ATS Continues The Re
ATS Continues The Re-branding Process By Mary Besser Installation of new signs at the ATS corporate headquarters was completed in late January, 2014. These signs are one of the final steps of introducing the new ATS logo. The Carnelian granite for the signs was supplied by long-time ATS customer, Cold Spring Granite and installed by Artistic Stone and Concrete. The three dimensional, multi-colored portion of the signs were created by Netter’s Welding of Avon, Minnesota. The metal was powder coated prior to being attached to the granite. The new identity for ATS was developed and introduced internally on November 16, 2012, and externally on December 7, 2012. The core of the new ATS identity is the logo. It’s a wheel in motion and leans forward a bit to symbolize how ATS is moving forward. (Continued on Page 2) The new logos are built and hung on our building Jay Netter’s – Netter’s Welding, Avon, Minnesota In This Issue: Rolling Along Reflections Read Me & Win Dining, Drivers & Dialogue Spotlight on Safety Q&A Recruiting News Projects Leads the Way Million Milestones Photo Contest Picture Contest Winners 2 4 7 10 14 15 18 19 What’s News: Promotions Honor Flight ATS Logistics Internships Fuel Card Update Visit us in Las Vegas Jacksonville Update What’s Going on at the Shops ATS Crane Vans Equipment Update – Schnables Equipment Update – OBD Share the Spirit Casual Day for Charity SCSU Honors ATS United Way Nomination HazMat Certifications 2014 Scholarships Workflow Update 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 11 12 13 16 The Herald is published for the associates of ATS ATS. Page 2 Rolling Along State Of ATS ATS Continues The Re-branding Process By Jake Wood – President of ATS (continued from page 1) Welcome to 2014. ATS is committed to growth in 2014. Overall, ATS is expecting revenues to grow by 16% in 2014, and is emphasizing growth of it’s tractor fleets in 2014. • Wind-related revenue should make a substantial rebound in 2014 and should exceed $100 million. • ATS vans grew its fleet by 9% in 2013 and will grow by 8% in 2014. ATS vans continues to innovate within its niche business with the addition of a crane van fleet. • ATS Specialized will grow its fleet by 7% in 2014. • Heavy Haul plans to grow its tractor count by 15% in 2014. • Warren Transport, our largest outside company, completed another profitable year with $107 million in revenue. Warren is poised for 7% revenue growth in 2014 and will be implementing a lease purchase program to expand its fleet. • SunBelt Furniture Xpress had a successful 2013 with $47 million in revenues SunBelt plans 5% revenue growth and will be opening a revenues. terminal in Atlanta as it continues to diversify into general commodities LTL. • Midwest Specialized Transport also had a successful year with $32 million in revenue. Midwest plans 7.2% tractor growth and 7.5% revenue growth in 2014. Brent and Scott Anderson will continue to take on more management responsibilities in 2014. They were recently promoted to the roles of Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President President. We have talented and experienced people throughout the ATS organization. Our drivers are some of the best in the industry and we have one of the lowest driver turnover rates in the industry. We are a family-owned company that values determination, innovation, responsibility, excellence and integrity. The future is strong because our people are the best in the industry. ATS is a strong, performance-based carrier. Our 10 companies are focused on niches where we have a competitive advantage within the transportation industry. Looking back at last year 2013 was a challenging year for ATS operating companies. Windrelated revenues decreased by 163 million and one of our largest Customers revenues decreased by $29 million. Overall, ATS Revenues were down by 19% to $745 million. The good news is the company maintained a healthy level of profitability and remains debt free. This allows us to continue to invest in our future. Total capital expenditures for new equipment were over $60 million. This results in a lower average age of our equipment. The average age of our trailer equipment is less than five years and the average age of our tractor equipment is less than 2.25 years. Another important part of the ATS identity is telling the story of what ATS does. What ATS does can be described in four simple words: Highway – Our specialized, heavy haul and van services Maritime – Our over-the-water freight services Projects – Our ability to manage complicated projects from beginning to end Logistics – Our brokerage and transportation management services These words help tell a clear story and demonstrate the power and potential of ATS. As a company ATS, is very proud to have this logo speak for the organization. This new identity is backed by the professionalism and performance of everyone associated with ATS. Scott Anderson Brent Anderson Page 4 Reflections What’s News Truck Drivers Our Most Valuable Asset ATS Sponsors Honor Flight Byy Jim Anderson Trucking has become a very complex industry, requiring vision, leadership, management, maintenance, innovation, integrity, determination, responsibility, excellence, safety, insurance, permits, satellite computer communication, sales, payments, facilities, loading and unloading trailers and trucks. Did I say “trucks”? Yes, of course, trucking all hinges on trucks. But trucks don’t don t drive themselves themselves. The trucking industry requires healthy, capable, courageous, cautious drivers who make enormous sacrifices delivering all the goods we enjoy to our doors and stores. Drivers are the most valuable asset to any trucking company, including Anderson Trucking Service. All of us at ATS need to say it to ourselves and our drivers until we think it and they believe it: “Truck drivers, you are the most valuable asset of Anderson Trucking Service.” In December, ATS was recognized for its support of our military. ATS made a donation to Freedom Flight, Inc. for an “Honor Flight” for 62 veterans to go to Washington, DC. Freedom Flight, Inc. is a non-profit, educational corporation established in 1989 that seeks to Honor and increase the g In Action issues. It is awareness of Prisoners of War – Missing made upof dedicated volunteers who give their time, talent, and funds to fly three POW/MIA hot air balloons at various events across America and around the world. It is my intention throughout 2014 to speak openly about the value of our drivers. As ATS approaches our 60th year of service as a corporation, the list of excellent drivers who have worked for us continues to grow. One of those honorable drivers passed away recently. Kenneth “Knute” Widness drove for ATS from 1964-1992. He worked for many construction companies over the years but was proud to be an over-the-road trucker for Anderson Trucking (ATS) in St. Cloud for 28 years and earned Million Mile Accident-Free Accident Free Trucking Awards. He saw and experienced many milestones over the years such as hauling pieces for the Libby Dam and Vietnam Veteran Memorial Wall. After his retirement, May 23, 1992, he had many other jobs, but loved to do woodworking in his basement, making things for his family. (Glende Nilson Funeral Home and Cremation Service) In addition to an excellent driving d i i record d ffor ATS ATS, Knute and his wife, Goldie, were married for over 62 years. Together they raised four children and lived to enjoy seven grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren. He was a gunner on the cook and g USS Logan during WWII and was honored to see not only the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima (February 23, 1945) but also the invasion of Okinawa on March 26, 1945. Kenneth “Knute” Widness October 23,1926 - January 28th, 2014 Whoever said that driving a truck was not a valuable, productive life? Kenneth “Knute” Widness was one valuable asset to his family, country and ATS. ATS offers a variety of paid internships throughout our company. These internships allow students to develop their professional skills. As a new or future graduate, students are developing the skills that are in high demand in the transportation industry: the y p g analytical focus to devise new solutions to complex challenges, the intelligence to think proactively, and the talent to take their career — and ATS — to the next level. Internships are currently available in St. Cloud, MN and Ames, IA, to both new graduates and undergraduate students. Opportunities vary by semester, and may include (but are not limited to) the following: Customer Service, Sales, Operations and Maintenance. The ATS Logistics internship program currently includes two people working in Regional Carrier Rep Support positions and one as a Sales Intern. They are all seniors in college. Two are from St Cloud State University, one majoring in Marketing and the other in Economics. The third ATS Logistics intern is a senior at St John’s University, majoring in Business Management. Currently, there is one Technician intern from the St Cloud Technical College working at the St Cloud ATS West shop. Internships in other departments and divisions are also available. ATS seeks great talent from a variety of local and nationwide schools to help broaden our capabilities and enrich our company culture. Our internship assignments provide valuable hands-on, real-world experience. Interns with ATS are more than a student – they are members of the team! ATS is proud of our history and as an established leader in the transportation industry, we are focused on the future. We look to today's students for fresh perspectives and to be forward-thinking in creating solutions. Fuel Card Update B Mike By Mik N Nesland l d ATS will be converting to the new Electronic Funds Source LLC fuel card. Company drivers, Independent Contractors, and Lease drivers will be assigned a new card that will include instructions on how to activate and take advantage of more functionality. Among the new options; a smart phone app that will allow drivers to access real-time discounted pricing in the US and Canada. ATS Contractors will be able to manage account transfers and on-line on line bill pay pay. The new EFS fuel card platform will also give ATS Canadian drivers more locations to choose from in Canada, including acceptance with Petro Canada, Husky, Imperial Oil and Irving Oil. This will add an additional 350 plus fuel stops to our Canadian network. At ATS, we take pride in negotiating the deepest fuel discounts in the industryy - and p pass ALL savings g on to our drivers! Visit Us Next In Las Vegas ATS will be at Con EXPO in Las Vegas starting on Tuesday, March 4 through Friday, March 7. ATS will be located in the Silver Lot in space 4448. An information booth and give-away roulette wheel will be positioned on a RGN, RGN pulled by a bright bright, new ATS tractor. ATS will host a social hour from 3pm to 5pm on Wednesday and Thursday, March 5 and 6. We are looking forward to seeing our many customers there! Page 6 What’s News ATS Maritime – Jacksonville, FL Byy Brandon Nelson ATS Maritime, formerly known as ICE, has been part of the ATS family since 1992. Over the past 22 years, we have evolved from a Caribbean freight focused company, to a fully functional international transportation company. ATS Maritime offices are located in St Cloud, MN – Jacksonville, FL – San Juan Juan, PR – and Bremen, Germany. Bremen Germany In the first quarter of 2012, ATS Maritime opened the new Jacksonville, FL terminal. The terminal is equipped with a 40-ton gantry crane, 30,000lb capacity forklifts, and a full trailer maintenance shop. The terminal offers transfer, securing, storage, and consolidation of cargo for our customers. The Jacksonville staff forklift operation and crane/rigging certified. Jacksonville Terminal ATS over-the-road drivers have 24/7 access to the yard and drivers’ lounge. The drivers’ lounge has a laundry facility, showers, refrigerator, recliners, and a big screen TV. The terminal has approximately 20 restaurants within a 2 mile radius, so there are plenty of options for drivers to eat. ATS drivers have priority status at our shop. We understand the importance of drivers’ down time and we strive to minimize that by having an inventory of equipment ready d ffor use. Byy Doug g Kading g Our maintenance action plan for 2014 includes the following items. First, we need to get better in our identification of repetitive repairs. Second, we want to improve our mechanic training. Third, we have to improve our staffing levels so we can provide better service to the fleet. And finally, we must simplify our work order coding to make it easier on all the people in the shops and the back office who have to work with our work orders orders. I hate to say it, but the best source of understanding a unit that is having repetitive maintenance issue, is our drivers. Even with the reporting capabilities and some pop up enhancements in the work order system, we sometimes miss connecting all the dots to realize a unit is having the same or similar maintenance issues over and over. It is extremely important for the driver to let us know they have had multiple jump starts, starts battery replacements replacements, coolant loss or usage, regen problems or other issues. It is even more important to call out an issue if we are to have any chance of recovering warranty. The opportunity for warranty on a repetitive repair has the best chance of occurring if we let the shop know to save the part and we contact the original shop that did the repair. While we will always need help from our drivers identifying repetitive repairs, the maintenance team will work on improving reporting ti and d reall titime system t notification tifi ti tto assist i t us iin catching t hi these issues and getting them fixed more quickly. The maintenance team is committed to improving our mechanic training this year. The complexity of the electrical system, engine sensors, and emissions after-treatment system has grown to a point we must invest heavily in our mechanic training. Our failure to do so will result in us having to rely more heavily on the dealers. This lengthens unit down time which we cannot afford. ATS has access to online training from Freightliner, Detroit, Cummins, and Peterbilt. We have diagnostic software from CAT, Cummins, Detroit, Bendix, Meritor/WABCO, Espar, and others. We have the tools available and this year, we are committed to designing and implementing a program to keep our mechanics on top of the technology so we can provide high quality service to the fleet. Our maintenance service hours at ATS shops have dropped about 10,000 hours in the past two years. There is a real mechanic shortage in the US. Our plan this year is to close the gap and produce more hours to get ATS equipment into our company shops. Opening the Houston shop in March will certainly help this. We also have to complete our hiring plans and control turn over. We currently have 2 tractor mechanic and 2 trailer mechanic positions open in St Cloud Cloud. We have 2 mechanic positions open in Houston and a position open in Gary. Please welcome Cyril Chandler, Tyler Swartz, Cory Jankord, and Greg Wildman as mechanics in St Cloud, and David Landrum, Dale Moise, (Continued at top of page) Jose Majno, and Michael Kahn in Houston, and Kevin Oloughlin in Gary. We spent lots of time by lots of people coding work orders so we can accurately bill the work we perform and correctly capture our cost. Our mechanics, service writers, foreman and shop managers all have to understand this complex process at the shop . In addition, Leasing, Contractor Services, Road Service, and Accounting all have to be involved in the process. This year we hope to make some changes to reduce the work load on all these groups and improve our cost capture and billing accuracy. Those are the top four items maintenance is working on this year. There are many other minor improvements being made year also. Please look for future updates on our progress. Read Me and Win! The "Read Me and Win" Contest is open to ATS Employees and Contractors. ATS Vans has taken delivery of their new Crane Vans and has quickly put them into service. A simple description of this equipment would be that a crane has been installed into a new, reinforced trailer, transforming the standard 53’ air ride dry van semi-trailer from an ordinary freight trailer on wheels to a mobile material handling and delivery system. material-handling system Transferring freight and making van deliveries is no longer restricted to loading docks or walking planks. With just a push of a button, the internal crane makes it possible to load and unload freight, almost anywhere. Oversized, heavy and cumbersome items (up to 8,000 pounds) transfer easily from truck to ground level. N Dock? No D k? No N Problem! P bl ! Page 9 What’s News ATS Enjoys Success With Newly Designed Schnable Trailer Byy Mark Keul In keeping with the ATS value of “Innovation”, ATS now has a new generation Schnable trailer that was delivered January 2014. IT was a long road to get to this. In 2011 ATS started talking with the trailer manufacturer about a new steering design for our dollies. In October of 2012 we received our prototype multi-axle steerable dolly. In January of 2013 a team was put together to look at how to reduce weight on the trailer, review the steering system, and look at driver ease of use. This included a group of drivers, maintenance, site supervisors and office staff. Many great ideas from this team were implemented by the manufacturer. ATS would like to thank our HH driver Harold K. for testing, troubleshooting, and providing feedback on the prototype trailer in the year of 2013. ATS took possession of this “first of its kind 2014. The trailer met all of the goals that ATS was shooting for which was new steering system, kind” trailer in January 2014 system weight reduction, reduction and ease of use. Because this is a new generation trailer, the work has not ended. 2014 will be a year of TRAINING. This will include every department, training on operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, etc. The first 3 drivers on these trailers are Mike M., Harold K., and Jesse K. I know that they will be the key to continued improvements on the trailers, troubleshooting, and maintenance. The design of the trailer was the result of a large group effort and a multi-year project that is still ongoing ongoing. The driver feedback on these trailers has been great and we will be adding more of these trailers to the fleet in 2014. Read Me and Win Questions This Issue’s Contest Questions! 1. Page 10 Dining, Drivers & Dialogue By Brandon Plautz Houston (Channelview, TX) Shop Opening in March Some of the topics that have come up regularly at every driver lunch are “When will the Houston facility be complete?” “What will be at the Houston terminal?” and “What driver amenities are available at the various terminals?” The Houston terminal is scheduled to be completed by March 1. What does this new shop offer the Channelview, TX terminal? The 11,800 sq. ft. shop will consist of 3 drive-thru truck and trailer maintenance bays, along with a Safety Lane Bay dedicated to inspecting all trucks and trailers entering the yard during the shop business hours. When laying out the shop there was adequate room provided for a parts bay with mezzanine mezzanine, which should have the basic truck and trailer parts along with MEC supplies for drivers to pick up when in the Houston/Channelview area. What’s in the shop? This shop is set up with user friendly amenities to help the shop mechanics feel comfortable while at work. For instance the shop has a Break Room, Locker Room, and Shop Manager’s office. To make the shop work area more user friendly, each bay is equipped with air, oil, and grease reel lines for servicing each truck or trailer that is in shop for either maintenance or repairs. One way we also made the shop more comfortable for the mechanics is that we fully lined the interior of the shop with white metal liner panels to make it a brighter atmosphere for doing work on the equipment in the shop. We also fully enclosed the compressor room which will help the shop area be a little more quiet when the pneumatic tools are being used in the shop. With the new shop in place, now the drivers will notice that there is a new in-bound gate for entering the yard during non-business hours. During the shop business hours , drivers will need to enter the yard through the Safety Lane which is lined up with the driveway or old inbound gate that was installed a couple years ago. The out-bound gate will still be in the same location at the terminal. Drivers will have to wrap around the new shop to get to that out-bound gate. Please keep in mind the first month or so will be a transition period for both the shop mechanics and drivers using the terminal. Please be patient when at this facility until the terminal yard gets organized and labeled with the correct signage to help all employees using the terminal shop and yard yard. Along with the new shop facility and updated yard, Houston will have 24/7 EFS card access to drivers’ lounge, TV area with reclining chairs, vending machines including pop, snacks, microwave and ice machine, laundry area, restrooms, showers and short term driver parking. Page 11 Equipment Update 2013 OBD Certification (On Board Diagnostics) Byy Steve Psyck y As more of our new semi tractors are placed into service, I want to share with you some details about 2013 OBD. OBD regulation is a federal mandated system product that monitors the performance of all components that have an impact on emissions. All engine makes/models for on highway transit are required to meet the updated regulation. The OBD system monitors items such as fuel, air, EGR, cooling, DPF, SCR, actuators and crankcase ventilation systems. In the event of a system not performing as mandated, the OBD system will display a Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) to the operator (it will light up). The aspect of checking of systems has been around for some time, but what came to light last year was the volume of items monitored monitored, a reduced level of acceptable variances from par par, an avenue of creating awareness to the operator, and the ability for a state inspector to view an illuminated MIL. I’ve added a simple visor card below to show examples of MILs and your prescribed action. This sample is from Daimler/Detroit. As we are half way thru winter’s harsh grab across most of the country, I’d like to remind all operators about blending of fuel types as you may travel from one climate to another. Managing your fuel type purchase(s) for the climate you will be in later today and tomorrow is very beneficial beneficial. Managing the blend in your tanks will reduce your exposure to costly expenses related to a failed fuel system via shock treatment to your fuel tank’s contents or being towed to a shop for heat treatment. The amount of engine heated return fuel to your fuel tanks has greatly reduced from previous years’ engines. In the past, an operator could rely on the heated return fuel to reduce the risk of a gelling event, but with today’s engines returning less warm fuel to the tank and all of the No-Idling initiatives, you have to plan your fuel purchase. The type of fuel blend or straight product offering will be labeled at the fuel island pumps. The following chart identifies the fuel blending requirements to cope with cold weather conditions. (continued on next page) Page 12 Equipment Update (continued from previous page) Definitions: Cloud Point – the temperature at which wax in the fuel begins to crystallize and form solid particles. Cold Filter Plugging Point – the temperature at which the engine fuel supply filters become plugged with wax particles. Pour Point – The temperature at which fuel gels up and will not flow. Page 14 Spotlight on Safety Winter Driving Pretrip. For the Trip. Check the weather for where you are at and the route you will be traveling. Have a smart phone? Use a weather app that automatically updates you on the weather in your area. What type of fuel do you have in your tanks (can it handle the cold?) Do you have extra washer fluid? Do you have supplies for a day or two in case of an emergency? Do you have extra batteries for safety devices? Is your dash clear so your defrost vents will work? Are your brake lights and tail lights clear? LED lights do not get hot enough to melt snow. With that being said, we still have some work to do. We cannot allow ourselves or our safety programs to become complacent so we’re starting something new. Starting in January, we have introduced a new driver training program that will replace our quarterly tests. Drivers now receive an accident scenario or story of an accident that happened right here at ATS and answer questions pertaining to that particular type of accident. This will allow us to adjust our training topics each month in order to stay current with the opportunities each fleet has at that time. Thank you for your feedback and support . We look forward to a prosperous and safe 2014. During the trip Plan ahead for extra stops in the event that weather and road conditions turn severe. Adjust your speed for the weather conditions; only go as fast as you are able to stop. Increase your following distance (a lot!!!) Be extra cautious of the traffic around you. Identify those driving erratically or too fast for the conditions and distance yourself whenever possible to avoid being caught up in a loss of control accident. Do you know your safety trigger for when you should get off the road? What is your comfort zone? If chains are required, make the decision to park! New Year, New Driver Testing Many people look forward to the New Year for a new start on breaking old habits (Darn those New Year’s resolutions). At ATS we look at the New Year as a fresh start filled with unlimited possibilities! Each and every one of you deserves a round of applause for the hard work and dedication you put into building the safety culture we have today. We could not have had the success we had in 2013 if it weren’t for you! (continued at top of page) Rollie Anderson, CEO Question: What do you wish you could do over? Answer from Rollie: There’s not a lot I would change. Making some mistakes is partt off learning l i tto do d something thi well. ll Without With t those th mistakes I would not be who I am today and ATS would not be what it is today. We try to make decisions one at a time and make them as a team effort. As a team we win some and we lose some, but approaching decisions as a team keeps egos from getting involved. We win as a team or we lose as a team. Page 15 Recruiting News A Big Career Step Forward Shawn Little says he’s always dreamed big. Back in the late 1970s, while other boys were following a craze for miniature Matchbox cars, five-year-old Little couldn’t get enough of moving his giant Tonka trucks through the sandy part of his yard. So today, it wouldn’t come as a surprise to know that he has spent the last dozen years working with oversized or heavy haul freight, most recently for Anderson Trucking Service (ATS). “I taught myself to drive a truck; never went to school. After I passed my CDL test, I went to work doing heavy haul from day one,” Little says. “ The bigger it is, the more I like it! There’s just a thrill and a rush I get from moving really big stuff down the highway.” Little explains that he was attracted to ATS early on. “I’ve wanted to work with Anderson for years. I had been working in heavy haul at another company, but never got to do anything like Anderson does,” he says. “I would see their trucks out on the road and every one of their drivers that I’d talked to only had good things to say. I was impressed with their reputation.” Finally, in June of 2013, Little achieved his dream of driving for ATS, joining our Flatbed Specialized Division as a Class 2 driver. Within six months he was already moving up. “I took the test to become a Class 1 driver and now I can handle even bigger loads. Soon, I’ll be joining the Heavy Haul division,” says Little. “That’s what’s good about Anderson, you can really progress in your career. The ladder is there to climb. It’s a good career.” Shawn Little “Anderson has offered me the opportunity to do more—to haul much bigger than I’d ever done before. I’ve worked for five trucking companies, and none of them can touch Anderson. companies Anderson Their freight offers you something new and different every day day.” Little, Little who leases his tractor through the ATS Lease Program, says he plans to stay put. “I like it here so much that I want to retire from here. It’s as good as I’ve ever been treated. They care about their drivers and they show it.” ATS Projects Leads The Way – Wind Transport Innovation ATS Transports 59M Blades for a Major Wind Turbine Manufacturer Page 16 ATS Vans Introduces Omnitracs Workflow Update In 2013 ATS, Inc. implemented the driver workflow in Omnitracs. The Driver Workflow is an Omnitracs-hosted application that helps deliver the right information to the right driver at the right time.
