Prep Courses
The U.S. Department of Labor forecasts that information security analysts
will be among the fastest-growing occupations through 2022. CompTIA’s
Security+ certificate is widely regarded as the entry-level certificate for this
fast-growing field.
CompTIA® Security+ Certification Prep 1 (Cost: $99)
This course covers the key terminology and concepts you need to know to ace the exam, all in a condensed format for
rapid reading. The course provides helpful study tools including crossword puzzles, games, and practice questions to
aid with learning. All of the content is geared toward helping you pass the SY0-401 exam.

This course will teach you everything you need to know to take and pass the challenging CompTIA Network+
certification exam and become an excellent network technician. You’ll learn about topologies, the OSI Seven-Layer
model, protocol suites, modern network operating systems, network hardware, cabling standards, remote connectivity,
Internet connections, network troubleshooting, and more. This course will prepare you for the 2009 exam objectives

learners will learn how to give a garden a healthy start and keep it growing strong all
season. The first step to a great harvest is selecting the right crops. Learners will explore
climate considerations, learn how to read a zone hardiness map, and find out how to spot a
micro-climate in your yard. Discover how to properly prepare a garden bed. Learn how to

Motorcycle Safety & Training
Basic Rider Course: BRC is a three-day class held Friday - Sunday. Weekday classes are held Tuesday - Thursday and
are available during the summer. This course includes classroom and on-motorcycle instruction. Riders will learn basic
skills of motorcycle operation and safe riding strategies under controlled range condition. The BRC program provides
motorcycles (none larger than 500 cc), helmets and textbook for each rider. Successful completion of the course
prepares the rider for state licensing with an exemption in the skills and knowledge test at the DMV.
Extended Basic Rider: Designed for students who have completed the Basic Rider Course (successful or not) and
would like more individualized instruction. The class ratio of student to instructor is 3:1.This course is scheduled on a
demand basis and will be held on two weekday evenings starting in May and will be available until August.
Class fee is $ 100.00 per person.
Basic Rider 2: BRC2 includes a brief review of basic skills, critical advanced turning, braking skills, counter steering,
and obstacle avoidance. This class is designed to assist riders in improving their skills and is taught on Saturdays or
Sundays from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Students will need street-legal motorcycle, helmet, valid driver’s license with
motorcycle endorsement, and proof of insurance on the motorcycle. Class fee is $60 per person.
Advanced Rider: ARC consists of approximately 3 ½ hours of classroom activities and 4 ½ hours of riding. This class
is taught on Saturdays or Sundays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Students will need street-legal motorcycle, helmet, valid
driver’s license with motorcycle endorsement, and proof of insurance on the motorcycle. There is no formal skills test
but a course assessment will be administered. Class fee is $ 70 per person.
Sidecar/Trike Course: Sidecar/Trike Education Program (S/TEP) is designed to teach riders the skills necessary
to safely operate a three-wheel vehicle on the street, even if one has never ridden any kind of motorcycle. The 16hour course takes the rider through the basics of motorcycle operation (controls are much the same as a two-wheel
motorcycle), effective braking, turning skills and obstacle avoidance, as well as other safe riding strategies. Sidecar units
and Trikes are available for use on Saturday and Sunday but riders are encouraged to bring their own Sidecar/Trike for

Security Officer Core Subjects (01E) 18 Hours
This course prepares students to work as unarmed security officer. Class topics include:
Applicable sections of the Code of Virginia and Regulations relating to private security
services, code of ethics, and general duties and responsibilities. Students will learn
about the criminal and administrative laws of Virginia, documentation and reports, and
handling emergency procedures.
Students wishing to become an armed security officer will also need to complete classes
05E (Arrest Authority), 075E (Handgun). If applicable, 08E (Shotgun) may also be needed.

Armed Security Officer Arrest Authority (05E) 8 Hours
This course covers the Virginia laws pertaining to the powers of arrest. Participants will
learn how to effect a legal arrest and how to avoid civil and criminal liability. The DCJS
policies and the sanctions for violating those policies will be reviewed. Participants will
by shown the proper procedures for making an arrest to include the use of handcuffs,
pepper spray and foam and the expandable baton. Students wishing to become an armed
security officer will also need to complete classes 01E (Security Officer Core Subjects),
075E (Handgun), and if applicable, 08E (Shotgun Entry—Level).

Concealed Weapon Permit Training Course
This 6-Hour course provides the classroom and range instruction necessary to meet certification requirements for a Concealed
Weapons Permit. Virginia Resident Concealed Handgun Permits are issued by the circuit court of the county or city in which
the applicant resides. You must be at least 21 years of age. Please contact the applicable court for specific instruction on the
application process. The course covers the basics of safe gun handling and shooting. Participants will learn about firearm safety,
parts and operation, shooting fundamentals, care and cleaning, storage options, selection, and more.
NO AMMUNITION AND NO LOADED WEAPONS ARE ALLOWED IN THE CLASSROOM.
Classroom materials: Provided by CVCC.
Range materials: Students will be required to provide their own firearm, ammunition, hearing and eye protection and 2-3
targets at the range. Range fees are not included in course cost.

Trades: Contractor & Tradesmen Licensure Updates
Tradesman Update Classes
The Virginia Board of Contractors requires journeymen, master plumbers, electricians, HVAC mechanics, and gas fitters to take
continuing education hours specific to their trade as part of the licensing process.
Those renewing a license must take continuing education in their respective profession.
Plumbers, HVAC technicians and electricians must take three hours of continuing education in their field.
Gas Fitters must take on hour; this one-hour training course for gas fitters is intended for journeyman and master gas
fitters, liquefied petroleum gas fitters and natural gas fitters.
This course covers new definitions, code changes, general requirements, impact on the job, general use and special
equipment included in the respective codes.

Backflow Classes – Coming in November 2016

16 HR Backflow Prevention Device Certification Prep Class: $299
Course provides 16 hours of classroom and wet lab instruction designed to meet Department of Professional &
Occupational Regulation (DPOR) training requirements for workers with at least 7 years of experience in plumbing
and related mechanical areas.
40 HR Backflow Prevention Device Certification Prep Class: $699
BPDC includes 40 hours of classroom and wet lab instruction designed to meet training requirements for workers
with 4-6 years of experience in plumbing and related mechanical areas. (Note: The 4HR Installation Class as noted
below is included in the 40 HR class.) Objective areas: Introduction to cross-connections; conditions leading to
backflow; prevention of cross-connection; cross-connection program components; installation of backflow devices
inside buildings; outside buildings; and in flood areas; codes and ordinances; and use of test kits and wet lab.
4 HR Installation Class: $99
In accordance with 18 VAC 50-22-20 and 18 VAC 50-22-30, the Department of Professional and Occupational
Regulation (DPOR) requires irrigation contractors (ISC), heavy highway (H/H) contractors and fire sprinkler
contractors (SPC) to attend a class approved by the Board on backflow prevention assemblies (BPA’s) installation
before they are allowed to install BPA’s. A state backflow prevention device worker certification does not allow
contractors in these specialties to install BPA’s. Once the certification has been obtained, successful attendees will
be authorized to install BPA’s, but only in their specific contractor designation. (IE: ISC install BPA’s in irrigation
systems and H/H in heavy highway applications; etc.).
Course provides 4 hours of instruction covering theory of backflow and math calculations; thermal expansion &
venturi effect; types of devices/assemblies & applications; 2012 Virginia plumbing code; special considerations;
installation of backflow preventers; freeze protection; lawn irrigation systems; and discussion questions.
This class is VA DPOR approved for all contractors who install, maintain, extend or alter water supply, liquid waste,
sewage, and storm water systems. The instructor for this course is VA DPOR approved to provide individual training
for Backflow Prevention Device installation incidental to Highway/Heavy, Landscape Irrigation and Fire Sprinkler
contracting jobs.

Cancellation Policies
CVCC reserves the right to cancel any classes which do not have sufficient registration or for other reasons that arise in
the course of business. Any classes offered by CVCC, whether on campus or off site, will be canceled due to inclement
weather when CVCC is closed. Listen to local radio and TV stations, or check the College’s website at www.cvcc.vccs.
edu for current information.
Refunds
Students are encouraged to register for all classes at least seven (7) days before the first scheduled class date. Late
registrations may be possible depending on factors such as space availability, purchasing, etc. If a registrant’s plans
change, Workforce Solutions & Community Education must be notified at 434-832-7607 at least three (3) business days
before the first scheduled class date. The registrant then will have the option to transfer to another upcoming class
within the same semester or receive a refund. Should a registrant fail to contact the Workforce office at least three (3)
business days before the first scheduled class date, the full cost of the class, including any books, materials or other
items that were part of the cost of the class, will be forfeited. Specific programs may have alternate refund policies.
