The direct to metal (DTM) system eliminates the need to use any kind of metal pretreatment such as Alodine, Solgel or wash primer technologies. The primer is applied directly to the clean Scotch-Brited substrate. AMS 3095A for Direct to Metal paint solution AkzoNobel recently celebrated AMS 3095A qualification of a new direct to metal (DTM) high gloss paint system. The direct to metal system, composed of Aerodur LV 2114 and Aerobase Base Coat/Clear Coat, is the very first of its kind to receive the AMS 3095A qualification, passing the stringent testing of the SAE aerospace standards for high gloss exterior paint systems for commercial fleet maintenance. Aerodur LV 2114 primer can be applied directly to the clean Scotch-Brited substrate. The primer itself provides the necessary adhesion and corrosion resistance to meet the stringent specification requirements. Further time savings are realized by the use of the reliable Aerobase Base Coat/Clear Coat system. The direct to metal paint system provides a practical solution to improve the efficiency of aircraft maintenance. It eliminates mixed fleet complexities and can be applied on any type of commercial aircraft, whatever the climate and anywhere in the world. Whilst the variability of aircraft appearance within a fleet shall be an issue of the past, AkzoNobel’s state-of-the-art AMS3095A direct to metal paint solution offers simplicity and economy for airlines and maintenance stations. Key factors demonstrating the benefits of the DTM system are reduction in process times, resulting in shorter AOG times, simplicity and reduced maintenance costs. The paint system also provides easy strip-ability within the typical MRO requirements Clear Coat Aviox CC UVR Base Coat - Aerobase Primer - Aerodur LV 2114 Metal - Scotch-brite solvent clean Reflections Reflections Issue 16 Our People Winter 2013 5 Coming & Going Daniela takes the helm "It was also fascinating to visit customers like Airbus and Boeing, something I intend to do more" April 2013 saw the end of a distinguished Aerospace career as Kevin Fleetwood, sBU director for Aerospace Coatings retired. His successor is Daniela Vlad, who transferred from the Powder Coatings business unit to take over the Aerospace division. After what can only be described as a hectic first half year in the business, Reflections caught up with Daniela and looked back at the first months. "It was also great to meet customers like Airbus and Boeing, and some of the MROs and airlines, something I intend to do more. I have done quite a bit of air travel but to actually stand under an airplane is a new experience. I had not realised painting aircraft still involves a lot of manual work. And I also learned that to be successful in Aerospace you really need to work with and satisfy a variety of customers: OEMs, Commercial Airlines, MRO, etc, and they can have different needs." For those of you who have not yet met her, a short introduction: Born and raised in Romania, she moved to The Netherlands after getting her Master degree in chemical engineering. In Twente she studied for her MBA degree, and she was particularly stimulated by the focus of the MBA program on entrepreneurship. After 10 years of different positions at Shell and a short stint at Philips, she joined the AkzoNobel Powder Coatings unit as global Finance Director. Per April 1st 2013 she became the General Manager of Aerospace Coatings. She sees this as a great challenge as now she can oversee the entire business. "I am really encouraged by the potential we have in this industry: we have good R&D and technical capabilities, excellent customer service, and around the world various teams work together to serve our customers every day. With the world fleet expected to double in the next 20 years, we are well equipped to capitalize on the opportunities of the Aerospace industry." It must be quite a learning curve? Daniela smiles: "Yes it is and I find it very stimulating. People were very welcoming and enjoyed talking to me about the business. I was quite impressed how determined and dedicated the team is to provide customers with the best solutions possible. Sometimes people would interrupt a conversation with me because something had to be done for a customer at that moment. I attended one of our customer trainings and I noticed soon that our customers really appreciated our dedication to them painting aircrafts successfully. I even sprayed a panel with the kind help of Paul Helsloot, one of our technical consultants." Aerospace seems to be rather a man’s world and now all of a sudden a lady is in charge. How was the response to that? Daniela: "If this is a man’s world? Before this I also worked in technical environments. Everyone, man or woman contributes with his or her values and unique qualities to the success of a team. I look forward to building on the successes of Kevin Fleetwoord and his team and create and even stronger team." What about the life beyond Aerospace? "I spend my time off with my family, my husband, son and daughter. We live in The Hague and I love the outdoors and enjoy going for a run. At home we speak a combination of English, Dutch and Romanian. When I went to work at Powder Coatings I mentioned to my son that this kind of coating also can go on cars. Our son asked if I could bring him a Ferrari. You can imagine what he would like now that I am part of Aerospace..." 6 Global Solutions Winter 2013 Issue 16 Reflections The Ultimate Makeover T5 Fairey Gannet In a previous Reflections article, the world’s last flying T5 Fairey Gannet was featured as a piece of history that needed attention and refurbishment. As a reminder, this aircraft affectionately known as "Janet" was the first dual control T2 Gannet "prototype" in the world and made her first flight August 16, 1954. Her first colors were overall silver with yellow bands on the wings and fuselage. These were the markings of the British military training colors. One of the first public displays of this aircraft was at the famous military trade show "Farnborough" in England, and Janet became one of the main attractions. This plane was designed for search and destroy antisubmarine, and it became the main trainer for new pilots and crew for other T2 aircraft. Only eight trainer aircraft were manufactured. Here are some fun facts: n XT752 is now officially the only surviving prototype of any historic military aircraft flying in the world. n She is the oldest Turboprop aircraft flying in the world of any type. n She is the world’s first of her type and now oldest Gannet surviving in the world of the remaining few variants left in museums. n n She is the world’s only Gannet to be owned by the UK’s Fairey factory and the last Gannet in the world to land on an aircraft carrier. She is the only historic aircraft in the world that completed a record breaking televised move by the world’s largest cargo aircraft the Ukrainian Antonov 124, then moved by freeways to her home in New Richmond, Wisconsin. When Janet was first introduced to AkzoNobel, it was recognized as a unique aircraft, but it had not aged gracefully. It had been neglected for years, and her age was apparent. Her colors were faded orange, yellow and silver, and the bomb doors showed layers of paint that peeled off in sheets. After consulting with her owner, Shannan Hendricks, it was decided to give Janet a makeover in AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings’ newest technology going from bare metal to glorious and vibrant colors. After consulting with Eric Abston, Technical Service Representative for AkzoNobel, a range of products was decided upon that would give this aircraft protection and vitality for years to come. Products of the established Alumigrip brand, designed specifically for General Aviation aircraft, were chosen to get this historic plane the look it needed for its future show worthy appearance. Specific primers, Alumigrip 10P30-5 and Alumigrip 10P8-11 were chosen for certain areas of the aircraft. In a continuing effort to use the latest technology and to introduce the best corrosion inhibiting chrome free epoxy primer, Aerodur 2100 MgRp was used on the overall aircraft in conjunction with Alumigrip 4001 Primer Surfacer. The gloss topcoat requirements called for Alumigrip 4400/4450 Base Coat/Clear Coat as they were the obvious choice for brilliant colors and highest distinction of image. In keeping to Janet’s original color designs, a military topcoat (in both liquid paint and aerosol format) was also used for several of the markings and the propellers (she has two propellers that move in opposite directions: very unusual in an aircraft). After two years of refurbishment, this piece of history was unveiled in a hangar in New Richmond, Wisconsin, on June 8, 2013. It was exciting to see this historic aircraft look as though it came right off the production finishing line. Her wings were folded to show the public just how special this piece of aviation history would be unfolded over the coming months. This T5 Fairey Gannet will be on display at several air shows for all to observe. You can certainly see the before and after pictures presented here, but for more pictures and to follow this unique aircraft’s history and refurbishment go to www.faireygannetx752.com. AkzoNobel is proud to sponsor this aircraft, and Janet now has her own Facebook page: www.facebook.com/ FaireyGannetXT752. Please take a look at the re-birth of this legend Reflections Issue 16 Winter 2013 Global Solutions 7 8 Global Solutions Winter 2013 Issue 16 Did you know? Avianca is the world’s second oldest airline still in operation (behind KLM). It is the oldest continuously operating airline in the Western Hemisphere. In 2014 Avianca will reach its 95th anniversary. Aerodur Base Coat/ Clear Coat strengthens new image Avianca Avianca, one of South America’s largest airlines, introduced their new visual identity, encompassing both TACA and Avianca’s two separate brands into one unified airline. The iconic red-topped aircraft of old is gone, and instead a modern new minimalist approach has been taken to the livery. "The well skilled painters applied the reliable Aerodur Base Coat/Clear Coat without any difficulty and the final result is stunning" Mike Suhara, Technical Service Rep AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings The new identity has been built on the symbolic power of the Condor, a symbol long associated with Avianca in a form that figuratively links South, Central and North America. The livery signals that Avianca changed from the Colombian national flag carrier to a larger, international carrier, now representing all of Latin America to the world. As for the change in the color red, they wanted the Avianca name to make a bolder statement. With red predominantly on the original livery, the actual name had to be smaller. Using more white allowed to maximize the size of the Avianca name, bringing more pride to the brand. The image of the new Avianca will be displayed in over 160 airplanes. All aircraft will be repainted in the new Avianca brand. AkzoNobel’s Mike Suhara was part of the secret mission to paint the first aircraft in the new livery as he provided on-site technical support to the highly professional paint team. Mike commented: "The painting of the aircraft was done in Bogota, Columbia in five days, with one whole day for the layout of the tail swoop. The subtlety of the tail fin’s color combination and pattern is fantastic and the new livery and brand logo look very refreshing. The aircraft is painted in Aerodur 3001/3002 Base Coat/Clear Coat. In addition to the commonly known advantages of AkzoNobel’s innovative paint system, we used less paint to get the aircraft into color compared to the use of a conventional mono coat system. The well skilled painters applied the reliable Aerodur Base Coat/ Clear Coat without any difficulty and the final result is stunning. Avianca is very proud of this new look." We congratulate Avianca Holdings S.A. with the new stage in their business development under the commercial brand Avianca and with the beautiful new visual standards. We look forward to see the vivid colors and mirror gloss finish on the first Boeing 787 Dreamliners that will be added to the Avianca fleet Reflections Reflections Issue 16 Global Solutions Winter 2013 No.10 for Qatar AkzoNobel’s Base Coat/Clear Coat system completes Qatar’s 10th A330 (and does it ahead of time) Aerobase Base Coat/ Clear Coat n Latest Technology n Available at both OEM and MRO n Reduced process time n Excellent appearance and gloss retention n Increased length of coating life he painting of the most recent A330 of Qatar Airways was completed in Dublin at Eirtech Aviation, a whopping 16 days ahead of schedule. The expert finish of the A330 strengthens the reputation of the Aerobase Base Coat/Clear Coat brand and is a demonstration of the team work between AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings staff and the paint specialists at Eirtech Aviation. On Eirtech’s recommendation and based on the longstanding partnership between themselves and AkzoNobel, Qatar Airways decided to apply the Base Coat/Clear Coat system to their entire fleet for the first time. The relationship between AkzoNobel and Qatar has been a continuous one for over a decade, something the team at AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings is both proud of and grateful for. Qatar Airways has been on clear coat systems since 2003. It now is a 7 stars airline with high expectations in terms of both quality and support. AkzoNobel offers the most innovative paint technology while still meeting the very high demands in terms of paint performance and quality. Qatar Airways, one of the most prestigious airlines in the world, pride themselves on the appearance of their aircraft. Qatar Airways switched over to BC/CC, and benefits from shorter downtimes, reduced layer thickness (meaning less weight, meaning less fuel consumption), while not sacrificing on quality 9 10 Global Solutions Winter 2013 Issue 16 Did you know? The Black Knights has its namesake of origin from the game of chess where the Knight is widely regarded as the most aggressive, flexible and manoeuvrable of all the chess pieces, having both the ability to breach barriers and move in nimble and strategically important directions, thus exemplifying flexibility and precision manoeuvrability as personified by the pilots of the team during their aerial manoeuvres. New paint scheme for RSAF Black Knights at Singapore Airshow 2014 Visitors to the Singapore Airshow 2014 will be treated to a visual feast by the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) Black Knights aerobatics team as they perform their precise maneuvers and tight formations using six of RSAF’s F-16C Fighting Falcons. The F-16C Fighting Falcon is one of the most sophisticated and advanced multi-role fighter aircraft in the world today. The spanking new paint scheme for the Black Knights was recently unveiled at Tengah Air Base. While the aircraft kept with the familiar colors of red and white – the colors of Singapore’s national flag, what’s new are the crescent moon and five stars painted on the top of the fighter jets. Chief of Air Force, Major-General Hoo Cher Mou said, "The Black Knights’ precision, tight formations, skillful and spectacular maneuvers are a source of great pride for a small nation like ours." The aircraft were recently painted in AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings 58 Series at the ST Aero facility in Singapore and comprehensively supported by our local distributor Hypercoat. The A320 was fitted with fuel-saving wing tips; sharklets, and painted with AkzoNobel’s environmentally progressive Aerobase Base Coat/Clear Coat system. Airbus, focusing largely on sustainability, utilizes the Base Coat/Clear Coat paint system as it requires less paint and less solvent. For their customers the eco-efficient painting process also means that less detergent will be needed when washing the aircraft. The AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings team is extremely proud of the reliable Aerobase Base Coat/Clear Coat system being selected to provide extra gloss to another historic milestone the 8000th aircraft delivered by Airbus Congratulations Airbus on reaching this major milestone! Airbus A350 Comes to life with AkzoNobel colors... One of the fun aspects of working at AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings is seeing your coatings on display on a wide variety of aircraft liveries. Team members just have to look to the sky to see the shiny and colorful results. It’s always a source of pride to see your work on display – and as far as exposure goes, an airport is also pretty high on the list of public places. For Aerospace Coatings it’s becoming an increasingly regular occurrence, as the team is asked more and more frequently to supply paint for first editions of customer aircraft. Recently this has included the Airbus A350, which features the Aerobase Base Coat/Clear Coat system (BC/CC). The aircraft took off for its maiden voyage on 14 June 2013. The Aerospace team in Sassenheim celebrated the milestone with cakes at a small gathering in Sassenheim. "We supplied the paint for the first aircraft that will be flown," explains Jérôme Mancy, EADS Global Key Account Manager for AkzoNobel. "The aircraft was painted in Toulouse – it’s the first Airbus with both fuselage and wing structures made primarily of composites. We have a very good relationship with Airbus – many of their aircraft are painted with AkzoNobel coatings." Airbus, focusing largely on sustainability, has made the decision to utilize the Base Coat/Clear Coat paint system as it requires less paint and less solvent. These savings are a great endorsement of AkzoNobel’s continued commitment to delivering sustainable solutions to customers worldwide. After the successful maiden flight, the A350 made it’s way to the Paris Airshow at Le Bourget, where spectators welcomed the innovative wide-body jet liner with cheers and applause. The aircraft are supplied to high-profile airlines as Cathay Pacific, Etihad and US Airways – although Jérôme stresses that they don’t choose the coating supplier themselves. "The airline decides which system it wants to use – such as Aerobase Base Coat/Clear Coat or Aviox – but not who provides it. I think it underlines what an excellent system AkzoNobel’s BC/CC is that Airbus likes it so much," he says. "It’s much quicker and simpler to use for complex liveries with different colors; with the old system, where the high solid and gloss were already mixed, if you damaged any part of the paintwork you had to start again. With AkzoNobel’s BC/CC you don’t apply gloss until you’re ready with the colored Base Coat" Issue 16 Winter 2013 Global Solutions 13 © Airbus SAS 2013 - All rights reserved. Reflections "With AkzoNobel’s BC/CC you don’t apply gloss until you’re ready with the colored Base Coat" Jérôme Mancy, EADS Global Key Account Manager 14 Global Solutions Winter 2013 Issue 16 Aerofine joins the Military Following the successful introduction of the Aerofine range of products for the maintenance and refurbishment of cabin internal surfaces in EMEA, customers in the Asian Pacific Region have also started to embrace the advantages of the water based Aerofine paint solutions. World class aviation maintenance center Thailand Aviation Industries Ltd (TAI) has painting facilities in Bangkok and in the Nakhon Sawan province. For many years they have used a wide range of AkzoNobel coatings for the maintenance of commercial, military and specialist VIP aircraft. The close working relationship of AkzoNobel’s technical team and TAI management has delivered very successful exterior projects including the Air Asia ‘Thai Fight’ special livery pictured on this page of Reflections. As early adaptor to the water based Aerofine paint system, TAI engineers experienced the HSE and technical benefits of AkzoNobel’s new product range for aircraft interiors following the smooth completion of an Airbus A330 interior at neighboring MRO customer Thai Airways. Based on the satisfactory results, August this year saw the first time application of Aerofine to the interior of a military aircraft in Thailand. The specified one off colors and different gloss levels used in the custom ARVO 748 were developed by the AkzoNobel color lab in Sassenheim, The Netherlands. Mr. Niphon Niyomgool, Hangar Maintenance Manager and his team commented on how easy it is to apply the water based Aerofine compared to other conventional products. Adding the improved health and safety for employees and low VOC levels, the benefits are obvious. Later this month the interiors of a Douglas C-47A Dakota and a C130 Hercules will also be refurbished with the Aerofine cabin coatings. It goes without saying that the team of AkzoNobel SE Asia is extremely proud to work closely together with this high profile customer and to support delivery of outstanding liveries and interiors Reflections Reflections Issue 16 Global Solutions 15 Winter 2013 Did you know? In Asia, the tiger is highly revered and seen as a symbol of strength, power, courage and energy. Travelers in Asia can now look forward to a brand new Tigerair, as one of Asia’s leading no-frills carriers unveiled its new identity on the 3rd of July at Singapore’s Changi Airport. Sharing his vision at the unveiling, Koay Peng Yen, Group CEO of Tiger Airways Holdings, said, "Leisure travel is all about accumulating great experiences and memories. We hope that the new Tigerair can represent relaxation, joy and adventure in the hearts of our customers." The new face of Tigerair has a fresh and upbeat look that embodies its brand personality warm, passionate and genuine. The leaping tiger that used to be the main element of Tigerair’s logo has made way for contemporary gray rounded font typography, with blushing orange accents. In conjunction with the unveiling, Tigerair flew 100 students from Metta School, a school for students with mild disabilities, along Turkish Airlines’ global reach represented at Heathrow with 50 caregivers, on a dedicated flight to the Island of Penang in Malaysia, made possible through a partnership with the National Trades Union Congress ("NTUC"). About 80% of the students who participated in the trip have never been on an aircraft before. Explaining the reason behind the brand refresh, Mr Koay said, "We have initiated a series of changes since late last year, and this brand identity should be seen as a reinforcement of our commitment towards a better and bolder Tigerair." AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings is very proud to have been the preferred supplier to Tigerair since the airlines first inception in 2004. Our latest generation exterior Base Coat/Clear Coat system, Aerobase Base Coat and Aviox UVR Clear Coat was specified by Tigerair to provide the fastest possible turnaround times during maintenance checks, so as to enable their aircraft to return to revenue earning flights earlier. Additionally the proven long term gloss, color retention and outstanding good looks gave Tigerair the ultimate protection for their re-brand investment and new livery image The Istanbul based airline, established in 1933, celebrated its 219 destinations network over 98 countries by creating a giant sphere at London Heathrow, reminding visitors of the airline’s global reach. The steel built construction includes a glass reinforced plastic globe surrounded by replica aeroplanes, graphically displaying Turkish Airlines’ multinational destinations and forming part of the renovations at Heathrow. AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings’ technical staff provided support for the painting of the model aircraft to ensure Turkish Airlines look their best around the world, around the clock, no matter the size of the aircraft 16 Technical Winter 2013 Issue 16 Making a magazine like Reflections is (obviously) a lot of work. The reward comes not only from actually creating a really nice magazine. There are some days that a story and particularly pictures float by which leave us in awe of the sheer beauty of aircraft in general and (of course) the way our coatings make them look. It gives us a sense of pride and happiness to be in the business of making paint for aircraft. They are the kind of pictures which can only make you think "damn, that looks great!" Reflections Reflections Issue 16 Technical 17 Winter 2013 his is what happened when Alain Viard, Sales Manager in France sent us pictures of a funny little airplane, painted in the AkzoNobel Base Coat/Clear Coat system, flying above the stunning countryside of France, it looked fabulous (both the plane and the countryside) and we wanted to know more. As it turned out this is a highly innovate aircraft with a special story. Crispin Brown, international sales agent for Silence Aircraft (and avid aviator) explains: "This highly innovative Silence Twister aerobatic single seat aircraft was developed by Silence Aircraft in Verl Germany (silence-aircraft.de/en/). This version is powered by a UL Power 260iSA engine of 107 hp and is certified for both positive and negative aerobatics." "Sharing the beautiful elliptic wing of the Spitfire, the design was inspired by the designers’ long experience (and international success) with aerobatic radio controlled models." "The new French demonstrator and certification aircraft recently had its first flight over the glorious countryside of Provence in the hands of Didier Ilcikas, the well-known test pilot. The first flight and subsequent test program have progressed perfectly." "The technical advisors for France chose the white (from AkzoNobel’s Base Coat/Clear Coat system) for the extraordinary finish and the AkzoNobel Toulouse support team provided much appreciated assistance. The quality of the finish is admired by all." "The Silence Twister has a honeycomb structure with carbon fiber skins, Nomex core and glass fiber inner face. The cockpit is designed as a safety cell (similar to Formula 1 cars) and is manufactured in aramid as are the impact risk areas such as the wheel fairings." The test program is nearly finished and the aircraft will now be showing off its aerobatic qualities. Not only does it look superb but all who have flown the aircraft return with a huge smile and an immediate desire to fly more! Easy to do when only using 14 liters per hour at 130 knots; extraordinarily economic operating performance" 18 Our People Winter 2013 Issue 16 Outdoor4Disabled vehicles shine again with Aerospace Coatings Outdoor4Disabled is a non-profit organization with a goal to enable people with a disability / handicap to still enjoy the outdoors, specifically the beach. The foundation has two vehicles, a beach caterpillar and a school bus to use for these outings. Of course, the elements (particularly sand and salt water) can wreak havoc on car paint. Given that aerospace coatings can withstand more "violence" than ordinary paints (Skydrol anyone?), the foundation approached AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings for help and support in getting the two vehicles repainted. The ACC team spoke with delegates from Outdoor4Disabled and, always enjoying a good challenge, said "yes, we can." The paint was offered to the foundation and the next challenge (space for the repaint) was overcome with the help of a local companies, who could provide the space for all the parts (and believe us, a beach caterpillar has a lot of parts). ACC and R&D team members spent a lot of time on the actual painting (all parts needed work) and both vehicles look there very best again. The team will keep a watchful eye on the vehicles to make sure they stay in tip top shape. Several of the AkzoNobel participants enjoyed a ride at the unveiling of the revamped bus and caterpillar, wishing the foundation a successful season for fun outings and happy faces Reflections Reflections Issue 16 Winter 2013 Our People 19 20 Our People Winter 2013 Issue 16 Reflections IntAircoat Lisbon kzoNobel Aerospace Coatings made its mark at this year’s IntAircoat event. At AkzoNobel we are reinforcing our position as a global leader in sustainability by launching a new concept which captures the essence of our strategy to deliver more value from fewer resources. Known as Planet Possible, the concept is not only designed to drive innovation and promote radical efficiency, but will also help us to inspire employees, customers and suppliers and build on AkzoNobel’s number one ranking for the last two years on the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices. AkzoNobel’s Corporate Director of Sustainability, Andre Veneman, said that Planet Possible represents the next significant leap forward in the company’s ongoing journey to connect value creation to resource efficiency.
