Its that time of the year again when two major events are held in
Ballinrostig Village 1st event is The Ballinrostig 4 mile Road Race
Saturday Evening 23th July at 7.30pm in conjunction with the East Cork
A.C. and Ballycotton Running Promotions.The route takes in The New
Line, Glanturkin, Ballyvaloon, and finishes back in Ballinrostig Village.
All runners and anybody interested in walking all welcome.So why not
come and enjoy the race and hang around afterwards for music and
craic.Prizes and race are kindly sponsored by Poc Ar Buile Pub.
On Sunday 24th July The 4th Annual Field Day will take place between
1pm and 5pm there is plenty for all the family including Vintage Tractors
Cars and Bikes, Old Time Threshing, Milk a Cow, Sheaf Throwing,
Children's Sports, Barrel Race, Dog Show, Art Competition, Vintage
Model Displays, Children's Treasure Hunt, Cross Cut Saw Challenge,

BALLINTOTIS AREA COMMUNITY COUNCIL UPDATE
Community Hall Update
2011 has continued to be a busy year of fundraising for the Ballintotis
Area Community Council with a number of events after taking place
since our last newsletter. Here is a summary of the events which have
helped us grow our fundraising budget:
Curraheen Park Race Night
Our race night in October 2010 event turned out to be an excellent night
with great support from the local community. On display during the night
were the winning photos from the various classes from the Ballintotis
National School where the theme of the paintings related to the dog race.
Christmas Dinner Dance
Over 120 people attended the annual dinner dance which took place in
Midleton Park Hotel in December.
Joe Mac & Band
A complete sellout of tickets took place in February for the Joe Mac night
at the Two Mile Inn. It was great to see such a large crowd enjoying a
good night of music and dance and based on the positive feedback we
look forward to organising a repeat event next year.
Ballintotis '4' Mile Road Race
The Ballintotis '4' mile race was run on Wednesday 24th April. A record
field of 559 runners crossed the start line on a beautiful evening in the picturesque location. 19 minutes and 34 seconds later, last year's winner,
James McCarthy from East Cork AC, crossed the finish line to retain his
title. The women's title went to Niamh Roe (Eagle) in 23m 27s. Earlier in
the evening, nearly 100 walkers also covered the circuit. Ballintotis Area
Community Council wish to thank all those who organised and assisted
in any way in making the event the great success it was. Thanks also to
the many sponsors, especially our main sponsors, Trabolgan Holiday
Centre and Cork Airport Marketing. And of course a big thank you to
everyone who turned up to walk or run.
Cork Youth Chamber Orchestra
Ballintotis Area Community Council are pleased to report a most successful evening of entertainment on Friday 27th May by the Cork Youth
Chamber Orchestra. It was widely acknowledged by the sizeable crowd
attending that the music provided was most enjoyable and it was great to
see so many talented musicians providing music at such a high standard.
The Chamber Orchestra was conducted by Adrian Petcu. Adrian is a
native of Romania and has been living in Ireland for over 30 years. His
experience, and love for chamber music is widely known and acknowledged. The musical programme which was selected in conjunction with
the CYO Musical Director Tomás McCarthy was a very attractive one.
Ballintotis Area Community Council would like to thank Monsignor
Goold for the use of St Colmans church for the evening, to the local community for their ongoing support and most especially to the Murphy
Centra Cobh who provided all refreshments for the night and to Deirdre
Carr and Josie Knowles who prepared the Church for the event.

Tractor Run Update
A very successful tractor run was held in May. This was the 2nd year of
the event and turned out to be a great success for all. We would like to
thank Mogeely Vintage Club for their assistance yet again in helping in
the organising of the event. We would also like to thank the council members and members of the community who gave their time on Sunday serving food and collecting with the buckets in Castlemartyr.
Latest Status On the Community Hall
Over the last number of weeks work has commenced on the community
hall. The site is now cleared and the mobile home removed. Foundation
works have commenced. It is expected that the coming months will see
significant progress being made with the building.
Hall Funding Update
Ryan Howard, CEO of South East Cork Area Development and Donal
Kelleher , Chairman Ballintotis Area Community Council Ltd. have
signed a €150,000 contract. South East Cork Area Development
(SECAD) have signed a contract with Ballintotis Area Community
Council for the provision of grant aid in the amount of €150,000 to support the construction of a new community centre , total value €325,000 at
Ballintotis , Midleton. SECAD, located in Midleton, provide a wide range
of support to local community groups and local enterprises over a wide
geographical area spanning across East Cork to Ballincollig, Carrigaline
and Douglas.
Minister Phil Hogan,T.D.,Minister for Environment, Community and
Local Government agreed to lay the foundation stone for the site of the
new Ballintotis Community Centre on Friday last..
The new community centre which will be located near the Church in
Ballintotis will provide a much needed centre for the local community
catering for all. The main contractor is HG Construction Ltd. from
Watergrasshill. The building is expected to be complete by this
December.
For any newcomers to our community the main objective of our
Council is to:
Provide a community hall for the benefit and use of all sectors of the community in the locality.
Provide much needed facilities for our Senior Citizens, disabled persons,
disadvantaged families and youth in our area.
Provide a centre with varied indoor sport activities in the area for use during the daytime and evening.
Improve the heritage and environmental features of the area through our
Lake, Tidy Towns and Heritage projects.

This is a famous quote from Mahatma Ghandi, Indian politician and spiritual leader. India is also the place that one Cork woman decided to be that
change twelve years ago, Hope Foundation was established in 1999 by
Maureen Forrest - recent recipient of 'Cork person of the Month' award her aim was to restore basic human rights to the street children in India,
many of whom may not otherwise survive beyond their teenage years.
The Hope Foundation was set up initially to fund one girls' home. Today,
HOPE funds 60 projects in health care, education, vocational training,
drug rehabilitation and child protection. The organisation helps over
18,000 children in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) and the surrounding
areas.
HOPE works with 16 Indian NGO partners to rescue thousands of children off the streets and from the awful poverty of life in slums. This
includes children trapped in child labour, the children of sex workers, special needs children and orphaned children.
Now you too have an opportunity to "be the change" and become part of
this amazing story! Another, less famous local woman, Aileen Smiddy is
travelling to Kolkata later this year to volunteer with Hope and work with
the street and slum children.
She has been involved with Hope for many years and has decided it is
time to not only raise money here in Youghal for the children, but to see
first - hand the profound difference that this money brings to the lives of
children who literally have nothing.
Aileen hopes to raise €5,000 - all of which will go directly to Hope through a series of fun fundraisers over the coming months.
First up is a coffee morning & cake sale on Friday, July 8th at the Red
Store, Youghal. All are welcome from 10.30am.
There is a table quiz with spot prizes and a raffle on Thursday July 21st
in Bertie Dempsey's, Youghal at 8.30pm. Tables are €20 for a table of
four. Although it is a genuine table quiz, it will be light hearted, with a few
twists thrown in! Local celebrity Shane Supple is MC for the evening.

shores, the farmer's market , specialty food shops, and a fine selection of dining facilities offer visitors a wonderful gourmet experience. Discerning visitors are also offered a wide range of excellent

Legend has it that it was here in Ireland that whiskey was invented. In fact, the town boasts the largest pot still in the world. A
stopover to the Old Midleton Distillery is a must. This beautifully
restored 18th Century distillery is now a renowned tourist attraction and visitors have the opportunity to become certified whiskey
tasters!
Midleton derives its name from 'Mainstir na Corann' meaning 'The
Abbey of the Choir'. This name came from a Cistercian
monastery, founded here in the 12th Century, but sadly, destroyed
in the 19th Century. St. John the Baptist Church is believed to be
the site of the old Abbey with records dating back to 1302.
Notable historic buildings in the town include Midelton College,
one of the oldest schools in Ireland which was founded in 1696 by
Elizabeth Villiers, a favourite of King William II (Good King
Billy). McDaids, once a hotel, then police barracks during the War
of Independence, was designed by renowned architect Pugin who
revived the Gothic Style in Church Building. The current library
(previously the Town Hall) was built in 1789 and is identified by
a weather cock of larch on top of the clock tower.
Nearby the historic villages of Cloyne, Castlemartyr, Killeagh,
Shanagarry and will woe visitors with their tales from the past and
21st century crafts. Cloyne, with its 11th Century Round Tower
and Cathedral, was home to two very famous Bishops. Bishop
Berkeley had a Californian University named after him and
Bishop Brinkely was the first Astronomer Royal for Ireland.
Shanagarry was home to William Penn, the founder of the state of
Pennsylvania in America and here, you will now find the famous
Stephen Pearce Pottery and the world-renowned Ballymaloe
Cookery School - yet another food aficionado's nirvana.
Midleton is the perfect destination for a great holiday or a day trip
with a huge variety of activities and attractions for all. For the

Ballycotton, a picturesque angling village, overlooking
Ballycotton Lighthouse is yet again another perfect location for
your break to the Midleton area in East Cork. Renowned for its
relaxing ambience and spectacular cliff walk, this quaint little port
is legendary for its sea angling and maritime history. It was off
Ballycotton in 1837 that the famous steam ship the "Sirius" was
lost. She had previously been the first passenger steam ship to
cross the Atlantic.

12th ANNUAL MOGEELY VINTAGE FESTIVAL
SUNDAY JULY 17TH
Mogeely Vintage Club will host their 12th Annual Vintage Festival on
Sunday the 17nd July. To date the club has raised over €160,000 for charities including ACT, Marymount Hospice, CASA, Midleton Community
Hospital, Irish Wheelchair Association, Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind
Association and Cystic Fibrosis Ireland. Due to the difficulties in raising
funds being experienced by all charities and organisations in the current
economic climate Mogeely Vintage Club has decided this year to donate
proceeds from the event to three charities, Midleton Community Hospital,
Enable Ireland Cork and the Irish Kidney Association.
This years festival will take place in Mogeely Community grounds and
will commence with the parade of a steam engine lead by a piper through
the village of Mogeely to the vintage field at 2pm on Sunday the 17th July
followed by the events official opening by the clubs great friends "The
Bachelors in Trouble" from Waterford.
Year after year the number and variety of vintage tractors, cars, motor
bikes and engines goes from strength to strength with in excess of 500
exhibits expected this year. One of the striking aspects of this years festival is the list of varied attractions that the committee have lined up yet
again. The Old Time Threshing will take pride of place where we will be
able to reminisce to bygone days. Live music throughout the day will be
provided by the ever popular Pa Daly with a specially prepared dancing
stage available for those who wish to dance the day away. Other attractions on the day will include baby show, dog show, best dressed lady, slow
tractor race and barrel race. Also this year the committee are introducing
sheave throwing, tractor balancing, trailer reversing & speed car wheel
changing. For kids there will be bouncy castles, amusements and pony
rides with the highlight being the kids sports for all ages.
This year the festival committee have also introduced events on the
Saturday night (16th July) which include a Vintage Car and Tractor run
which departs Mogeely at 7pm and travels through the local villages of
Castlemartyr and Killeagh before returning to Mogeely. This is then followed by an interpub 5 a-side tug-of-war in the local Community grounds
at 8pm. There is great interest in this event and it should not be missed!!
As the festival approaches it is a big well done to the local committee for
making this event possible. Judging by the professional and dedicated
attitude of this terrific group of people, the Mogeely Vintage Festival
looks set to be another great success this year. The committee would like
to pay special tribute to their many sponsors and the local community for
its overwhelming support and like to extend a warm welcome to you all
to the weekends events.

FANTASTIC LINEUP ANNOUNCED FOR THE GUINNESS
KILTHA RIVER TRAD FEST 2011 28TH - 31ST JULY
The diverse and exciting lineup for the second annual Guinness Kiltha River
Trad Fest has been announced, and includes stars of the traditional music
world, including Matt Molloy, John Carty and Arty McGlynn, Eleanor
Shanley & Mike Hanrahan, North Cregg & Eoin Coughlan, Liadan, Abbey
Ceili Band. This year, additional festival events include Circus Stachamoose,
an amazing puppet show for all ages, Edwina Guckian's lively Sean Nos
Dancing Workshop and an exhibition of Limerick based artist Des Farrell's
work entitled In the Pockets of God.
Running in the historic village of Castlemartyr, and embracing the town in a
number of venues this year including the Marquee at Pat Shortt's Bar, the
breathtaking Castlemartyr Resort and St Anne's Church. For four nights coming up to the August bank holiday weekend, Pat Shortt has persuaded an
exceptional lineup of guests to take part in this years' Guinness Kiltha River
Trad Fest.
On Thursday 28th July the Fest opens at 6pm with an art exhibition being
held as an element of this celebration of Irish culture. Limerick-based artist
Des Farrell will show a collection of work, a gathering of sculptural assemblages and printed images called In The Pockets Of God. Modern day artifacts
based on information culled from catalogued townlands, place names and
objects, are merged together to create fresh hybrids. Over the years Des Farrell
has been a crusader on a mission to stop us, the viewers, from confusing the
familiar with the banal and his work, though familiar, is idiosyncratic, intriguing sometimes even bizarre. In The Pockets Of God will be on view in Pat
Shortt's Bar. The Fest kicks off musically in fine style in the Marquee at Pat
Shortt's Bar on Thursday 28th July at 8pm with the pairing of Eleanor
Shanley and Mike Hanrahan, along with some special guests. Known for her
work with De Danann and renowned for her unique interpretation of Irish and
roots songs, Eleanor has worked with the inimitable Ronnie Drew, Christy
Moore and Sharon Shannon, and as a soloist both in Ireland and abroad.
Eleanor has often worked with Mike, formerly of Stockton's Wing. Mike
worked as a writer, producer and guitarist with Ronnie Drew and is also well
known for his work with Leslie Dowdall, Maura O'Connell and Tommy
Hayes and has a successful solo career. Tickets, as with all the Guinness Kiltha

Friday 29th July at the Marquee at Pat Shortt's Bar at 8pm sees the epic coming together of three distinctively talented musicians - Matt Molloy, John
Carty and Arty McGlynn. Phenomenally gifted, each of the trio has a proud
and distinguished career. A founding member of The Bothy Band, Matt
Malloy appeared with Planxty, released highly acclaimed solo albums and
teamed up with Paul Brady, Tommy Peoples, Micheál Ó Súilleabháin, Dónal
Lunny and the Irish Chamber Orchestra among others. He especially well
known for his legendary role as a member of The Chieftans. Arty McGlynn is
one of the most respected musicians and quite possibly the most influential
Irish guitarist in traditional music, having played guitar on the critically
acclaimed 1989 Van Morrison album, Avalon Sunset, played duo performances and recordings with uilleann piper Liam O'Flynn and his wife fiddle player Nollaig Casey. John Carty, born in London, has a love for fiddle, banjo, and
flute, all of which he has mastered, and has three solo fiddle albums, two banjo
albums, two group albums and a sprinkling of tenor guitar and flute music
recordings under his belt. Matt, Arty & John recorded an album together back
in 2007 and have been working together regularly since. This is an unmissable
opportunity to witness some of Ireland's finest musicians, with tickets €22.50

Saturday 30th July in the Marquee at Pat Shortt's Bar at 8pm sees a fantastic double bill of Eoin Coughlan, followed by North Cregg. North Cregg continue to produce some of the freshest and finest sounds to be heard in Irish
music today, rooted in the vibrant traditional music of their native County
Cork and embracing musical influences from around the world to create a distinctive and charismatic sound. Eoin Coughlan, one of Cork's most renowned
singer/songwriter's formerly of Nomos, and has collaborated with Paddy
Casey, Gemma Hayes, Damien Dempsey and The Frames. He has recorded a
critically acclaimed solo CD 'Blood in Vein'. At €17.50 through Ticketmaster
or €15.00 through the bar, these tickets will sell fast.
On Sunday 31st July in St Anne's Church at 6pm ,Líadan, the innovative, allfemale group whose gorgeous vocals, melodic harmonies and spell-binding
arrangements will be appreciated all the more in this beautiful church venue.
Voted Best Young Irish Traditional Act and Best Newcomer at Ireland's Music
Awards 2009, this band's fifth anniversary is marked by the release of their
stunning new CD 'Turning the Tide'. Tickets are €17.50 through Ticketmaster

On Saturday 30th July at the Castlemartyr Resort at 4pm, and building on
it's reputation as a family Festival, this year we are proud to present the Circus
Stachamoose, an amazing puppet show for children and adults alike. To be
held in the picturesque Castlemartyr Resort Hotel, Tommy Baker will entertain and amuse with a mix of storytelling, humour and the intermingling of
fantasy with realism, inspired by Irish Folk Legends. Weather permitting this
show may move outside into the beautiful backdrop setting of the
Castlemartyr Resort grounds. Bookings to be made through Pat Shortt's Bar
for this event.
Also on Saturday 30th July at 12 noon in the Marquee at Pat Shortt's Bar,
Edwina Guckian's Sean Nos Dancing Workshop proved a huge hit at last
years' Fest, and she is looking forward to being back at the Fest this year. A
hugely successful and experienced dancer, Edwina's Workshop is welcoming
and inclusive and caters for beginners and advanced dancers, children and
adults of all ages.

One of their long term members Ina McCarthy has invited the group
to show their work in her newly-opened premises 'Ina McCarthy for
Flowers' 44 Main St. Midleton. The front of her shop will be given
over to the exhibition from Sat. July 16th to Sat. July 30th - open
each day except Sun. 10am - 6pm.
As ever, members spent a very productive year painting at home and
abroad. Life drawing sessions and group painting days were held in the
Blue Note Gallery, Shanagarry. Before Christmas a very successful workshop was given by Niamh Hurley making accessories and jewellery from
different fabrics.
The theme for the Christmas fancy dress party in Finín's was 'Going
Dutch', as last November the group visited the National Gallery in Dublin
to view the work of the Dutch master Metsu. Nearly all the members
dressed up as either a Dutch painter or characters from Dutch paintings.
Van Gough won first prize, followed by 'The Arnolfini Wedding'. Great
craic was had by all.
After Christmas several members attended Paverpol workshops in Jackie
O'Donnell's studio in Cork. Each person made a sculpted piece suitable
for indoors or outdoors. Paverpol sculpture is weatherproof, and lovely
figurines will grace many a garden this summer as a result of these workshops. Mary and Niamh Hurley went on to do a master class in this medium with Jossy de Roode, from the Netherlands, supplier of Paverpol products.
In May, Brigid Shelly again welcomed members to paint with her in the
Dingle peninsula. Nine people availed of her hospitality and a lot of good
work was produced - some of these pieces will be in the exhibition.
Many members took part in Community Art related activities. Five of
them helped pupils of CBS and St. Brigid's National Schools to mount a
sculpture exhibition made from tin cans and tinfoil. This was as part of a
competition to make pupils aware of the need to protect the environment
and to impress on them the need for recycling. Some very imaginative
work was produced.

Mary Mockley and Niamh Hurley, both graduates of the Crawford
College of Art and Design, helped the pupils of Shanagarry National
School to transfer their ideas to a wall in the school garden. A giant mural
with avatars in a fantasy landscape was the result. The fantastical work is
about 20' long and 5' high.
Individual members took part in exhibitions in various galleries. Brigid
Shelly has just had a very successful solo exhibition in the Courtyard
Gallery, Midleton. Works by several members can be seen in the
Courtyard Gallery, as part of the Art Source Network, and various other
exhibitions throughout the year.
This year's exhibition, in 44 Main St., will show work in various media.
There are paintings to suit all tastes and budgets. Do go along and visit
and enjoy. Everyone is welcome to browse. The exhibition will be opened
by Mr Joe McCarthy, town clerk. Members wish to thank their sponsors

Fe 21 Football Quarter Final Midleton 2-11 Millstreet 1-09
Our Fe 21 Footballers enjoyed a thoroughly deserved five pouint victory
over Millstreet in the County quarter final on Monday evening last in
Castletownroche. Over the course of the hur Midleton were very strong
physically and took the gae to our opponents. In the first half a Cormac
Walsh goal ensured we led by two points at half time on a 1-04 to 0-05
scoreline. In the second half a goal from a penalty by Stephen Moore was
responded to immediately by an excellent goal by Millstreet. However in
the last ten inutes Midleton added some four fine points to see us over the
line and into a county semi final.

Fe 21 Football Semi Final Midleton 1-05 O'Donovan Rossa 1-14
Midleton Fe 21 Footballers were back in Championship action on Sunday
last when the played O'Donovan Rossa in the county semi final at
Carrigadrohid in ideal conditions. Midleton got off to a fine start and were
leading 1-01 to 0-03 after ten minutes. However where we had the physical and fitness advantage in our quarter final win over Millstreet on this
occasion were were matched in these aspects of the game. Our opponents
were a well drilled side who footballing skills were evident and we were
struggled to contain despite the whole heated commitment of all our players. It was all one way traffic for the second quarter as our opponents
added on five more points without reply to lead 0-08 to 1-01 at half time.
Though we had more of the possession in the second half we found scores
hard to come by as Skibbereen build their tally. We were within touching
distance until the last couple of minutes when the Skibbereen men goaled
to seal their well derserved victory. It has been a fine achievement by the
lads and their mentors to secure their first East Cork A grade title after so
many years and to reach a county semi final.

Junior A Hurling Losers Round Midleton 0-19 Russell Rovers 2-11
Our Junior A hurlers were in losers round action in the East Cork
Championship on Tuesday evening last in Ballinacurra. In a well contested game we came through with a couple of late points to secure our place
in the quarter final against Erins Own. Midleton had first use of the wind
and in the first quarter it was score for score. We opend up a fice pint lead
by half time thanks to some fine scores from placed balls by Tom Wallis
and from play by Conor Hehane and paul barry. Russell Rovers scored a
soft goal right from the restart and from their to the end it was nip and
tuck. A goal with four minutes left put Russell rovers a point up and the
pressure was on. Tommy Wallis levelled with a free and an excellent point
from sub Ian Fitzpatrick edged us a head. Paul Barry added another point
to see us over the line.

Midleton cyclist Alan Sheehan completes the Race Across America 2011

Midleton cyclist Alan Sheehan Team Youghal were accorded a heroes'
welcome home recently on returning from their marvellous and monumental coast-to-coast charity cycle across America. The homecoming
that saw locals cheer and applaud as the Youghal Pipe band led the seven
cyclists and ten-man support crew through Youghal town centre. For
once, the team travelled on foot, their bikes having failed to materialise
from their Heathrow connection flight hours earlier.
Under sunny skies, Youghal musician Mark Ansbro entertained the crowd
before MC Tommy Collins and Mayor Eoin Coyne formally welcomed
the jet-lagged, leg-weary legends in the shadows of the Clock Gate.
Days before, the team had completed a gruelling 24/7 relay cycle in the
Midleton Cycling & Triathlon Club member Alan Sheehan cycling across the
plains of Kansas at dawn.
Team Youghal who cycled across America for the Emer Casey Foundation;
included are Christy McCarthy, Brian Hehir, Kieran Groeger, Ger Flanagan,
Michael Hines, Brian Fitzgerald and Alan Sheehan.
30th annual Race Across America (RAAM). The first 8 man Irish team to
complete what is deemed cycling's toughest endurance test, they had
crossed 12 states from California to Maryland and, on day 3 alone, had
climbed to 12,000 ft. ('That's three times the height of Mount
Carrantuohill- Ireland's highest mountain,' as Mr. Collins graphically
illustrated it.). Averaging 16.42 mph and sometimes hitting four times that
speed on lengthy downhill stretches, they had completed the 3,000 mile
trek in one week, fourteen hours and five minutes. They finished the race
in an immensely impressive 24th position from about 70 competitors.
The cyclists even managed a five-kilometre charity run in Central Park
days later, following a reception at the Irish Consulate General's Office in
New York.
The team's historic achievement was undertaken to raise awareness and
funds on behalf of the Emer Casey Foundation. The registered charity,
which was established in honour of Emer, who died aged 28 from ovarian/uterine cancer in 2006, funds research into early diagnosis of the disease.'
One has to spare a sympathetic thought or two for Youghal chief fire officer Tommy Roche, who must feel cursed by the gods of RAAM! Having
had to withdraw from the race due to a training accident in California, he
was even denied attending the homecoming as the fire service received a
call-out on its way to greet the team!
Team leader Ger Flanagan thanked all who had supported the venture,
including American TV and Home Theatre Installation company Firedog,

FAMILY FUN DAY IN CASTLELYONS
Castlelyons GAA Juvenile Club will be holding a Family Fun Day on
Sunday the 17th July 2011 at the GAA pitch from 12pm to 6pm. The day
will start with hurling & camogie blitz's for our underage teams ranging
from U6 to U10. Clubs from Fermoy, Bride Rovers, Kiltha Og and St
Catherine's will be competing on the day. All participants will receive a
special commemorative medal on the day.
There will be a huge array of novelty events, rides, slides, bouncy castles,
fun competitions and exhibitor stands present on the day which no doubt
will attract great interest. There will be merry go rounds, gladiators, long
puck, giant slides and a barrel train for small kids to name but a few. There
will be excellent prizes for the winner's of each competition with most
competitions catering for different juvenile age groups and adults.
Refreshments and food will be available to all on the day. A monster raffle will be held on the day with a huge number of great prizes on offer.
One of the highlight's of the day will be the release of up to 1,000 balloons
from the main pitch for our balloon race at 5pm. Hope to see everybody
there on what should be a great day for young and old.

Killeagh GAA 15th Annual Golf Classic 2011
As a club we were very proud to hold another very successful golf classic
at Youghal Golf Club on Thursday, Friday and Saturday last. This year
thankfully the weather held out. A total of 133 teams teed off and a great
outing was had by all. The winners of the prizes were in first place
Rathcormac Tyres; 2nd place Breda O'Donoghue's team - Fr. O'Neills
Ballymacoda; 3rd place Kieran Foley's team - West Waterford. We would
like to express our gratitude to all those who participated and to our very
generous sponsors Abbeylands Nursing Home, Fermoy Nissan and ITW
graphics who made this outing possible. We would also like to give a special thanks to Youghal Golf Club for hosting the event and for a wonderful meal provided. A special credit to our committee members especially
Sean, Ursula, Vincent and of course Mr. Rochford himself who's passion
and commitment to this club is relentless and who is already gearing up
for next year's classic!!
GRADE 2/3 CLUB TOURNAMENT
On Wednesday 27th and Thursday 28th July, Lower Aghada will host a
special tournament for Grade 2 and Grade 3 players. Depending on numbers there will be a number of events including Singles, Doubles and
Mixed Doubles. The tournament will offer players the chance to meet and
challenge players of their own level and aims to encourage more regular
games between them. Entry is just €7 for a single event or €10 for multiple events.
RESULTS
Lower Aghada's junior players have continued to put on great performances at the various junior opens which have taken place in recent weeks.
In the Douglas Junior Open, Lower Aghada's Mark Griffin won the U10
Boys' competition, defeating Munster ranked player Bobby Kahn in an
epic match (6-4, 4-6, 12-10). Following this win, Mark captained the winning U10 team in Sunday's Well Junior Open.
Lower Aghada dominated in the recent junior open in Bishopstown as
Gavin Kirrance, Shane Connor, James Gillespie and Mark Griffin all
reached semi-finals of U10 Boys' Team Roundrobin event.
In senior tennis, Lower Aghada's Ken Duffy reached the final of the Men's
Combined Grade 1/2 Doubles in Lakewood, where he and his partner
Vincent Quirke were defeated by #1 seeds Paul Cotter and Joe Donovan
(6-3, 6-2).
CLUB NIGHT
Club Night continues EVERY FRIDAY from 8-10pm and all members are
invited to come along and join in a few social games. It's a great way for
new members to get more involved and meet other like minded members.

MIDLETON AC SENIOR SECTION
KILLEAGH CAMOGIE CLUB
Not even the torrential rain nor the challenge of a very new and a very
hilly course could dissuade our team of forty-three members from lining
up for the Corkbeg 5 miler in Whitegate last Thursday night. Vincent
Connolly led from the back of the field, once again sacrificing his own
race to ensure that his group of new members negotiated the demanding
re-routed course. Amongst Vincent's rookie squad, Karen Morrissey and
Melissa Cashman both put in solid performances. Helen Gilroy, Sinéad
Ivers, Colette Barry and Susan Buckley, all had impressive runs and there
is a rumour out that this quartet will be in Dublin in the autumn as part of
the Midleton AC marathon team. Great to see Margaret Rohan running so
well alongside Mags Twohig, Berni Twomey, Joy Sexton and Noreen
Fitzgerald. At the top end of this highly competitive ladies race Ann Geary
was fourth overall in 34:59 with the ever-improving Anna Doris a single
place behind her in 36:26. Also at the business end of things were Dublinbound Deirdre Ahern, Mary O'Keeffe, Joan Hough and Christine Murphy.
Our men's team was led home by John O'Connell in 31:51 with John
Cashman 32:06 and Tom Cody 32:13 wading in just behind. Both Vincent
O'Neill and John Carey recorded season's bests while Mark Walsh, Karol
Watson, Danny McCarthy, Denis Kelleher, Donie O'Connell and Barry
Ahern impressed yet again.
On the previous night, in drier conditions but on equally hilly terrain, our
club captain struck gold yet again. Leading by example is becoming the
cliché of possession for Edmund O'Sullivan. At the EMC 5k organised
under BHAA rules, Captain Fantastic romped home to claim gold in the
0-45. Wonderful also to witness the welcome return to form of the great
Dan Horgan who played second fiddle to Edmund in claiming silver. With
a sense of déjà vu, Tom Cody picked up yet another 0-55 category prize
(just how many more trophy cabinets will he need to make?). Also continuing to impress is Darragh Canavan whose 30:06 in the Dungarvan 5miler
on Friday night last was a pb. Not to be outdone by hubby, Caitríona
Canavan also had a super run in Dungarvan as did both Suzanne Sloane
and Joan McCarthy.

U16 Camogie
In what was our last League match we took on Buttevant at home in Pairc
Ui Chenneide. Despite a number of our girls being unable to play those
that remained certainly rose to the challenge! As always Ciara Motherway
executed some brilliant saves, ably abetted by our trusted back line. With
some great play from the forward line we lead at half time –Killeagh 0- 6
to Buttevant 0-2. Jessica Tracey scored 2 frees early on in the second half
and this spurred Buttevant to reply with 2 points before they hit the back
of the net with the first goal of the match. Ashling Landers produced a
lovely point in great style. There followed goals from both Ali-Rose Sisk
and Hannah Looney, as tension rose and Buttevant scored 2 more goals.
The deciding score of the match went to Jessica Tracey who scored a last
point. The referee blew the whistle and called it a draw, despite the opinion of the tally women on the side line.
Cork U16
Cork U16 Camogie team beat Clare during the week. The Killeagh flag
was flown on the night by Ali –Rose Sisk and Nora Walsh. Well done
girls.
Senior Team:
A great day out was had in Moneygall by all who travelled but sadly it didn’t result in a win for our Senior girls.
The Cork Summer Cup is our focus at the moment and this week we plan
to play St Finbarrs and Kilbrittan.
Senior Championship is against Barryroe on Tuesday 26th in castle
Road.
Well done to all our girls who lined out and won the Munster Senior
Lady’s football with Cork on Saturday last.
FR. O’NEILL’S CAMOGIE CLUB
East Cork U15 League Fr. O'Neill's 2-5; Cobh 1-1
Fr. O'Neill's opened their U15 campaign with a well merited win over
Cobh last Friday night in a game which was played in Cobh. It did take
us a while to settle into the game and Cobh took an early lead with a well
taken goal inside the first two minutes. However, we responded well and
despite playing against a slight breeze in the first half, Ciara O'Neill
scored a fine point, and this was quickly followed by a goal and a point
from Keelagh Cullinane. This left the half time score: Fr. O'Neill's 1-2;
Cobh 0-1.
At the start of the 2nd half Cobh put our backline under severe pressure,
but our defence held firm and ensured that we held onto our half time lead.
This was down to excellent defending by all our backline and goalkeeper,
but special mention has to be given to Sarah Lee and Dara O'Sullivan who
both played superbly. Keelagh and Sarah O'Sullivan got to grips with the
Cobh midfield and our forwards got a better supply of ball. This resulted
in a fine point by Kate McCarthy who did well in her new role in the forward line. This was followed by a fine individual goal from Sharon
Murphy, who followed up with a point. Our scoring was completed with
a point from a free by Keelagh. Cobh responded with a point to leave the
final score: Fr. O'Neill's 2-5; Cobh 1-1.
This was a good start to our league campaign. What was most reassuring
was the effort put into the game by the whole team. This together with the
high skill level of the players should ensure that this team will compete
well in the games ahead.
Also, congratulations to Sophie Kearney and Sharon Murphy who are currently training with the Cork U15 development squad.

On a beautiful sunny Sunday morning we faced Dungarvan in a practice
hurling match in Killeagh. We started well when Killian Treacy grabbed
a long range free from Kevin Murphy and turned the full back and buried
it. That set the trend for the first half and with good defensive play from
Jamie Clifford in goal, Kevin, Emmett, Jamie Landers, and Daniel we
were 1-5 to 0-4 ahead at half time. We started the second half as we ended
the first by hitting over three points, before Dungarvan scrambled in a
goal. We now took total control with Kevin Murphy outstanding at centre
back. Hard working Christy Coughlan and flashes of brilliance from
Aaron Walsh saw us dominate midfield, while Killian and Andrew were

last. The Killeagh-Ita's boys started stronger and continued to dominate in
all positions throughout the game. There were some great individual displays in defence and attack. A final score of Killeagh-Ita's 6-12 Cappoquin
3-3 saw us comfortable winners.
Fé 10 Iomáint
Our Under 10 hurlers hosted Carrigtwohill on Saturday morning last in
Páirc Uí Chinnéide. We were missing quite a number of players who were
'ar saoire', but those who played did very well. We didn't win as
Carrigtwohill were a little like Tipperary in front of goal, but we did score
as often as they did! Final score Carrigtwhoill 5-1, Killeagh-Ita's 1-5.
Richie Landers was our goalscorer while Olan Broderick, Robert Sinclair
and Ben Ingamells also shone out for Killeagh-Ita's, and Oisin McCarthy's
puckouts were much improved. Next up it's Erins Own next Saturday in
Caherlag, where hopefully we will be following our senior team's victory
over Bishopstown, if things go to plan on Monday evening!

Fe 16 Fe 16 Premier 2 Football league v Killeagh Itas played in Midleton last
Wednesday. We resumed our league games last week with a good victory over
our visitors, whilst it took some time to get the rustiness out of our game we
finished very strongly to win comfortably in the end by 4.11 v 0.04 Team: Brian
Rossiter, Luke Dineen, Billy O Shea, Luke Morrissey, Sean O Farrell, Gavin
Bagnell, Cillian Deady, Darren Quirke, Patrice Tschmange, Calem Deady,
Padraic Nagle, Imbiblio Bello, Robert Willams, Michael Abernethy and John O
Farrell, subs used Josh Deady, Eanna O Brien, Lochlinn McCarthy, Colin
Shanahan and Shane Buckley.
Fe 10 Midleton Fe 10's hosted Sarsfields on Tuesday 28th of June in Clonmult.
This was the first of a series of 15 games to be played against various opposition teams. The game itself was 11 a side format and twenty minutes a half.
Midleton played well throughout the game scoring some great goals and points.
It was good to see the lads helping each other out, showing some maturing in
their understanding of the game. Well done to all and thanks to Sarsfields for
making the trip. Midleton also hosted Mayfield in Clonmult Park on Tuesday
last in the series. Mayfield arrived shorthanded and three of our lads made the
selfless gesture to play for the opposition. The game itself was very much in
Midleton's favor. Our lads proved strong and never seemed to struggle throughout the match. Well played to all who attended and thanks to Mayfield for coming over. On Saturday 2nd of July half of our Fe 10's travelled to Rathcormac
to play Bride rovers in the summer series. We travelled with 13 players for this
11 a side game and unfortunately had to use substitutes. However everyone got
good game time. Both teams were evenly matched and the game finished close
with some very good performances across the team. On the same day Erins
Own travelled to Midleton to play the other half of our Fe 10's aided by a couple of Fe 9's. Again Midleton were strong and the games finished level. Well
done to all who played in the four games last week.
Fe 9 On Thursday the 30th of June our Fe 9 hurlers headed for Castlemartyr to
play Kilta Óg in a challenge game. On the night we had 33 players which was
a great turn out, Kilta Óg had 25 so a few of our players played one half with
Kilta Óg and the second with us. We picked three 11 aside teams and played
two 20 mins aside games which was enough on a warm evening. There was
great hurling played in all games with both teams giving everything and at the
end the only winner was hurling itself with all players on the night playing a
full 40mins hurling which can only improve all players. Thanks to Kilta Óg for
the match and again to all the Midleton parents for the support on the night. We
will continue to train all summer on Thursday nights and Saturday mornings
and for anyone going on holidays enjoy and have a safe trip.

Feile Peil What a week for Midleton GAA Club and it's juvenile section. The
once in a blue moon completion made its way to Cork and Midleton had the
pleasure to host New York. The week started on Tuesday last with a welcoming party in the club and the following morning the New Yorkers played Kilta
Óg in a challenge followed in the afternoon with a trip to Trabolgan. On to the
competition itself and we kicked off with a well contested match between
Midleton and New York which our visitors came out the stronger. Over the next
day and a half Midleton won against Fr O'Neills and lost their other matches
against Crossmaglen Rangers and Erins Own while New York went on to win
all their games and progress to the Semi Finals. On Wednesday night Sam
Maguire made a visit to our club accompanied by the National League cup.
Friday's semi final saw New York finally bow out to the eventual winners St
Enda's of Belfast. On Saturday, Our visitors travelled to the finals and then
returned to a BBQ in their honour. Along with the fine weather and tasty food
our guests were treated to some great entertainment from Ceoltas and John
Shanahan. What made the evening all the more special was the sight of
Midleton's pitch full of newly made friends from both sides of the Atlantic.
Sunday saw our visitors travel to the Munster football final where at least one
person arrived back happy. PRO for the New York minor board - Colm Kelly
at least had the decency to hide his Kerry jersey when he returned to Midleton.
Overall a great week and here's wishing New York a safe trip home and may
they like us retain some great memories of the Feile week.
VHI CuL Camp - our Cul Camp for which we have registered almost 120 boys
is on this weekfrom the 4th to the 8th of July from 10am each morninguntil
2pm, more details are available on our Club website or from coordinator Jim O
Sullivan.
GOLF CLASSIC - Our Juvenile GAA Golf Classic will take place on
Thursday the 21st and Friday 22ndof July at EAST CORK GOLF CLUB, the
competition is a 3 ball scramble with some great prizes for all in addition to
Ladies, Seniors and Non GUI team prizes.
Any Sponsorship is very welcome, teams cost €120.00 each which includes a
burger on the 9th, agoody bag, free entry into a draw and a meal afterwards and
Sponsorship of Tee Boxes is also available @ €50.00 each.
Everybody is welcome to attend the presentation of prizes in the clubhouse on
the Friday night where entertainment will be provided.

CASTLEMARTYR GAA NOTES
J H L S1 Newtownshandrum 2-16 Castlemartyr 4-10
Castlemartyr and Newtownshandrum shared the points in a cracking
league game played in Newtown last Sunday morning. Man of the match
Evan O'Keeffe grabbed 4 goals for the reds in what was a tough hours
hurling and excellent preparation for championship. Castlemartyr had a 3
point advantage at half time on a score of 2-8 to 1-8. The first of Evan's
goals game after a great effort by Jimmy Smiddy came crashing off the
crossbar with Evan ready to gather the rebound and finish to the net. His
second was more of a poachers goal after the Newtown goalie failed to
deal with a high ball into the square. Brian Smiddy scored a beauty of a
point from distance and Donacha O'Tuama who also got on the score
sheet. Newton enjoyed more procession in the second half with the slight
breeze at their back and were quickly level with 3 points. They went even
further ahead after that but Evan O'Keeffe again found the net to tie up the
game. A Newton goal however put them back in control but again Evan
O'Keeffe stepped up with his best goal of the game. Gathering procession
in the 21, he beat 2 Newton defenders and finished to the corner of the net.
With the game now level, Castlemartyr were awarded a free with Jimmy
Smiddy sent over to give us a one point advantage with only a few minutes remaining. However, Newtown were awarded a free of their own
which they converted to steel victory from Castlemartyr. Best for
Castlemartyr on the day were, Evan O'Keeffe who kept us in the game and

Castlemartyr kept their hopes of reaching the knockout stages of the
league alive with a comprehensive victory over Castletownroche on Wed
night. With the pain of the heavy championship defeat still hurting,
Castlemartyr showed good character with a much improved performance.
Castlemartyr led by 1-9 to 0-05 at the break with the goal coming from
Evan O'Keeffe. The second half proved very one sided with Castlemartyr
dominating possession and running out easy winners in the end.

NEW SCHOOL FOR MIDLETON/CARRIGTWOHILL
Minister of State at the Department of Education and Skills Seán Sherlock
TD has said he is delighted that Midleton/Carrigtwohill has been earmarked for a new primary school between 2012 and 2015. "This is a significant announcement in terms of meeting the future educational needs of
the area and the growing population which has placed huge demands on
education providers locally. It is one of 40 new schools nationally that will
be established over the next 6 years and signals a clear commitment by
this Government to making education a priority," said Minister Sherlock.
"There are still challenges ahead in terms of meeting the accommodation
needs of many existing schools but this is certainly a step in the right
direction," he added. The Department of Education is forecasting an
increase of over 45,050 primary pupils and 24,900 post-primary pupils by
the start of the 2017/18 school year. These new schools will be in addition
to the seven new primary schools opened in autumn 2010. The new
schools will generally be sixteen-classroom primary schools and up to
1,000-student post-primary schools. Work will begin over the coming
months on identifying suitable greenfield sites to house the new school
buildings.
