OFFICE HOURS: Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 4:30 pm
The slate of nominees for our Board in the election at
the October Annual General Meeting has been submitted and is posted in the Centre. Thank you to those
who were called and were so very supportive and encouraging even if they were not available to serve this
year. Those who accepted are to be thanked and appreciated. Of course more nominations will be welcomed and accepted from the floor at the meeting.
The dedication and competence of every Board Member and Activity leader is critical to the development of
our Centre. Our vibrant 55+ Centre is the envy of
many towns and communities. Let's keep it that way!

VACANT
** Remember… anyone can be nominated for any
position from the floor at the AGM.**
Peter Magnusson
Hey everyone! Hope your September was not too
cold and wet.
The October General Meeting on Tuesday October 7th at 7:00 pm is fast approaching. At this
meeting we will be electing the new Board of Directors for the 2014-2015 year. We have a full slate of
candidates that are eager to serve. We still need a
Kitchen Director. Anyone who would like to take on
the challenge of kitchen director, please step forward.
Please remember anyone may be nominated from
the floor. We would welcome any and all members
who would like to run for any position on the Board to
put their name forward.
I would like to take this time to thank the board members who will not be serving this coming year. They
are Rod Allen, Nancy Allen, Linda Cochrane, Gloria
Mattson and Lynne Wall. For various personal reasons they have chosen not to run this term. Thank
you for your service on the Board.
Coming up this October is the fall supper on October
19th. This is one of our major fund raisers and we
can use all the volunteers we can get. If you are interested in volunteering labor, donating or baking
pies, please sign up on the sheet by the Grand Room
doors.
Don’t forget to mark your calendars for this year’s
Christmas Party on November 29th. Tickets are still
only $25 for a full Turkey Dinner and entertainment
by Thistle. Get your tickets early as we sold out last
year and there were some disappointed people.
I hope to see you all at the General Meeting and
working at the Fall Supper!

Things overheard at the Bridge Club
• The difference between genius and stupidity is that
genius has its limits.
• A player who can't defend accurately should try to
be declarer.
• Your play was much better today, and so were your
excuses.
We have had an issue on Fridays with several late
arrivals to play cards (both bridge and canasta).
Noise levels have been very high while arranging to
settle them in.
A reminder to both the Bridge and Canasta that all
players should be considerate of those who organize
the activity, and please arrive well ahead of play time
of 1:00 pm.
When both groups have their full slate the general
noise level is a problem to some. We will work to
make some changes to accommodate all our players. One thing to note is that many are getting
harder of hearing and a high noise level makes it
very difficult at any function.
CRIBBAGE
Office
DO YOU PLAY CRIBBAGE?
“Do you want to spend an evening alone or
would you rather come out and play Cribbage??”
We play each Thursday and start at 7:00 p.m. sharp
so please arrive by 6:45 p.m.
We play 8 games and finish at 9:30 p.m.
$3.00 for Members, $5.00 for Non Members.
Come join the fun!

MONDAY AFTERNOON CANASTA
Activity Leader Germaine Gougeon
Come and join our friendly group. We start our random team selection at 1pm Sharp so come early,
get your coffee and meet and greet until then. We
continue playing until 3:30 to 4:00 depending on
how the game is going. See you there.
FRIDAY CANASTA
Activity Leader Sharon Carpenter
We play at 1:00 p.m. Sharp every Friday and the
door is always open to newcomers. We can play 3
or 4 to a table, so there’s lots of room for everyone.
Come on down for some laughs and good times.
“Chase the Ace”
Chase the Ace has officially ended. It was good to try
something new but we found out that this wasn’t the right
game for New Horizons.
KITCHEN NEWS
Sharon Peichl
We are off and running to keep up with the busy fall
season at our Centre. September is the kick off with
a very busy time in the kitchen to serve the Floor
Curling crowd. I think they are 'fed up' !! The lunch
teams are set on their schedule now, with a few adjustments for winter holidays as usual if opportunity
arises!
We are trying to build a new list of spares to call
when we are short for the Friday service or prep a
day ahead. Not a lot of calls, and not a lot of work,
but very necessary to keep the teams supported
with enough help. Please be sure your name is on
our list if you are able to offer some of your time.
Speak to the office if you wish to serve on a team
regularly.
Most of us love to enjoy the Friday lunch scene
along with our favorite activity. It is essential now
that some new and younger (that's a fact – most of
us team leaders have been leading for many years!)
members must step up to ensure the program continues. We have offered Friday lunches for about 14
years. All volunteer driven. Please offer your comments or suggestions to enhance and maintain this
favorite friendly program.
Next big kitchen event is the Fall Supper. Posters
are around to inform you all of volunteer and donor
opportunities. Add peeling potatoes and carrots to
your list. Drop in on Sunday morning at 9 a.m. with
your favorite peeler and join a gang for an hour to
peel and cut. Coffee is free as always. Its like an old
time 'peeling bee' when we all chip in to get it done
fast!! See you all Fridays!!
Two penguins walk into a bar... which is stupid
because the second one should have seen it.
BUILDING & MAINTENANCE
Everett Lloyd
This month one of the two water heaters in the main
kitchen was replaced as it was leaking. Now both the
water heaters are new and should last for many years
to come.
With the winter coming on fast, plans are being made
for snow removal for the Centre.
Other than that, the building has survived into another
month.

How To Help Around The House
How to Grow Pumpkins
Philip was enjoying the second week of a twoweek vacation the same way he had enjoyed the
first week: by doing as little as possible.
Farmer Smith was driving his tractor along the
road with a trailer load of fertilizer. Alex a little
boy of nine was playing ball in his yard; he saw
the farmer and asked:
“What've you got in your trailer?”
“Manure,” farmer Smith replied.
“What are you going to do with it?” asked Alex.
“Put it on my pumpkins,” answered the farmer.
Alex replied, “You ought to come and eat with us,
we put ice-cream on our pumpkin pie.”
A Funny, Witty and Short Story of Wisdom Senility
An elderly couple, John and Maureen Barnden were
celebrating their sixtieth wedding anniversary. The
couple had married as childhood sweethearts and had
moved back to their old neighborhood, just outside
Burlington in the State of Vermont, shortly after they
retired.
Holding hands, John and Maureen strolled back to
their old school. It was not locked, so they went in and
found the old desk they'd shared, where John had
carved "I love you, Moz."
On their way back home, a bag of money fell out of
an armored car, practically landing at their feet; Maureen quickly picked it up, and not sure what to do with
it, they took it home. There, she counted the money:
seventy-thousand dollars!
John pronounced, 'We've got to give it back, Moz.'
Maureen replied quickly, “Finders keepers, sweetheart,” and she put the money back in the bag and hid
it in their attic.
The next day, two policemen were going from door to
door in their neighborhood looking for the money, and
knocked on John and Maureen's door.
“Excuse me, sorry to trouble you, but did either of
you find a bag that fell out of a Securicor van yesterday?”
Maureen responded firmly, “No.”
John retorted clearly and loudly, “She's lying. She hid
it up in the attic.”
Maureen glared and said, “Don't you believe him, he's
getting senile.”
The agents turned to John and began to question him.
One says, “Now sir, think back to yesterday and tell
us the whole story right from the beginning.”
“Well,” started John, “it was like this: when Maureen
and I were walking home from school yesterday .....”
The first policeman turns to his partner and raising his
eyes to the heavens murmurs, “Let's go, Buddy.”
He ignored his wife Paula's not-so-subtle hints
about completing certain jobs around the house,
but Philip didn't realize how much this bothered
her until the clothes dryer refused to work, the
iron shorted and the sewing machine motor
burned out in the middle of a seam. The final
straw came when she plugged in the vacuum
cleaner and nothing happened.
Paula looked so stricken that I had to offer some
consolation.

“That's OK, darling,” Philip said. “You still have
me.”
Paula looked up at him with tears in her eyes.
“Yes, Philip,” she wailed, “but you don't work
either.”

The Ones That Got Away
After a Tuesday fishing on the River Test, near
Southampton in Southern England, Trevor is walking from the pier carrying two brown trout in a
bucket.
He is approached by a Water Conservation Officer
who asks him for his fishing license.
Trevor replies to the environmentalist, “I was not
fishing and I did not catch these brown trout, they
are my pets. Every day I come down to the water
and put these fish into the water and take them for a
walk to the end of the pier and back. When I'm
ready to go I whistle and they jump back into the
bucket and we go home.”
The officer, obviously, does not believe him and he
reminds Trevor that it is illegal to fish without a
license. The fisherman turns to the warden and
says, “If you don't believe me then watch,” and he
throws the trout back into the water.
The warden says, “Now whistle to your fish and
show me that they will jump out of the water and
into the bucket.”
The fisherman turns to the officer and says, “What
fish?”

Another Season Opener has come and gone at New
Horizons 55+. In September each year New Horizons 55+ kicks off the Floor Curling season with a
bonspiel open to other 55+ Organizations around
the province. Volunteers from the Centre organize
the event and usually provide entertainment for the
suppers as well. This year’s attendance was down a
little with only 20 teams entering. The Centre managed to pull off a Ham dinner and the usual Fish Fry
Friday. Winners are listed below. Thanks to all who
participated and travelled down for the event.

Well Done Every Everyone!, Congratulations.
Last night was the annual Fall Fashion Show. What
an event it was! This year’s theme was caramel.
119 ladies were in attendance to eat the delectable
caramel treats. Johnson’s and the New Horizons’
models put on a dazzling show of new fall fashions
ranging from glamorous evening wear to cuddling at
home in front of the fire wear. We were also given a
display of packable clothes that will wash and wear
well for those trips down south. Congratulations to
the winner of the $50.00 Johnson’s gift certificate.
Remember that producing your ticket stub or a copy
of the program at Johnson’s over the next few days
will still qualify you for a discount in the store. And
don’t forget their upcoming French Dressing Clinic
and their Wonderbra Clinic.
For the first time ever we tried a Silent Auction.
Thank you to everyone who purchased tickets and
congratulations to the big winners. We had a variety
of prizes from jewellery and scarves to bird baths.
The auction proved to be really popular, with all the
tickets sold. Watch for it to happen again!
So, having cleaned up from last night’s festivities
your Social Committee is moving on to the next
event – our annual Christmas Party. It will be held
on Saturday, November 29th, 2014. We will be dining on a full course turkey dinner with entertainment
by Thistle. Tickets will be $25.00 each and will be
on sale by the end of October. Last year this event
sold out so get your tickets early.

My wife always complains. Last week she was
complaining that I never take her anywhere so
last night I booked her a table but she still wasn’t
happy. Apparently she hates snooker.
5-Pin bowling began on Sept. 18th. We have 8 full
teams plus 3 bowlers looking for full time.
We have lots of spares till Christmas, but will probably
need a few more when the Snowbirds head South.

Games.
Canada 55+ Games:
It's a biannual event involving
participants from all the provinces and territories.
This year it was held in Strathcona County, Alberta, on the outskirts of Edmonton.
Their theme was "Happiness is
Health".
There were over 2000 participants competing in over 20 sports
and activities.
If you want more general information about this year's event go
to: www.canada55plusgames2014.com
I competed in the Scrabble competition. There were 27 participants
divided into 3 divisions based on North American Scrabble Players'
Association ratings. Based on my rating I was in the B or middle
division with 10 other players. We played a 14-game modified
round robin format over 3 days. I finished with a record of 13 wins
and 1 loss. One other player had the same record, but I was
awarded the gold medal based on a bigger point spread over the
14 games.
Being part of the 150 member Team Manitoba was lots of fun. I
enjoyed the experience so much that I'm seriously thinking of participating in the event again in Brampton, ON in the summer of
2016.

So you’ve found that “free” program you were
looking for.
What catches most people is that in offering the
“free” program companies slip in one or two other
programs in the download that generally clutter up
your machine.
As you go through the download process watch for
check boxes, unclick them, they are usually toolbar
programs you don’t need.
Also watch for screens asking to “Accept” or
“Decline”, only accept the program you want, decline all of the rest.

Home again, after another trip to Shooting Star. Firstly I
would like to apologize for having to change dates for the
tour. The people who do bookings at the Casino erred and
as a result we had to change our dates. To all the people
who had to cancel we are sorry, however to those who
were able to go B&B thanks you also. My thanks to B&B
for filling the bus in Winnipeg otherwise we would have
had to cancel. Once we were on our way everyone seemed
to settle in for a nice ride on the BROTHER BEAR BUS
LINE. We had our usual shopping and spending and
looking for the winning machines. The food was great
and the weather was cool and raining on the second day.
Overall I think all had a good time and will be ready again
in November. B&B have checked into a trip to Northern

Many have been asking to go however it is about an hour
further. The cost would be $151.00 with $100.00 rebate
and $5.00 food voucher. I am going to put up a poster and
if it doesn't appear to have enough interest by October
18th we will have to cancel the trip. Be aware you do
NOT have to be a member of New Horizons to take advantage of New Horizon tours.
Any questions please don't hesitate to call me 642-9495 or

OPEN 7 DAYS
A WEEK
We held our annual membership BBQ on Thursday,
September 4th. Turns out it was the rainiest day
ever. We started very slow for attendance, but in the
end we had 126 members show up.
Being new to the position of membership, I was slow
in preparing all the food on time, unfortunately dinner
was later than planned and some guests had to wait
till the next round of hamburgers got cooked. My
apologies for that, I’ll try harder next year.
I would like to thank all the volunteers who looked
after the membership renewal process, the games,
the bar, and the cooking & cleaning.
Our club President, Peter Magnusson, and his assistant Gloria Mattson handed out the Year pins for the
members who have been here for set times. Congratulations to all of you!
Thank you Jackie Poloski for taking some pictures of
the event.
Currently we have 326 members signed up for the
new membership year which starts on October 1st,
50 of them are new to the Centre this year. We hope
to contact our new members by phone soon and
welcome them to the club.
There will be a total of 6 Early Bird draws at the
AGM on Oct. 7 for those members who have renewed their memberships before Oct. 1. There will
be 2 free memberships drawn courtesy of the New
Horizons Club. There will be two $25.00 Sobeys Gift
Certificates courtesy of Horizon Hearing. And there
will be two $50.00 Super A gift certificates courtesy
of Member John McClay in memory of Joan
McClay.

closed on Tuesdays, but generally available any other
days, you can call the office first at 642-7909 to see if
it’s free or not.
