RECONCILIATION (Confessions)
The Sacrament of Reconciliation is celebrated at 4:00 P.M. on
Saturdays. The priest will remain in the confessional for as long as
penitents are present but not later than Mass time.
BAPTISMS
Baptisms are celebrated on the 1st and 3rd Sundays at 1:30
P.M. In order to better appreciate this sacrament, parents meet
with Sr. Peggy for an interview and then attend our Baptismal
Program. The Baptismal Program is offered once a month.
Godparents are also welcome to attend. Please call Sr. Peggy at
883-2782 to make arrangements.
Baptisms in Spanish are celebrated on the 2nd Sunday at 1:30
P.M. Please call Fr. Antonio Abreu at 883-6675.
MARRIAGE
Couples should call the Rectory at least SIX MONTHS in advance.
No date or any other arrangements should be made until the couple
has been interviewed by a priest or deacon.

I will be turning to the season of retirement at the end of
this June. This will allow me to visit more frequently
with my sister, Mary, and brother-in-law, Jim, who live
in Florida. The last eight years as Pastoral Associate at St.
Peter's have been very enriching and inspiring for me.
I have been privileged to minister to you and with you
during the different seasons of your lives.
1962 was the year that I started teaching, and through the
decades, God's love and grace have allowed me to share
my time and talent with the People of God. Praise God
from whom all blessings flow!
P.S. My brother-in-law has received a kidney transplant (on
Holy Saturday) and is doing very well. Thank you for your
prayers.
In the Gospel today, Jesus stands in the midst of
us and says: “Peace be with you!” As you put
your gift into the St. Vincent de Paul box you say
“Peace be with you!” to those who are poor and hungry.

Dear Parishioners,
On Easter Sunday we had more people here than ever before. Parking was a problem for two of the
Masses; we should have these problems each week. Nevertheless, people were joyful and willing to
celebrate. The Holy Week services were well attended. Thank you very much for your presence.
Thank for your generosity in the Easter Sunday collection. The collection for the Holy Land on Good
Friday was very good. I guess people are more aware of the struggles facing the Christian community
in the Holy Land. At the Hispanic Mass they took up a collection for the refugee children in Lebanon,
which amounted to over two thousand dollars. The money will go towards providing schooling for
these children.
I would like to express my gratitude to the following people for their presence and hard work during
Holy Week and Easter.
Robert Bobek, who directed the music for all of the services;
The Choir, who sang at several of the services;
The Cantors, especially Charlene;
The Hispanic Music Ministry, who provided joyful music on Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and
at the Spanish Easter Liturgies;
Fr. Antonio and Fr. Gregory;
Deacons Joe and Frank, who were present at all the services and preached wonderful homilies;
Sr. Peggy Tully, who helped out at all of the services, and was present to so many parishioners.
Looking at the televised services from Rome and from our own Cathedral was inspiring. The Rome
services were particularly moving; there was obvious joy there. Hopefully, all of this will help us to
appreciate the gift of our faith - the difference it can make in our own lives and in the life of the world.
This Sunday, Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II will be canonized saints. Both have been an
inspiration to the Church in two very different eras and in two very different ways. As we celebrate
Divine Mercy Sunday, let us pray not only for mercy for ourselves, but also for the grace to bear mercy
and forgiveness towards others.

St. Peter of Alcantara
Saint Zita
Saint Zita, the patron saint of domestic workers, was born in Tuscany in a village near the
city of Lucca, Italy, about 1218. Her family was poor, but pious, and her mother was
credited as a great teacher of the faith. Zita’s mother taught her to consider whatever
work she undertook as assigned to her by God, and to take on even the most burdensome
or tedious of tasks as penance.
At age 12, Zita was sent to a wealthy family in Lucca to work as a member of the household staff. She was a quiet, prayerful child, and was known to be a very hard worker,
responsible, respectful and conscientious. Each day she woke up earlier than the family
or staff and spent time in prayer. She then went to Mass before taking on her assigned
duties of the day.
Zita’s employers scoffed at her piety, and her fellow servants resented her hard work
and industriousness. As a vulnerable young girl, she was mistreated, beaten and abused,
both mentally and physically. But Zita endured the wrongs done to her with courage,
perseverance and a prayerful determination to maintain an inner peace. By her humble
self-restraint, she succeeded in overcoming the harsh malice, and in time, the family
appointed her chief steward over all household affairs and domestic staff. Indeed, her faith-filled witness brought
the entire family to a religious conversion.
Zita was considered an excellent manager of the household, and noted for her kindness, generosity and compassion. In her later years, she was practically venerated by the family. She died peacefully in their house on April
27, 1278 at the age of 60.
After her death, Saint Zita became one of the most popular saints in Europe, especially among servants, laborers
and the poor. She was canonized in 1696 and became the patron saint of Lucca and domestic workers. The poet
Dante used her name in his epic poem Inferno. Today, her body is on display for public veneration in the
Basilica of San Frediano in Lucca where she worshipped most of her life. Her feast day is April 27.
Stewards Find Hope in the Cross
Do you ever think about how you experience the cross of Jesus Christ? Do you ever think about the power of that cross in
your daily life? Is the cross even relevant to your life? It is to stewards of the Lord, who recognize the hope Christ brings
through the gift of his cross. They acknowledge that for them, the cross is their only hope.
Being good stewards of our life in Christ is not easy, but to embrace the cross is not only countercultural, it seems absurd.
Then again, we cannot avoid what Jesus said to his disciples: “If you wish to come after me you must deny yourself and
take up your cross daily and follow me. For if you wish to save your life, you will lose it; but if you lose your life for my
sake you will save it” (Luke 9:23-24).
The cross is more readily embraced by people of faith who suffer, are poor, broken, or are the victims of such things as
violence, oppression or natural disasters. They see the cross as the hope that no matter what has happened to them, God
will see them through. The Father did it for Jesus who hung on the cross, so surely their sufferings will be redeemed by
Jesus’ sufferings.
Where people possess much material abundance, comfort and leisure, however, there is a tendency to de-emphasize the
cross, to draw away from it. They can’t touch it or feel it so they wish to “save” their lives by looking to other things:
power, wealth, fame, relevance, being the center of attention. What is preached about the cross from the pulpit sounds
good, but in reality something more tangible is desired.
Christ emptied himself completely in humble obedience, allowing himself to suffer and die out of
compassion for the world (Philippians 2:6-11). Good stewards follow his example and work day-to-day
to empty themselves and live compassionately; most noticeably by sharing their lives with others.

purposes of growing fresh produce and herbs (with the
help of Mrs. Beth Ricciardi and the students of St. Peter’s
School!). These fresh vegetables are for the BENEFIT
OUR OUTREACH FAMILIES.

How to identify and assist a victim of human trafficking.
These are some red flags:
• Seems anxious, fearful or paranoid. Avoids eye contact.
• Tearfulness or signs of depression.
• Unexplained bruises or cuts or other signs of physical abuse.
• Appears to be in a relationship with someone who is dominating.
• Never is alone and/or always has someone translating or
answering questions on their behalf.
• Not in control of their own finances.
• Presents with secrecy or unable to answer questions about
where they live.
• Inconsistent details when telling their story.
• Has no identification such as a license, passport or other ID
documents.
• Inability to leave their job or residence. Says they cannot
schedule appointments.
• Being a recent arrival to the United States and does not
speak English.
• Is under 18 and providing commercial sex acts. Or at any
age unwillingly providing commercial sex acts.
• Is afraid of law enforcement or receiving help from an outside entity. More information to follow next week… stay

Lloroso o signos de depresión.
Moretones o cortaduras u otras señales de abuso físico.

Nunca está solo y/o siempre tiene a alguien traducir o responder a las preguntas en su nombre.
No se encuentra en el control de sus propias finanzas.
Se presenta con confidencialidad o no puede responder a
preguntas sobre el lugar donde viven.
Detalles inconsistentes al contar su historia.
No tiene identificación, como una licencia, pasaporte u otros
documentos de identificación.
Incapacidad para dejar su puesto de trabajo o residencia.
Dice que no pueden programar citas.

Catholic League Annual Communion Breakfast
Magnificat, a Ministry to Catholic Women

Pisegna, is a Passionist Priest who hosts his own TV show,
has authored many books, and travels the country giving

The Long Island Chapter of the Catholic League will hold
its annual Communion Breakfast on Sunday, May 4th at
Kellenberg Memorial HS in Uniondale. Mass at 9:30 am,
followed by breakfast in the cafeteria. Jesuit Fr. Joseph
Koterski, a Philosophy Professor at Fordham University,
will be the key speaker. He has done wide research into
many problems facing our culture and our Church. Tickets
