The Olympic National Forest
Sequim is the northern gate to Olympic National Forest
(ONF). Within the dense forest you will find high mountain meadows sprinkled with wildflowers. Deep, clear
mountain lakes full of trout are scattered throughout the
high country. Trails lead to sweeping vistas of sites such
as downtown Seattle, Hood Canal, Mt. Baker, Mt. Rainer
and the San Juan Islands. Sequim is located between two
major trailheads, Gray Wolf and Dungeness. In addition, you can access ONF’s Buckhorn Wilderness, which
is known by locals as the backdoor to Olympic National
Park (ONP).
A pass is required to park your automobile at
trailheads. Passes can be purchased at the Sequim Visitor Center, located on the east end of town at 1192 E.
Washington St. While at the center, pick up free guides to
learn more about camping, hiking and other recreational
opportunities. Visit www.fs.fed.us/r6/olympic for more
information.
We get less rain than our eastern and western
neighbors due to the Rain Shadow provided by the
Olympic Mountains. From afar, you can often see a
“blue hole” over sunny Sequim.
See page 13 for a 5-Day Trip Planner. It has great suggestions for activities in and around Sequim.

A rich local bounty…
Farms have been part of the Sequim landscape for
over a hundred years. Working dairies, alpaca farms, organic vegetable farms and colorful fields featuring every
flower imaginable can be found throughout Sequim. We
are renowned for our lavender and prize-winning berry
crops. Several farms offer tours, U-pick and allow the
public to participate in activities throughout the seasons.
Lavender
There’s a distinctive smell of lavender throughout the
Sequim-Dungeness Valley, especially during the summer
months. The valley features the most ideal conditions for
growing lavender in the U.S. Sequim’s climate is similar to
the famous lavender growing region of Provence, France.
Sequim Lavender Festival® and
Sequim Lavender Farm Faire™
In 1995, Sequim farmers began experimenting with
lavender in an attempt to save local farmland and open
space from development. By 1996, a few lavender farm
owners brought their products to the summer Sequim
Open Aire Market, where they had their first lavender
festival. Farmers demonstrated uses for the herb and sold
lavender bundles and products crafted using lavender.
From this humble beginning, the Sequim Lavender Festival grew into one of the premier festivals in the North-
Wineries have been producing distinctive vintages
on the Olympic Peninsula for more than 25 years. Olympic Cellars Winery in Sequim is open for tasting year
round. They host numerous fun events at their own winery and in collaboration with other Peninsula wineries.
The Lavender Capital of North America
With over 30 lavender farms, Sequim has the highest
concentration of lavender farms in North America.
west. The festival is always held on the third weekend
in July and attracts thousands of lavender lovers. Visitors
can tour farms and pick their own lavender, attend the
downtown street fair and Lavender in the Park and enjoy
music and great food all weekend.
A Growing Success
The valley now boasts more than 30 farms containing
over 160,000 plants combined. Some farms grow lavender
purely for oil, while others specialize in floral bundles,
sachets, beauty-related products or culinary delights.
Open to the Public!
During the summer, many farms are open to the public
for U-pick. Several feature stores offering everything
from lavender sachets to ice cream. Farm location, topography, the type of lavender grown and the owner’s style
make visiting each farm a unique experience.

Walking, biking and running are always more enjoyable
when you have beautiful scenery to keep you company.
The Olympic Discovery Trail between Sequim and Port
Angeles provides some of the most breathtaking, scenic
views on the North Olympic Peninsula.
The 25+ mile-long section of trail contains wellpacked composite or paved trail. The trail meanders
through green valleys and across creeks with views of the

Olympic Mountains to the south and the Strait of Juan
de Fuca to the north. You can bike, hike, walk or even
horseback ride (through select sections) through wooded
areas and pastureland.
The trail will eventually travel 100 miles—from
Port Townsend to Lake Ozette on the Pacific Coast. Since
the trail is ever changing, visitors are encouraged to come
back to use new sections.

• The current starting point of the trail is in Blyn, by the Seven Cedars
Casino. Don’t miss the Johnson Creek trestle near John Wayne Marina.
The 410-foot-long trestle rests 100 feet above Johnson Creek and was
refitted for trail use by Peninsula Trails Coalition volunteers.
• Enjoy three of Sequim’s beautiful parks along the trail, off Blake Ave.
Carrie Blake Park is home to the Guy Cole mini-convention center,
ponds inhabited by ducks, public picnic areas and a wonderful children’s
playground. Next to Carrie Blake Park is Shiso Sister City Park, which
features a pond containing a small island with a giant Japanese Peace
lantern. The lantern symbolizes the friendship between the people of
Shiso City (formerly Yamasaki) and the people of Sequim.
The adjacent Water Reuse Demonstration Site* received a state
Environmental Excellence Award. The park features native vegetation, an
interpretive center, a band shell for concerts, a fountain and a small pond
for radio-controlled boats racing in mini-regattas. Parking available.
• To learn more about the area’s bird populations, stop by Railroad Bridge
Park. The railroad trestle was saved by volunteer efforts for access to the

Dungeness River and now provides a wonderful place to view wildlife.
Parking available. • www.dungenessrivercenter.org
• Stop by Robin Hill County Park, located at the halfway mark between
Port Angeles and Sequim. The park can provide a wonderful stopping
place or a day full of adventure. A trail system, picnic areas and interpretive signs are some of the highlights of the park. Parking available.
• For a spectacular view of the Olympic Mountains overlooking Morris
Creek be sure to stop at Deer Park Gateway. This is one of the best
places to view fall foliage in the area.
• Enjoy venturing over Morse Creek Trestle. This trestle is also a
volunteer-refitted trestle. Parking available.
• When you approach the Morse Creek parking lot, the trail becomes the
Port Angeles Waterfront Trail. It runs along the shore of the Strait of
Juan de Fuca and follows the Port Angeles waterfront past the Arthur
D. Fiero Marine Life Center, the Port Angeles Visitors Center and the
ferries to Victoria, British Columbia.
• The trail currently ends at the U.S. Coast Guard Station on Ediz Hook.

See the wildlife…
Sequim is home to a rich array of wild creatures. Go
birding along the shore or keep a lookout for the local
elk. The Olympic Game Farm is also a fun visit for
the whole family. Don’t forget to bring your camera!
Elk Crossing signal lights on Hwy. 101 are triggered
by herd members wearing transmitting radio collars.
Sequim Elk Herd
Roosevelt elk are native to the Olympic Peninsula. One
herd comprised of about 100 animals, consider the
Sequim area part of their range. When not in the forest,
they graze in farm fields and lawns. Although the Sequim
elk herd appears to be tame, they are not. Normally, they
avoid close contact with people and move away when
approached. However, they may show signs of agitation if
people get too close, throw things, or when people or cars
block what they consider to be an escape route. Caution
should be used at all times when viewing the herd.
Since elk roam over a wide area, and split into
smaller sub-herds much of the year, it can be difficult to
know where they may be viewed. Favorite spots seem to
be along Happy Valley Road and surrounding hills, West
Sequim Bay Road, Palo Alto Road and north toward Port
Williams Road. • www.visitsun.com/elk.html

Birdwatching at the Spit
Sequim is located on one of North America’s biggest
flyways making it an ideal spot for bird watching. More
than 250 species of birds have been spotted soaring above
the Dungeness Valley or fishing in the area’s waterways.
The Dungeness River Audubon Center is located within
Sequim to help collect information and educate the
public about birds. For a map of good birding spots
contact Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society located at
Railroad Bridge Park, 2151 West Hendrickson Road (360681-4076 • www.dungenessrivercenter.org) or stop by the
Visitor Center at 1192 E. Washington Street.
Olympic Game Farm
The Olympic Game farm is a wonderful opportunity to
get a close look at both endangered and non-endangered
animal species, including grizzlies, black bears, lions,
zebras and many others. The farm also features a few
world-famous animal actors.
As you drive through, many animals will come right
up to your window—a very unique experience! Located
at 1423 Ward Rd. Visit www.olygamefarm.com to learn

Climate
Due to our unique location in the “rain shadow” of the
Olympic Mountains, the weather in Sequim is noticeably nicer than the rest of the area. This “rain shadow”
and mild temperatures have made Sequim a very popular
retirement and recreation area, and tourist destination.
Many microclimates mean “Dress for any weather!”
On the same day, you can experience semi-arid
conditions in Sequim, be drenched in the Hoh
Rainforest, or trudge through mountain snow.

Port Townsend: Ever visited a “Victorian” seaport? Port Townsend
can be reached in about 45 minutes by traveling east on U.S. Highway
101, then turning left onto Highway 20. The town has an easy-going, artsy
ambiance. The state ferry terminal to Whidbey Island is located here.
Port Angeles: Travel 17 miles west to Port Angeles. The city is the
gateway to Olympic National Park and Victoria, British Columbia. Port Angeles
Harbor, a naturally deep port, attracts ships from throughout the world. Stroll
the waterfront trail, collect seashells on Ediz Hook or learn more about Clallam
County’s history by visiting the Museum at the Carnegie, 205 S. Lincoln St.
Victoria B.C., Canada: Hop aboard the
Victoria Express, a passenger-only fast ferry, or
the M.V. Coho, an auto/passenger ferry, to travel to
Canada. The ferries provide easy day trip access to
our friendly “foreign” neighbor. You can also catch a
convenient ferry to the San Juan Islands. Check ferry
web sites for up-to-date information on schedules,

The Hoh Rain Forest: Roosevelt elk wander
among giant, moss-draped trees as you stroll
fern-lined trails of Olympic National Park’s Hoh Rain
Forest. It is the largest rain forest in the continental U.S. receiving an astounding 12–14 feet of
rain annually. Century-old trees reach 300 feet and measure more than
20 feet in circumference. Drive time from Sequim is
about 2 hours including a beautiful drive along Lake
Crescent. A few more miles south on Hwy. 101, see
the rugged Olympic coastline with its numerous
beaches to stroll and fish.
Forks, the land of Twilight: In addition
to the Hoh Rain Forest, Twilight fans can visit story
locations including Forks High School. Organized
and self-guided tours available.

Please contact the Visitor Information Center at 1-800-737-8462 or (360) 683-6197 for more information regarding other farms.
Other enjoyable walks:
1. Railroad Bridge Park has a decked railroad trestle that spans the Dungeness
River. There’s a lovely picnic area and easy access to the river. The Dungeness River
Audubon Center is within the park.
2. For a view of impressive sand cliffs and seabirds, stop at Marlyn Nelson County
Park at Port Williams. The park, which features a public
boat launch, is located at the east end of Port Williams Rd.
These are just a few of the many things to see and do
in the Sequim area. Stop at the Visitor Center for more
information. We hope you can enjoy them all!
There is an admission fee to the national park (Hurricane
Ridge, etc.). Don’t lose that ticket! It is valid for 7 days and you can use it to get into
the other entrances to the park—for instance, the Hoh Rain Forest.
Day Three:
Birding, Kayaking, Biking – Bicyclists of all skill levels will find
the Sequim Valley is a great place to enjoy a road or
mountain bike ride. The wide and long valley has gentle
hills featuring views of the Olympic Mountains and the
Strait of Juan de Fuca. Generally, area roads are wide with good shoulders and are
not overcrowded with other bicycles or autos. The temperate weather allows cyclists to enjoy year-round cycling opportunities. Mountain bikers will find Olympic
National Forest and state Department of Natural Resources roads and trails
provide a great place to test their skills. The Olympic Discovery Trail (see page
5) winds through the Dungeness Valley from Sequim to Port Angeles. Please visit
www.mikes-bikes.net for more information about biking in the area.
The visit to the Dungeness Spit requires a small fee which
is used by Fish & Wildlife to provide a healthy wildlife refuge for migrating birds.
Day One:
Take a hike! - For a truly unique nature walk, head
to the Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge and view
the Dungeness Spit — the longest natural sand spit
in the nation. If the tide permits, stroll 5.5 miles (one
way) to the end of the Spit to the New Dungeness
Light Station, built in 1857. Take a snack and bottled
water with you and enjoy a beautiful view of the Strait
of Juan de Fuca from a picnic table or a piece of driftwood. from the Lighthouse
Society volunteers will be happy to show you around. If the 11-mile roundtrip trek
to the lighthouse is too much, you can still enjoy strolling the spit to take in the
breathtaking view, with its waves, driftwood and marine life.
After visiting the Spit, continue exploring the area by strolling along the Olympic
Discovery Trail, located between White Feather Way and Port Angeles (see Page
5). Or soothe your tired legs with a relaxing soak in the whirlpool at Sequim’s
Aquatic Recreation Center (SARC) on 5th Ave. In addition to these suggested
treks, Sequim features three year-round volkssport walks. Maps for the walks
can be found at Swain’s Outdoor, located at 551 W. Washington St. and at the
Sequim Visitor Center.
If you love to kayak, grab your paddle and head to Dungeness Spit or Sequim Bay.
Calm waters, intriguing inlets and abundant marine life are waiting for you. You’re
likely to see harbor seals fishing or just basking in the sun. Stop at the Dungeness
lighthouse to stretch your legs, take a picture or enjoy a picnic lunch. Landings
are easy, but are limited in number by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. To make
arrangements, contact 360-457-8451 or visit www.dungenesskayaking.com.
Sequim is located on one of North America’s biggest flyways making it an ideal
spot for bird watching. See page 7 for more about birding in Sequim.
Day Four:
Explore Olympic National Forest – For
a true taste of just how rugged Sequim is, visit Olympic National Forest. Sequim
is located between two main trailheads: the Gray Wolf and the Dungeness trails.
Before heading out, stop at the Sequim Visitor Center to purchase the required
day-hike parking pass. Drive along Palo Alto or Louella roads for about 8.1 miles
to reach the Dungeness Trail. For the Gray Wolf trailhead, travel about 7.7 miles
along Taylor Cutoff and Lost Mountain roads. Both trails provide enjoyable easy
hikes. Olympic National Forest officials allow mountain bikes on several trails. To
learn more about biking trails see the detailed map at
the Sequim Visitor Center.
Day Five:
Olympic National
Park’s Hurricane Ridge - During your entire
visit to Sequim, the Olympic Mountains have provided a
beautiful backdrop. Now, it is time to enjoy a view from
the top. Start your day by driving west along U.S. Highway 101 to nearby Port Angeles. Hurricane Ridge is located about 17 miles from
Port Angeles and is considered the crown jewel of Olympic National Park. Sunrises
and sunsets are particularly beautiful at the Ridge. Even if it is sunny and clear in
Sequim, be sure to call the Olympic National Park Visitor Center to check weather
conditions above the clouds. Driving time, starting at the Sequim Visitor Center, is
about 1 hour and 45 minutes to reach the 5,200-foot elevation Hurricane Ridge.

Sequim & Savor Local Flavors – There’s
no better way to get to know Sequim than spending
the day shopping around town. Unique gift stores are
within walking distance from the center of town at
Sequim Ave. and Washington St. Drive a few blocks east
or west from there and you’ll find more shopping. Take
a break and dine at one of the dozens of restaurants offering traditional American
favorites to exquisite international flavors. Fresh espresso, wine and artisan bread
shops abound. Then stop at the Museum & Arts Center, 175 W. Cedar St., to view
historical exhibits, art and a display of a mastodon discovered locally. On Saturdays, downtown also features the Sequim Open Air Market where local growers
sell fresh produce and artisans sell handcrafted wares.

Day Two: Tour Downtown

Origianl art: Cory & Catska Ench
Fun for the Family – Kids young and old love
a day touring the local farms. Discover how generations of farmers have used
Sequim’s fertile soil to grow delicious organic vegetables, create colorful flower
fields and make Sequim the “Lavender Capital of North America.” Stroll through
organic vegetable fields, tour an alpaca ranch, pick a fragrant bouquet or gather
raspberries, strawberries, blackberries and blueberries.

5. Learn Local Lore
Sequim has a rich history, from the
traditions of the local S’Klallam tribe
to the agricultural heritage of early settlers. The downtown Sequim Museum
and Arts Center is a great resource for
discovering more about local history, including the mastadons which once roamed this area. • www.macsequim.org
This 35-acre park on Sequim’s east side has it all. Bring
your kite, have a picnic or let the kids run in the playground. The dog park provides a spacious, fenced place
for dogs to play. Stroll the paths of the beautiful Friendship Garden, a work of art created by the Shiso City
(formerly Yamasaki) Sister City Association. The Re-Use
Demonstration Site* is a favorite for radio-controlled boat
enthusiasts. There’s also a band shell featuring live performances (and movies) during the summer and demonstration gardens created by the Master Gardeners.
8. Take a Scenic Drive
Another great way to see the best scenery in the SequimDungeness Valley, this self-directed drive tour is marked
by signs. To begin from Highway 101, go north at Sequim
