3- ⁄4 lbs. fresh blackberries
4-½ cups brown sugar
5 cups sugar
2 tbsp. salt
7-½ cups water
1-½ tbsp. ginger
1 tbsp. allspice
½ tbsp. cloves

Combine all ingredients together in sauce pan, stir. Bring to a boil and reduce heat
to simmer. Reduce by half. Remove from heat and let cool, strain.

Christopher Dawson, winner of the
2011 Nisqually Red Wind Casino
Manager of the Year Award, has been
working at Red Wind for almost 10
years. He started as a security officer
working the graveyard shift. Since
then, Christopher worked his way up
to supervisor within a year, assistant
manager three years ago, and to his
current position as Security Manager
in June of 2011.
Christopher originally hails from
Stanford, Connecticut, and moved
to Florida when he was 15. He later
joined the US Air Force and served
for eight years. He met his wife,
Mi’kel, while stationed in England.
Christopher and Mi’kel moved here
to Washington and have been here
for almost 10 years. They have been
married for more than 16 years and
they both work at the casino. They
have two beautiful daughters, ages
15 and 10.
On the night Christopher was named
the 2011 Manager of the Year, there
was a power outage during the awards
ceremony. The lights went off, and
it was complete and total darkness
in the room. Proceeding with the

went ahead and
announced the
winner. “I think they
called your name,” Christopher’s wife
whispered to him. He says that he was
very surprised. With everyone using
the lights from their cell phones to
make a lighted pathway, Christopher
was able to make it to the front of the
room to accept his award.
On winning his award, Christopher
“would say what it means most is that
integrity, dedication, and loyalty are
valued by the casino management
staff. I have had the privilege of
working with many high quality
people and I see this award more as
a reflection of a joint effort by myself
and the security staff rather than as
an individual achievement.”
Christopher adheres to a simple
philosophy: “Do the best that you
can to make any situation better
than when you arrived, regardless
of your position.” Congratulations,
Christopher, on a job well done.

They say that good things come
in pairs, and that is certainly the
case with Chico and Rosa. Married
47 years, Chico and Rosa have
three children, who are all college
graduates, and 10 grandchildren.
They have lived in Tacoma for over
50 years. Rosa’s father was in the
military and stationed at Fort Lewis.
Chico and Rosa have been playing
here at Red Wind since it was a bingo
hall back in the day. Rosa has won a
couple of jackpots over the years on
Cleopatra, but her most significant
win was recently when she won
$12,000 on Meltdown. She had just
come back from Florida after a visit
with her daughter. While there, Rosa
played at the Hard Rock Casino in
Hollywood, Florida and won four
little jackpots, but she was missing
her favorite machine, Meltdown,
back home at Red Wind. She was
thinking about her daughter and how
she would like to help her during a
difficult time and that was when the
machine hit. Rosa was very surprised
and thrilled.
Rosa’s husband, Chico, says that when
he won his $1,556 jackpot a week later

Lucky Lava
on Wild Leopard, he was thinking it
was about time his investments paid
off! Chico is a retired educator with
a great sense of humor. When asked
what they are going to do with their
winnings, Rosa says they will give
half to their kids, pay bills and put the
rest into the bank. Chico says the kids
are all grown now, so he’s planning on
spending their inheritance. Speaking
for Chico and Rosa’s children, we
hope that he was just kidding.
Congratulations to Chico and Rosa on
their couples jackpots and on being
such a delightful couple. We look
forward to seeing them, along with all
of our other guests, on their next visit
to Nisqually Red Wind Casino.
