Submitted by Kate Schultz
I received this wonderful letter from a dear friend
of mine. She wanted to share her views and thoughts
about her “new home.”
I would like to extend an invitation to anyone who
would be interested in going down to the Lakewood
Assisted Living. I would like to coordinate a trip down
there to tour the facility if anyone would like to see it.
Please call me and let me know and I will do my
best to coordinate a trip down to tour and have lunch
there. I think it would be fun and educational at the same
time. You can decide for yourself if the assisted living style
is your style at some point in your life.
Call me, Kate Schultz, @ 715-478-2173 to sign up
for a tour. Hope to hear from you soon.
Thanks, Jerry, for sharing your letter with us and
we hope to see you soon to visit your “new home.” We all
know there’s no place like home and yours sounds
lovely!!

The staff at Lakewood Assisted living are caring
people who provide us with quality care 24 hours a day, 7
days a week, with 3 meals a day, housekeeping, bathing,
toileting, nail and hair care, laundry, medication
assistance, exercise programs and many other fun
activities. There is an on-call nurse 24 hours a day who can
be reached in case of emergency.
The rooms are equipped with individual heating
and cooling units. Each room has its own bathroom with
shower included. Each room has a window with a view of
the great outdoors, many have bird feeders outside the
window so they can watch the birds. Visitors are allowed
and welcomed any time, day or night.
You don’t have to travel far, or even at all for
appointments or church. We have two great clinics in the
area, with great doctors and dentists. Our pharmacy
delivers medications so we never have to worry about
getting them in time. The churches are close and many of
the pastors and priest will come right to the building if
asked. Myself and another resident have our cars here,
the staff is always helpful in making sure we safely make it
in and out of our cars. We have a Physical Therapist who
will come right to the building for residents who need or
want therapy. I personally would like to see all rumors
about my home stopped. They are not true. I hope you can
come take a tour and see how wonderful this place is for
yourself. Hope to see you soon.

Gossip and Rumor
By Jerry Prasser
I was the first one to move into Lakewood
Assisted Living. It had been a Best Western Motel. Right
from the beginning, there was “backbiting” “Slander”
“false rumors” gossip being spread that did a lot of
damage. The first rumor, people heard this place was full.
Endeavors were made to correct the false rumors. Ads
were placed in every paper to welcome people for tours,
and to have lunch. I have been living here over a year and
would like to counteract the second biggest rumor, that it
is too expensive. For the price I pay, the care is
exceptional. The most recent rumor is that we are closing.
This is very untrue - we do have new management.
However, the doors will remain open as long as there is
even one person living here.

Brown St. Books to
close their doors
With a heavy heart I will be closing Brown Street
Books in downtown Rhinelander. After months of
contemplation on whether to stay open or close, to sell or
not, we will begin our closing sales Monday July, 11th, with
plans to be closed some time in August.
Times are changing due to technology but also
the economy and Main Streets such as Rhinelander
having a difficult time competing with the big stores. 18
years ago Brown Street Books opened its doors, the same
time as Amazon. We were holding our own until on-line
sales cut into our sales with their aggressive discounts
and now their e-reader.
Foot traffic in my store has decreased steadily
over the last year which has affected sales. “Paper” books
are selling on line oft times cheaper than my cost, and
Kindle, Nook, and E Readers are nibbling away at
independent book stores such as mine with E-Books,
making it financially difficult to keep my bookstore solvent.
And I understand that people need to watch how they
spend their money. We are so fortunate to have a
wonderful library downtown.
I have been blessed with wonderful booksellers,
many faithful customers, and landlords who are great to
work with. Owning my own store has been an extremely
rewarding experience which I will always treasure. The
decision to close is so sad for me because I love my book
store and all the memories such as our Harry Potter
midnight parties and when author Jan Brett came to
Rhinelander.
In the past month when customers came in
saying, “We're so glad you are still here”, I thought “will I
be able to still be here? How? Wrestling since January on
how I could still remain open, May and June sales told me I
needed to close.
To customers who were searching for obscure
books which often times we were able to locate for themfor all the special orders we were able to get for customers
- and for those who had no computer or did not feel

comfortable ordering on line - we will no longer be able to
fill their needs and that is so heartbreaking for me.
The number of area book clubs have grown from
ones like Over readers Anonymous (possibly the area's
longest running book club), to over 35 book clubs. They
registered their monthly selections with us which was so
wonderful seeing all the book lovers connecting with
others, the choices of books they discussed, to be able to
suggest possible choices for their club's next read but also
to have their book selection in our store for them.
To now face my faithful customers will be
extremely difficult as I feel I am letting them down for they
are losing a local, independent business with an owner
and friendly, knowledgeable staff who have worked so
hard these past years striving to give customers the best
service possible.
You may keep up to date on my Going Out of
Business Sale on Brown Street Books Face Book page or
call 715-362-5111.
We have been the best little store we knew how to
be. But now, borrowing the title of Joshua Ferris' 2007
novel, “Then We Came to the End”, we will no longer be a
part of independently owned stores in downtown
Rhinelander.

K A T H E R I N E C .
JACOBSON, 95, passed
from this life on June 27,
2011 at Rapid City Regional
Hospital.
She was born on
March 12, 1916 in Buhl, MN
to Croatian immigrants
Katherine and Martin
Lulich. She spent her early
childhood in Saxon, WI. At
the early age of 12, her
family moved to Laona, WI.
She attended high school
in Laona and was the
valedictorian of the Class of
1933.
After high school she attended Business College
in Milwaukee and in 1935 she married Marvin Guth, a
cheese maker from Saxon. They settled in Phillips, WI
where they raised a family of four children and operated a
cheese factory. In 1945, they decided to build a supper
club in Phillips; it was called the Skyline and was known
throughout the area for its great food and the wonderful
music Katherine provided each evening on the Hammond
Organ for the continuous flow of customers. After six years
of operating the supper club, they decided to sell and get
back in the dairy business which was less demanding.
Another move, this time to Argonne; where they
purchased the Argonne Dairy, which she and her husband
operated until his death in 1957. Two years later, Katherine
grew restless and purchased a Children’s Clothing Store
in Rhinelander called Tot to Teen followed by the purchase
of another store with Ladies fashions called Smartwear.
In 1964 she met and later married Clarence
Jacobson of Rapid City, SD. They resided in Rapid City
and once more Katherine was compelled to enter the
business world. She opened a Ladies dress shop called
Katherine’s and operated that business for five years at
which time she decided to do some traveling.
After retirement and considerable travel
experience, she and Clarence enjoyed keeping their home
and lawn looking perfect and having the kids and
grandkids visit.
Katherine was a strong determined woman.
Feisty and tenacious, she had an appetite for adventure
and an ambitiousness that wasn’t thwarted by a little dirt or
hard work. She loved the Lord, her Church, and her family;
and was protective of all of these.
Survivors include two daughters, Marlene (Leo)
Pelek of Largo, FL; Jacquelyn King, San Pedro, CA; two
sons, Karl (Colette) Guth, Hiles, WI; Martin (Jean) Guth,
Las Cruces, NM; eleven grandchildren; twelve great
grandchildren; one brother, Donald (Mary) Tadich,
Bloomington, MN; two nieces and a nephew.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her
husbands, a granddaughter, son-in-law, a niece, and just
recently her only sister Rose, on June 17, 2011.
Mass of Christian Burial was offered at 11:00 a.m.
on Thursday, June 30, 2011 at Blessed Sacrament Church
with Rev. Janusz Korban presiding.
Interment will take place at a later date at St.
Peter’s Cemetery in Eagle River, WI.

Retiring teacher, Mr. Earl Blankenheim, leaves
behind an additional legacy in the school forest. Along
with departing senior Kodie Erickson, Blankenheim

which was installed with the help of Wabeno High School

Sheriff’s Department
Investigates Burglary
On 6/23/11, the Forest County Sheriff’s Dept.
Responded to a burglary in progress at a residence near
Roberts Lake in the Town of Freedom. Attentive neighbors
contacted the Sheriff’s Office after they observed three
subjects who were in the process of burglarizing a
residence and taking a motorcycle and an ATV. The
suspects fled the scene and a manhunt ensued. The
Sheriff along with Forest Co. Deputies, the City of Crandon
Police, the Town of Laona Police, the Town of Wabeno
Police & K-9, and a DNR Warden responded and took one
suspect into custody after a short time.
Further investigation let to search warrants being
executed in Oconto County where two more suspects
were arrested. The search warrants produced several
stolen items including numerous guns, electronic
equipment, a stolen car, a second stolen ATV and a
marijuana grow operation. Sheriff Dennee credited the
neighbors who were attentive enough to take down the
license plate of the vehicle involved and gave the officers
the description of the suspects. Sheriff Dennee also
credited the teamwork between the several law
enforcement agencies involved and the District Attorneys
Office for the hard work and determination put forth on an
investigation that continued to grow over several days.
The investigation is on-going as new information
is being received about other crimes.

DNR shooting sports coordinator sets goal of 2,000 new participants
for 2011
Here's a thought for Wisconsin hunters: Picture your
kids' teachers, your hair stylist, grocery store clerk, doctor, or
neighbor kid enjoying their first hunt. You can make it a reality and
help preserve a Wisconsin tradition, and the Department of
Natural Resources will help.
It’s an exciting time to be in sports, rod and gun and
conservation clubs. Club members have a focused sense of
purpose and challenge -- find the next generation of hunters.
Think about recruiting participants from your community. Reach
beyond the local hunter education class to other adult friends and
their children.
Hunting offers an opportunity to meet new people,
exercise, connect with nature, spend quality time with family and
friends, and have the opportunity to bring home high quality food.
Let's share it and see if we can introduce hunting to at least 2,000
new people this year. I know a lot of hunters who want to help, and
I think we can do it.
The reality facing hunting in Wisconsin and other states
is the majority of participants are Baby Boomer generation,
marching through middle age into their 60s with reduced
participation in the more recent generations. The gradual loss of
the hunting population threatens to reduce the relevance of
hunting to our strong conservation community.
In the challenge there is also opportunity -- all those
baby boomers also represent an army of qualified mentors for the
next decade. Wisconsin citizens recognize the importance of
hunters to conservation in our state and they strongly support us.
It’s up to us as hunters – as well as business organizations, youth
groups, churches and neighborhood organizations -- to make
sure that great tradition continues.
A good way to introduce people to hunting is a Learn to
Hunt event. Nearly 1,000 joined a Learn to Hunt turkey event this
past spring. If your group hosted an event, make sure you send in
the final roster to the DNR at Learn to Hunt Coordinator LE/8, PO
Box 7921, Madison, WI, 53707.
The processes and application forms sponsors need to
organize a Learn to Hunt event are available on the DNR website.
Sponsors should work closely with the local wildlife biologist or
warden when planning an event, and ensure at least one of the
event instructors is a certified Hunter Education Instructor.
Remember, this opportunity is open to novice hunters of all ages.
Consider planning an event for parents who don’t hunt and
include their children.
Mentors are screened by the DNR using background
checks at least two weeks before the hunt. There is also a
reimbursement program through which groups can receive $25
per novice hunter to help cover the costs of hosting a learn-tohunt event. If you are interested in hosting an event or have any
questions about LTH, see the DNR website: or contact Warnke at
the number below.
The DNR initiated the Learn to Hunt program in 1998 to provide
novice hunters of all ages opportunities to experience a hunt with

Nicolet College’s new
green building design degree
Anyone interested in learning green building
design and construction techniques is invited to attend a
Nicolet College information session on the college’s
Architectural Technology associate degree Tuesday, July
12, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Tamarack Center Room 117.
The new two-year associate degree includes
classes that cover sustainable home building practices
such as Building Green Residential, Alternative Energy
Overview, and Principles of Sustainability, as well as
traditional residential design and construction.
“Green construction is a clear trend in the
industry,” said Jeff Labs, Architectural Technology and
Building Trades instructor at Nicolet. “Students who
graduate from the program will have multiple skills with a
new technology. This will give them a definite advantage in
landing that first job after college and advancing in the
field as they get more experience.”
The information session, which is free and open
to the public, will cover the classes necessary to earn the
degree, job prospects after graduation, as well as
information on college’s admissions process, financial
aid, scholarships and academic advising.
Classes will begin at the start of Fall Semester
Aug. 23.
Nicolet created the new degree after consulting
with more than 30 area professionals from constructionrelated businesses. Repeatedly these individuals said
there was solid demand for graduates with design and
construction skills that focus on environmental
sustainability.
“Increasingly people who are building new
homes want to incorporate energy-saving and other
environmentally-sustainable features in their homes,”
Labs added “Graduates from the Architectural
Technology program will provide local construction
contractors with a greater ability to provide these services
which, in turn, will help these businesses be successful.”
Information will also be available about the
college’s admissions process, financial aid, scholarships
and academic advising.
For more details, contact the Nicolet College
Welcome Center at (715) 365-4493, 1-800-544-3039, ext.

Lake Lucerne
3rd Annual “Meet Your Neighbor” Night
The Lake Lucerne Advancement Association will
be sponsoring “Meet Your Neighbor Night” on Saturday,
July 16th at the association bldg. located on Hwy W. The
festivities begin at 5:00pm and continue till 10:30 pm rain
or shine.
This event is sponsored by the association for
families, friends of lake owners and members to gather
together to relax, enjoy, converse and dance at the
building. It is also a great way to introduce new land
owners to neighbors and new friends around the lake.
Attendees enjoy delicious food and beverages
provided by the association while listening to DJ music.
Families bring a side dish or dessert to pass to add to the
feast. Last year over 100 people participated at the 2nd
“Meet your Neighbor Night”.
This year the association is sponsoring a food
drive for N.E.W.C.A.P (the local food pantry) and
donations for the Forest County Humane Society. Each
family attending is asked to bring something to help with
the drive. Cash donations are also accepted.

Learn about the Peshtigo Fire at the
Holt & Balcom Logging Camp
On October 8, 1871, a huge conflagration called the Peshtigo Fire caused the most
deaths by fire in United States history, killing as many as 2,500 people. Ever wonder what
started the Peshtigo Fire? Did you know it was much worse than the much more famous
Chicago Fire?
Don’t miss the opportunity to find out more about this calamity and so much more
at a very special event to be held on July 23 at 1:00 p.m. Sponsored by the Holt & Balcom
Logging Camp Museum in Lakewood, Forest Fires: Then and Now will be presented by
Gary Zimmer, retired FS Firefighting Team Leader.
Everyone is encouraged to come out to this event. Due to the fact that the Museum
is closed this summer for renovation, the educational program will be held in the adjacent
McCauslin Country Club Golf Course/Clubhouse dining room, just a mile and a half East of
Lakewood on County F. Call 715-276-6515 for more details.

Annual Flea-Zaar at the Lakewood Presbyterian Church
on July 15th and 16th. We will have lots of household items
and furniture for sale. A craft sale and popcorn sale have
been added to the agenda this year. As usual, on Friday,
we will be selling Chicago Style Hot Dogs. Saturday's
events include hamburgers, brats and strawberry
shortcake for lunch and a bake sale. There will be a silent
auction of gift certificates from area businesses on both
days.
We will be accepting donations on Thursday, July
14th from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. To make arrangements
for pick-up of large items, please call 715-473-3603.
Remember, no clothing, mattresses, pianos, electronics
or large appliances requiring a disposal fee. All proceeds
will be used to further the missions of Forest Larger Parish.
The sale will run from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. on
Friday the 15th and from 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. on
Saturday the 16th. There will be no pre-sales, so make
sure you arrive early!

Kim Simac
Cont. from pg. 1
As a small business owner, Kim understands the
constraints that taxes and regulations have on jobs and
economic growth. She will fight to bring jobs and
prosperity back to the Northwoods. Kim knows it's hard
enough to run a business in this economy without having
to report every single cow, chicken and horse that you own
to the government. That is why Kim is running to restore
common sense business practice to the State Senate and
fight for lower taxes and smaller government; so people
can be allowed to live their lives, run their business and
work their land as they know best.
Kim also knows how this climate of high taxes and
regulations adversely affects jobs in Wisconsin. The 3,000
jobs lost in the 12th Senate district since 2008 isn't just a
statistic, it's a stark reality. Two of those jobs lost are her
children, who have been forced to move out of the state
because of the job climate in Wisconsin. Kim will fight to
foster a climate that will bring about positive job growth in
Wisconsin and attract jobs and prosperity to the
Northwoods.

Crandon 4th of July
Celebration
Alyssa Ingram, 4th of July Queen with
last year’s King Michael Childers
By Boyd Monte
There was fun had by all at this years 4th of July
celebration in Crandon. The weather was beautiful, music
was fantastic and there was plenty of food and drink for
everyone. The two day celebration started Friday night on
the corner of Lake Street and Madison with a DJ and
plenty of room to dance. Saturday at noon, the parade
marched down Lake Ave. The streets were packed with
people of all ages and the floats were loaded with candy to
pass out to the children. Alyssa Ingram was this years 4th
of July Queen and got to ride atop the fire truck in the
beginning of the parade. She was accompanied by
Michael Childers, last years King. Winners of the Floats
were; Mihalko hauling storm damage, Clare Russell, Kirk
Schallock, Vets of Foreign Wars and the Chamber Choice
was Hotel Crandon. The Crandon Fire Department held
their auction to a full house, there was cash and Brewer
tickets raffled off.
The fireworks started at 10 p.m. This year, the
fireworks were relocated to the hill west of City Hall so that
there residue from the display would not damage any
houses or yards. It was a great show that lit up the night
skies. After the fireworks show, the celebration went back
down to Madison Street where the band played for the
crowd until midnight.
The weekend was a big success and a great time
to be with family and friends.
