Novenas Against Violence & For Peace
July 15 to October 3, 2015
Novenas are a very popular traditional form of prayer among those of the Catholic faith. The origin of
novenas began during the nine days the Disciples and Mary prayed together between the Ascension of
our Lord, Jesus and Pentecost Sunday. A Novena is a series of prayer recited nine days in a row or nine
hours in a row. A novena is offered as a sacrifice to God in a way of expressing devotion to God. Most
novenas are accompanied by a special prayer request or intention.
This call to prayer consists of 9 consecutive 9 day novenas (nine-day prayers) - 81 days of
intercessory prayer starting July 15 to October 3, 2015. Each novena has an intention, an opening
prayer, the novena prayers and a prayer for peace. The series of nine novenas will culminate in a prayer
vigil sponsored by The Church Federation of Greater Indianapolis on Sept. 25. The vigil will be held in
honor of families who have been affected by recent violence. The novenas will be recited at the end of the
5:30 daily mass. There will be a Eucharistic adoration at the end of each novena.
Instruction:
The opening prayer and the peace prayer both to be recited daily for the 81 days, and the novena prayer
related to the particular novena being prayed during that nine day period of prayer. State the
“Intentions” of each novena daily before starting.
PRAYER FOR PEACE
To recite DAILY at the end of every day's Novena
--St. Francis of Assisi (1181-1226)

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love,
Where there is injury, pardon
Where there is doubt, faith,
Where there is despair, hope,
Where there is darkness, light,
Where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much
seek to be consoled as to console,
not so much to be understood as to understand,
not so much to be loved, as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
it is in dying that we awake to eternal life.
Novena 1
July 15 – July 23, 2014
Novena to the Holy Spirit for enlightenment to open hearts to turn toward peace rather than
violence
Begin with the following Prayer….
THE PRAYER COME HOLY SPIRIT (recite daily)
Come Holy Spirit,
fill the hearts of your faithful
and kindle in them the fire of your love.
Send forth your Spirit
and they shall be created.
And You shall renew the face of the earth.
O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit,
did instruct the hearts of the faithful,
grant that by the same Holy Spirit
we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations,
Through Christ Our Lord.
Page
PRAYER FOR THE SEVEN GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT (recite daily)
Christ Jesus, before ascending into heaven,
You promised to send the
Holy Spirit to Your apostles and disciples.
Grant that the same Spirit may perfect in our lives
the work of Your grace and love.
Grant us the Spirit of Fear Of The Lord that we may be
filled with a loving reverence toward You.
the Spirit of Piety that we may find peace and fulfillment
in the service of God while serving others;
the Spirit of Fortitude that we may bear our cross with You
and, with courage, overcome the obstacles
that interfere with our salvation;
the Spirit of Knowledge that we may know You and know
ourselves and grow in holiness;
the Spirit of Understanding to enlighten our minds with
the light of Your truth;
the Spirit of Counsel that we may choose the surest way
of doing Your will, seeking first the Kingdom;
Grant us the Spirit of Wisdom that we may aspire to the
things that last forever;
Teach us to be Your faithful disciples and animate us in
every way with Your Spirit.
Amen.
2
Amen.
Recite the prayer of the appropriate day...
Day 1 – July 15: Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit
Almighty and eternal God, send forth Your Spirit
who brought order from chaos at the beginning of
the universe and peace to the Lord’s disciples.
Grant that I, as your creation, baptized in Your
Spirit, may be filled with the seven gifts so that I
may forever do Your will and renew the face of the
earth. Amen.
Day 2 – July 16: Spirit of Awe (Fear of the Lord)
Come, O Blessed Spirit of Awe, fill me with
devotion to God alone. In the Risen Christ, I
welcome You, O Spirit of Truth, whom the Father
sends in Jesus’ name. Wash clean the sinful soul
and rain down Your grace that we may be one with
the Church in fidelity to our Lord Jesus Christ.
Amen
Day 3 – July 17: Spirit of Piety (Holiness)
Come, O Blessed Spirit of Piety, possess my heart.
Enkindle therein such a love for God that I may find
satisfaction only in His service, and for His sake
lovingly submit to all legitimate authority.
Amen.
Day 4 – July 18: Spirit of Fortitude (Strength)
Come, O Blessed Spirit of Fortitude, uphold my
soul in time of trouble and adversity. Sustain my
efforts after holiness, strengthen my weakness, and
give me courage against all the assaults of my
enemies that I may never be overcome and
separated from You, my God and Greatest Good.
Amen
Day 5 – July 19: Spirit of Knowledge
Come, O Blessed Spirit of Knowledge, and grant
that I may perceive the will of the Father. Show
me the nothingness of earthly things that I may
realize their vanity and use them only for Your
glory and my own salvation, looking ever beyond
them to You and Your eternal rewards. Amen.
Day 6 – July 20: Spirit of Understanding
Come, O Spirit of Understanding, and enlighten our
minds, that we may appreciate and see more fully
what we proclaim by faith, and may merit at least to
see the eternal light in Your light, and in the light of
glory to have a clear vision of the most Blessed
Holy Trinity. Amen.
Day 7 – July 21: Spirit of Counsel
Come, O Spirit of Counsel, help and guide me in all
my ways, that I may always do Your holy will. Make
my thoughts holy, my love pure, and my works
pleasing to God. Incline my heart to that which is
good; turn it away from all that is evil, and direct me
by the straight path of Your commandments to that
goal of eternal life for which I long. Amen.
Day 8 – July 22: Spirit of Wisdom
Come, O Blessed Spirit of Wisdom, strengthen my
faith, increase my hope, and perfect my charity.
Father, enlighten us each day in the silence of your
hearts to discern the voice of Your Spirit, to do what
He asks of us, and to understand the gifts He freely
gives us. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Day 9 – July 23: Fruits of the Holy Spirit
Grant that I may be forever open to Jesus’ invitation
to “Receive the Holy Spirit!” Father, open our hearts
to accept Your forgiveness for our sins and to offer
that same forgiveness to those whom we feel have
offended us. For merciful forgiveness is the
essence of Your love revealed in Your Son. Come,
O Divine Spirit, fill my heart with Your Heavenly
Fruits – Your charity, joy, peace, patience,
gentleness, goodness, faithfulness, mildness, and
temperance, that I may merit to be united eternally
with You in the love of the Father and the Son.
Amen.

but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Novena to: St Dominic Savio, Patron Saint of Juvenile delinquents
Intention: For young people to see the value in human life
+ In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Come to my aid, O God. O Lord, make haste to help me.

grant my requests, and pardon my sins. Amen.
Prayer to St. Dominic Savio
Dear Saint Dominic, you spent your short life totally for love of Jesus and His
Mother. Help youth today to realize the importance of God in their lives. You
became a saint through fervent participation in the sacraments; enlighten parents
and children to the importance of frequent confession and Holy Communion. At a
young age you meditated on the sorrowful Passion of Our Lord. Obtain for us the
grace of a fervent desire to suffer for love of Him.
We desperately need your intercession to protect today's children from the snares
of the world. Watch over them and lead them on the narrow road to Heaven. Ask
God to give us the grace to sanctify our daily duties by performing them perfectly
out of love for Him. Remind us of the necessity of practicing virtue especially in
times of trial.

Saint Joseph, I, your unworthy child, greet you. You are the faithful protector and

Glorious Saint Joseph, spouse of the Immaculate Virgin, obtain for me a pure, humble,
charitable mind, and perfect resignation to the divine Will. Be my guide, my father,
and my model through life that I may merit to die as you did in the arms of Jesus and Mary.
Loving Saint Joseph, faithful follower of Jesus Christ, I raise my heart to you to implore your powerful
intercession in obtaining from the Divine Heart of Jesus all the graces necessary for my spiritual and
temporal welfare, particularly the grace of a happy death, and the special grace I now implore:
(Mention novena intention, as well as your own intentions) - For families to become school of love
Guardian of the Word Incarnate, I feel confident that your prayers in my behalf will be graciously heard
before the throne of God. Amen.
Memorare
Remember, most pure spouse of Mary, ever Virgin, my loving protector, Saint Joseph, that no one ever
had recourse to your protection or asked for your aid without obtaining relief. Confiding, therefore, in
your goodness, I come before you and humbly implore you. Despise not my petitions, foster-father of the
Redeemer, but graciously receive them. Amen.

Holy Mary, full of the presence of God, during your life you accepted with great
humility the holy will of the father and the legacy of your Son our Lord Jesus Christ,
and evil never dared to entangle you with its confusion. Since then you have
interceded for all of our difficulties as you did at the wedding feast of Cana. With all
simplicity and with patience, you have given us an example of how to untangle the
knots in our complicated lives. By being our mother forever you arrange and make
clear the path that unites us to Our Lord.
Holy Mary, Mother of God and ours, with your maternal heart, untie the knots that
upset our lives. We ask you to receive into your hands Perpetrators and their
families and deliver us from the chains and confusion that restrain us. Blessed
Virgin Mary, through your grace, your intercession and by your example; deliver us from evil, and untie
the knots that keep us from being united to God. So that free of all confusion and error, we may find him
in all things, keep him in our hearts, and serve him always in our brothers and sisters. Amen.

would find; those who knock, would have the doors opened to them. Hear the prayers of Your church,

Novena Prayer
O most pure Virgin Mary conceived without sin, from the very first instant, you were
entirely immaculate. O glorious Mary full of grace, you are the mother of my God – the
Queen of Angels and of men. I humbly venerate you as the chosen mother of my
Savior, Jesus Christ.
The Prince of Peace and the Lord of Lords chose you for the singular grace and honor
of being His beloved mother. By the power of His Cross, He preserved you from all
sin. Therefore, by His power and love, I have hope and bold confidence in your
prayers for my holiness and salvation.
I pray first of all that you would make me worthy to call you my mother and your Son,
Jesus, my Lord. I pray that your prayers will bring me to imitate your holiness and
submission to Jesus and the Divine Will.
Hail Mary, full of Grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of
your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.
Now, Queen of Heaven, I beg you to beg my Savior to grant me these requests…
(Mention the novena intention here): For families who lost loved ones to find peace
My holy Mother, I know that you were obedient to the will of God. In making this petition, I know that
God’s will is more perfect than mine. So, grant that I may receive God’s grace with humility like you.
As my final request, I ask that you pray for me to increase in faith in our risen Lord; I ask that you pray for
me to increase in hope in our risen Lord; I ask that you pray for me to increase in love for the risen Jesus!
Hail Mary, full of Grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of
your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Novena to: Saint Monica, patron saint of modern challenges
Intention: For the return of fallen-away to Christ
+ In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Come to my aid, O God. O Lord, make haste to help me.

Prayer to St. Monica
Dear Saint Monica, you were once the mournful mother of a prodigal son. Your
faithfulness to prayer brought you and your son so close to God that you are
now with him in eternity. By your intercession and God’s grace, your son St.
Augustine became a great and venerable Saint of the Church. Please take my
request to God with the same fervor and persistence with which you prayed
for your own son.
Mention the novena intention here): For the return of fallen-away to Christ
With your needs, worries and anxieties, you threw yourself on the mercy and
providence of God. Through sorrow and pain, you constantly devoted yourself
to God. Pray for me that I might join you in such a deep faith in God’s goodness
and mercy. Above all, dear Saint Monica, pray for me that I may, like your son,
turn from my sin and become a great saint for the glory of God. Amen
