A Message from Marian Thank you everyone for a wonderful year! We met the goals the WAC Board of Directors set for
this year and then some! I would like to especially like to thank Board members 1st VP Harold
Nuoffer and 3rd VP Fred Fleck for their contributions and all the hard work they put into to making
WAC a better organization over the past few years. They are retiring from the Board of Officers.
We will be voting in our new Board Members for 2015 at our Christmas Potluck on December
8th. All of us are looking forward to an enjoyable evening with good conversation and a nice
dinner. We sincerely hope you can join us. Sign up on the kitchen table to bring your salad,
appetizer, or dessert, or call Micki Strickland to help out.

Artwork of the Month
All eight art entries at the WAC regular monthly meeting were two-dimensional and were of a
wide variety of mediums. First place was earned by Dale Keiser’s digital air brush painting
“Blossoms”. The painting is now on display in the
club’s gallery.

The Demonstration at Our General Meeting
At the November General Meeting, the Photography Group panel, led by Donna Drake, gave us a
primer on what we all can do to improve our photography. Whether you are an avid
photographer, or still have trouble remembering not to put your finger in front of the lens, we can
all take really nice photos. No matter if you use your cell phone or the latest professional gear,
remember that it’s the “artist’s eye” that can make your photos exceptional!

Consider the light source. Learn to love cloudy days for the diffuse overall light, but don’t
put the sky into the picture. Avoid the harsh Arizona mid-day sun, and choose the “golden
hours” of sunrise and sunset for the colors and shadows that make a dramatic impact. If
you are doing photography in the sunshine, put the light behind your subject so you don’t
get a harsh glare.

Check out your composition. Anchor your subject (such as a landscape) with something in
the foreground. Remember the rule of thirds, the Golden mean, having foreground, middle
ground and background. Bend down low or get up high to create impact.
Consider your environment. Be patient to get the right shot, and when it comes, be quick to
act. If you are doing wildlife photography, understand what the animals are thinking, what
their habits are and then anticipate their next moves to be there when they are. When
focusing, make sure that the subject’s eyes are in sharp focus – that tells the story to your
audience.
Look beyond and around your subject. Avoid mysterious things sticking out of your
subject’s head by moving slightly to either side. Look at the edges of your frame for
unwanted objects, and then either move or zoom in or step closer to fill the frame with
your subject.
Avoid “hot spots.” These occur when sunlight peeks through in some areas. Squint at the
subject you want to photograph – the “hot spots” will appear as bright or brighter points of
light. Eliminate them as best you can because they will take away from viewer’s focusing on
the subject.
Be still. Use a tripod (see article below) or hug a tree. Put your camera down on a rock or
post to steady it. Take a breath and hold it while you press the button. Rest your arm on a
ledge, wall, car or anything handy, and hold the camera closer to your body’s core.
Learn to use simple editing tools. Even smart phones have editing capabilities, such as red
eye removal, simple color correction, cropping, contrast adjustment and special effects
(like changing from color to black and white, or application of some “artistic effects.” Just
cropping a photo can eliminate unwanted items in the photograph and add impact and
attention to the subject.
Watch the weather. It’s easier to cooperate rather than compete with Mother Nature.
Use your artistic sense. The best photographs tell a story, just the way that good artworks
do. Use the artistic senses you have developed over the years and apply them to creating
your photographic works of art.
Throw out all the rules! Sometimes, the best photographs just “happen,” regardless of
however many of the “rules” are broken. The “rules” are guidelines to help you, not walls to
keep you from telling the story that YOU want to tell!

Marilyn Wiley will supply the ornaments that
we will create at our Thursday, December
4th workshop. A sign-up sheet is available in
the kitchen at the club. Marilyn will supply you
with four balls or bells, partridges or discs to
create your own masterpieces. The
balls/bells/partridges and discs will have a
variety of designs drawn on so students can
pick the ones they like. Marilyn will help you
make ornaments that are ideal for Christmas
gifts. She will also provide tools, some
brushes and glazes, and hooks
for hanging when finished. The
workshop is only $40,
including the four ornaments. Sign up now to assure your place in this fun class.
Items needed are a fine liner brush and a small round brush, size 3-5 if they have
them. Marilyn will also be bringing extra brushes and as well as the pottery and
paints.
Kelby Love Will Be Here in January!
On Thursday Jan 22, 2015 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Kelby Love will teach a workshop on painting
animals. He will also be with us on Monday January 12, 2015 at 7:30 PM to do a demonstration
after our General Meeting. The sign-up sheet is in the kitchen, or call Harold Nuoffer for more
information. This is among our most popular workshops, so sign up now!

WAC 2015 Jurying
We will be offering jurying opportunities in 2015 to coincide with our events that require jurying.
Those opportunities are tentatively set for January, April, and June/July 2015. That is one (1) more
than last year to accommodate the rising need to jury our increasing membership. Your next
opportunity will be in January 2015. The signup sheet is on the kitchen table in the Art Center. Sign
up NOW! Please be aware that being juried by the Arizona Art Alliance (AAA) no longer qualifies
you for display in our local venues, our juried required events, or our main gallery. You must be
juried by WAC. See our NEW Guidelines for jurying to see where you qualify.

From the Director of Gold Rush Days Artisans’ Fair
We're on our way to being filled up! With just 2 1/2 months until Gold Rush Days, we're sitting at
80% sold out, with only 28 spaces left!! Besides some of your old favorites, we also have quite a
few new ones like.....oh, you thought I was going to spill the beans....no way! You're just going to
have to come and see for yourself!
Speaking of which, we still have opportunities for you to get involved in the fun by volunteering in
many of the different areas, such as spelling artisans who are alone and might need a break,
hosting the WAC info booth, greeters at the Library art show and many other needed smiling faces.
Look for Linda Parker's volunteer book on the table in the kitchen.

One of the unannounced needed project chairs has been filled by Gina Hebert. If you would like to
show/sell at Gold Rush Days and aren't sure you could fill an entire booth by yourself....see Gina.
She's going to organize those three lucky people who would like to share the WAC artisans' booth.
She'll collect names until the January general meeting. At that time she'll draw for the three
participants and announce at the meeting. Please look on the table in the kitchen for a sign up.
Don't wait until the last minute....you'll potentially have 60,000 people walking past your
booth....that's quite a lot of exposure for only $85!!

A Day in the Life of Wickenburg - Submit Your Photos
Thanks to everyone who participated in "A Day in the Life of Wickenburg"! I know some great,
creative photos were taken, both iconic and sublime. Now is the time to get the photos out to the
world! Your submissions will make sure we have a brilliant show of photographs in January.
Submit your 8x10 photo along with a CD and submission form to be eligible for selection to the
exhibit. The deadline is Saturday, 12/6 and you can drop them in a box right at the Art Center.
The exhibition of some of the best and most creative photographs representing Wickenburg will
take place during the month of January in the front gallery, as well as the Friends of Music January
concert, and printed in a special edition of the Wickenburg Sun. Mark your calendar for the
Opening Reception on Saturday, January 3rd from 1:00pm - 4:00pm. Share your creative vision!


We have already received submissions! Don’t forget to turn your photos in.
Sandra Harris from the Desert Caballeros Western Museum and Jeanie Wright Hankins of
the Wickenburg Sun will be our judges on December 16th.
 Letters will go out to photographers after December 16th to let them know if their photos
have been chosen.
 The frames for the photos are already here and ready to be filled. If anyone wants to help
frame the chosen photos sometime between December 17th and 31st, please let Donna
know.
 There will be special display cards hanging next to each photograph that is chosen which
will include the approximate location and time of each photo.
 Refreshments will be served for the Opening Reception on January 3rd. Please let Donna
know if you can help with this event.
 Mark your calendars to come to the Opening Reception from 1:00 to 4:00 PM on January
3rd!
The exhibit will run in the front gallery on Tuesday and Saturdays during Open Studio times from

Fine Art Festival
Attention! Attention! This is a Call to Artists for the Wickenburg Art Club Fine Art
Show!
The 2015 Prospectus and Applications are available. You can pick them up at WAC, or print them
out at www/wickenburgartclub.org (Navigate to the Events Folder and the Fine Art Show. You can
click on the forms there to download them.)
This year, all WAC juried members are eligible and very welcome to submit entries. The dates for
the show are:
March 22, through March 29, 2015. The deadline for entries is February 27, 2015.
Youth Art Program
From November 18th – There were 16 in class this week, and it was quiet and every one
concentrated on their peacocks. The class lesson plan used a mixture of Iridescence and Metallic
Acrylic’s and the encompassed the second half of a lesson plan on the five elements of shape. The
children drew their peacock using the shapes of the five elements. It was a great class!

West of Center
The Desert Caballeros Western Museum has asked for
artists who have displayed their art in any of the West
of Center Exhibitions to consider placing items for sale
in the Museum’s Ranch Dressing store on a
consignment basis. The Museum takes a 40%
commission on sales.

We have had a trial run which was quite successful, and the next openings will be in January, 2015.
Only prints, giclees, cards, etc., will be accepted. Any other artwork in which you are juried, such as
textiles, sculpture, wood work, carvings, so long as it is not too big, as we have only one table, can
also be submitted. This is an opportunity to make some extra money and the recognition gained
by displaying at the Museum’s gift shop.

Field Trips
Our December field trip will be to the Phoenix Art Museum to experience the 2014 WEST SELECT
exhibition. We will leave WAC on Thursday, December 18th at 10:00 am and return between 4 and
5 pm. Admission to the museum is $12 for seniors and $15 for you young whippersnappers under
65. Bring your lunch or splurge in the lovely museum restaurant – it’s your choice. Sign-up sheet
is in the kitchen at WAC.
The West Select: A Western Art Invitational Sale and Exhibition is an
annual celebration at Phoenix Art Museum that brings together collectors, fans, and leading
artists of the American West. This year's 37 artists are highly accomplished and decorated
artists from across the nation, into Canada and even England. The over 100 new works of
art included will be in a variety of media including paintings, drawings, sculptures and
photographs that feature landscapes, still-lifes, historical and contemporary genre scenes
of cowboys, settlers, American Indians, wildlife and the modern, or “New West.”. The
exhibition offers diverse representations of the American West that all tell the story of this
remarkable region.

It is with great pleasure I'll be turning over Membership to Gabrielle Moate who has previously
done an incredible job of turning our book collection into an "easy to find" library. All I can say is

"Wow". Gabrielle with find, as I have, that the very best part of doing "membership" is getting to
know you all! We are truly fortunate to have such helpful, talented and congenial cohorts.
Your $20 dues for 2015 can be accepted between now and January 1. You can mail dues to WAC,
PO Box 1737 or leave it with someone at the Art Center who will write you a receipt. Please note
any changes in your address, phone or email so it will be correct in the 2015 Directory. It would be
nice to have a new directory ready by our February meeting. If any WAC chairperson needs an

Here is a reminder of the processing steps:
Write a 3-part receipt and give the 3rd copy to the applicant.
Have the applicant fill out a membership form (bottom right-hand drawer of foyer desk).
Give a membership card (top right-hand drawer of foyer desk) to the applicant.
Put the 2 remaining receipts, membership form and payment in the office in either the Treasurer
or Membership slot.

Open Studio
Remember that we also have Open Studio on
Saturdays, when there are no WAC events being held in
the Art Center. That means we will have Open Studio
on Saturday, December 13th and 20th from 9:00 AM to
2:00 PM. Because of the Christmas Holidays and our
WAC Open House on January 3rd to display the “A Day
in the Life of Wickenburg” Community Photography
Project photographs, we will not have Open Studio on
Saturday, December 27th and Saturday January 3rd.

Photography Group - The Next Photography Meeting:
MONDAY! Monday! Monday... DEC FIRST! Dec First! Dec First...
At 6:30PM, The Wickenburg Photo Group presents another earth
shattering DEMO! Demo! Demo...
Dale Keiser, all the way from Vista Royale, will present, "Everything
you need to know about connecting to the new TV!" If you can't find
your way around HDMI, USB, Component Video or all those other
strange names, this will clarify everything for you within 15

minutes. If you want to practice with your device (such as your computer, smart phone, etc.), bring
it along and we'll show you during the Q&A.
Next up, everyone loves portraits but everyone hates their own portraits! The Digital Photo Guy,
fresh off his 2014 tour of model photography, will demonstrate “How to clear up spots and splotchy
skin, straighten crooked noses and otherwise make your portraits look like they came straight out of
Vogue or Mademoiselle!” Portrait Professional is simple to use but produces portraits that
everyone loves. In a short 45 minutes, Lee will make you the portrait retouching guru of your
family.
To top it off, Debbie Keiser, The Queen of the Soft Shoe, will lead a group discussion about The Art
of Gentle Critique. In this session, members will learn why, "Your photo sucks" may not be as
effective as, "It's a bit dark for my taste but the Goth overtones clearly come through."
Finally, whether your questions are new, old, simple or complicated, put them out there and we'll
see who has an answer. If you bring your device (camera, computer, C-PAP machine, wheel chair
or what have you,) we'll show you how it's supposed to work.

You are invited to attend the upcoming artist reception featuring myself and 4
other “leading lady” artists at the West Valley Art Museum located in Peoria City Hall. I am
very pleased to have been selected to be part of this small diverse group of talented women
artists and six of my original art pieces are on display/for sale. Click here for the flyer. The
attached Press Release talks about each of us and the other attachment is a flyer with a
sample work of each and dates/times/location information.
The Artist Reception is this coming Thursday, December 4, from 4-6PM with catered
refreshments (although I doubt there is wine because it’s housed in the City Hall
building). Please join me to see the art and partake of a few nibbles. If you can’t make the
reception, no worries, this show runs until January 8, 2015. Be sure to check the
dates/times available before you head out to the show though because it’s not open Friday,
Saturday or Sunday. Peoria City Hall is located at 8401 W. Monroe St., a few blocks south
of Peoria Avenue and west of Grand Avenue. The neighborhood is a bit eclectic but the City
Hall complex and grounds are quite nice.

I have a lovely NIkon Nuvis S camera (see below) I am no longer using. I only use my
iPhone for photos now. I will give this nifty camera away to anyone who wants it. Today I
googled this camera and it can still be purchased, so it is still a valid camera…if one wants
to bother with film. WalMart may be the closest developer, which makes it awkward.

Arizona Art Alliance
Don’t miss the big, beautiful Holiday show December 5-14, 2014. The show is located 1325 W.
Elliot Rd. Tempe, 85284 in the COSTCO Plaza. Hours are daily 10AM-6PM. You are all invited to
the Artist Reception Saturday, December 6, 6PM-9PM. Free Workshops will be held daily by
leading Arizona artists. You must reserve a space to attend a workshop. Go to the Alliance

Jurying With The Arizona Art Alliance –
The way to get juried with the Arizona Art Alliance is to participate in 3 shows in which you have
one or more pieces accepted (juried) into each show. It does not have to be consecutive shows.
The old “pay by the panel or table space” is basically a thing of the past. Now the cost is per entry
– slightly higher cost per entry for those artists not already juried in. Some shows may be
invitational due to very limited space, such as the Concert & Canvas collaboration described
below.
Concert & Canvas Collaboration with the Scottsdale Philharmonic.
The Arizona Art Alliance is pleased to be partnering with the Scottsdale Philharmonic during this
symphony season which runs October 2014 through May 2015. Some shows are held at the
Scottsdale Bible Church (free concerts) and some are at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing
Arts (only $15 per ticket). The Alliance will have 15 panels with assorted “invitation only”
paintings/artists represented at each show. The next concert is December 7 @ 4PM, then Feb 22,

Hassayampa River Preserve
Explore the fascinating world of raptors from 1 to 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 7 at The Nature
Conservancy's Hassayampa River Preserve. Professional bird tour leader Kathe Anderson will
share insights on the habitats and behaviors of hawks, eagles, falcons and vultures. After a short
walk along the trails to spot raptors, Liberty Wildlife will showcase several birds of prey.
Attendees can help Liberty’s rescue and rehabilitation efforts by bringing to the event donations of
paper towels, 13-gallon trash bags, Dawn dish soap, hand soap or bleach.
This class is for children and adults. Reservations are required.
