Route 5 - The Heart of Wembley Route Highlights This is a short circular walk, beginning and ending at the iconic Wembley Stadium, including Brent’s most notable sites and King Edward VII park. 1 Start at Brent Civic Centre on Engineers Way. Walk through Wembley Arena Square 2 and onto the London Designer Outlet 3. Cut through here to Wembley Hill Road 4. Cross here and walk up Dagmar Avenue 5. Turn left onto 6 Park Lane and then right into 7 King Edward VII Park. Walk around the park and out the exit you came in, turning left back onto 8 Park Lane, right onto 9 Dagmar Avenue, over Wembley Hill Rd and back through the designer outlet 10, past the arena 11 and back to the Civic Centre where the route ends 12. Places of Interest/Heritage Brent Civic Centre and Library: opened in June 2013 and is home to the council offices and Wembley Library. Brent Civic Centre is officially recognised as the greenest public building in the UK, through its BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ accreditation. Wembley Stadium: home of England Football, stands on the site which has been used for football since the 1880s. The ‘twin towers’ stadium initially opened as the British Empire Exhibition Stadium in 1923 and had been built exclusively for the Empire Exhibition in 1924 after which it was due to be demolished. The electronic scoreboard and roof were added in 1963. The stadium was closed in 2000, demolished in 2003 and re-opened in 2007, with its iconic arch that can be seen from all over London. Wembley Arena: was built in 1934 for the British Empire Games, and originally housed a swimming pool, which was last used in the 1948 olympics. The arena was rebuilt in early 21st century as part of extensive regeneration of the area, and opened in 2006. With 12,500 seats, it’s the second largest indoor arena in London, and regularly hosts sporting and music events. London Designer Outlet opened in late 2013 and houses shopping, restaurants and cinema under Wembley Stadium. White Horse Bridge: is just off route and is the footbridge that crosses Wembley Stadium railway station. Opened in 2006, it’s named after a grey (though appearing white in old blackand-white photographs and films) Metropolitan Police horse, named ‘Billy’, who was used to restore order after the 200,000 spectators who turned up to watch the 1923 FA Cup Final all took to the pitch before kick off. King Edward Vll Park: King Edward VII Park was opened to the public on 4 July 1914. The land which has become the park was purchased by the Council in memory of the late king and to replace the loss of Wembley Park as an open space. The park was formally laid out for sport and leisure activities and many of the facilities still exist today including the well preserved flower garden. This is a very popular park with the locals and is understandably well used. As you head back to the tube, you will see Fountain Studios on your left on Fulton Road. Home to the ‘X-Factor’, ‘Pop Idol’ and ‘Britain’ Got Talent’, it’s one of Brent’s best known attractions. Opened initially in 1985 in Surrey, they moved in 1993 and refurbished the once famous Rediffusion studio which was built in 1960. A tv studio has occupied this site since 1926. If you fancy a longer walk, the circular path around the stadium is 1km, or about another 15 minutes.
