Hair By Sue has new location
By Boyd Monte
Cassidy’s Café is now open in Wabeno. The café
is located in the former Hook In The Foot Café at 4453
North Branch Street.
The new owner, Shawn Cassidy, started his
cooking career at Nantucket Shores in Milwaukee. Shawn
was there for 13 years before moving on to the Hilton Anchorage Restaurant for 5 years. Shawn and his family
moved north and was employed at the Carter Casino for
the next 20 years. That is an impressive 38 years
experience in the restaurant business.
Shawn has always wanted to own his own
restaurant and now his dream is a reality. Shawn, his wife
Christina, and four children and their partners, all work at
Cassidy’s Café.
There are daily specials offered and the food is
almost completely homemade including soups, desserts
and meals. Desserts are served in mason jars and people
love the Rum Chatta French Toast. Cassidy’s Café also
offers a Friday night fish fry and Saturday night steak
special.
Breakfast is served till 11:00 a.m. during the week
and 12:00 on the weekends. Their hours are Sunday 7:00
a.m. -1:00 p.m., Monday 6:00 a.m -7:00 p.m., Tuesday and
Wednesday 6:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., Thursday 6:00a.m.7:00p.m. and Friday and Saturday 6:00 a.m - 8:00 p.m.

Wisconsin Trail Passes required
so join a snowmobile club!
The first Fall Run of the Lumberjack Steam Train,
in Laona, Wisconsin, was enjoyed by hundreds of train
fans, history lovers, and others who just like seeing the
Northwoods in autumn color, and enjoy the museum, a
working blacksmith shop, Green Treasure Forest Tour,
food at the Choo Choo Hut Restaurant, and shopping in
the Cracker Barrel Gift Shop, plus, the Haunted Slaughter
House! The pumpkin patch, face painting, and roasting
marshmallows are also offered, and the youngsters love it!
On October 3rd, the Green Bush-Wacker Cowboy
Re-enactors are returning. Cowboys, outlaws, and people
from all walks of life from the 1800's Old West, all dressed
in the clothing of the era, will be on the Lumberjack Steam
Train, as well as stopping the train for a robbery and a good
ol' fashioned western shootout! There always seems to be
a robbery every time the train makes a run from the vintage
depot located on Highway 8 on Laona's west side.
The Cowboys are always a special event when
they visit the Camp 5 Museum complex. Horse lovers will
enjoy the mounts, vintage gun lovers will be a little envious
of the arms carried by the Cowboys, the action is fastpaced, and it is a great time for all!
The Lumberjack Steam Train leaves the depot at
11:00 a.m. and every hour on the hour until the last run at
2:00 p.m. Food is available on the grounds, and the
Cracker Barrel store is well-stocked with candy and toys.
For more info, go to: lumberjacksteamtrain.com
or call 715-674-3414.

Pelican Lake Annual Style
Show and Luncheon
If you plan to ride your snowmobile on a
Wisconsin Trail System this year, you better have a WI Trail
Pass Sticker displayed on your windshield of your
registered snowmobile.
As of July 2015, a law was
passed requiring all sleds to display a sticker.
As a Snowmobile Club of the Pickerel area,
Tombstone Pickerel Sno-Club, Inc. would like to explain a
few things to you that may help educate those of you who
have NOT joined a club in the past, but have been riding
snowmobile trails.
First… you may want to think about joining a club.
As an example, our Club cost as a Member is: $30.00 per
year for a Family or $75.00 for 3 years.
Single
Memberships are $20.00 per year, or $45.00 for 3 years.
You will receive a monthly newsletter to update you as to
what is happening in the club. Plus we have a website to
obtain updated information as needed:
www.tombstonepickerel.com
Out of your annual paid
membership, $10.00 goes to the Association of Wisconsin
Snowmobile Clubs. By adding AWSC as part of your
additional membership, you will now be able to obtain
your Wisconsin Trail Pass.
As part of the AWSC membership, you will
receive in the mail a yellow card that has your AWSC
membership number on it (example 10001). You NEED
this yellow card to obtain your WI Trail Pass. Through
AWSC, you will also receive a $3,000 Accidental/Death
Dismemberment Insurance Benefit for each family
member and child up to age 19. It includes any accident of

The Pelican Lake Women's Civic Club will host
their Annual Style Show and Luncheon on October 8th, at
Holiday Acres in Rhinelander. Doors open at 11:00 a.m.
with lunch served at noon, followed by the style show.
Club members and friends will model fashions provided
by area merchants.
Silent raffles, door prizes and a 50/50 raffle will
also be held. Tickets are available for a $20.00 donation
by calling Marsha at 715-487-5990. The club continues to
raise money for the needs and welfare of the community.
There are some rough characters around when the Cowboys
come. This guy likes nothing better than robbing Gringos! He
will be joined by a host of other "dangerous" cohorts!

I won't pretend that the Pioneer is a literary
magazine, but when an author extends a copy of his book
to you for a review, the offer shouldn't be passed up.
Having been a reader of history books most of my
life, I often enjoy some history with a fictional twist. In other
words, this story didn't happen, but it could have
happened. And, in the reading, the reader learns some
history as well as enjoying the tale.
Lubetkin has done a grand job of combining an
interesting story with known facts, and in the back pages,
he tells what is absolutely true and what came from his
colorful imagination.
This story takes the reader from Civil War days to
the expansion of the country into the western states by
railroads, and the surveyors who mapped the course,
along with the roughneck support staff who kept the
engineers fed and dry.
Of course, stolen gold is part of the story, as is the
ill-fated General George Armstrong Custer. This very
interesting fiction work also gives the reader some hard
history on early railroad building in the old west and the
type of men who opened the frontier and connected our
country from coast to coast with railroads.
One of the interesting aspects of this read is that
the story continues from the youthful days of the characters
into old age and makes the connection between their
actions as young people affected them in the later stages of
their life.
It is a great read, and I suggest you book nuts,
especially those with historical interests, jump on Amazon
and get your copy.

Eyeglasses or Contacts?
Choosing between glasses and contact lenses
mostly comes down to preferences, ease of use and
appearance. Both can correct common vision problems,
and each has pros and cons. The most essential factor is
health of your eyes.
Eyeglasses are the most popular lens choice. They
require little maintenance and you may have less risk of eye
infection than with contact lenses. While some people don't
like the look and feel of glasses, others enjoy the fashion
statement they make.
Contact lenses offer obvious advantages. They
float directly on the eyes and move with the eye for vision
correction that feels and looks natural. Unlike eyeglasses,
contacts improve peripheral vision and are especially
suitable during sports, driving and other activities. Children
often favor contacts for convenience and appearance.
Contacts may require time to learn proper use.
Conditions that make it harder to wear contacts include
allergies and dry eyes. General discomfort can occur when
wearers don't follow instructions for proper use and care.
When choosing contacts, review the types that best
meet your needs. Most people can wear contacts, even if
they prefer glasses as their primary form of vision correction.

Blackwell Job Corps students
return from assisting
with wildland fires in West
RHINELANDER, Wis. (Sept. 18, 2015) – In August,
four student firefighters from the Blackwell Job Corps
Center near Laona were part of a Wisconsin Interagency
Crew that was dispatched to Washington to assist with the
wildland fires.
They were part of a 20 person interagency crew of
employees from the Chequamegon-Nicolet National
Forest, Blackwell Job Corps Center, Wisconsin
Department of Natural Resources, National Park Service
and Bureau of Indian Affairs.
The crew was extremely busy and participated in
the suppression of four separate fires ending with the
Okanagon Complex near Conconully, Washington. During
their 21 day assignment the crew was involved with initial
attack, burn out operations, structure triage and
protection, hose lays, line construction, and mop-up.
They worked with the Okanagan-Wenatchee
National Forest, Washington Department of Natural
Resources and a multitude of other resources from
Washington and around the country. The crew camped out
in a variety of locations such as on the banks of the
Colombia River in Roosevelt, Chelan Falls Town Park,
Oroville school gymnasium and Conconully State Park.
“As far as fire assignments go, these (Blackwell)
guys got a lot of exposure to just about everything that
you’re going to see and work with out on the fire line,” said
Chris Geidel, Engine Operator on the Great Divide District
of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest who served
as the crew boss for the Wisconsin Interagency Crew.
The crew was working daily with and around
helicopters, air tankers, SEATS (single engine air tankers),
super scoopers, dozers and engines of every kind.
"It was a great experience being able to travel the
country, see new things, and meet new people. It was a
wonderful feeling to be able to save houses for families,”
said Ja-Won Barnett, one of the Blackwell Job Corps
wildland firefighters who was on the crew. “Just knowing
that I'm doing something that matters has been a life
changing experience."
This summer more than 300 fire personnel have
been dispatched from the Wisconsin Interagency
Coordination Center that is managed by the
Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest.
These fire
personnel have been mobilized to Alaska, Montana,
California, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, and Wyoming.
Many of them supporting these efforts on multiple
deployments.
Typically, fire assignments are for 14 days plus
travel and working up to 16 hour days in harsh conditions
including the smoke from the fires, heat, altitude,
mountainous terrain and sleeping in tents.
“These conditions put a lot of physical strain on
us as wildland fire fighters and the dynamic fire conditions
put a lot of mental strain on us as well,” said Lee Jensen,
Assistant Fire Management Officer for the ChequamegonNicolet National Forest Job Corps Fire Program who was
part of the crew. “We train really hard to prepare ourselves
for these conditions and something I work hard to instill in
the Blackwell Job Corps students participating in the
wildland firefighter program.”
“The guys from Blackwell came well prepared
and did really well for their first time out, especially given
the critical fire behavior that we were working in,” said
Geidel.
The Forest Service started the wildland firefighter
training program at Blackwell in October of 2014. Since
then, 18 have been certified as Wildland Firefighters and
60 are participants in the program working towards their
certification.
The Blackwell Job Corps, located in the town of
Blackwell, Wisconsin, is associated with the
Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. The center serves
about 160 students living and training on its residential
campus. Nationally, the Forest Service manages 28 Job
Corps centers in 18 states.
Blackwell offers training in office automation,
carpentry, construction crafts, health occupations,
masonry and welding. Additionally, students can earn their
high school diplomas either through a partnership with a
local high school, online or through General Educational
Development (GED) or High School Equivalency testing.

Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest
begins National Visitor Use Survey
The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest will
begin a National Visitor Use Monitoring survey October 1.
The survey aims to gather information on the
different types of forest visitors, activities the visitors
engage in and which areas of the forest receive the most
use.
“Forest employees will be conducting surveys all
over the Forest. Signs will be posted notifying visitors that
a volunteer recreation use survey is in progress,” said Jeff
Mell, Recreation Program Manager on the ChequamegonNicolet National Forest.
Responses to the visitor use survey are voluntary
and completely confidential. No names are collected as
part of the survey.
“Interviews will not take long and will be
conducted as visitors are leaving the area of the forest
where the survey is taking place on a given day,” said Mell.
“The information gathered is helpful to the Forest for
managing its recreation resources in such a way that best
meets the needs of visitors, while maintaining the quality
of the natural environment.”
The National Visitor Use Monitoring program is
an ongoing national monitoring program that uses
random sampling to develop estimates of visitor use,
characteristics, satisfaction and spending information
relevant to each national forest. Results from individual
forests are combined to provide regional and national
estimates and descriptions of visits.

Trail passes
Cont. from pg. 1
any nature. You will also receive seven issues of the
Wisconsin Snowmobile Magazine from September
through March.
Once you receive your AWSC yellow card, there
are 3 ways to obtain your WI Trail Pass:
1. You can go online to the Association of WI
Snowmobiles (AWSC) and download the WI Trail Pass
form. Complete it online with the AWSC Membership
Number and the DNR Registration number (example SN
4300AB) for each snowmobile. And, don’t forget your
snowmobiles should be registered through the DNR.
Note: The DNR has now changed your registration from
two years to three years. You can apply for up to eight
Wisconsin Trail Passes under your AWSC card
number/name. Then, use either your debit or credit card
for payment of $10.00 per sled.
2. You can print out the form, and mail it to AWSC
with a check.
3. You can call the AWSC Office and give them
the information needed over the phone.
Once AWSC has received the information, they
have a 24 hour turn around, uploading your information to
the WI DNR Office. The DNR will immediately mail out your
stickers directly to you in the mail.
If you DO NOT join a club and AWSC, you will pay
$30.00 per sled per year. It’s a no-brainer to join a club, as
dollars are saved. The Trail Pass money is going back
into the Wisconsin Trail System to help better our
Snowmobile Trails. So, get a head start now, join a club,
so the Trail Pass Permit process can get started before the
snow arrives.
Tombstone Pickerel Sno Club, Inc. is one of the
top five largest Snowmobile Clubs in the State of
Wisconsin, formed back in the 1970’s. The club is
approximately 300 members strong and growing this year.
It has it’s own club house and garage shed on County Rd
DD, in Pickerel. The club owns two New Holland tractors
and a new 2016 New Holland tractor on its way next
month. The club has three grooming drags, and a work
pickup truck.
The officers are President Eric Stoffregen, Vice
President Ken Mikkelson, Secretary Mary A. Schmitzer
and Treasurer Alan Quig. Jacquie Bailey is currently
doing the Memberships. The Board consists of 12 great
people. Steve Bailey has been the clubs Trail Boss and
maintains our tractors with the help of a few on hand.
Nobody knows our trail system better than Steve. In 2013
Steve was also named Groomer of the Year by AWSC. It’s
an honor to have Steve win this state-wide award on behalf
of the club.
The Pickerel-Pearson area has had some
wonderful landowners, who over the years, have
continued to allow our club permission to access their
land and having snowmobile trails go through their
property. We cannot stress enough how appreciative it
is to have these landowners open their land for the
snowmobile enthusiast. The beauty of the winter trails,
wild critters, snow covered pines, lakes and rivers are
breathtaking and unexplainable to those who don’t have
an opportunity to see the great white outdoors at its best.
The club grooms approximately 120 to 140 miles
of trails each winter. Late summer and fall are a busy time.
Brushing and mowing of the trails along with signing are
done. Signs get old, or knocked down from the past
winter of deep snow, wind or storms. It is also a time to
repair and check over the equipment. A lot goes on in the
fall, more than many realize.
The club is having a work day on Saturday,
September 26th, starting at 9:30 a.m. from the club house
garage.
If you wish to join this club and help out in any
way, please feel free to contact any of the above people, or
come down to the club house. Memberships can be taken
at 9:30 a.m. and again from noon and all afternoon.
If you have snowmobile related items, such as
sleds, parts or clothing to sell, feel free to set up your table
on the club house grounds with others and sell your goods.
Again, if you want to snowmobile on trails this
winter, you need that Trail Pass, so why not join a club that
grooms for you? Let it be Tombstone Pickerel Sno Club!
Happy Sledding….. Happy Trails…

AARP
Chapter
1191
Janet Glime
The speaker for the September meeting of the
Nicolet AARP Chapter 1191 was Janet Glime from the
Marinette & Oconto Counties Literacy Council, Inc. Janet
Glime spoke to the AARP members about the services and
programs provided for adult basic education and English
language learning in the two counties. Those services help
to improve the quality of life for adults by helping them to
improve literacy in reading, writing, comprehension,
speaking, math, and computer skills. There is a definite
need in Oconto County by some persons lacking complete
formal education or sometimes foreign born. If you know
someone who wants to improve their reading skills or
someone who is willing to volunteer as a tutor contact
Janet Glime at 920-897-4422 or go online at
www.moliteracy.org.
AARP Chapter events coming up include the Fall
Social at the Anderson Supper Club on September 30,
2015. Also the AARP Chapter sponsors the New Rock Fall
Dinner at the Lakewood Presbyterian Church on October
5, 2015. The next monthly meeting on October 27, 2015 will
be a pot luck dinner and auction starting at 5:30 PM.
All persons 50 and over are invited to join the local
AARP Chapter. AARP meetings are social, entertaining,
and informative. Meetings are held at the Lakewood
Presbyterian Church on the fourth Tuesday of each month
starting at 7:00 pm. Contact Joyce West, Membership
Chairman, at 715-276-9409.
Submitted by Dick Culver, Public Relations Chairman
James Beck Cancer Center to host
Scrap-Out Cancer on October 16
Do you have a passion for scrapbooking? Share
that passion with others during the seventh annual ScrapOut Cancer event at Ministry Saint Mary’s Hospital on
Friday, October 16, from 5 - 9 p.m. This fun event brings
people together to scrapbook and raise awareness of
maintaining women’s health and treating breast cancer.
Join staff from the James Beck Cancer Center and
others for this FREE fun-filled evening of scrapbooking,
card-making, and education. Bring your own projects,
tools and papers. We’ll have a cozy set-up with plenty of
tables around the fireplace, overlooking the wooded area
and pond at Ministry Saint Mary’s. The ladies from The Old
School will once again be on hand and offering a make and
take.
Throughout the night, we’ll provide important
information on women’s nutrition, including a presentation
from Hope Williams, RD, CD, CDE, CLS, health and
wellness specialist at Ministry Medical Group Rhinelander.
In this presentation we will be discussing how a woman’s
nutrition changes from her teenage years into her 20’s,
through her childbearing years, and then into the senior
years. Also, we’ll be talking about the importance of
healthy eating to maintaining optimal health and some
easy ways to make sure we are getting all of our vitamins
and minerals each day.
Door prizes will be given away approximately
every 20 minutes, and all registered attendees will receive
a goody bag.
Check-in begins at 4:30 p.m. Arrive anytime
between 4:30 and 5 p.m. to settle in and start working on
your card-making or scrapbooking projects. After the
speaker, we will provide beverages, sandwiches and
snacks throughout the night while you scrapbook and
have fun with other attendees.
Space is limited and pre-registration is preferred.
To register for this FREE public event, please call
800.362.9900 today.
This event is sponsored by the staff of James
Beck Cancer Center at Ministry Saint Mary’s Hospital. The
James Beck Cancer Center at Ministry Saint Mary's
Hospital nurtures long, close relationships and ongoing
care with cancer patients, whether in the form of future
treatments, palliative care, rehabilitation, checkups,
support groups or providing new information. The goal is
to meet every need of every patient, and to be a trusted
resource for their families.
