Van Denton
Chief Meteorologist
WGHPFox8
Van Denton came to
WGHP-TV 26 years ago after
working in New Bern and
Myrtle Beach. For six of these years, he worked
with the late Frank Deal and did team weather
with Frank at 5:30 pm. Frank was with WGHP
from 1969 until 1996. There have only been two
Chief Meteorologists at WGHP since 1969. Not
too many stations have that kind of stability.
Van earned his Bachelor of Science Degree
in Meteorology from North Carolina State
University in 1987 and received the AMS TV
Seal of Approval shortly after.
He is a five-time Emmy Nominee for Best
Weather in the Mid-South region of the United
States. In 2015, Van was voted “America’s
Favorite Weathercaster” in the Weatherist.com
poll of more than 600 weather people in 45 of
the largest TV markets in the United States.
He has been voted Best Meteorologist in the
Triad by several publications.
In 1997, he started a weather segment
called Van’s Weather Kids and in 1999 gave
a presentation to the national American
Meteorological Society (AMS) Broadcast

Rotary Leaders in Training –
Bobby and Lori’s Excellent
Adventure, Part Four
The 2016 Carolinas’ President-Elects Training
Session (PETS) was held in Greensboro from March
17 through March 19. President-Elect Bobby Bain
and President-Designee Lori Haddock attended for
Greensboro Rotary.
PETS is an intense and comprehensive three-day
training session for incoming Rotary leaders and is
also a good window on what’s going on in the Rotary
world. Bobby has written an excellent summary
of what he and Lori learned. This is the third of a
series of articles on their experience at PETS.
Our own Ken Keller, an Assistant District
Governor, is leading the RUSH (Rotarians Unite to
Stop Hunger) program for our district. This program
will kick off on August 7, 2016 at the Grasshoppers
game in Greensboro. Rotary International President
John Germ will throw out the first pitch. The next
day, President Germ will attend the first ever RUSH
project. All area clubs in district 7690 will submit
proposals to Jon Spillman by April 29, 2016. He will
then select one to run with.
In summary, PETS is a fabulous training
experience. It’s amazing to me that so many
Rotarians devote an enormous amount of time to
Rotary long after they have served out their year as
president of their club. There were over 550 people
at PETS this year.
Some members of our club volunteer for every
project we do. Some members simply come to
meetings for fellowship and seldom volunteer for
anything. Some members pay dues and don’t come
to meetings or volunteer. Some members want to
“do good all over the world” while others only want
to help with local needs. We need and welcome all
these members. We all have families, jobs, church
responsibilities, and other civic organizations that
demand our time. All I hope for is that you devote
a sufficient amount of time to our Rotary Club to
make your membership really meaningful.

Conference on the Weather Kids program. After
this presentation, many other stations around the
country began the segment, too. This program
had been a dream for Van since he visited a
station when he was 15 years old. This program
has been nominated for two Emmy Awards.
Van credits two people for inspiring him
in his career: the late Skip Waters at WCTI in
New Bern, where he interned and got his first
job as a TV meteorologist; and Frank Deal,
with whom he remained good friends until
Frank’s passing in 2010.
Van anchors the weather for WGHP,
Monday-Friday from 4 -7pm and 10-11pm.
