Soprano Donata D’Annunzio Lombardi Makes Triumphant
Return to Detroit Opera House
By Sandra Tornberg
Soprano Donata D’Annunzio Lombardi returned to Detroit to sing the role of
Cio-Cio-San in the Michigan Opera Theatre’s fabulous production of “Madame Butterfly”
on November 21 and 23. Ms. D’Annunzio Lombardi gave a brilliant performance as the
trusting and faithful fifteen-year-old former geisha who marries the shallow U.S. Navy Lieutenant Benjamin Franklin Pinkerton, performed by tenor Adam Luther.
Madame Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini, with libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa,
had its premiere at La Scala di Milano on February 17, 1904. It was not very successful largely
because late completion did not allow adequate time for rehearsals. Puccini went on to revise
the opera five times.
The opera is a showcase for the soprano and features one of the most popular arias in the
soprano repertoire Un bel di (“One beautiful day”), exquisitely delivered by Ms. D’Annunzio
Lombardi. According to Michael Yashinsky, “Puccini realized the lack of balance in his principals’ seriousness of sound and sentiment. As he wrote to a conductor friend while he was
composing the opera in 1903, ‘There is a great part for the prima donna, not much for the
tenor…’ “. In fact, at the end of the performance Mr. Luther was booed, not because of his
singing, but because he had performed the role of his character, a cad, so well.
Butterfly waits patiently for three years for Pinkerton to return, and in the meantime has
borne a son. Return he does, with his “real” American wife in tow. Finally realizing her destiny, Butterfly reads the inscription on her father ‘s knife, the one that he had used to commit
suicide “To die with honor when one can no longer live with honor”. Ms. D’Annunzio
Lombardi’s Con onor muore was so beautifully delivered and moving that, as they say, “there
wasn’t a dry eye in the house.”
Ms. D’Annunzio Lombardi, who was born in Avezzano in the province of L’Aquila in
Abruzzo, is considered one of today’s leading interpreters of Puccini heroines. (Cont on Pg.3)

FADM LASAGNA COMPETION
STIRS UP HEATED CONTEST.
The Federazione Abruzzese del Michigan held its Annual Food competition on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 during the
monthly membership meeting at the Italian American Cultural Center. This year’s featured dish was Lasagna, a staple of
Italian cusine for many years. Prepared in as many ways as there are Regions of Italy, this contest pitted one village or city
of Abruzzo against the other. There were a total of thirteen (13) contestents. Some of the different locations were Opi,
Chieti, Gagliano Aterno, Gorno Sicoli, Turrivalignani and Vacri.
The meal was brought into the IACS with their own foil pans. Each contestant was given a number. The entries were
then placed to the corresponding number the contestants were given. Only the contestant knew which number was theirs.
The judges did not know who submitted the meal. The judges rated each entry by five categories. Aroma, Eye appeal,
Taste, After taste and Texture. Each element was rated 1 to 5 according to the following code. 1) I don’t even want to
taste it. 2)I can’t recommend it. 3) Good enough for non-Italians. 4) I can recommend this. 5) Just like mamma’s. The
judges tasted each sample with caution, and subtly they rolled the forkful in their mouths like tasting fine wine. Some were
visited twice. Upon conclusion, the judges tallied their scores and came up with the winners. And the First place winner
was Maria Guido. Second Place was Marcella Paglia and Third Place was Lydia Strussione. Congratulations to all.Special
Thanks to this years committee Chair Sarah Corsetti for organizing the event.

Alfred Zampa
~
Alfred Zampa (March 12, 1905 in Selby, California – April 23, 2000) was a United States bridge
worker who played an integral role in the construction of numerous San Francisco Bay Area bridges
during the early twentieth century.[1] His family is from Ortucchio, L’Aqulia. He is most notable
for being one of the first people to survive falling off theGolden Gate Bridge.[2] He is a charter member of the Half Way to Hell Club, whose members are the men who fell from the Golden Gate
Bridge and were saved by the nets.[3]In 1987 writer Isabelle Maynard wrote and produced a play titled
"The Ace" chronicling Zampa’s exploits on the Golden Gate Bridge and the formation of the Half
Way to Hell Club. "The Ace" was based on Zampa's life and was advertised as an "iron worker’s
story of heroism, risk and recognition on the Golden Gate Bridge.” It was well-received on San Francisco stages, especially during the bridge’s 50th anniversary year. The Alfred Zampa Memorial
Bridge is named in his honor. The new bridge replaced the 1927 span of the Carquinez Bridge which
Al helped construct, beginning at the young age of 20. Al Zampa retired from the position of Iron
Worker at the age of 65 in 1970, and died at the age of 95 in Tormey, California.
The Carquinez Bridge refers to parallel bridges spanning the Carquinez Strait, forming part
ofInterstate 80 between Crockett and Vallejo, in the U.S.
state of California. The name originally referred to a single cantilever bridge built in 1927, helping to
form a direct route between San Francisco and Sacramento. A second parallel cantilever bridge was
completed in 1958 to deal with the increased traffic. Later, seismic problems of the 1927 span led to
the construction and 2003 opening of a replacement: a suspension bridge officially called the Alfred
ZampaMemorial Bridge. Currently, the Alfred Zampa Memorial Bridge carries westbound Traffic
from Vallejo to Crockett, and the 1958 cantilever span carries eastbound traffic.
In 2003, as a resolution to seismic problems of the aging 1927 span
brought to light after the Loma Prieta earthquake, a new suspension
bridge was opened to replace it, at a cost of $240 million.[2] This new bridge was named the Alfred
Zampa Memorial Bridge, after an ironworker who worked on a number of the San Francisco Bay
Area bridges, including the Golden Gate Bridge and the original 1927 Carquinez span. This span features a pedestrian and bicycle path, part of a bike trail which it is hoped will eventually circle the entire
Bay Area. The span measures 0.66 miles (1,060 m). The bridge was dedicated on November 8, 2003
and opened for traffic on November 11. (Originally, the plan was to dedicate the bridge on November
15, but complications involving when just-recalled Governor Gray Davis would have to transfer
power to Arnold Schwarzenegger resulted in the date being moved. The coins minted to commemorate the event have the old date on them.[3][broken citation]). The 1927 span was dismantled in 2007, after it was temporarily used to hold eastbound traffic while the eastbound span underwent a seismic retrofit, deck and superstructure rehabilitation, and painting to extend its
serviceable life.[4] During demolition, the 3,000-pound bronze bell atop one of the Carquinez Bridge piers was removed and placed into
storage. The bell will eventually be displayed in a new museum to be built at the Oakland end of the San Francisco – Oakland Bay
Bridge.
he new suspension bridge, to the west of the earlier bridges, has spans of 147 m, 728 m, and 181 m. Built by the Joint Venture consisting of Flatiron Structures (Longmont, Co.), FCI Constructors (Benicia, Ca.), and Cleveland Bridge & Engineering Company of Darlington, England, it consists of the south anchorage, a transition pier, two towers (South and North towers), and the north anchorage.
The towers are each founded on two footings, which are each supported by six vertical, 3-metre-diameter (9.8 ft) steel shells infilled
with reinforced concrete, followed by 2.7-metre-diameter (8.9 ft) drilled shafts in rock (i.e., cast-in-drilled hole, or CIDH, piles). The
total length of the CIDH pile at the South Tower is approximately 89 m, with about 43 m of drilled shaft in rock. The total length of
the CIDH pile at the North Tower ranges from 49 to 64 m, with about 16 to 26 m of drilled shaft in rock. The design parameters used
for the South Tower piles were later confirmed by a pile load test. Additional field investigations during construction revealed significant variations in rock conditions at the North Tower, resulting in the redesign of the length of the piles. Major construction challenges
encountered during construction of the South Tower piles, and the revised construction procedure (i.e., under-reaming) used by the
constructor to mitigate caving.

L'EUROPARAZZISMO: SCLOCCO, PROBLEMATICA CHE INVESTE TUTTA
PRESENTATI RISULTATI DEL PROGETTO COMUNITARIO LIGHT ON (REGFLASH) L'Aquila, 27 nov.
All'incontro dell'Aquila era
