21st Sunday of Ordinary Time
Note for Holy Cross Ministers Holy Cross-Office staff is
implementing Sacramental Stipends comparable to our
neighboring Catholic Churches. The office staff thanks you for
your understanding and apologizes for any misunderstanding or
inconvenience that this may cause your ministry in Baptisms
Classes, Weddings, etc.
Changes to Holy Cross Church Baptism Class procedure
we are working towards pre-registration for baptismal classes
where people will have to register by Friday before the baptismal
class. If they are not having their child baptized at Holy Cross
Church, just attending the class here then there will be a $10
stipend per proof of class attendance due at the office pick up .
NEEDED: 2 people to teach the English Baptism Class will
alternate every other month with Deacon Nick Curran. The class
is held the third Tuesday of the month at 7pm in Hayes Hall it
lasts approximately 1 to 2 hours. Deacon Nick will train. If
interested or would like more information please call the Rectory

Our Lady of Sorrows is looking for English and Spanish
speaking catechists to teach religious education classes starting
in September. All lessons and leadership materials are provided.
If you are interested in volunteering to lead students to the
Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion,
please contact Anabella at 966-4941.
There is also a need for: Preschool Teachers
Preschool teachers care for children between three and five
years old who have not entered kindergarten. The preschool
education focuses on motor skills, social/emotional development,
and language development. Notre Dame Preschool is seeking
experienced bilingual Preschool Teachers to work Monday
through Friday. Please email cover letter, proof of credentials,

Qualifications:
 12 units of early childhood education that includes units
in Child Development, Child Family and Community,
Curriculum, and Child Safety and Nutrition.
 Prior lead teaching experience in a licensed preschool
program.
 TB clearance and a health report.
 CPR and First Aid certificate.
Responsibilities:
 Create lesson plans that carry out a curriculum, which
targets different areas of child development, such as
language, motor, and social skills. Leads circle time,
classroom activities, and excellent supervision.

The Jesus who comes to us in the
Eucharist is the Christ who comes to us always in the most
distressing guise – in the poor, the stranger, the immigrant, the
prisoner, the terminally ill and the unborn. The One who says,
“This is my Body,” also tells us, “As you did it to one of the least
of my brethren, you did it to me” So we prove our love for God by
our love for those God has created and put into our lives –
especially those who are hard to love or a burden to love.

Archbishop Gomez Responds to Assisted Suicide Law
With the new “End of Life Options” law we are crossing a line
– from being a society that cares for those who are aging &
sick, to a society that kills those whose suffering we can no
longer tolerate. Our government leaders tell us that granting
the right to choose a doctor-prescribed death is
compassionate & will comfort the elderly & persons facing
terminal & chronic illness. BUT killing is not caring. True
compassion means walking with those who are suffering,
sharing their pain, and helping them bear their burdens.
Loving your neighbor as yourself is not a duty we fulfill by
giving our neighbor a lethal dose of pills. Assisted suicide
represents a failure of solidarity & will only increase the
sense of isolation & loneliness that many people already feel

On Saturday, August 27, 2016 the Queen of Angels Foundation,
in association with the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, the
Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, and La Iglesia de Nuestra
Senora de Los Angeles (La Placita, the first Church in Los
Angeles), will host the Sixth Annual Votive Mass, Grand Marian
Procession, and Festival to honor of Our Lady of the Angels,
patroness of the City, County and Archdiocese of Los Angeles
named for her (Nuestra Senora de Los Angeles). This is also the
Archdiocese’s official civic celebration of Los Angeles’ birthday,
founded on September 4, 1781.
The current schedule and timeline for the event on Saturday,
August 27, 2016 is as follows:

3:00 pm – Holy Votive Mass begins at the Cathedral

4:30 pm – Marian Procession and Parade commences
(from the Cathedral, down Temple St., to Main Street
and the Plaza/Olvera)

5:15 pm – Benediction in La Placita Church


Did You Know? Pool safety is about more than swimming:
Swimming is a un way to have some fun and beat the heat
during the summer. Parents should teach their children about
swimming safety, including how to identify and handle
uncomfortable situations. Although you may be watching closely
to make sure your kids are safe in the water, don’t forget about
when they’re walking around, sitting out by the pool, using the
restrooms or out of sight. Teach your children what to do when
they fell uncomfortable at the pool, and let them know it is okay to
walk away and find a parent or trusted adult at any time. For

Cambios en el procedimiento de Clases
Bautismales en la Santa Cruz Estamos trabajando
hacia la pre-inscripción para las clases bautismales donde
la gente tendrá que registrarse a más tardar el viernes
antes de la clase. Si ellos no están bautizado su niño en
la iglesia Santa Cruz, simplemente asistieron a la clase
aquí, entonces habrá un estipendio de $ 10 para la oficina
al momento de recoger su constancia de la clase.
NECESITAN VOLUNTARIOS: 2 personas para
enseñar la Clase de bautismo en Inglés se
alternarán cada dos meses con el Diacono Nick
Curran. La clase se lleva a cabo el tercer martes de
cada mes a las 7 pm en el Salón Parroquial Hayes
tiene una duración de aproximadamente 1 a 2 horas.
El Diacono Nick los entrenará. Si está interesado o

Arzobispo Gómez Responde a la Ley del
Suicidio Asistido Con la nueva ley de “Opciones para
el final de la vida” (End of Life Options) estaremos
cruzando una frontera: de ser una sociedad que se
preocupa por aquellos que están envejeciendo y están
enfermos, a una sociedad que mata a aquellos cuyo
sufrimiento ya no podemos tolerar. Los líderes de nuestro
gobierno nos dicen que el conceder el derecho a elegir
una muerte prescrita por el médico es algo compasivo,
que confortará a los ancianos y a las personas que
enfrentan la enfermedad terminal y crónica. Pero matar
no es preocuparse por la persona. La verdadera
compasión significa caminar con los que están sufriendo,
compartiendo su dolor, ayudándoles a sobrellevar sus
problemas. Amar al prójimo como a uno mismo no es un
deber que cumplamos dándole a nuestro prójimo una
dosis letal de pastillas. El suicidio asistido manifiesta una
falta de solidaridad y no hará sino aumentar el sentimiento
de aislamiento y soledad que mucha gente experimenta
ya en nuestra sociedad. Con esta nueva ley, estamos
abandonando a nuestros prójimos más vulnerables y
frágiles, calificándolos como “no dignos” de nuestros
cuidados, atención, y como un “gasto excesivo” para
nuestros limitados recursos sociales. (Lea más en Nueva
