Michelle Rhodes, Trips & Program Director
Happy New Year!!! I hope your holidays
were full of happiness and cheer!
Our trips in January have been very
popular, and are filling up quickly! Don’t
miss your chance to go shopping, see
some weaving history and get a spot of tea!
Don’t forget we are going to Clearwater
Casino every 3rd Wednesday now!
For the garden and flower lovers out there,
you will see for February that we will be
going to the NW Flower and Garden show
in Seattle! Also, we will be going to
Peninsula College’s Maier Hall Concert
Series. It will be featuring Wood’N’Flutes Medieval melodies, Baroque sonatas, and
tone paintings from the 20th and 21st
centuries as part of the musical fare of
Denmark’s Wood'N'Flutes recorder trio.
The three musicians―Vicki Boeckman,
Gertie Johnsson and Pia Brinch
Jensen―have been performing together in
Europe since 1999 and made their
American debut in 2003.
Also, for those of you who are interested in
the Jersey Boys show in May of 2013, the
date was changed to May 2nd! (Sorry the
5th Avenue failed to communicate this to
me prior to the last newsletter!) As of the
print deadline there are still a few spots
left, so don’t delay, this is a wonderful
show!
Take a look at the back of the blue insert
this month for our regional/overnight trips
for 2013! Our calendar is filling up fast!!!
Thanks! Michelle

JANUARY 2013
By Michael Smith
Executive Director
By the time you read this, the papers may have published a photo of Clallam County’s
first baby of the New Year, 2013. I am sure you want to join me in wishing those parents
the best as they face the task ahead of raising a new one in today’s world. Congrats,
parents!
At the other end of the spectrum, the oldest person in the world, Bessie Cooper of
Monroe, Georgia, recently died at age 116 years and 100 days. The new oldest living
person is Dina Manfredini, 115, of Johnston, Iowa. Our New Year baby’s challenges are
just beginning, and the 116-year-old is finally at rest after a full and active life.
We are all part of this thing called the human “race”. Some of us run it, some walk it,
and others just endure it. Some of us smile and brighten others’ paths along the way, and
some of us complain and fight at every step. Where do you fit in? How is your “race”
going lately?
Your Sequim Senior Activity Center (SSAC) is ready to keep up the pace of 2012 right
into 2013. In fact, we intend to pick up the pace a bit, with even more activities, classes,
and fun!
I want to thank our board members who just finished their terms, and I look forward to
working with our newly elected board members to make 2013 the best ever.
Will you join me in some suggested New Year’s resolutions for 2013?
1. I resolve to be more connected with others by participating in more activities that get
me out of the house, and meeting old and new friends.
2. I resolve that I will share my time and talents to help out at the Senior Activity Center
to truly enable others to have a great 2013.
3. I resolve to do my part to alleviate loneliness and depression by making at least one
new friend a month through my interactions at SSAC.
4. I resolve to explore transportation, insurance, healthcare, and other options available
to me as a senior by making my needs known and looking for the resources that are
out there to meet them. (If you need help finding resources, contact us, or call Senior
Information and Assistance, at 452-3221.)
5. I resolve to remember Sequim Senior Activity Center in my 2013 charitable giving and
estate planning, so that it may continue its good work until I am 116, and onward
until my children are 116!
6. I resolve to connect with at least one child or teenager outside of my family by
learning their name and greeting them as they run or skateboard by. I want to help
younger generations know they are noticed, appreciated, and loved.
These are just some suggestions, but following them could actually make us live
longer. Studies have shown that those that are active in their connections with others
have more meaning and purpose in their lives, and live longer because of it.
For 2013, let’s think young, and try to be wide-eyed, alive, and rarin’ to go. So, Go,
baby, GO! On down to your Sequim Senior Activity Center! Happy New Year!
Michael

Bunco was originally played in 18th century England where it
was known as "8-Dice cloth".
It was imported to San Francisco as a gambling activity in 1855,
where it gave its name to gambling dens, or "Bunco parlors", and
more generally to any swindle.
After the Civil War, the game evolved into a popular parlor game.
During the 1920s and Prohibition, Bunco
was re-popularized as a gambling game,
often associated with a speakeasy.
Law-enforcement groups raiding these
establishments came to be known as
"Bunco squads".
regularly in 2006.
According to the World Bunco
Association the game had seen a
resurgence in popularity in the United
States in the early 21st century, with a
reported 27 million people playing
As it is played today, Bunco is a social dice game involving
100% luck and no skill.
Come try your luck with us on 2nd and 4th Tuesdays at 1:00!

A New Year’s Prayer
Dear Lord;
So far this year I've
done well.
I haven't gossiped, I
haven't lost my
temper, I haven't been
greedy, grumpy, nasty,
selfish, or over
indulgent. I'm very
thankful for that.
But in a few minutes,
Lord, I'm going to get
out of bed, and from
then on I'm probably
going to need a lot
more help.
Amen

DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM
Washington State University Extension is offering
a Road to Health, the National Diabetes
Prevention Program. The program is based on
the Diabetes Prevention Program research study
led by the National Institutes of Health and
supported by Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention.
The Diabetes Prevention Program is a 16-week
class, followed by monthly meetings to complete
the year, for people with pre-diabetes. It is
effective in helping people lose 5–7 percent body
weight and increasing physical activity needed to
delay diabetes. Three and ten-year follow-up
studies have shown those who participated
continue to delay the development of diabetes.
Classes are scheduled to start Wednesday
January 23, 6:30 pm at the Sequim Transit
Center 190 West Cedar, Sequim. Fee: $65 to
cover costs of materials.
For more information contact Shirley Calodich
MPH RD CD at 360-379-5610, ext. 200 or

Knitting/Crochet Group meets
on Mondays. 10 am - Noon
The group donates handmade walker bags
and lap robes to Discovery Memory Care.
Instructors:
Judy Lange,
Leslie Menia and
Therese Simons
I am privileged to be part of this
amazing group of women and men
(Andy Nilles, 92 years old, crochets lap
robes and hats!).
The group was started about 7 years
ago because two women wanted to
learn to knit. Now we have both those
who knit and crochet with various levels of
experience. If you are just learning or are an expert you are
welcome. After all, we all have things to teach and learn!
We not only get together to make items for our friends and
family, in 2012 our group donated 320 hats to chemo patients
at Sequim’s Cancer Center, many sweaters, scarves, hats and
gloves to Sequim Community Aid, and numerous blankets for
local veterans. Items are also available for sale at The Center
to benefit the many activities at The Center.
If you are like me, new to Sequim and knitting, there is no
better place to be on Monday mornings from 10am - 12 noon!
Are you part of a group or activity that is doing something fun and wonderful? Here is your chance to
brag! Send your photos with a 150 word (or less) description to Michelle at [email protected].

DECEMBER BOARD MEETING HIGHLIGHTS
Roy Hellwig of Tormod Hellwig, a Sequim architectural firm, has been selected to do the
initial design work for our new Center, including floor plan, elevations, site plan, and
presentation materials. The board unanimously accepted this recommendation by the
Building Design Committee. Mr. Hellwig has done numerous large projects for the
Jamestown Tribe and other prominent clients in the area. He also has engineering
expertise and creativity that the board was impressed with.
The Trips and Tours Department, under direction of Michelle Rhodes, reported many
happy travelers in recent weeks, and that all her trips made enough money to cover
expenses of the department and the operation of the bus.
The Center’s operating budget for 2013 was approved in the amount of $355,736, an
increase of $24,028, or 7.24% over 2012, due to increased costs of staffing, employee
benefits, utilities, building maintenance, and fuel.
Executive Director Michael Smith reported that he is sending out an end-of-the-year
fundraising letter, but that people are welcome to donate well into the new year, especially
if that is more advantageous to them tax-wise.

SPOTLIGHT
By Patty Selaya
Along with the reports and election
results at this year's annual meeting was
the news that our friend and office
manager, Diane Johnston had resigned
due to health problems. Although she has
had a rough summer, I am happy to report
that she is following her doctor's orders to
rest and recuperate and is feeling better
daily. This is no
surprise to anyone
who knows Diane, a
feisty little lady who
has faced tough
times, tragic loss,
cancer and is still
here - a true
survivor and
testament to her
Irish heritage.
We know Diane will survive, but what
about the rest of us? The front desk
volunteers and office staff have done an
admirable job of covering Diane's
absence, but it hasn't been easy. I could
write the clichés "no one can fill her shoes,
she's irreplaceable, what will we do
without her?" But, the fact is everyone can
be replaced...including Diane. However, it
will never be the same without her. For
seven years she has been the heart of the
front office - cheerful, patient, always
quick to laugh - and the real secret to her
success, a never empty candy dish.
Regretfully, it is time for a changing of the
guard. Diane, we miss you and wish you
love and best wishes for good health and
happiness. To the "new
guard," welcome, we
wish you a smooth
transition into the new
job and much success.
Just don't forget
the candy.
STONE
TWO FRIENDS WERE WALKING
THROUGH THE DESERT.
DURING SOME POINT OF THE
JOURNEY; THEY HAD AN
ARGUMENT; AND ONE FRIEND
SLAPPED THE OTHER ONE
IN THE FACE
THE ONE WHO GOT SLAPPED
WAS HURT, BUT WITHOUT
SAYING ANYTHING,
WROTE IN THE SAND,
‘TODAY MY BEST FRIEND
SLAPPED ME IN THE FACE’
THEY KEPT ON WALKING,
UNTIL THEY FOUND AN OASIS,
WHERE THEY DECIDED
TO TAKE A BATH.
THE ONE WHO HAD BEEN
SLAPPED GOT STUCK IN THE
MIRE AND STARTED DROWNING,
BUT THE FRIEND SAVED HIM.
AFTER HE RECOVERED FROM
THE NEAR DROWNING,
HE WROTE ON A STONE:
'TODAY MY BEST FRIEND
SAVED MY LIFE'
THE FRIEND WHO HAD SLAPPED
AND SAVED HIS BEST FRIEND
ASKED HIM, 'AFTER I HURT YOU,
YOU WROTE IN THE SAND AND NOW,
YOU WRITE ON A STONE, WHY?'
THE FRIEND REPLIED
'WHEN SOMEONE HURTS US
WE SHOULD WRITE IT DOWN
IN SAND, WHERE WINDS OF
FORGIVENESS CAN ERASE IT AWAY.
BUT, WHEN SOMEONE DOES
SOMETHING GOOD FOR US,
WE MUST ENGRAVE IT IN STONE
WHERE NO WIND CAN EVER ERASE IT'
LEARN TO WRITE YOUR HURTS IN
THE SAND AND TO
CARVE YOUR BLESSINGS IN STONE.

BILL OF THE MONTH
Plumbing
Several plumbing needs have come up.
Joe Borden
Board VP
The pressure relief valve on
one of our water heaters
would not reset correctly after
an inspection and had to be
replaced. During this process,
it was determined that the
pressure in our pipes was over
100psi (pounds per square
inch). Is that high, you ask? Yes, the
pressure should really only be about 50 or
60 psi. Further inspection revealed that
our pressure reduction valve was not
working properly, and
that a new one had to
be installed. This
involved a hole being
dug near our meter,
requiring several
hours of labor.
After fixing a sink, the
water heater, and the pressure reduction
valve, we found we had spent over $700
with our friendly local plumber! If you
would like to help with our “bill of the
month”, just make a donation to our
general fund, and put “maintenance” in the
memo section.
Thanks for your support!
