INSIDE THIS
ISSUE
A Look at what's going on inside the ATS world.
The Company We Keep
Our folks that put this newsletter
together have decided that this issue
will have a theme of freedom and
appreciation. It struck me that the
very freedom of travel across this
fascinating world is something to
appreciate.
I often heard my mother tell
me that “you are who your friends are”
or “you are defined by the company
you keep”. This bodes very well for
me, as the company that I have been
fortunate to keep across the ATS
miles, are the making of a bestselling
novel.
Recently, I traveled to Reno,
Nevada, for the great honor of
presenting the KHAE to our RNO team
at the Reno-Tahoe Airport Board of
Commissioners meeting.
I was
bursting with pride to share with the
airport board members and guests of
this
meeting
the
many
accomplishments of this small station.
It stood as a great example of the
power of few.
This simple trip took
on a roller coaster type experience for
me.
Upon arrival, I received a call
that would end up being the last time I
spoke to my dear friend and colleague,
Chris Richardson. As I brushed aside
this emotional moment, and I met a
group of extraordinary employees from
ATS and American Airlines performing
their everyday duties. They did it in
great concert and respect for each
other. We followed this by seeing a
rather strange private aircraft taxi to a
remote ramp nearby. It turned out to
be the husband of one of our proud
ATS team members. Simply said, he
was going to join our little celebration!
All of the RNO ATSers enjoyed the
celebration and I was privileged to
hang around at the end and enjoy the
easy banter of a group that works well
together. I was even given a tour of
A Message from Sally
their “wall of fame” which depicts the
likenesses of celebrities with fellow
ATSers. Truly hilarious – and I was in
need of a deep laugh! I found myself
appreciating the company I was
keeping while thinking of my dear
friend Chris. He would have loved
this simple pleasure of station
camaraderie as he derived most of his
passion from the airport environment.
The next morning we were
invited guests at the airport board
meeting, I was humbled that our very
own ATS leader at RNO declined to
say a few words to her grateful
public.
She was clearly proud but
saw no reason to shout and boast.
The award said it all. Further, she told
me that the station decided not to
replace the KHAE that had been
slightly dented in shipment. She said
that it reflected her station’s spirit;
unique and not perfect. How cool is
that? My trip ended with a lunch with
our customer and our manager while
we reminisced about some events at
the airport and tried to guess the
future. Again, great company.

Just before I boarded my
flight home, I received a call that my
friend Chris Richardson had passed
away that morning. I will truly miss
his company. My trip began with my
talk with Chris and ended with the
sad news of his passing. However,
everything in between was truly how
Chris lived – by the company he kept.
As we begin to welcome in
Canada Day and the 4th of July, I
appreciate the simple freedoms we
have and how thankful I am for the
company I am fortunate to keep.

Paul Wappelhorst

stepping down from his duties as CFO and Vice
President of Finance effective May 31, 2012.

made enormous contributions as the steward of our
fiscal health. He played an intricate part of our
relationships with our U.S. and Canadian banks and his
precision with our audits is legendary and without equal.
Paul was also responsible for the amalgamation of our
U.S. and Canada financial reporting and the Canadian
acquisitions of Wingtips and BAS.

Chris Richardson
Christopher Neil Richardson born June 1941 in Barnstaple, Devon,
England, departing from his home, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada,
June 14, 2012. Christopher "Chris" embraced everyone he met with
a genuine interest, and uncommon kindness. Christopher formed his
countless Canadian friendships after creating Silver Wing Holidays,
a tour operator business. When Silver Wing was sold, Christopher
established Wingtips Airport Services, an airport management
company based at Calgary International Airport. On August 16,
2010, Christopher sold Wingtips to ATS and remained as a
consultant to assist through the transition phase. And until recently,
even in failing health, a smiling Chris could be seen dashing through
the airport terminal on his brilliant red scooter, sporting the Wingtips
logo. Christopher taught us an invaluable lesson: Grab each
available day with gusto. He will be missed by many.

PDX in the pdxaminer
The article below was published in the pdxaminer, featuring the PDX station.
Kelvin Gross, General Manager of Airport
Terminal Services, Inc. at PDX, prepares
the ground crew for off-loading of an
inbound flight.
What may start as an ordinary day at the office for Kelvin Gross, general manager of
Airport Terminal Services, Inc. can become anything but ordinary when nature calls.
literally.
Recognized for quality in passenger care and ramp handling services, ATS also offers
a variety of services including pet cargo care. Calls from the "wild" are heard around
the airfield when animals are transported through the cargo facility, including bearcats,
cheetahs, monkeys and ferrets, tropical birds, iguanas, lizards and snakes. But
animals and luggage are not the only precious cargo ATS handles with care.
After becoming station manager with ATS in 1990, Gross' 22-year tenure with the
company at PDX has given him an array of experiences. "Just when I thought I had
seen it all, a bearcat comes through our facility (in a cage, of course) and needs my
assistance," said Gross. "Another time we located a passengers' diamond ring after it
fell through the lavatory of a plane."
Most recently the ATS crew helped a gentleman reclaim his iPad across the United
States after it was left on a plane at PDX. "It's amazing what a typical day brings and
the variety of work we do around here, all in a day's work," said Gross.
ATS ground crew operations are performed "below-wing," or underneath the plane.
Crew members arrive at work before dusk to start the day and begin checking the
bag room to ensure proper equipment is ready and functional. Routine security checks
are conducted on the perimeter of planes, and bags are loaded and unloaded with
luggage, freight and mail, in addition to preparing planes for arrival and departure.
Services performed "above-wing" are considered passenger services, which includes
passenger check-in, ticketing, boarding, baggage services and lost luggage that is
separated from passengers.
Overall, ATS serves 37 airports in the United States and Canada with over 2,400
employees nationwide. Approximately 170 of those workers are located at PDX.
