and will be available digitally worldwide on March 3rd,
2015. The video is a lush Latin dream that opens with
joyously teasing instrumentals (among them, co-leaders Christian Tumalan on piano and Steffen Kuehn on
trumpet), then slides into hypnotic lyrics from vocalists
Armando Cordoba and Alexa W. Morales (channeling a
retro crooner during some breakout swing), and is peppered throughout with sultry Latin dance moves. While
all this is going on, vibrant backdrops evoke the lush

colors of the tropics -- with a little Grammy-inspired
gold thrown in for good measure. The single and video
is an audio and visual fiesta for salsa dancers and lovers
alike.
2013 GRAMMY® Winner the Pacific Mambo Orchestra
(aka the PMO) is a 20 piece musical group leading the
rebirth of the Latin Big Band Sound. The PMO uses the
traditions of the classic mambo-craze orchestras of the
1950s to deliver their original music and clever, modern arrangements of hit songs. Currently the only fully
active Latin Big Band on the West Coast of the United
States, this elite group of the Bay Area’s finest musicians
performs in both English and Spanish, and even some
French and Portuguese selections.

PMO’s sizzling, self-titled debut record honors the
sounds of the great Latin Big Bands of the 1940’s
through 1960’s, including Machito, Tito Puente and
Tito Rodriguez, while infusing them with an intoxicating new energy. Richly textured arrangements flow
through the entire production, with exquisite playing
by ace musicians. With a repertoire of mostly original
scores, the selections move in a frenetic pace, pulsing
with the sounds, rhythms and beats that only a true Big
Band is capable of producing.
Their GRAMMY® award crowned the PMO’s first national tour of Performing Art Centers in the US. The tour
featured Tito Puente Jr. and was received with great acclaim by fans and critics alike. Their musical numbers
span many Latin genres such as Salsa, Mambo, Latin
Jazz, Cha Cha Cha, along with a fusion of sounds that
incorporate more modern genres (R&B, Hip Hop). The
show also pays tribute to the pioneers of the classic
Mambo Orchestras, all while paving the way to a bold

new sound designed to reach the next generation of
Big Band listeners.
Also a great honor to the PMO was to be voted BEST
BAND of the 2014 Best of the Bay in the San Francisco
Guardian Reader’s Poll. This Best of the Bay insert coincided with the last copy ever of the 48 year old newspaper and that issue has become a collector’s item.
The PMO is directed by Mexican-born pianist Christian
Tumalan and German-born trumpeter Steffen Kuehn,
each one a highly skilled and experienced artist in their
own right. The band’s instrumentation consists of four
Trumpets, four Trombones, five Saxophones, Piano,
Bass, Timbales, Congas, Bongos and two lead singers,
the lovely Ms. Alexa W. Morales and Armando Cordoba.
Powered by a sensational percussion section featuring Venezuelan Timbalero Omar Ledezma Jr., Mexican
Conguero Javier Cabanillas and Peruvian Bongo expert
Braulio Barrera, the band also showcases savvy im-
provisers forged in the region’s most celebrated Latin
bands.

Adrenalina Latina es la meta tangible de su Director Jesús Malpica, lo que comenzó como un deseo se
convirtió en un proyecto de vida; tener una orquesta del género salsa. La misma está integrada por
músicos profesionales porteños que llevan en sus
venas este sabor caribeño.
Esta idea de Jesús Malpica es propuesta a Eduard
Arcila y William López, y en julio de 2010 deciden
formar bajo el nombre de Orquesta Adrenalina Latina un formato musical con el fin de rescatar las
raíces de la salsa añeja (salsa clásica).
Bajo la dirección musical y arreglos de Jesús Malpica; en agosto 2010 La Orquesta Adrenalina Latina realiza su primera presentación en la Casa del
Tambor (San Millán), donde estando presente los
artistas Federico Betancourt, Dimas Pedroza y Carlín Rodríguez elogiaron la calidad de la propuesta
musical motivando a sus integrantes para seguir
trabajando en dicho proyecto.
A partir de allí, se presentan en infinidades de sitios emblemáticos entre ellos el Teatro Municipal de
Puerto Cabello; invitados por organizaciones salseras reconocidas, interpretando varios temas entre
ellos “Arrollando” dando inicio al sonido original

de la agrupación con la que los melómanos y salseros comienzan a identificarse.
En dos oportunidades el sonero del mundo Oscar
de León se presentó en la ciudad de Puerto Cabello
y Adrenalina Latina se hizo presente por la casa o
como dicen por ahí… fue la orquesta del patio, en los
eventos: “Una Noche por una Vida” y “Una Noche
con el más Grande” deleitando al público asistente
en estas majestuosas veladas.
Es importante mencionar, que en diferentes bailes
sociales Adrenalina Latina, realizó el soporte a artistas de la talla de: Cheo Valenzuela, Marcial Isturiz, Alexis Martínez, Wilmer Lozano, Wladimir
Lozano, Alejandro Mayora entre otros.
El 29 de Agosto de 2014 Adrenalina Latina bautizó su primera producción musical titulada “Pura
Adrenalina” en la ciudad de Puerto Cabello junto a
sus padrinos El Maestro Porfi Baloa y Angel Flores. Esta producción cuenta con 10 temas donde se

Québecois singer/songwriter Joanna Moon is joined by guitarist and music educator
Anton Apostolov and/or bassist Scott Kemp in this lively celebration of French music.
“French World Café” highlights the warmth of French musical culture as it has flourished around the world — exploring songs from France, Québec, Africa and Louisiana
while focusing on the needs of grade 9 to12 Immersions. Participants will learn how
to play Québec’s spoons, dance a traditional dance from France and sing along a few
songs.
This interactive performance provides students with the opportunity to expand their
knowledge of French culture and practice their comprehension skills while gaining a
better understanding of the phrase “joie de vivre.”

Amadou Kienou leads this high-energy
workshop focusing on the traditional
rhythmic patterns and dance of West
Africa.
By focusing on the culture of francophone
West African countries, this hands-on
programme enhances the students’ understanding and appreciation of diverse
French-speaking communities. Francophone musicians and dancers from
countries including Burkina Faso and
Guinea teach the students to play traditional rhythmic patterns and guide them
through expressive dance steps.
Drumming Jembe percussion has emanated from the Mande peoples of West Africa
in a global movement. In our participatory
workshops Students develop communication, cooperation and listening skills while
playing the earth-shaking rhythms of this
ancient tradition. ($29 per student, minimum group size 40 students.)

African dance strengthens the bonds of
family and community. While dancing
to live music students will memorize a
series of moves, learn how to respond to
the drummer’s signals, and express themselves creatively to new sounds. Menu

This interactive musical performance is
led by Café Con Pan, the energetic and entertaining son jarocho folk ensemble from
Veracruz. Students will learn zapateado
dance steps, sing in Spanish and play percussion.
This group performed together in Mexico
for ten years before moving to Canada in
2009. They explain the history and cultural significance of this community based,
music which has European, African and
Indigenous roots.

Led by Venezuelan Canadian dancer

Cuban dancer Dailyn Martinez and the
celebrated Cuban percussionist Papiosco Torres (leader of Iroko Project)
take students on a journey through
the Afro-Cuban rhythms with a focus on Guaguancó. The students will
dance to live percussion, while learning about different polyrhythm using small percussive instruments and
body percussion, will give students
an appreciation of the richness of the
authentic rumba tradition. (Great for

through classic Cuban Son repertoire,
exploring such enduring hits as Guantanamera, Son de la Loma, Amarosa

greater appreciation for Cuba’s rich
musical history.

This class, led by Toronto’s foremost
Latin American percussionists, introduces students to either Afro-Cuban or
Afro-Colombian rhythms. Participants
will play traditional instruments while
learning about culture and history. Our
featured teacher Luis Orbegoso (known
in the latin recording industry as “Luisito”) was born in Lima, Perú in 1971 and
moved to Canada in 1972. He became
an honoured graduate of the Humber
College music program in 1994 and has
been a member of the Toronto Musicians Association since 1993.

When I took up residence in La Habana in August
1981, I was already quite familiar with the Cuban jazz
group, Los Irakere. Having lived for many years as
both an undergraduate, as well as a graduate student
in the San Francisco Bay Area, during which time I visited Cuba on several occasions, I was a devoted fan
of many genres of the island’s music. After only a few
weeks in the Cuban capital, I went with some fellow
students and health professionals from the Instituto
de Desarollo de la Salud- affectionately referred to
as the IDS: The Institute for Health Development- to
what was to become my favorite of all of the capital
city’s cabarets- the one at the Hotel Riviera, located
along the famous Havana Malecon. It was there that I
first became entranced by Arturo Sandoval’s trumpet
virtuosity.
During my year in Havana, I saw this multi- faceted,
multi-Grammy award winning musician play on
countless occasions. I also got to know several other
members of Los Irakere- the group which evolved
out of the Orquesta Cubana de Musica Moderna- including one who is still my friend here in Miami, internationally acclaimed saxophonist, Carlos Averhoff.
As a foreigner, I was permitted, in contrast to the vast
majority of Cuban citizens at the time, to travel freely
in and out of the island. I often ran into Arturo aboard
flights from Havana to Miami. I remember well the
first time that we ever spoke. As we both exited the
Immigration booth at Miami International Airport,
Arturo muttered irritably: “Porque estos Americanos
siempre creen que todos nosotros, los cubanos, quieren quedarse en su pais?- Why do these Americans
always think that we Cubans all want to stay in their
country” Perhaps the now resident of Los Angeles and
former resident of Miami sincerely felt that way about
“la Yuma”- the United States at the time. However, in
1990, after his wife finally obtained permission from
Cuban authorities to join her husband while he was
on tour in Europe, the couple requested and swiftly
obtained refugee status in the United States.
Arturo was born in 1949 in Artemisa, a small town on
the outskirts of the Cuban capital. Like my own cousin, the great Jamaican-American jazz singer Carmen
McRae, he initially studied Classical music, taking
up the trumpet at age 12. Also like Carmen, he soon

became drawn, however, into the exciting world of
Jazz, adding the piano, flugelhorn and percussion instruments to his musical repertoire. Although he still
often plays internationally with Classical Symphony
orchestras, at his recent concert at the James Knight
Theater in Miami, he was firmly in both a Jazz and,
specifically a Cuban Jazz groove.
I had previously heard that Arturo rarely misses an
opportunity to publicly acknowledge his debt, as
well as his deep sense of gratitude to Dizzy Gillespie.
I knew also that, in 1977, he had forced his way, uninvited, on board a yacht docked off the Cuban coast,
on which Dizzy, along with Stan Getz, were special
guests, in 1977. These two giants of jazz were to become a perfect combo. African- American Dizzy was
a huge fan of Cuban music while Arturo was, and remains to this day, enamored of American jazz. He had
already spent four months in a Cuban jail for listening
to U.S. jazz radio stations- then a crime under Cuban
law- late at night, while serving his obligatory military
service.
While Arturo’s English remains rudimentary and Dizzie never spoke much Spanish at all, they communicated perfectly through the eloquent international
medium of Jazz. Following his initial meeting with
Arturo, Dizzy was relentless in his efforts to bring his
new friend and protégé, whom he recognized as having tremendous potential, to the United States. These
efforts culminated in 1990, when Dizzy escorted his
disciple into the U.S. Embassy in Greece. One of Arturo’s most recent albums is dedicated to his friend and
mentor, and is entitled: “Dear Diz, Every day I think of
you!” Shortly after gaining the cooperation of U.S.
Embassy officials in Athens, this dynamic and versatile musician was well on his way to being both a U.S.
citizen, as well as an international super star.

However, despite valiant efforts to provide first class
jazz six nights a week, and to the great disappointment of South Florida jazz devotees, the club closed
its doors after less than two years. Shortly afterwards,
Arturo and his family relocated to Los Angeles. During the Arturo Sandoval and Friends Concert at the
James Knight Theater, however, Arturo exhibited not
only his commitment to the past, but also his devotion to innovation and to the younger generation.

In 2006, Arturo made a concerted effort to capture the
energy of the many jazz devotees who are Miami residents by opening up a jazz club at the historic Deauville Hotel on Miami Beach. I enjoyed many wonderful nights there, listening to international jazz greats.

A native of Villa Clara in Central Cuba, where he
was born in 1963 Amaury became famous when he
left Cuba for Mexico, where he lived with his family
for many years before relocating to Miami. Like Arturo, he is intensely eclectic Grammy award winner,
spreading his brand of traditional Cuban trovadora
music around the world. Also like Arturo, he risked
imprisonment while doing his compulsory social
service in Cuba’s Sierra Maestra by listening in to
U.S. music programs. Not only did Amaury develop
a deep love for Jazz; he also discovered the hypnotic
Reggae sounds of the late Bob Marley. In fact, I often refer to him as the Cuban Bob Marley, although
Reggae is not currently part of his musical repertoire,
as he not only resembles the man who placed Jamaican music on the map, even more so because of his
trademark dreadlocks, but also because of his Soul
Rebel attitude and his militant commitment to Social
Change and Justice in his homeland. Arturo and Amaury treated their captive audience to a taste of their
Jazz “skat-ing” along with their renditions of several
traditional Cuban classics. Arturo also reminded us
that he is still skillful at popular Cuban dance steps, as
he and Amaury transported us musically across the
seas to their homeland.

Although only Arturo explicitly referred to the current political situation in the land of his birth, the fact
that this concert took place only a week following the
announcement of the “thawing” of relations between
the U.S. and Cuban governments- after a freeze of
over half a century- gave special meaning to the musical collaboration of four creators of Contemporary
Cuban music, all of whom committed to radical political and social change at home. Many consider the
youthful- in- appearance Chirino to be the creator of
the Miami Sound. He was actually born in 1947 in the
Cuban province of Pinar del Rio and often emphasizes his particular attachment to this western section
of the island, also the birthplace of Beny More. He became the winner of a Latin Grammy in 2007, and the
recipient of the prestigious Latin Grammy Lifetime
award. Chirino is also a member of Los Pedro Panthe Peter Pans- the approx. 14,000 Cuban children
who left home shortly following the Revolution and
were placed in foster homes in Florida by the Catholic
Church. At the time, many Cuban parents, including
Chirino’s, feared for their children’s fate under Castro’s
rule and opted to send their children away for what
they believed would be only a very short period of
time. Unfortunately, this particular night, Chirino did
not sing his poignant hit, in which he describes the
trauma of childhood exile, separation from family
and adaptation to a totally different culture: “Nuestro

The vivacious songstress, musician, composer, producer, political activist and talk show host, Albita,
whom Arturo introduced to the audience that night
as being: “the embodiment of Cuban music”, was the
last of Arturo’s invitees to take to the stage. My sole
complaint about January’s historic concert at the
Knight Theater was that the sometimes controversial,
but unfailingly energetic and passionate Albita did
not grace the stage for long enough. I first discovered
this fiercely patriotic Cuban musical gem when visiting Miami in 1993. This was a period during which
there were particularly large numbers of Cubans risking their lives to leave Cuba. Many headed towards the
shores of neighboring Jamaica, and several of them
introduced me to Albita’s riveting renditions of traditional Cuban folk music. I will never forget finally having the opportunity to see her perform, decked out
in immaculate male attire- thus shattering the usual
image of the sexily feminine Latina artist, at least on
that and on several other occasions. That night, only a
few months following her “defection” to La Yuma (colloquial Cuban term for the U.S.) at her concert at an
upscale Spanish restaurant in Coral Gables, she was
accompanied by a rocking all- female band. The fact
that Albita’s band were all mulata- mixed race or neg-

ra- black provoked more heated discussion am

as I constantly observed the wives, mistresses and

and economic elites being allowed to travel, while
the vast majority of Cuban citizens were not even
permitted to visit relatives abroad. Over the years, I

directly contributed to the death by drowning of Cubans of all ages and complexions, in the treacherous
waters which divide Cuba and Florida. I remember
defiantly playing Albita’s music at salsa parties that
I regularly hosted at my family home in Kingston,
Jamaica, at which both anti- and pro-Castro Cubans
often told me that they felt as if they had been transported back to their homeland. I even went so far as
to allow Albita’s defiant lyrics to blast at full volume
from my hotel room when I visited Santiago de Cuba,
during my frequent trips there in the mid-1990s. All

room door, furiously scribbling away.
I was, indeed, fortunate to have had the opportunity to enjoy the performances of four
of the major proponents of Cuban music- artists who may differ in their individual styles
and interpretations, but who are united in
their commitment to both keeping the music
of their homeland alive, along with bringing
the vitality and versatility of ever-evolving Cuban Contemporary music to the world. I only
wished that all four of them had been brought
back on stage together to conclude the event,
but that did not, in any serious way, detract
from this being an unforgettable night in Miami.

“…El Adiós Tour es una síntesis de más de mil conciertos que han involucrado a más de cuarenta músicos en
los últimos dieciséis años. Durante este tiempo el grupo se ha convertido en una personalizada, dinámica y
multi-generacional big band, donde los veteranos y los
más jóvenes se han unido para celebrar con elegancia la
tradición musical cubana.
Bajo la dirección musical de Jesús “Aguaje” Ramos (líder de la banda y trombonista), la formación de “Adiós
Tour” contará con varios músicos que participaron en
el disco y en la película Buena Vista Social Club® y que
incluyen a Eliades Ochoa (guitarra), también conocido
como el Johnny Cash cubano, Omara Portuondo (voz)
la diva del son, al maestro Guajiro Mirabal (trompeta)
y al virtuoso Barbarito Torres (laúd).
Acompañándoles en el escenario estarán algunos de los
músicos que a lo largo de los años se han unido al proyecto como el veterano maestro del tres Papi Oviedo, el
virtuoso pianista Rolando Luna, una excelente sección
rítmica compuesta por Pedro Pablo (contrabajo), Andrés Coyao (congas), Filiberto Sánchez (timbales) y Alberto “La Noche” (bongos), un conjunto de trompetas
de tres hombres liderado por la alta nota especialista de
Luis Alemany y el célebre sonero Carlos Calunga.

maestro. Finalmente, “Desde que me enamoré de ti”,

two amazing kinds of arts, writing and dancing. The main purpose of the competition is to explore the mind of a dancer, and giving a chance for all artists to express
their feelings towards their ultimate passion, dancing, through words. The “Mind of
a dancer” is a deep wide ocean that needs to be discovered by each and every individual on planet Earth.

many times per week do you actually dance alone or with a partner? What does dancing mean to
you!
The “Mind of a Dancer” Short Story Competition is
about writing a short story where the protagonist is a
dancer, and the purpose is to reveal how dancers from
different cultures, backgrounds, social classes and genders actually feel, think, and dream. It will be a chance
to share their passion and views in life, men, women,
fashion, politics, media… etc. The competition can include strippers too as a sort of art and dancing. The aim
behind the competition is to break the false stereotype
that dancers are just a facade, or a beautiful woman/
man dancing just “looking entertaining and beautiful”
or “sexy” or “lustful”, or that dancing is related to body
weight, flexibility…etc. We can inspire writers to create
new perceptions, and also allow dancers to reveal to the
world who they really are, since apparently not everyone understand the language of dancing!

La salsa no es propiamente un ritmo, sino una mezcla de ritmos fundamentalmente afroantillanos que se
fueron amalgamando: el mambo, el son, la guaracha, la bomba, la plena, el bolero, el jazz y la rumba, entre
otros.
La que sigue a continuación es una lista de los que considero los volúmenes más importantes de mi discoteca particular, en su parte dedicada a la salsa, una colección que he ido formando a lo largo de los años y
que hoy ya consta de alrededor de 250 CDs.
Como se sabe, la salsa no es propiamente un ritmo, sino una mezcla de ritmos fundamentalmente afroantillanos que se fueron amalgamando: el mambo, el son, la guaracha, la bomba, la plena, el bolero, el jazz
y la rumba, entre otros. Fue allá por los años sesenta cuando esta nueva modalidad musical apareció en
los barrios latinos de Nueva York, cuando aparecieron músicos jóvenes que se dedicaron a aprovechar un
espacio privilegiado para la creación e interpretación musical: la calle, el barrio, de donde deriva su sonido plenamente urbano. De allí salió hacia el mundo, como lo dejan ver las ventas de discos, las giras y el
surgimiento de intérpretes en el planeta.
Tras una durísima selección, aquí van mis diez discos predilectos de la salsa.

1. Siembra, Willie Colón y Rubén Blades,
Fania Records, 1978
La obra cimera del género, con un par de artistas
y músicos en el mejor momento del boom de la
salsa. Willie, proveniente del Bronx, niuyorrican, y el
panameño Rubén Blades, el principal compositor
de la salsa al lado del Tite Curet Alonso. Contiene el
más grande clásico salsero, “Pedro Navaja”, una gran
historia del cronista Blades, acompañado por una de
las mejores orquestas que Colón haya formado en
su carrera. Es de esos raros y excepcionales discos (y
aquí hablo de todos los tipos de música existentes)
que tiene sólo canciones grandes: “Plástico”, “Buscando guayaba”, “Dime”, “Siembra”, “María Lionza” y
“Ojos”. Indispensable para el melómano.
2. Live at the Cheetah, Fania All Stars,
Fania Records, 1971
Como dice César Miguel Rondón, este disco (más
bien, dos discos y una película) grabados en concierto en el salón neoyorquino Cheetah marca el
inicio del gran boom de la salsa. Es el gran disco de
las Estrellas de Fania, grupo integrado por los líderes
y los mejores músicos de diversas orquestas de esa
compañía disquera, encabezado por el legendario
dominicano Johnny Pacheco, y con un elenco insuperable: Ray Barreto, Larry Harlow, Bobby Valentín,
Willie Colón, Yomo Toro, Richie Ray, Roberto Roena,
Cheo Feliciano, Pete “El Conde” Rodríguez, Héctor
Lavoe, Ismael Miranda, Bobby Cruz, etcétera. Un
trabuco musical que pergeñó uno de los principales
discos del siglo XX, no me queda duda. A cuarenta
años de su grabación, imposible permanecer quieto
ante este conjunto de obras maestras: “Descarga
Fania All Stars”, “Quítate tú”, “Anacaona”, “Estrellas
de Fania”, “Ahora vengo yo, “Ponte duro” y “Macho
cimarrón”.

3. De ti depende (It’s up to you), Héctor Lavoe,
Fania Records, 1976
El mayor icono del género: el ponceño Héctor Juan
Pérez Martínez, universalmente conocido como
Héctor Lavoe, el chico malo de la salsa, El Cantante.
La voz de la orquesta de Willie Colón, con quien hizo
la mancuerna más explosiva de la música afroantillana de los años setenta. Éste fue su segundo disco
como solista, después de que Colón había disuelto
su agrupación y se habían separado. Sin embargo, El
Malo no dejó sólo a su viejo amigo de Ponce y produjo este disco, al que además hizo algunos arreglos.
Temas: “Hacha y machete”, acerca de la amistad que
unía a ambos, “Vamos a reír un poco”, el bolero “De
ti depende”, “Mentira” y “Tanto como ayer”. Pero hay
un tema más que sobresaliente, para mí el segundo
mejor de la salsa, un clásico contundente: la gran
canción del Tite Curet Alonso, “Periódico de ayer”.
Excepcionales la voz y el soneo de Lavoe, formidable
y fascinante el arreglo de Colón, quien sobre la base
de percusiones típica de la salsa llega a producir un
insuperable no diálogo sino triálogo (válganme la
expresión) entre trombones, trompetas y violines.
Obligatorio quitarse el sombrero y ponerse de pie.

Banda sonora de un documental que resume la gran
trayectoria de la música afroantillana en Estados
Unidos que efectivamente va desde el son del Trío
Matamoros y el Septeto de Ignacio Piñeiro, hasta
Isaac Delgado. Pero trae mucho más, como las percusiones y cantos cubanos del Grupo Yoruba Andabo, canciones de Arsenio Rodríguez (clásico entre los
clásicos), Chappotin y la Orquesta de Arcaño, y los
monstruos del jazz latino y del mambo: Pérez Prado,
Dizzy Gillespie y su orquesta con Chano Pozo (una
versión en vivo de “Manteca”, excelente), Machito y
sus Afrocubans, así como los Titos, Puente y Rodríguez. Además de otros prolegómenos (Benny Moré,
la Sonora Matancera), también hay una muy buena
selección de artistas ya propiamente salseros: Eddie
Palmieri, Harlow y su orquesta, Oscar D’León, Andy
Montañez, la Sonora Ponceña, el Gran Combo y Juan
Formell y los Van Van. Muy buen panorama general
del camino musical que llevó a la salsa.
5. ¡En vivo!, Oscar D’León, Universal, 2000
En concierto en el club Copacabana de Nueva York,
el salsero de Venezuela, el mayor (y probablemente
único) showman del género. En estudio uno de los
mayores soneros, en vivo logra aumentar notablemente el vigor de su orquesta y su capacidad para la
improvisación hacen que la adrenalina de la audiencia se multiplique. En este álbum doble reúne muchas de las canciones que lo hacen uno
de los mayores salseros: “Llorarás” (tal vez la salsa
más tocada en la historia), “Monta mi cabello”, “Calculadora”, “Detalles”, “Hechicera”, “Siéntate ahí” y “Melao de caña”, entre otras. Destacan sus versiones a
viejas canciones cubanas, las que renovó de manera
asombrosa (la última de las mencionadas es un claro
ejemplo) y las mantiene en el candelero.
6. Lo mejor de Joe Arrollo (sic), Joe Arroyo,
Discos Fuentes, 2003
Álvaro José Arroyo, el negro Joe, el más bravo y
representativo de los salseros colombianos, quien ha
agregado a la salsa otras tradiciones, como la cumbia y el porro. Para hacerlo le fue de gran enseñanza
militar como cantante en orquestas como Fruko
y sus Tesos y los Latin Brothers, las que le quedaron chicas muy pronto. Sus dotes como cantante y
compositor las explotó a cabalidad cuando formó
su propio grupo, La Verdad. Este disco es una buena
recopilación de sus grabaciones de aquel entonces:
“Luz Ángela”, “Mundo cruel”, “Yamulemau”, “Patrona
de los reclusos” y “Pa’l bailador” constituyen una pequeña muestra de la maestría de Arroyo. Y también
contiene su gran joya, una de las diez mejores rolas
salsosas de siempre: “Rebelión”. Pa’bravo, el Joe.

7. Una década, Rubén Blades, Sony, 2003
Desde Panamá, el cronista de la salsa y el músico
salsero que más ha experimentado y evolucionado
musicalmente sin perder nunca su sabor. Éste es un
disco recopilatorio que abarca una tercera etapa de
su carrera, tras Fania y sus primeros años en Sony:
sus grabaciones de la década de los noventa, en los
que publicó excelentes discos como Amor y control
y La rosa de los vientos. Un puñado de espléndidas
canciones cuyos temas van del amor filial en “Amor y
control” hasta la denuncia social y política en “Camaleón”, “Prohibido olvidar”, “Adán García”, y el amor sin
más en “Creo en ti” y “Sin querer queriendo”. Todas
las canciones en diferentes estilos de salsa que demuestran una riqueza musical notable, cada una
con gran calidad en la composición, arreglos e interpretación. Sin pierde.
8. Thirty Years Vol. 1, Sonora Ponceña,
Música Latina Internacional, 1985
La Gran Señora de Ponce ha rodado por el mundo
durante 56 años, mantenida siempre con grandes
estándares de calidad por Enrique Lucca y su hijo
Papo, un pianista fenomenal. Es la orquesta más fina
del circuito salsero, tan cercana a la tradición cubana
de compositores como Arsenio Rodríguez como a
la del jazz. Banda que no usa trombones, tiene en
Papo Lucca al pianista más dominante de la salsa:
en ninguna otra agrupación encuentro que el piano
desempeñe un papel tan preponderante y exquisito.
En este disco recopilatorio hay una leve pero representativa selección del dilatado periplo rumbero del
Gigante del Sur: “Fuego en el 23”, “Yambeque”, “Date
cuenta”, “Borinquen”, “Ramona” y “Hasta que se rompa el cuero”, entre otras. De rechupete.

9. Grandes éxitos SAR, Varios artistas,
Max Music, 1997
Durante los años setenta y ochenta el trono indiscutible de las compañías discográficas salseras pertenecía a Fania, aunque hubo otros sellos con artistas
de gran valía que a veces han caído en el olvido. Uno
de ellos fue SAR, en el que se agruparon músicos
que provenían de un mayor apego a la tradición
cubana. Ésta es una recopilación de diez temas en
las que podemos apreciar a varios de sus artistas:
Roberto Torres (“Caballo viejo” y “El tractor amarillo”),
la India de Oriente (“El fiel enamorado” y “Canción
de la serranía”), Henry Fiol (“Ahora me da pena”) y
el violinista Alfredo de la Fe (“Somos los reyes del
mundo”), entre otros. Una excelente, aunque breve
recopilación.
10. Masterpiece / Obra maestra, Tito Puente
y Eddie Palmieri, Universal, 2000
Reunión de un par de viejos maestros de la rumba y
el jazz, que en este disco dan una completa lección
de lo que es la salsa, entre coqueteos con el tango
argentino y la música de mariachi mexicana. En el
disco participan muy buenos cantantes, como Oscar
D’León, Pete El Conde Rodríguez y Michael Stuart,
además de un excelente grupo de músicos. Tal vez
la última obra de Puente, en ésta se demuestra que
el Rey del Timbal se pudo adaptar muy bien a los
cambios de la música afroantillana hasta hacer esta
obra con uno de los pianistas más importantes de la
salsa y del jazz latino.

Start in the closed dance position. The lead takes his partner’s
right hand in his left and places his right hand on her left
shoulder blade. The partner should keep her left hand on his
right shoulder, with her arm over his.
Or start in the hand-in-hand position. The lead has his
palms facing upwards, and the partner takes his hands with
her palms down. This allows for more freedom of movement.
Have good posture. When dancing, you should always keep your spine straight, your
chin up and your shoulders back. Your chest should naturally then puff out a bit.
Your body should be held with strength at all points.[1]
Always look up. Keep your head held up or tilted to look at your partner. Do
not look at your feet or your partner’s. Looking at your feet is a dead giveaway
that you’re nervous and not sure what you’re doing.
Keep your arms bent at a 90 degree angle from the elbows.[2] In this position,
your hands are most easily accessible to your partner. Your arm should rest on
horizontal plane.
Move your hips. Most of the movement in the Salsa comes from the
hips, so you will want to keep your hips loose. Don’t be afraid to sway
your hips. Even if you’re just moving your foot, know that a slight hip
movement goes along with it. If you move your right foot out, your
right hip juts out a bit, too.
Choose a song that has a 4/4 beat (four beats to the bar) and a fast tempo[2]. You’ll want music that lies somewhere between 160-220 beats
per minute.[3] Before you start a song, make sure that you can
keep up with the speed and identify the beats for your steps.
Count as you listen to the song. If you count out the beats in the
music, you will be able to find the Salsa beat and identify which
steps go with which beat. If you can’t keep count while you’re
listening to the song, it’s best to choose a different one.
4/4 time is counted in 8-counts. You’ll be doing one standard Salsa
step in 8 beats.
