LABOR of LOVE - Central Oklahoma Quilters Guild
LABOR of LOVE Volume 30, No. 6 NQA Chapter OK#544 From the President’s Chair Hello! It was wonderful to see everyone at our Guild meetings. Both meetings were interesting with our speaker, Dave Martelli. I‟m sure most of us will be „well equipped‟ when our orders arrive. He is a super young man and he is dedicated to helping quilters. There were lots of pretty wall hanging tops at the classes with the Gentlemen Quilters from Tulsa. We all had a great time. It looks like Fall is here. The trees are beginning to turn. We are hoping the foliage will be at its peak on our way to Branson. We enjoy being there to participate in the Veteran‟s Celebration. Looking forward to a great time. I hope next year our reservations won‟t conflict with the Houston Quilt Show. With Fall here, it reminds me about the different seasons and how each is unique and appreciated. We all have or are in different seasons of our lives. Things change, but there is much for which to be thankful. As we know, our interests change and we grow from different experiences. Our ages are also seasons of our life, but age doesn‟t have to mean we are on the shelf with nothing to look forward to. Life gets more precious. Let us all live each day to its fullest. Looking forward to next month and seeing all of your smiling faces. Blessings to you and yours, Revonda Blanding COQG November 2008 Central Oklahoma Quilters Guild November 2008 Board & Committees President: Revonda Blanding 794-1847 Pres. Quilt Display Brenda Williams First Time Ever to Enter in a Quilt Show - Have you been afraid to enter your quilt into a show or feel your workmanship might not be up to par? Now is the time to enter those quilts you wished you had in the past. This does not have to be your first quilt – just first time to ENTER a quilt show. This category was very well received at the 2007 show and we would like to encourage you to take the plunge – it’s a proven fact - no quilter was harmed while participating in the category!!! In fact, the viewers were very impressed and enjoyed seeing the quilts AND one quilter won the Quilt Show Chairmen Choice Award Blue Ribbon and a nice gift. Raffle Quilt Lois Lyon Quilt shops – are you interested in displaying and selling tickets on the ―Diamond in the Garden‖ 2009 raffle quilt for a month? Members - do you belong to a guild that will allow tickets sold at a meeting? Contact me (789-6377 / 740-0118) to set up a date to display our beautiful quilt. Souvenirs Darlene Mangum T-shirts, tote bags and show pin are for sale from now through the quilt show. Please make arrangements to pick up your preorder combo set at the November meeting. REMEMBER to purchase the 2009 show shirt, tote bag, and pin and wear them at upcoming quilt shows to help get the word out. Staffing Beverly Beesley We need YOU! Now is the time to start considering what areas you would be interested in volunteering your time at the quilt show. We need all hands on deck for setup and tear down, plus help in lots of other areas, including the Receiving Committee. Women’s Battered Shelter Charity Darlene Mangum Thank you to the members who brought donations to guild meeting; my car was loaded down. For those that are doing ―fall‖ cleaning, Our Sisters’ Closet can use any books, knickknacks, kitchen items, holiday items, sheets, shower curtains, etc. Please tell your friends about the store located at SW 59th St./S. Penn Av. (closed Mondays) as they need more people to shop the store. Centennial Cookbook With the holidays approaching, consider purchasing our wonderful Centennial Cookbook for the low price of $15, which includes a neat cookbook stand. They are available for sale at Ways & Means at the guild meetings. COQG November 2008 2 Officer &Committee Reports Day Vice President Report Beth Odom: ―It’s all in the tools!‖ How many times have you witnessed the failure that occurs whenever your favorite spouse tries to repair things without the right tools? Usually a simple project becomes a disaster quite quickly. Dave Martelli gave us an interesting demonstration of how the right sewing tools can make our projects much simpler and less torturous to our bodies. Beginning with a rotary blade sharpener all the way to a long arm quilting machine, he and his dad have turned the skill of problem solving into a successful business. Judging by the line that formed after his talk we are all looking for just the right tools to make our sewing and quilting easier. Don’t forget that November’s meeting is moved up a week because of our need to consume excessive amounts of Thanksgiving vittles. See you November 20th!! Night Vice President Report Lois Lyon: What fun to see all the new notions that were presented by the Martellis! It really is nice to have the correct tools. Once again we had a great workshop given by Gary Wasson and Joe Galusha. We made some really pretty ―Circles and Curves.‖ I am sure you will see them at the next show and tell. I am looking forward to the November workshop to be given by Gabrielle Swain. Aren’t we lucky to have such great teachers? It is such a privilege to be a member of COQG and have such wonderful programs and workshops. I hope to see you at the next meeting – and workshop! Director of Newsletter Report Genie Ford: Had a blast at the ―Circles and Curves‖ morning workshop with the Gentleman Quilters from Tulsa. The ladies of the guild have such a great time in workshops. Joe and Gary are wonderful teachers and so willing to share their knowledge. My greatest moment came when we were sewing the blocks together for the top and all my corners met perfectly!!! I am sooo not a machine-piecer. Looking forward to next month’s speaker and workshop, as I believe ―more is better‖ when it comes to embellishing. If you have anything to share in the newsletter, please email or call me. ; ) [email protected] or 330-4963 COQG November 2008 Director of Programs Report Georgann Giudice: We owe a big Thank You to the Martellis for providing the guild with a good program at absolutely no cost to COQG. Dave was a great guest and while promoting their products he also managed to teach us a little something and entertain us at the same time. Thank you, guild members, for making his visit worthwhile. (You know what I mean.) AM members will be interested to know that he gave "Heart Warmers" the binding attachment and the DVD instructions. It should be a big help in finishing the charity quilts. So, if you thought you might like to have it for your sewing room, come to "Heart Warmers", learn how to use it, and do a good turn at the same time by binding and finishing some quilts. When the orders come in Joyce Thorp, her twin sister Carol, and I will get them ready for pick-up and begin calling or e-mailing. Fridays' workshops were well attended with 13 in each. Everyone had a great time and all but a couple completed their wall quilt top. Even I got to finish one in the afternoon group. Sure appreciate how Gary and Joe have great examples of the techniques they teach and well put-together kits so everyone can complete their piece and have a real feeling of satisfaction. The different color and fabric combinations were wonderful to see--look for them during Show and Tell. Their give-a-ways are always goodies that are fun to win, as well. THANK YOU, Gary and Joe! You truly are the Gentlemen Quilters from Tulsa. Thanks for all you did to make the ―Circles and Curves‖ workshop a success. I was only hearing compliments. Four Seasons of Stitching By Martha Beth Lewis When it's cold, I get the itch To sit before the fire and stitch. And when it comes, that joyous spring, That's when I make my needle sing. In the summer when it's hot, I stay inside and stitch a lot. In fall when kids go back to school, You'll find me stitching, as a rule. I never really need a reason - Anytime is stitching season! http://www.serve.com/marbeth/ needlework_humor.html 3 CENTRAL OKLAHOMA QUILTERS GUILD 2008 PROGRAM AND W ORKSHOP SCHEDULE . COQG appreciates your participation and support. SEE YOU AT A COQG WORKSHOP NEAR YOU! Workshop Registration FALL PROGRAMS AND WORKSHOPS November promises to have a great program and workshop with Gabrielle Swain as our guest. Gabrielle is best known for her use of color and her craftsmanship. She began quilting in 1983 and her quilts range from realistic to abstract. She continues to explore, through her work, man and his relationship to nature. She has authored two books on appliqué and has been featured in many publications, both nationally and internationally. She will be sharing ideas on how to develop more creative energy. The program will demonstrate how to set goals for a more productive work schedule. Audience participation will be welcomed. Friday‟s workshop is entitled "Borrowed Tools." Participants will be learning to use techniques and tools formerly associated with other media to bring greater dimension and realism to any appliqué. This all day class will explore pen and ink and colored lead artist's pencils to embellish appliqué. Working hands-on, each student will work with all these "new" tools. Sounds like a great opportunity to learn some new tricks. I appreciate all of you who participated in the October workshop - getting your registrations in early was a good thing. Early registrations make the Program Director's job so much easier. The November registration is closed, so again I say, "THANKS!!". If you want to go on a waiting list, call or e-mail me. COQG November 2008 5 Block of the Month: First Lady Blocks Frances Folsom Cleveland (1864-1947) First Lady 1886-1889 and 1893-1897 Frances Folsom was 21 when she married President Grover Cleveland, in the White House. She had graduated from Wells College and carried herself with authority and confidence. Even though she was a temperance advocate (she toasted her marriage with mineral water), she served wine at White house functions. Frances was considered sweet, kind, and gracious. She quickly became one of the most popular First Ladies of the century. President Cleveland lost the election of 1888, and as they were packing up to move from the White house, Frances instructed the servants to take good care of all the furnishings, because she fully expected—and rightly so—to return in four years. Frances was the first to marry a President in the White House, the first to serve as First Lady for two non-continuous terms, and the first presidential widow to remarry. Hand Quilting Tip Buy two 'thumb picks' from a music shop. Roughen one and use on the finger underneath the quilt to save it getting pricked continuously. Glue a piece of leather on the other (to 'grab' the needle) and use instead of a conventional thimble. This makes hand quilting more of a joy than a chore. - Shirley in the United Kingdom http://www.blockcentral.com/tipshandquilting.shtml COQG November 2008 6 2009 COQG Programs JANUARY 22: "SAMPLER" presented by talented members of the guild, and Silent Auction of Baskets NO WORKSHOP FEBRUARY 26: "The Many Faces of Lola Jenkins" MARCH 26: Report from COQG Grant Recipient, Lynn Deal NO WORKSHOP APRIL 23: Marilyn Karper MAY 28: Evening Meeting ONLY.
