils. The main problems are in the evening and in the morning. The congestion is also creating a problem for the emergency services. I have raised the issue before
with the relevant bodies but without success. The Gardai are doing their
best." The Councillor warned that the increase in travelling charges
would encourage parents to drive their children to school with buses
becoming too expensive, thereby, adding to the congestion. The
Councillor expressed hope that the issue could be resolved. The motion
was supported by Cllr. Cashman who cited a figure of 3,000 plus ch
ildren populating the school area and said the problems, raised by his
colleague, 'need a remedy'. Cllr. Murphy was exasperated by the fact that
the Dept. of Education had missed an opportunity 'years ago' to develop
the sites by the school to allow parking facilities and extensions. Cllr.
Buckley remarked that the fee of 100 - 200euros onto parents' school
bills will 'bring more cars' to the area while Cllr. Wall said the convent
'should have been kept years ago'. Cllr. Trundle offered an alternative
view, complaining that some people 'will drive into the classrooms'
rather than allow their children walk to school. The Town Clerk added
that he would raise the issue with Cork County Council on the back of
recommendations made in a report by them that the schools area should
be examined in a previous survey. He said their recommendations would
soon be going to public consultation. He also predicted that the solution
would eventually be found when second
ary schools 'will be facilitated in Water Rock' but could not put a time
frame of such an eventuality.
Motion in the name of Cllr. Noel Collins, received on 30th June, 2011
"In the interest of health and safety, this Council request the HSE not to
downgrade the ambulance service in the Midleton region and beyond".
Speaking on his motion, Cllr. Collins said that downgrading the service
was 'not fair on the public'. He added that money had been 'wasted on
reports' that made recommendations 'that were never implemented'. The
idea of a midweek night car with a paramedic was dismissed by the Cllr.
as 'bare-faced theft of tax payers' money'. Cllr. Buckley derided the decision as 'deplorable' opining that 'staff are frightened' and warning 'lives
will be lost'. "What if the so-called car is in Fermoy and is needed in
Youghal? I am vehemently opposed." He concluded. Cllr. Murphy added
his disdain for the move by reminding the chamber that the service had
'saved hundreds of lives' over the years. Cllr. Buckley said the ambulance
service is a necessity that cannot afford to be downgraded and is 'not
designed to
make money'. Cllr. O' Neill attempted to dampen the outrage with a dose
of reality. He said the standard of living in Ireland had fallen. "We have
to get used to the fact that services are not as good as they have been for
the past ten years." His assessment made for rude awakening when he
stated. "Europe is running our country. It's worse it's going to get, not
better." Cllr. Collins suggested that sending correspondence to the HSE
was a 'waste of time' and that the Council should lobby MEPs in Europe.
Motion in the name of Cllr. Pat Buckley, received on 4th July, 2011
"That this Council ask Cork County Council to clean and clear the debris
from the footpath from the Railway Bridge to the base of Bilberry Hill
on the Midleton to Tallow Road". Speaking on his motion, Cllr. Buckley
said the path is extremely dangerous, as pedestrians have to step out onto
a busy road. He asked that the overgrowth be 'cleaned up'. Cllr. O' Neill
said it was not a problem so much with the width of the path but with the
briars. Cllr. Murphy expressed his confidence that if the landowner was
asked to cut the briars he would oblige.
Motion in the name of Cllr. Tom Cashman, received on 5th July,
2011
"That Midleton Town Council ensure that funding be made available for
a general clean up of green areas and landscaping of Council grounds in
Forrest Hill." Speaking on his motion, Cllr. Cashman added that 'this is
a beautiful estate and I hope they get help'. The Town Clerk said he
would discuss it with the Town Foreman.
Motion in the name of Cllr. Tom Cashman, received on 5th July,
2011
"That Midleton Town Council considers the provision of dog poo disposable bins in the town and green areas." Supporting the motion, Cllr.
Collins suggested that dog manufacturers might sponsor bins as they had
done in other towns. The issue of dog bins was poo-pooed by the Town
Clerk who didn't see why regular bins couldn't serve just as well.
"Generally, dog bins are awful and of poor quality," he said. He added
that if dog litter is causing a problem in playgrounds and other areas then
the members should inform him and request that a regular bin be mounted in the troubled area. As for areas beyond the town boundary, such as
the by-pass, he said that was the remit of Cork County Council. Cllr.
Buckley and Cllr. Trundle did not want the discussion to pass without
reminding dog owners that they have the ultimate responsibility for what
their dogs do.
Information
Cllr. Noel Collins asked:
1. Are proposals in train to resurface Main Street and St. Mary's Road,
and if so when?
2. Council repair footpath outside No. 5 St. Mary's Road.
The Town Clerk said he would refer both questions to the offices of Cork
County Council.
Correspondence
Resolutions received from other Local Authorities
Killarney Town Council
"As business in practically all town centres throughout the Country are
in serious decline over the past decade or so, due to the unequal position
of parking charges in these centres compared to retail developments on
the perimeter of towns as the viability of these towns are in jeopardy in
the short to medium term, we call on the Minister for Local Government
as a matter for urgency to include in the Local Government or Review
Programme, mechanisms that will allow Town Councils together with
Central Government to introduce an "Equalisation Plan", town centre
versus town perimeter , across the country. This proposal if passed to be
sent to the Minister, the AMAI and all Town Councils."
In response, Cllr. Murphy suggested that 25% of rates collected beyond
the boundary should return to Midleton Council. The resolution was
adopted by Cllr. Murphy and seconded by Cllr. O' Neill.
Correspondence Circulated with the Agenda
A letter from Special Projects Director of the Post Office, Jack Dempsey
which outlined plans to add another counter at the Midleton Post Office
to alleviate the pressure of crowds and queues and the rejection of a fully
operational office at Ballinacurra due to the close proximity of Cloyne
and Midleton was met with scant regard by the members of the Council.
Cllr. Murphy asked whether Mr. Dempsey was either 'brainless or thick?'
Cllr. O' Neill said the proposal 'goes beyond contempt' and warned that
the Post Office in Midleton cannot cope with extra traffic. He said he
would like to see Mr. Dempsey standing in the queue on an icey morning waiting to be served. Cllr. Trundle expressed her dismay at having to
look at the elderly 'standing in long queues in the rain'. Cllr. Buckley had
the final word when he said it 'will be a huge issue'.
Under any other business Cllr. Sean Buckley wished to acknowledge the
contribution made by any voluntary groups in the upkeep of the town and
cited the Tidy Towns group for particular attention. "Any support we
give them and others would be appreciated," he said.

A more optimistic outlook with regard to your costs, staff and personal
approach were among the key messages delivered by Greg Canty of
Fuzion Communications to a meeting of Midleton & Area Chamber last
Tuesday July 14th. Greg delivered a new presentation about his idea of
viewing as many of your costs as possible as 'positive costs' with a view
towards delighting your customers & providing excellent customer service while investing in your business through spend you will have to make
in any case.
Commenting, Chamber President Killian O'Sullivan said: "We were
delighted that Greg agreed to address us and share his very positive
approach to business. Too many commentators are still stuck in a 'doom

have given people an alternative perspective and given them some new
ideas to try in their businesses."

KILLEAGH CAMOGIE CLUB
Castlemartyr GAA
U18 panel- it has been a very busy week on the field for Killeagh
Camogie Club. However, the sun shone for our second U18 game at Pairc
Ui Chenneide. It was great to see so many parents, family members and
even some of our senior girls supporting the team. Particularly so as some
of these U18’s are already part of the senior team and they all are the
future of our club. A fit and able Mallow team were our opposition and
they had 3 points and a goal scored before Killeagh got into the game!
Kate Murphy opened our scoring with two well struck frees, however
pressure in the backline saw us concede frees which mallow scored easily. At 1-7 to 0-2 we looked to be in trouble, but Roisin Culligan began the
turn-around with a lovely point, followed up by a point from Jessica
Tracey and 2 frees from Kate and a further long range free.
Great defence from the back line of Elaine Terry, Nora Walsh and Ellen
Benaim, coupled with superb hurling from Aoife Walsh and Laura Tracey
at mid-field prevented further scoring from Mallow. Kate scored a much
needed goal from a free, and with 2 further points from Mallow the full
time score was Killeagh 1-7 to Mallow 1-10.
Team mentors J.P Murphy, Tadgh Landers and Mattie Tracey spoke to the
girls at the break, encouraging them and reinforcing their confidence in
their abilities and made a few positional changes and we were ready to go.
Jessica Swayne in goals hit out all that was thrown at her, Becky
Fitzgerald, Shauna Harnedy and Niamh Daly supported the mid-field.
Kate had a few more points, Jessica Tracey and Roisin Culligan were
passing some lovely balls to the inside line of Ashling Landers, Shauna
and Ciara o Connor. Kate scored Goal No.2. Jessica O Shea was introduced and the fresh legs helped the game enormously. A long pass in from
Laura was caught by Shauna Landers and buried in the net. Emma and
olive were introduced and with a fantastic effort by the whole panel we
gained ourselves a great victory 3-10 to 1-11. Our thanks to Sean Oliphant
(Youghal) for being the capable man with the whistle and for being available to us when needed.
In the absence of the Management team it was still game on as our senior
team took on Tracton in the last game of the Summer Cup. With victories
over St Finbarrs, Aughabullogue and Kilbrittain/Timoleague we were all
set to make it a grand slam- and this we did! Tracton opened the scoring
with a point and this was quickly equalled by Kate Murphy. Ann Marie
Walsh had a great run from the back-line and finished it off over the bar.
Tracton responded with two points and just like Ann Marie Walsh, Mary
O’Connor drove up the field and put the ball over the bar. The final ten
minutes belonged to Kate as she added a further 1-2 to her score tally.
Elizabeth Kelly opened the second half with a well taken goal. Things
were looking good for us but Tracton had other ideas -2 points followed
by 2 goals had our sideline crew sweating in earnest- Gillian especially
who was off due to injury- Noelle O Donovan settled our nerves somewhat with 2 well taken points. Shauna Landers delivered a lovely pass
from Mary O Connor to the back of the net. We were able to breathe again
with a 3-8 to 2-5 victory. Never was the cuppa so welcome –in what is
becoming a regular refreshment event after matches –enjoyed this time
even by the gate-crashers!
The Junior hurlers of Castlemartyr continue their
journey in this year’s hurling championship,
when they do battle with Carrigtwohill, on the
Bank Holiday Monday, in Midleton at 7pm.
This is a repeat of last year’s quarter final fixture,
when the Reds were fortunate to scrape home by
a solitary point, in a teak tough championship
match. The same result would be welcome again
of course, with the winners rewarded ,with a
quarter final joust against St.Itas. Please come out
and support the Reds, and best of luck lads.

Senior Hurling Championship
Killeagh 0-16; v Newtownshandrum 2-20;
On Saturday evening last on a glorious afternoon we travelled to Fermoy
to take on the formidable Newtownshandrum, carrying the underdog tag
we opened the scoring within the first minute and managed to go 3 in
front before a swift response from Newtown pegged us back. Fifteen
minutes in we were all tied up at 6 a piece. There was very little to separate the sides within the closing minutes if the first half and then a blitz
by Newtown saw them put 1-3 before the half time whistle to see us go in
at half time with a scoreline of 1-13 to 10 points. Newtown held on to that
6 point advantage for the remainder of the second half. The killer blow
came at the stroke of fulltime when Newtown scored their second goal.
An unfair reflection of the game in general. While our senior status is safe
for next year we still have senior hurling league for the rest of the summer. Congratulations to all concerned and thanks to everyone for the hard
work and commitment.

Glenbower Rovers Contest County u21
‘B’ Football Championship Final
V Cill na Mártra at Pairc Uí Rinn on Friday July 29th @ 7.30pm
Huge Football Occasion For
Glenbower Rovers
Preview by John Cashman
A huge football occasion awaits on Friday evening for Glenbower Rovers
on Friday evening as the club’s excellent Under 21 team head to Pairc Ui
Rinn to contest the final of the County Under 21 ‘B’ Grade Championship
against Cill na Martra. After negotiating some tricky obstacles en route,
the locals face their biggest hour of the season against the Mid Cork side
who have an impressive football pedigree. Club Chairman Tim Crotty is
the driving force behind this Killeagh outfit who began their quest for
divisional glory in late March and now hope to follow in the footsteps of
fellow East Cork men, Erin’s Own who this time last year became the
inaugural county champions at this level.
Fourth Championship Win
Glenbower Rovers football stock has been rising over the past few
decades and whilst the divisional Junior ‘A’ Grade crown may have eluded them, they have won the Under 21 ‘B’ crown on four occasions since
it was introduced to the local calendar back n 1974 when Aghada were the
first winners.
Glenbower’s glory years prior to 2011 were 1990. 1997 and 2005. Now
having reached the final at county level, all involved will be eagerly determined to write a new chapter in their club’s history book.
East Cork Title
As previously mentioned this year’s campaign became back in late March
when the Killeagh lads were involved in a high scoring first round win
over Carraig na bhFear, that ultimately produced in 4-16 to 4-10 win. It
meant Glenbower advanced to the last four and on the other side
Carrigtwohill and Castlelyons came face to face. Glenbower could
scarcely have been more impressive when recording a 3-18 to 0-6 victory over Cobh. Carrigtwohill progressed from the second semi final,
accounting for Castlelyons on a 2-14 to 1-7 score line.
Exciting Match
The divisional final was played at Caherlag and saw Glenbower take the
honours after an exciting match which saw the final whistle blown with
the Killeagh side winning by 2-12 to 3-7. Aided by the wind in the opening half Glenbower raced into an impressive 1-5 to 0-2 lead inside 15
minutes with Sean Long scoring the goal from the penalty spot. However,
by half time Carrigtwhoill had played themselves back into the match,
helped by a goal which saw them go to the dressing rooms 5 points behind
(1-8 to 1-3) but with wind advantage to follow.
Their momentum continued in the second period with the margin eventually being whittled down to just 2 points, before Kevin Lane struck for his
sides second goal, thereby helping to ease supporters’ nerves. Those
nerves were put to the test again as the clock ticked into injury as Carrig’
struck for their third gaol. Thus, the final whistle was greeted with both
relief and delight by the Glenbower contingent who had secured the Jack
Murphy Cup for the club for the second occasion in 6 years.
County Arena
Onwards and upwards then to the county arena where an intriguing semi
final saga was to result in two games against Kilbrittain, which in the end
was only settled after extra time. First day out it finished Glenbower
Rovers 0-10 Kilbrittain 2-4. Then in the rematch Glenbower’s goal scoring ability was the key as the locals advanced winning by 3-10 to 1-10.
Meantime on the other side of the draw Muskerry champions Cill na
Martra recorded wins over Ballinhassig (0-13 to 2-6) and Buttevant (0-12
to 1-6). Earlier in the Mid Cork division Cill na Martra had defeated
Aghabollogue in a quarter final replay, before accounting for Ballingeary
(1-11 to 0-5) in the semi final and Naomh Abhan (2-13 to 1-13) in a closely contested final. The club has a rich football tradition and of course is
best know at present for the exploits of their star player Noel O’Leary,
who is an integral part of the Cork senior team.

Relaxed Frame Of Mind
Looking ahead to Friday’s county final Killeagh/Glenbower club P.R.O
Martin O’Connor feels that the team panel are approaching the match in
a relaxed frame of mind.
“We are known as a hurling club, so the fact that the footballers have
reached a county final has not attracted as much attention. It helps the
lads because the build up is quieter and this has helped the players to take
things in their stride. Reaching the final is a great achievement and is a
great reward for the football people in the club, men like Noel Long, Liam
Kelly, Tim Crotty and Noel O’Connor. The influence of Sean Lavery has
also been a huge factor. His record of achievement speaks for itself and
guys definitely look up to him and respect him in a big way”, comments
Martin.
County Final Prospects:
So what of the task ahead in the County Final?
“Going back to my previous point, neutrals are going to look at Cill na
Martra as being favourites, because they come from a football strong
hold. It would be the same if we were up against a team in hurling final,
who do not have that history behind them”, concluded Martin.
Glenbower have a talented line up from goal keeper Colin McMahon to
their subs bench. Players such as Brian Collins and Sean Harnedy (captain) will be expected to produce big performances on a night when the
Killeagh club will be plummeted into the football headlines if they can
bring home the cup. After last Saturday’s hurling defeat against
Newtownshandrum the senior championship road has reached a conclusion. With the junior football team also in the East Cork JAFC semi final
and Friday’s Under 21 Final now looming large, 2011 could yet be a
famous football year for this most progressive club.

East Cork 2nd round hurling championship Russell Rovers 2-11
Midleton 0-19
Our Junior hurlers bowed out of the 2011 campaign with a defeat to
Midleton again at the Ballinacurra venue, playing with a good purpose
early doors, with Barry Hartnett getting on top at midfield winning good
possession against a stiff breeze we were on their tails for the majority
with Daniel Moynihan pegging the frees and with some good assists by
Seamus Kearney and play from Eoin Ivers, however the aforementioned
Barry hurt his back and had to be switched, and were Midleton took a grip
at mid third going in 10-5 up at the short shrill of Niall Barretts whistle.
Straight from the start a long floating Daniel Moynihan puck was caressed
to the net by Seamus Kearney, suddenly game on, 2 pt game, half backline were well on top, but indiscipline was being punished rhetorically by
Tommy Wallis's long range conversion of frees, going into the final 5
minutes another high ball from Kevin Hartnett out around midfield went
all the way to the onion bag and, now for the first time we held a lead in
the game at a crucial time, Midleton never paniced, they eroded back into
the lead and held out for a hard fought 2 pt win with the last score coming right on the whistle. Our ability not to push on and close out the game
will be a learning curve to our boys in years to come.
Credit must go first of all to the players who trained and traveled all year
after a horrendous first few months, where work-commitments, retirements, immigration, injuries and other factors depleted this team of 7 of
last 15 starters against Castlemartyr in 2010, youth was given its fling
during the league and championship, and in fact over 30 players togged
for both games, which is a great service to our juvenile section in keeping
the numbers swelled.
Richy Lewis the coach was mega all year and led with authority, ably
assisted by Michael Kearney, Dave o Brien as selectors along with backroom of Paddy Tattan, Martin O Sullivan and Sheena Cronin. Thanks to
all. Team Joe Walsh, James Ahern, JP Ivers, Barry Fitzgerald capt, Daniel

one hundred children had fun in the sun as they played hurling & football
games for the week, and on Thursday all the children welcomed Paudie O
Sullivan to the camp, where Paudie was asked questions such as, What's
was the best goal you scored? Who was your toughest opponent?, Whose
better, you or the Rock? Where did the Rock get his name? And so on. A
special thanks to Paudie from all in Russell Rovers for attending the camp
and taking the time to interact with all the Children and answer all those
questions.
The Camp finished up with another massive BBQ, when all the children
were served burgers and hotdogs by the well-known East Cork BBQ chef,
Dave Cahill.

Senior Hurling Championship Killeagh 0-14; Bishopstown 0-9;
Last Monday night in Caherlag we were given the chance to redeem ourselves and secure senior hurling status for another year and we grabbed it
with both hands. Joe Deane got us off the mark with the first of his 8
points in what was an outstanding performance. After 10m minutes we
were 3-1 up. On the 20 minute mark we were 8-4 thanks to some wayward shooting by Bishopstown, but they narrowed the gap slightly coming up to half time where the score line read 9-7. Bishopstown started
stronger in the second half closing the gap to 10- 9 after 10 minutes. Not
mentioning names our back line and centre back line were outstanding
under relentless pressure from the aerial bombardment that Bishopstown
landed on our square. While our midfield and centre forwards continued
to supply good ball to the forward line, unlucky on several occasions not
to find the back of the net. After 50 minutes it was still quite close at 119 and 2 points in 5 minutes meant that Bishopstown had to land 2 scores
to reel in a draw. Again our defence stood firm and a point from Joe with
3 minutes to go put it beyond reach. An outstanding performance by all
and one to be proud of! The draw for the next round of the senior Hurling
Championship was made last Wednesday night we meet
Newtownshandrum next Saturday evening at 3.00p.m in Fermoy. Support
a must for this epic encounter!
Junior A Hurling Championship Killeagh 1-14; Castlemartyr 0-19; On
Thursday evening we travelled to Aghavine for our third round championship game. I don't think there are too many parishes could boast that
they had 3 championship games in one week and line out 3 individual
teams each accounting for themselves in a competitive and sporting manner. Castlemartyr started the brighter and after 5 minutes we were 4 points
clear. Within 10 minutes we were level with a point from Dip and a goal
from Shane after 20 minutes the scoreline read 1-2 to 0-7. Castlemartyr
pulled further ahead at the closing stages of the first half. We went in at
half time with the scoreline of 1-5 to 0-11; The early stages of the second
half saw both teams trade scores equally. After 15 minutes the scoreline
read 1-9 to 0-16. Within 5 minutes we closed the gap to 1 point. On the
26 minute both sides were level at 1-14 to 0-17 points and it looked like
we could pull this one off. A small break in play saw Castlemartyr gain
momentum scoring 2 from play to close out the game at 1-14 to 0-19.
Outstanding performance and again one to be proud of.
Junior B Hurling Championship Killeagh 0-8; Youghal 0-10;
Again all roads led to Aghavine where we played Youghal where we lined
out a 3rd team for the first round of the Junior B Championship. A slow
start by both sides to find their scoring range. We managed to get off the
mark first with the aid of the breeze. Despite the low scoring an enjoyable
and entertaining first half saw us lead at the break 0-5 to 0-3. The second
half saw both sides start the second half with a game of cross bar challenge. Thankfully and unfortunately neither found the net. Both sides
traded scores Youghal eventually gaining the upper hand and just edged
us out slightly. Well done to all concerned another proud evening in the
green jersey.

Cúl Camp is Cúl!
The fine weather was a bonus, as 113 happy children traipsed in and out
of Páirc Uí Chinnéide every morning and afternoon last week for our
annual Cúl Camp. Coaches in every corner saw that our buachaillí agus
cailíní óga had spórt agus spraoi along with no little skill development
over the course of the week. We had young players from Armagh,
Kildare, Waterford, Kerry and Cork city, although our regular Scottish
trio were unable to make the trip on this occasion! Many thanks to all the
coaches involved, but primarily to our co-ordinator Ursula and her backroom team who ensured that everything ran smoothly for the week. Roll
on July 2012!
Busy Saturday morning!
Saturday last saw our young players dispersed in three different directions, with very positive outcomes for all our teams. Our Fé 11 footballers
made the short trip to Ahavine to participate in Round 4 of the inter-club
blitz with our neighbours Fr. O'Neill's, Youghal and Kiltha Óg, with no
hurleys in tow! The football played was of a very high standard, and bainisteoir Brinsley Mac expressed delight with the skill and effort of his
charges. The one disadvantage we had was the lack of substitute cover, as
our eleven boys present played themselves to a standstill, and ran out of
gas a little in the final game against Kiltha Óg which put a blemish on our
100% record, following impressive wins against Youghal and our hosts in
the first two games.
Team: Andrew Foley, Barry Motherway, Mark O'Callaghan, Darragh
Geary, Dan Beechinor, Kieran Daly, Dylan Hogan, Padraig Leahy, Adrian
Galvin, Richie Long, James Kent.
Meanwhile, a few miles west, our Fé 10 hurlers were visiting Caherlag,
where our senior hurlers had tasted sweet success on Monday last against
Baile An Easpaig, where we played our hosts Rogha Eireann in Round 2
of our Fé 10 Group 2 league. We played with the wind in the first half but
this was a low scoring fiche noiméad, with Ryan McCarthy and Olan
Broderick getting our scores to give us a 0-2 to 0-1 half-time lead.
Captain Karl O'Toole was very impressive at midfield, while Danny
Cunningham and Owen Cosgrove swept up lots of ball in the half-back
line. It looked as if this one point lead would not be sufficient, but in the
second half we got a great start with a fine pointed free from David Kelly,
followed by a four-goal blitz courtesy of Olan Broderick, Paul Delaney
(2) and Ryan McCarthy, to put us in a commanding position. Erins Own
fought back with two goals of their own, but we held on for victory on a
scoreline of 4-3 to 2-1. This was a very entertaining game and we look
forward to welcoming Erins Own back to Páirc Uí Chinnéíde on Saturday
for a "cluiche peile"!
Team: David Kelly, Oisin McCarthy, Patrick Barry, Darragh O' Connor,
Daniel Lucey, Danny Cunningham, Owen Cosgrove, Cathal Fitzgibbon,
Paul Delaney, Karl O'Toole, Olan Broderick, Dara Motherway, Ryan
McCarthy, Jonathan Guerin, Robert Sinclair, George Sinclair and Richie
Landers.
Across the county bounds, our Fé 9 hurlers headed east for Dungarvan,
where we had a great battle with the locals, and bainisteoir Colin was very
happy with the effort from all eleven players.
Darragh Buckley, Ciaran O'Rourke and Padraig Landers in particular
benefitted from their week's coaching with impressive performances,
while Ciaran Leahy was scorer-in-chief in the forwards.
Well done the boys in green!
Team: Padraig Landers, Ciaran O'Rourke, Robbie Treacy, Remy Bernard,
Darragh Buckley, Ben O'Connor, Ciaran Leahy, David Scully, Paul Kent,
Ben Jennings and Christian Coughlan.
Senior Camogie Summer Cup- St Finbarrs were our opponents in last
weeks Summer Cup game. Noelle O Donovan opened the score for
Killeagh with a lovely point. The Barrs replied straight away and Angela
Walsh after a great solo run found the target thereby bringing us well into
the game with another point. After that, the game ebbed and flowed at a
great pace, with Noelle following up a well taken free by Mary O Connor
and Kate finishing off the first half with another point to leave the score
Killeagh 0-5 to St Finbarrs 0-6.
Kate opened the second half with a score, but as St Finbarrs found the
back of the net we knew that we had a battle on our hands! Becky
Fitzgerald, Marie Smiddy and Aoife Walsh tightened up the back line,
Mary O Connor the half line was ably supported by Sandra Smiddy and
Anne-Marie Walsh.
The strengthened defensive play drove more ball into the forwards which
resulted in Shauna Landers scoring our first goal of the match. The Barrs
responded swiftly with 2 more points before a well taked free by Kate
went over the bar. With another point from the opposition and time ticking away it looked like we were going to be beaten -however the girls battled on... Their tenacity was rewarded with a marvellous goal from Angela
Walsh as the final whistle blew! The final score was Killeagh 2-7 to 1-9
for St Finbarrs.
Killeagh was the venue for the Kilbrittan-Timoleague V Killeagh
Summer Cup game during the week. This Cup series has given the club
an opportunity to see girls play in different positions and even try out a
new goal keeper! Olive Griffin had her senior debut game- the first of
many it is to be hoped and many of our younger girls are gaining valuable
experience from these games. After a good match Killeagh ran out the
eventual winners of the game.
Many thanks to those parents who contributed to the catering after the
match, it turned into a very sociable occasion.
Well done to Ali Rose Sisk, Nora Walsh and Laura Tracey who won
Munster medals with the Cork U16 team. They beat Waterford in the final
at Cappaquinn on Friday night. We hope that it is just the first of many
Cork Medals for you!
The Camogie Club would like to wish Helen Kennedy a long and happy
retirement. Helen always had a great welcome and an even better fire for
us over the years, it was very much appreciated.
The club would also like to wish Brian (Blondie) and Brendan (Bugsy)
Barry the very best in their new venture and hope that it will be a great
success for you both. Brian gave many years of loyal service to Killeagh
Camogie Club.

AWARDS HONOUR FOR EAST CORK FOOD ENTREPRENEUR MURIEL COUGHLAN
Gookies Scoops Gold Stars in Three Categories at
Great Taste Awards 2011
An artisan food business that was established less than a year ago has
scooped three awards at the 'Oscars' of the fine food industry in Ireland
and Britain. 'Gookies' is a unique range of Irish-made gluten-free cookie
dough. The brand was created by Muriel Coughlan who completed a
Start-Your-Own-Business course in East Cork just last September. She
now supplies cookie dough to twenty-four cafés and retailers across the
country.
A forward-thinking and ambitious food entrepreneur, who established her
business less than a year ago, is celebrating her outstanding success at the
'Oscars' of the fine food sector. 'Gookies', a unique range of Irish-made
gluten-free cookie dough, was launched by Muriel Coughlan just last
autumn.
Competing against some of the most established food brands in Ireland
and the UK, the newly-launched East Cork business scooped an enviable
three 'Great Taste Awards'.
The accolades were handed down by judges and food critics from the UKbased Guild of Fine Food. The awards system has been in place for eighteen years. Gold star recipients can expect to receive an enormous boost to
their sales and marketing campaigns - retail buyers and food service managers frequently seek out 'gold star' winners for inclusion in their product
ranges.
Gookies walked away with awards for the brand's Milk Chocolate Chip
Cookie Dough and Cranberry and White Chocolate Cookie Dough.
The Milk Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough received 'two-star gold' in the
Gluten Free Foods (Any Other) category. The same product was awarded
'one-star gold' in the 'Bake Off Dough' category.
Meanwhile, Gookies' Cranberry and White Chocolate Cookie Dough
received a 'one-star gold' award in Gluten Free Foods (Any Other) category.
Midleton woman, Muriel Coughlan, says she's thrilled by her brand's
awards success: "I'm ecstatic about Gookies' huge achievement. Winning
three awards is just magnificent, especially considering the fact that I've
only been up and running for less than a year. Gookies was competing
against some of the most established businesses in the fine food sector, so
I feel I definitely proved that my product range is one of the best on the
market in the UK and Ireland today.
I'm particularly pleased that we walked away with a gold star in the 'Bake
Off Dough' category. This was a general category and was open to both
gluten-free and non-gluten-free produce. It wasn't specifically for glutenfree products. This award recognises that Gookies is not just a fantastic
gluten-free product - it's a premium cookie dough that appeals to a much
broader target market."
As someone who follows a gluten-free diet herself, Muriel decided to create her own brand after she became frustrated with the quality of confectionary and snacks available on the Irish market.
"Gookies is now available at twenty-four outlets, including cafés, delicatessens, food halls and supermarkets. At cafés, we supply the dough
that's used to freshly-bake our Gookies on the café premises. At retail outlets, we supply refrigerated cookie dough that consumers can bake at
home, or freeze for use as they need it", explains Muriel.
Right now, we're supplying to select outlets of O'Brien's Sandwich Bars,
select outlets of Avoca Cafés and Avoca Food Halls, as well as certain
SuperValus. The brand is also available at two of the Kilkenny emporiums. Because we're a niche product pursuing both the retail and café sectors, there appears to be significant potential for further growth.
They say the first year in business is the toughest but, so far, I've been
absolutely delighted with the brand's progress. The response I've been
receiving from industry buyers, coeliacs and members of the general public has been amazing. I'm sure that Gookies' success at the Great Taste
Awards will open even more doors!"

MIDLETON GARDEN FETE PROCEEDS
It's always nice to reflect on a success story and the hard working committee from the 'Friends of Midleton Hospital' deserve congratulations
after their efforts yielded over 20,000 euro. The occasion was of course
the re introduction of the Garden Fete last month which was met with
great approval of the local public, judging by the huge attendance on the
day. Chairman of the committee John McCarthy was on hand with a
number of colleagues to make the official presentation of the cheque to
Director of Nursing Catherine Doran.
The Garden Fete was solid proof that despite all the changes of lifestyle
that have occurred through the corridors' of time it's still hard to beat a
well organised community event in aid of a worthy cause. Once more the
East Cork public came up trumps with a the their outstanding support.
Surely now the Garden Fete is back to stay as a central part of the summer social calendar. Those of us with faded birth certs can remember
fondly when the annual Garden Fete at the then Carmelite College in
Castlemartyr was an occasion not to be missed.
CASTLEMARTYR WOOD WALK
Coilte's new walk ways at Castlemartyr Wood have proved a big hit with
locals and visitors to the region over the past few months. A walk in the
woods offers the chance to court nature and experience peace and tranquillity. Although the hustle and bustle of the N25 lies just outside,
Castlemartyr offers a fast exit and with the picturesque grounds of the
aforementioned College now of course Castleamartyr Resort, there is the
instant feeling of relaxation apparent. Both new routes are graphically
illustrated on the new maps located just inside the wood entrance (on the
right hand side of the N25 as you one heads for Midleton)
MUSIC IN THE WOODS
If you like your walk with a bit of music thrown in - Glenbower Wood in
Killeagh is the place to be next Monday. To celebrate the last Bank
Holiday of the summer, up to 12 different musicians will set up camp in
what promises to be a great day of family entertainment. Family admission is just 10 euro with all proceeds going towards the upkeep of the
wood.
WHITEGATE ROWERS
This time last year Whitegate Rowing Club were getting ready to host the
All Ireland Coastal Rowing Championships. I remember speaking to
many of the committee at the time and they remarked how much planning
went into the venture, so much so that at times it was very difficult to concentrate on preparing their own teams for participation. A year on with
the All Irelands' due to take place in Wexford it's a very different story.
A big effort has already been put in, reflected in some positive results
being recorded at recent regattas. Thus, many of the locals will travel in
confidence of securing medals. We wish them every success.
ENGAGEMENT
Before leaving the Whitegate region, it's time to raise a glass to Jackie
O'Brien of Hill Road and her hubby to be Brian Murphy who recently
announced their engagement.
BALLINROSTIG'S BIG DAY
'Hat's Off' to all in the Ballinrostig Vintage Committee who put in a huge
effort in advance of last Sunday's 4th annual Field Day. The whole concept of vintage cars, tractors and machinery certainly strikes a favourable
chord with many people and almost every Sunday of the summer, there is
vintage rally in some corner of the county. The Ballinrostig contingent
have certainly played their part in helping worthy causes as all proceeds
from last weekend's event were divided between Midleton Community
Hospital, Marymount Hospice and other local charities. A noticeable feature of the organisation was the number of road signs astutely placed
directing visitors to both the vintage and road race on Saturday.
MOGEELY VINTAGE FAST OFF THE MARK
One of the biggest problems in hosting any event these days is the clean
up/tidying up operation afterwards. Following their 12th annual Vintage
Day held on Sunday week last, members of the local committee were out
and about early on Monday morning ensuring that every thing was back
to normal in the local field and surrounds which hosted so much activity
on the previous day.
Then on Tuesday, up came all the road signs which had been located in
many parts of the region - great to see a committee following up and tidying up. Of course the Mogeely committee is headed by Denis Hennessy
who is one of main people responsible for building up this great annual
occasion. Together the committee have raised thousands of euros for
charity since the inception of the festival. This year's beneficiaries' were
Enable Ireland, Irish Kidney Association and Midleton Hospital.
PAT WINS THE FASHION STAKES
Incidentally we cannot leave Vintage Day in Mogeely without saying well
done to local lady Pat Quinlan, who was deservedly selected as 'Best
Dressed Lady'. Pat was very much the queen of fashion and stole the
hearts of the judges. Well known for her community work, especially
when it comes to fund raising for a needy cause, Pat is always there to
give the helping hand when the occasion arises. Take a bow Pat!
MIDLETON TIDY TOWNS
The work of Midleton Tidy Towns Committee is bearing fruits and is
being noticed. Luminous jackets and new signage ensures that the group
are well seen when at work. To date the group have focussed on a number of projects as they aim to enhance the town and it's immediate environs. The adage 'many hands make light work' seems to be the motto. The
recent painting of the railings at the enhancement of the green area at the
Carrigshane turn off for the town are prime examples of what can be
achieved in a short space of time when people get together.
WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
Next a quick trip to the far end of the town to Elsinore where we extend
congratulations to Tom and Jo Savage who celebrated 43 years of wedded
bliss.
CASTLEMARTYR / DUNGOURNEY / BALLINTOTIS FOLK
HEADING NORTH
After the success of the Feile na Gael competition locally, it's nice to see
that the links made by members of the Kiltha Og GAA Club with their
visitors from Carrickmacross are leading to a reunion. Families in the
local region played host to the Monaghan Club for a three day period in
late June and now it looks like a return journey is on the way. Kiltha Og
have accepted an invitation to sample the Carrickmacross hospitality and
plans are in motion for a trip north in late August.
COBH'S CASCADE
Something different is about to happen in Cobh on Bank Holiday
Monday. Over 6,000 brightly coloured balls will bounce and cascade
down West View - which is one of the steepest hills found anywhere in
Cork county. It's all in aid of local charity - and each ball will be individually numbered and obviously must be purchased in advance. The first
four will win a cash prize for their owner.
Then something different again - what about a Big Ball Uphill Challenge,
where contestants will race up the aforementioned hill pushing a large
exercise ball. To round the day off a family treasure hunt will also be
held. - All in all a busy day in Cobh to follow on last Sunday's 'Australia
Day' celebrations.
LOUGH DERG MIDLETON FUND RAISER
Brian, Gary and the crew at the Maple Leaf Bar Main Street Midleton are
kindly hosting a fund raiser for Lough Derg and the locals who regularly
journey to undertake the famous pilgrimage. It's all happening on this
Thursday evening with complementary home baking and tea being served
from approx 8pm to 9pm. Then it will be time to make way for traditional music, song and dance with many talented local entertainers guaranteed
to provide a lively evening of entertainment.
Lough Derg a unique place of peace, calm, reflection and hope located
about four miles north of the village of Pettigo in county Donegal.
VANITY IN LADYSBRIDGE
A brief word of welcome to Michelle, Sarah and staff at Vanity Hair &
Beauty who have become the newest additions to the Ladysbridge business community.
CARRIGTWOHILL'S GOOD WEEK
Last week was a good week in Carrigtwohill. The announcement of a
major jobs boost for the area is a significant happeningfor the local area.
Then on Wednesday evening three local charities Carrigtwohill
Community Care, Meals on Wheels and CASA saw their cash balance
increase thanks to the efforts of a hardworking local committee who
organised the second annual 5K road race.
550 runners descended on beautiful Barryscourt Castle, which represented an increase of 200 on twelve months ago. Anybody who witnessed the
occasion would have to say the organisation was absolutely top class. The
prizes for top local performers were won by Marc Dalton and Sally
Drennan. - A big 'thank you' to the many sponsors who backed the race.

Minor Hurling Championship Midleton 1-18 Castlelyons 0-14
Midleton minor hurlers opened their defence of the county title when they
faced Castlelyons in Killeagh on Wednesday evening last.. On a lovely
evening for hurlrling Castlelyons were first out of the blocks. For long
periods of the first half they looked the more impressive team. They had
some lovely passing movements and led at one stage by 0-08 to 0-04.
Midleton gradually worked their way back into the game and had the better of the last few minutes of the half to lead by a point at half time 0-09
to 0-08. Midleton management made a couple of poisitional switches at
the break. The changes appeared to work and a general raising of our
game meant that we were doing much better. A fortuitous goal from a long
range delivery by Killian Burke opened up some daylight and Midleton
drove on from there having the better of the exchanges for the last ten
minutes. In the end the margin of victory was seven points. We now face
Glen Rovers this coming weekend though though time and venu were not
to hand at time of writing.
Junior B hurling Championship Midleton 2-12 Sarsfields 1-13
Our Junior B hurlers played their opening game in the championship on
Friday evening last. We faced Sarsfields in Cobh. We had the betterof the
first half exchanges and led 2-07 to 0-07 at half time. Sarsfields had the
better of the third quarter and led by two points at one stage. However
Midleton dug deep and some late points saw us over the line by two points
in the end. We now the winners of Cloyne and Cobh for a place in a quarter final.
Junior A Hurling Championshipn Midleton 1-13 Erins Own 0-13
Midleton Junior A hurlers came through a tight game against Erins Own
on Saturday evening last to qualify for the quarter final of the East Cork
Oil sponsored Championship. This was our fifth game in this years championship and it was a win that was hard earned. We were fortunate to have
Conor lehan available to us and his 0-07 points from play was the difference between the teams. The strong wind which Midleton was blowing
fromcorner flag to corner flag made it hard to score. Midleton had it aiding them in the first half and for long periods struggled to gain an advantage. A stong closing ten minutes saw us open a five point lead at the
break, 0-09 to 0-04. Erins Own applied the pressure early in the second
half and soon had the game tied. We were struggling for scores the games
and the game appeard to be drifting away from us. However a Michael
Keohane overhead pull finished a Jamie O Mahony cross to the back of
the net. It was to prove a vital score. We worked hard to maintain our lead
and came through with a goal to spare in the end. We now face
Dungourney in a quarter final.
Team:Joe Loftus; Alan Cahill (Capt) Alwyn Kearney, Colum Leahy;
Padraig O'Keefe, Killian Burke, Leslie Coughlan; Shane Ryan, Tom
Wallis; Keith Ryan, Paul Barry, Conor Lehane; Davey O'Brien, Micheal
Keohane, Jamie O'Mahony.
Cork Fe 21 hurlers
Well done to the Cork Fe 21 hurlers on their fine win over Tipperary on

McLellan criticises Haulbowline decision
Sinn Féin TD for Cork East, Sandra McLellan has criticised the Minister
for Health's decision not to proceed with a full investigation into the
health risk posed by the Haulbowline dump.
Deputy McLellan said: “The decision by the Minister for Health not to
carry out a baseline health study in the Cork Harbour area appears to be
one based primarily on financial considerations. The fears of the local
community concerning the potential long-term affects of the toxic waste
have not been addressed, and can not be addressed by a simple statistical
analysis of the National Cancer Registry.
“The Chief Medical Officer's response does not go far enough. We want
assurances that the affect of this toxic dump will not have negative health
implications for the local community in years to come. The only way to
give those assurances is by completing a full investigation. I will continue to press the Government for funding to be made available to carry out
this investigation.”

strand there will be fun games for children, e.g. egg & spoon, 3 legged
race and tug-o-war. On the pier there will be a magic show not to be
missed at 3pm. Various stalls will be open during the afternoon on the
pier, lifeboat souvenirs, pottery clay, face painting to name but a few. A
flash mob and Katie O'Connell dancers will entertain the crowds at 4pm.
The afternoon will be wound up with a wet t-shirt competition and from
previous experience anything can happen there, so beware! Many other
things will be taking place throughout the afternoon, too many to mention,
but both the Ballycotton RNLI lifeboat crew and fundraisers hope they
will be well supported in their efforts and that everyone has an enjoyable
and safe bank holiday weekend.

Inter-pub karaoke final at Garryvoe Hotel
on 30th July in aid of Ballycotton RNLI lifeboat
The summer days may not have been so hot this year but the heat was
turned up on the summer nights when contestants sang for a spot in
the karaoke inter-pub final at Garryvoe Hotel this August bank holiday weekend.
This fundraising event is in aid of Ballycotton RNLI lifeboat and
launched in Ballycotton on the June bank holiday weekend when
Hayleigh McCarthy and Laura McLeod became the first qualifiers of the
competition and will represent Waves Café & Wine Bar in the final. A second heat was held in Ballycotton in mid July when Robert Clarke and
Aine Tynan were confirmed as the representatives for The Schooner Bar.
Two heats were held in Midleton this year.Melissa McCarthy was successful along with duet Marie Cashman and Sharon Scanlon in McDaids.
Oonagh Doran and Eileen McGuckian will be representing Wallis' Bar.
Nina Sisk represented The Thatched Inn, Ladysbridge, in 2010 and was
successful once again this year along with Margaret Long.
At the end of June Phil McCullagh and Eveanna Kearney received the nod
from the judges in Tosh Cahill's Bar, Cloyne and at the end of July John
Murray and Bernie Burns were informed they would be representing
Harty's Bar.
The Goal Post, Shanagarry, will be represented by Ramelo Gregario and
Ber Higgins and Shortts Bar, Castlemartyr will send Sean Cronin and
John Mullins to try and bring the spoils home to Castlemartyr.
The Long Point, Whitegate, kept a close eye on the competition before
they held their heat at the end of July. Keith (Socky) Cullen represented
Whitegate in 2010 and will do so again this year. He will be joined by
Budden McGrath as the final qualifiers from the 2011 heats.
21 qualifiers will take to the stage in Garryvoe Hotel on Saturday, 30 July
to sing one last song in this fundraising event for Ballycotton RNLI
lifeboat. The 2010 karaoke final was a hugely successful and enjoyable
night and it is hoped by the organisers this year will be no different.
Supporters of Ballycotton RNLI lifeboat are asked to come out to support
this fundraising event and give encouragement to those brave men and
women up on the stage who in turn are lending their support to the brave
men and women who are on standby 24 / 7 to man our free RNLI lifeboat
service whenever the call comes.

Corkbegs Annual 5-a-side competition sponsored by Rosies Bar, Aghada,
took place last week. East Cork 7 retained their title with a 5-1 victory
over Ringmahon in what was a repeat of last years final. Ian Casey gave
the champions the lead in the 1st half, but Ringmahon equalised before
half time. 2nd half goals by Leesides Derek Delea and Midleton duo Ray
Barnes (2) and Martin Hickey secured the title for East Cork 7, their 3rd
title in 4 years. Earlier in the evening, the Long Point beat the Schooner
in the Battle Of The Bars, with Paudie Wall saving 3 penalties in a penalty shootout. The Long Point were unlucky to lose out to the eventual winners in their semi-final in another shootout, this time East Cork 7 keeper
Cormac Aherne saving 3 spot kicks. Runners-Up Ringmahon, who had
former Cork City midfielder Paul Deasy in their ranks, were impressive
throughout the tournament and had a big win in their semi final.
Unfortunately for them, the champions East Cork 7 were in ruthless form
in the final. Corkbeg AFC would like to thank Vincent O Keeffe of Rosies
Bar for his continued support of the summer tournament and it was
Vincent who presented East Cork 7 captain Cormac Aherne with the cup
in Rosies Bar after the tournament.''

LISGOOLD GAA CLUB
Junior Hurling Championship Preview
Lios gCul v Carrig na bhFearr - Saturday 30 July , 7.15 pm , in
Rathcormac
We now are at the meaty end of the hurling season , with make or break
time having arrived . Our opponents at Quarter Final stage will be the
boys from the western end of the Barony, Carrig na bhFearr, who will
pose a significant challenge , as proven by their victory over Midleton in
the previous round. At the time of writing , manager Mike Woods reports
no injury doubts , with a full panel available to pick from , and a number
of those who did not play in earlier rounds chomping at the bit in anticipation of a position on the starting fifteen .
No doubt that Ciaran Cronin will continue between the sticks , where his
solid and assured handling will surely provide a calming influence on his
defensive sextet . The game will likely come too soon for Noel Connery,
whose recovery continues , and Barry Aherne and Owen O'Sullivan will
vie for the number five jersey in his absence . Veteran Kevin O'Shea will
add a stability to a youthful defence , where Cathal Cashman and Patrick
O'Mahony will hope to continue their early season form.
The choices facing the decision makers regarding the final composition
of the midfield pairing will cause a few sleepless nights for the management team , with the decision on who will partner John Cronin awaited
with some relish . Maurice O'Connell , John Cashman, John McCarthy,
Wayne Kingston and Finbarr Brosnan will surely be pushing for inclusion
here . Up front, Rob Smart, now that his examination commitments are
complete, should come into the reckoning , while John McCarthy and
Jonathon O'Shea will aim to keep the scoreboard ticking in our favour.
A form line is evident as both sides have defeated similar opposition in
earlier rounds , with very similar outcomes , so a close encounter is, no
doubt , likely. However, we will travel to Rathcormac on Saturday with
hope and some expectation of setting up a final four clash with the winners of the Sars v Bride Rovers encounter. Best of luck to all involved.
Junior Hurling League Lios gCul 0.16 Shanballymore 0.14
Corkbeg chairmen Kieran Higgins (centre) & tournament sponsor Vincent
O Keeffe (left) of Rosies Bar present the cup to Cormac Aherne of East
Cork 7, who won the Corkbeg Annual 5-a-side.
A sunny and breezy Friday evening in Shanballymore saw us conclude
our League campaign in the Imokilly / Avondhu League with a tasty
encounter and a visit to Shanballymore. Hot on the heels of a decent challenge victory over Waterford side Toureen , this game was also played at
a frantic , almost Championship like tempo, with out lads outlasting our
hosts for a deserved two point success. These latest two victories were
built on a fluid attacking performance, solid score taking and a tight
defence which allowed few opportunities for our opponents, which augers
well for our Championship Quarter Final on Saturday night . Best for
Lisgoold on Friday night were Barry Aherne, Robert Smart and John
Cronin whose mobility caused endless problems for the Avondhu side.
Congratulations
To Club supporter and neighbour Tom O'Riordan, and Alison Leo on their
fairytale wedding in Effin, Co Limerick recently. We wish Tom and
Alison a long life and happiness together, and a very warm welcome to
Ballyedmond to Alison, our newest parish neighbour. Also congratulations to Wayne Kingston, Road Bowling Champion of Munster, who now
throws in the All Ireland Final, where we wish him continued success .

Shanagarry Blue Jeans Queen Festival
The Annual Blue Jeans Queen Festival gets under way on weekend,
August 5th-7th, in the village of Shanagarry. Hosted by the Russell
Rovers GAA Club, this is our main fund-raiser to help defray the enormous costs of running the Club throughout the year. The Festival is now
in its 35th year and has been going from strength to strength every year
with a tried and trusted formula of entertainment and fun for all age
groups.
Events kick off on Thursday evening 4th Aug with a road race at 8 pm.
On Friday night the Rathcormac-based band "Remonition" play in the
Marquee from 11.30 pm to 2 am with admission only €5 up to midnight.
On Saturday we have an Under-13 blitz in the GAA pitch, starting at 11
am with a Kiddies Disco in the evening from 8 pm to 10 pm for children
up to 14 years of age.
This is followed by an Adult Disco when "DJ Mossie" will be live in the
Festival Dome, rocking away the night to his unique sounds from 11 pm
to 2 am.
On Sunday afternoon the Blue Jeans Queen parade takes place at 3 pm
followed by interviews on stage by MC Pierce McCarthy of 96 FM from
3.30 pm to 4.30 pm. This event is always most entertaining as contestants
get into the fun of the occasion, cheered on by an enthusiastic and appreciative audience. Then it's the turn of the Blue Jeans Princesses to take to
the stage at 4.30 pm - an event for girls between the ages of 4-8 years old
approx. Karaoke in the Park will follow from 5.30 pm to 7 pm.
The Festival reaches a crescendo of excitement when the widely
acclaimed and hugely popular band "Bog The Donkey" take the stage in
the Dome at 11.30 pm with the announcement of the 2011 Queen at midnight.
Admission each night will be €10 and a bar extension will operate until 2
am, Friday to Sunday. ID's will be strictly enforced by Security staff. In
case of inclement weather, all events will be transferred to the Marquee.
A bus service to Midleton and surrounding areas will operate each night,
leaving Shanagarry from 1.30 am onwards.
Don't forget that traffic restrictions will be in place and we would ask
patrons to arrive early and co-operate with the Gardaí, Security Staff and
Festival Stewards to make it an enjoyable weekend for everybody.
The Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank the local residents for their patience and tolerance for the duration of the Festival and
every effort will be made by the Club to ensure that noise levels are kept
to a minimum.
