Lincoln Building
Committee meets

The Building Committee for the Town of Lincoln
met at the County Courthouse Thursday, May 10. The
committee had sent out requests for proposals to
architects and design firms for further investigation on
which path to take on building a new town hall that would
be the best option for the town.
The committee sent out sixteen requests for
proposals and received nine requests back and
interviewed the four best groups. The groups were
Architects Group Limited, Raasch Engineers & Architects,
Bay Architects and Hunter Engineering and Design.
The interviews were held in closed session.
When the meeting went back to open session, the
committee informed the people that the next step would
be to get information on general contractors. If the
committee presents to the public, a building plan that
goes through an architect, there will probably be a general
contractor. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, May 22 at
the town hall at 5 p.m.
Clean Boats/Clean Water meeting
In Townsend
Clean Boats/Clean Waters (CBCW) training will
be held at the Townsend Town Hall for the Townsend
Flowage Association and the Inland Lakes P&R District #1
on Saturday May 19, 2012 at 9:00 a.m. Training will be
provided by Danielle Block who is the AIS Grants
Coordinator & Aquatic Plant Management Specialist for
the WDNR. Danielle Block will be assisted by Amanda
Strick who is Oconto County’s first Aquatic Invasive
Species (AIS) Coordinator.
Amanda Strick started in this position this year
and she will discuss what her job involves in Oconto
County.
The meeting will be open to anyone from other
lakes associations who wish to attend. Anyone interested
in the CBCW program in the Townsend area should call

Potawatomi & City of Crandon
announce funding for third
police officer
Donation Announced During National Police Week
(Crandon, WI) - The Forest County Potawatomi
Community announced a two-year commitment today of
$49,964 per year to the Crandon Police Department
towards the hiring of an additional police officer. The
announcement comes during National Police Week and
marks the latest investment by the Tribe to assist the area's
public safety services.
“Police Week is a time to stop and thank law
enforcement for all that they do to keep us safe, as well as
honor those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice,” said
Chairman Gus Frank of the Forest County Potawatomi
Community. “Public safety is a cornerstone of any
community and the Forest County Potawatomi are
pleased to support the hiring of a third, full-time police
officer in Crandon.”
“Our officers and law enforcement personnel
work extremely hard to make sure our community is safe
for our residents and businesses,” said Dan Packard,
Crandon Police Chief. “The Potawatomi have been a
strong partner of law enforcement and we thank them for
their continued commitment.”
The Tribe has a history of dedication to law
enforcement in Forest County. Last year, the Forest
County Sheriff's Department received $22,400 for
software to be used in squad cars. The Town of Laona's
Police Department received $9,950 to purchase vital
equipment in 2009. The Wabeno Police Department was
awarded $15,901 for portable alcohol breath sensor
machines and other law enforcement tools in 2008, and in
2007 the Crandon Police Department was awarded a
three-year grant to support police officer payroll.
“We are grateful to the Potawatomi for their
continued efforts on making Crandon not only a safer
community, but also a great place to live,” said Crandon
Mayor Rob Jaeger.

Jack Lamar Pavilion Grand
Opening Celebration-Elcho
The United Church of Christ is holding a Grand
Opening Celebration for their Jack Lamar Pavilion at
N11283 Dorr Street Elcho.
The all day celebration will be held on Saturday,
May 26, 2012 from 12:00 Noon to 12:00 midnight. Join the
fun with dance, food and drink.

Band play with special guests Mollie B fron RFD TV Polka
Show and Karl from Kountry Dutchmen from 2:00-6:00
p.m.

service to Forest County

Marissa Popp together were honored at the March 24th
Herb Kohl award ceremony at DePere High School. Award
founder Herb Kohl was present to acknowledge
excellence in teaching and learning among Wisconsin's
best.
Wabeno Area School District's K-12 technology
coordinator and business education teacher, Danyell
Franti, is surprised and excited to share the honor of her
selection as Herb Kohl Fellowship winner with her district.
Completing her second year with Wabeno, Franti is proud
to represent the district's students, staff and
administration, who have recognized the importance of
business education and technology integration.
Danyell's application emphasized her passion for
technology and how she teaches students and staff
members concerning its appropriate use. “Our students
are growing up in an instantaneous world, and technology
has made many of us impatient. I teach students to think
before they post (blog, email, webpage, or status update)
online because the repercussions can be long lasting.
Often students think the anonymity of posting online hides
them from all consequences. The reality is, I need to teach
our students proper netiquette, so they understand the
effects.”

Service notifies crime victims when offenders
are released from jail
Forest County residents will now have quick
access to custody information on offenders in the county
jail. Sheriff John Dennee recently activated the WI-VINE
service, an automated service that notifies registered
crime victims, law enforcement personnel and concerned
citizens and community members when offenders are
released from jail, and also provides around-the-clock
access to offender information either by telephone or use
of the internet. In addition to crime victims, the WI-VINE
system can be used by family members, neighbors,
business owners, law enforcement officers, criminal
justice professionals - anyone impacted by crime - who is
interested in knowing the location and custody status of
criminal defendants and offenders housed in the Forest
County Jail.
Protecting the citizens of Forest County is always
our highest priority," said Sheriff Dennee. "The WI-VINE
service provides an added level of protection because it
gives everyone access to timely and accurate information
on offenders in our county and other counties throughout
the state that currently offer the WI-VINE service. Our
department is appreciative of the support we received
locally in order to participate in this grant and are
delighted that we could make this important service
available to the public."

interested in inquiring about an offender or receiving
automated notification of an offender's change in status
can call 1-888-944-8463 or log on to www.vinelink.com
and search by an offender's name or booking number to
obtain custody information. Those choosing to register
for automated notification will be able to register multiple
phones and/or e-mail addresses where they will be

Are you wondering what happens to all those Box
Tops and Milk Caps? Well…
The community has brought in successful donations
to support and grow the learning environment for our local
school. This school year the Crandon P.T.O. has held two Box
Top challenges, one in the beginning of the school year and
the recent one ended in April. The winning classroom that
brought in the highest number of Box Tops received a special
reward, although, every class has indeed received a special
reward purchased with the money brought in from clipping,
collecting, and their own hard work. With the first challenge
our school brought in $1,175.00 and was able to purchase
separate playground equipment for each grade level! Besides
Box Tops and Milk Caps schools can earn extra cash by
collecting Campbell’s soup labels, Coke Product rewards
caps and other product programs. In this day every little bit
helps!
In the last couple years the Crandon P.T.O. has also
connected the school and community by hosting events such
as Open-Gym Nights, (a very successful) Elementary Talent
Show, Family Fun Nights, and numerous Pop N Reads to
mention a few. All with the help of Parents, Grand-Parents,
Teachers, Principals, Administration, and Community
Volunteers that took time to volunteer and commit to our kids!
The Crandon P.T.O. is 100% for the kids.

Team Green, consisting of junior and senior high
members of the Oconto County 4-H Robotics Project, will be
hosting a robot demonstration at the Lakes Country Public
Library, Lakewood on Saturday, May 12th. Stop in any time
between 10am and noon to see the robot in action. They are
excited to show the community what they have
accomplished and how others can support or participate in
this growing robotics program.
This club has been involved in the competitive
sport of VEX robotics for the past three years. The VEX
Robotics Competition is the largest and fastest growing
middle and high school robotics program globally, with
more than 4,800 teams from 23 countries playing in
tournaments worldwide. More information on VEX Robotics

Team Green was formed in 2009 as an Oconto
County 4-H robotics project and has competed in numerous
regional and national competitions. During the last three
competition seasons, the team has received many awards
for excellence, programming, quality, and creativity.
The 2011-2012 Team Green members are Brandon
and Justin Dehne (Doty), Jennifer and Matthew Lyng
(Oconto Falls), and Jake and Jordan Sellhausen
(Lakewood). Team mentor is Kent Lyng, electrical engineer

Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest's All Terrain
Vehicle (ATV), motor bike, horse and mountain bike trails
will be opened for use as of May1 .This opening is for all
Forest Service jurisdiction trails. Trails in the Bayfield
County area are open as of April 27.
The new Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) is also
now available on line at http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/cnnf. Hard
copies of the MVUM will be available for free in all offices
as of mid-May. The MVUM is the map that shows users
where it is legal to ride.

Forest County Historical Museum
getting ready for summer
With the approach of the summer season, the members of the Forest County
Historical and Genealogical Society have met and made plans for cleaning and new
displays at the Museum (105 W. Jackson, Crandon). Anyone who would like to know
more about the Museum or would be interested in helping there are many different jobs
needed to be filled to get the Museum ready and open to the public on a regular basis.
Well trained guides are most important to provide a pleasant educational
experience for summer visitors. If you are interested in learning about the history of
Forest County and would have a couple hours a week to share with others, please call
Sandy at 715-478-3753 to find out more about becoming a guide. This summer, if any of
the guides are interested, Sandy will be teaching them how to add pictures from our
collection to the Heritage-On- Line site which is very popular with genealogy
researchers and will be good publicity for our Museum. This project would give you a
chance to see many old photos that have not yet been put on display.
Each spring the building gets a head-to-toe cleaning and new displays are
assembled so that all looks fresh and inviting to new visitors and to those who have
visited many time. We are currently looking for some collections or items of historical
significance to display for the summer. These items will be on loan for the summer
months only but are a nice addition to our regular collection. If you have items you
would like to display from Memorial Day to Art in the Square, please call Winnie at 715478-3456.
The Museum will be open for the day on May 28 before and during the Memorial
Day Celebration. Regular summer hours will begin on June 5. Please become a
volunteer to help us tell the colorful story of Forest County.

Nearly 600 students will graduate from Nicolet College this spring during commencement ceremonies on the
Nicolet campus Saturday and Sunday, May 19 and 20. This includes 470 graduates who will receive an associate
degree, diploma, or certificate from the college and another 125 students who will have earned their GED or HSED
through the college’s Academic Success program.
Ceremonies will be held at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Saturday, May 19, in the Nicolet College Theatre for graduates
receiving a degree, diploma or certificate. The ceremony for Academic Success graduates will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday,
May 20, also in the theatre.
The commencement speaker at Saturday ceremonies will be Dave Juday, chairman of the board of Ideal
Industries. The Juday family is a major contributor to the Nicolet College Foundation to help students in financial need.
Juday served for 10 years on the Illinois Board of Education as well as on numerous other boards devoted to improving
communities.
At the ceremony Sunday, Joni Theobald, Lac du Flambeau education director, will deliver the commencement
address. The Lac du Flambeau tribe was awarded the Nicolet College Foundation’s 2011 Friends and Partners Award for
its commitment in promoting education.

Laona Elementary Announces No School Dates
The School Board of the School District of Laona, at
their November meeting, approved four additional days during
the 2011-12 school year in which K-6 students will not have
school. The last date is: Wednesday, May 2nd . This day will be
used by the elementary staff to work on the District's
“Response to Intervention” plan that must be submitted to the
DPI by the end of this school year. RTI requires that staff
provide alternative instruction to students who are not making
adequate yearly progress. This alternative instruction must be
provided prior to a student being considered for special
education services.
This date will also be announced on the District
website and reminder notices will be sent home prior to this
date. 7-12 high school students will still have school on the
above dates. State instructional guidelines allow for this type
of scheduling as the yearly required minutes of instruction for
elementary students are substantially less than for 7-12
students.

Jesus on Sunday, May
6, 2012 in the early
morning hours. She
was born to the late
Robert and Betty
Collins in Antigo, WI
December 2, 1961.
Cora was one
of the most unique
and amazing women a
person could cross
paths with. She was
the type of woman
who gave selflessly,
and did not expect
anything in return. It was about knowing she could make
someone smile and laugh or help them out in a time of need
even if that meant she went without. She had always said
and was a firm believer in by doing good for others God
would smile on her one day. After so many years of
struggling and sickness, in the past year she was able to
find her faith in Jesus-which finally set her free. Free from
pain, heartache, and peace with the questions that were
never answered. God did indeed bless her each and every
day in so many ways. She was a wonderful mother who
gave the best gift a person could ever ask for-LOVE. She
made you to see and appreciate the little things in life. She
had forgiven those who needed forgiveness-loved all and
most important believed and was not afraid anymore. God
bless her heart for it is most precious!
Survivors include: sons-Ryan P. Collins, Douglas
D. Luterbach, daughters-Stacey M. Luterbach, Jessica J.
Grimes, Four Grandchildren-Evan, Makaylah, Jace, and
Owen, boyfriend-Dave Hendrickson, and Siblings-Debbie,
Rick, B.J., Tom, Jenny, Candace, and Robin.
Visitation was on Saturday, May 12 from 10:00am12:00 noon at the Weber-Hill Funeral Home, Wabeno.
Funeral Service followed at 12:00 noon with Pastor Don
Dewing officiating. Cora will be laid to rest next to her father

WILMA M. GUNTHER, age 90, of Mountain, passed away
Sunday, May 13, 2012 at the Heartland Hospice, Milwaukee,
Visitation will be on Saturday, May 19 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00

service will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Stephen Mueller

DEVON BRADLEY WEBB, age 4, of Appleton formerly of
Wabeno, passed away after a long courageous battle with
cancer on May 9, 2012. Devon was born June 24, 2007 in
Rhinelander the son of Devon Lee Webb and Melissa Rae
Weber.
His super nova light, lit up the world of everyone’s
life. Right to the end Devon never gave up his fight. He will
be sadly missed by his family.

Appleton. Brother: Zadyn Ryder Ingram, Appleton.

MARVIN R. YUNKE, age 69 of Lakewood, WI passed away
on May 11, 2012 at Aurora Medical Center in Green Bay.
Marv was born on June 4, 1942 in Marinette, WI to Otto and
Helen (Onishick) Yunke.
Marv enjoyed hunting, fishing and spend time with
his family. He was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in
need and would love to talk and tell stories. Marv's favorite
motto was “I made someone smile today”.
Marv is survived by his wife: Catherine, Mother:
Helen, Daughter: Constance Perry, Sons: Scott Yunke, Ryan
Yunke and Clarence Robert (Shannon) Perry Jr., Brothers:
Robert, Jerry and Patrick (Leann) Yunke. Marv is further
survived by 10 grand children, 1 great-grandchild and
numerous nieces, nephews and many, many friends.
He is preceded in death by his father Otto and
Daughter Colleen Roxanne Perry.
A gathering of Marv's friends and family was held
on Wednesday May 16, 2012 from 5-6 PM at Oughton Park
in Townsend and was followed by a memorial service.

Dear Editor:
I would like to take this opportunity to let the
Forest County Sheriff's Department know what a great
idea they have had by forming the inmate work crew. By
utilizing a resource available in Crandon from our county
jail, the work crew that picks up trash on our roadsides and
performs other community service projects I feel will yield
at least two-fold.
The cleaning up of our roadside areas of trash is
so needed and appreciated by those who try to keep our
county and area a beautiful place to enjoy.
The people on this work crew and those involved
with it should gain a pride for what they have
accomplished and an added appreciation for the beauty in
our part of the world.
What better way to do this then to be our great
outdoors helping others.

SkillsUSA Championships.
After serving as an officer in the Wabeno High
School chapter and attending fall leadership training
sessions, Stephanie ran for a position as a Wisconsin
SkillsUSA state officer in April of 2011. She was elected
to the office of District III Vice-President, and served
from June 2011, until June of 2012. As part of her duties
as an officer, she represented Wisconsin at the MidAmerica Conference in Nebraska, and was a voting
delegate at last summer's SkillsUSA National
Conference in Kansas City.
This school year, Stephanie continued her
work as the treasurer for Wabeno SkillsUSA and took on
a role as a leadership trainer at the Wisconsin SkillsUSA
Fall Leadership Conference. She talked to our state
legislators in Madison to promote SkillsUSA and
Technology Education in Wisconsin. Over 1700
students took part in the Wisconsin SkillsUSA State
Conference and Skill Competitions held April 17 and 18.
Ms. Harris was part of the state officer team presiding
over the conference as well as a competitor in the
Promotional Bulletin Board contest. Her team's bulletin
board took second place honors.
Along with being in SkillsUSA, Stephanie has
maintained a 4.0 GPA, is a member of the National
Honor Society, and was last years' Lions Club Honor
Student for mathematics. The SkillsUSA national motto
of “Champions at Work” certainly describes Ms.
Stephanie Harris.

SkillsUSA is a national organization that strives to
develop technical and professional skills in young people
and prepare them to become excellent citizens and
members of our country's workforce. What began in the
late 1960's as VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of
America) has grown to become an organization known as
SkillsUSA with over 300,000 student and professional
members across the country. At Wabeno High School,
there are 26 student members in our local chapter.
Stephanie Harris, a senior at Wabeno High
School, is completing her high school career as a
SkillsUSA member with a list of impressive
accomplishments. She has truly been a shining example
of the type of student that SkillsUSA can develop. As a
freshman, Stephanie won a gold medal as part of her
Chapter Display team at state competitions and competed
at Nationals in Kansas City. As a sophomore, she took a
second place medal in Chapter Display at the Wisconsin
Over the last few months American Legion Post
44 out of Wabeno has been hard at work for the
community. After this years Fish o Ree, We have had many
Gun less Poultry Shoots, An Ice Cream social for the
Grade School, and an Awards Dinner (Congratulations to
John Vandenlangberg this years Legionnaire of the Year.).
In addition to all this your post has donated $200.00 to St
Baldricks kids with cancer, $400.00 to Suzanna Diamond
for a sponsored trip to Europe, $300.00 to the Wabeno
High School Skills USA, and $450.00 to Boy scouts of
America Troop 1048. Showing you that each and every
time you support the Post it helps us support our local
community.
This year is gearing up to be another busy one
with many updates to the Veterans Memorial Park,
Scholarships, The Weiner Fest, Multiple Parades, and

Interim President John Schnorr convened the
first annual meeting of the Wisconsin Off-Road Vehicle
Park on Saturday, May 12. The meeting was held at the
Potawatomi Bingo & Casino Conference Center.
The group in attendance was large and
enthusiastic as Schnorr brought everyone up-to-date with
the web site (www.worvpi.org), the current feasibility
study and business plan that are underway as well as a
review of the April 13 workshop that was held at Mole Lake
Casino. A permanent board of directors was elected by
voting members in attendance.
WORVPI was formed as a non-profit organization
in 2011 in order to take all the necessary steps to bring a
motorized recreation area (MRA) to Forest County. In
2006, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources
was given a mandate to develop a MRA park within the
state.
Individuals, groups and businesses that are
enthusiastic about motorized recreation including Jeeps,
4WDs, ATVs and dual sport motorcycles that want to see a
park developed in Forest County are encouraged to join
the rapidly growing group. Memberships start as low as
$10.

The Chain of Lakes Chapter of the Ruffed Grouse
Society and Tall Tail Kennels is giving away an English
Setter puppy to a lucky young hunter.
Willard Greenman, owner of Tall Tail Kennels, is
donating an eight-week old English Setter puppy. The
puppy wi l be given away free to a local youngster under
the age of 21. To be considered, an applicant simply has
to fill out the attached questionnaire. It is important that
applicants have complete support and approval from their
parents, and have the ability to provide a good home for
the puppy. A successful applicant must have completed,
or have plans to complete, a hunter safety course.
This puppy comes from an excellent line of pure
bred English Setters, and with the right training, can be
expected to be a superb bird dog. The mother's family
tree includes a dog named Bozeann's Mosely, a legendary
Field Trial champion. The father's line comes from setters
bred by Dr. Marty Smith, co-founder of the “Doctor's Foster
and Smith” pet supply company. In addition to donating
the puppy for free, Willard Greenman has offered to help
the new owner train the puppy.
The Chain of Lakes Chapter of the Ruffed Grouse
Society's oversight committee will choose the winning
applicant by June 1. The committee will use the following
questionnaire to decide who the winner is, and may
contact applicants and their parents directly to ask
additional questions.
To get the puppy, just answer the following
questionnaire, in your own words and to the best of your
ability.
1.
How do you plan to take care of the puppy? Tell us
where you plan to keep the dog, and how you propose to
exercise him.
2.
Do you currently own dogs? Have you owned
dogs in the past?
3.
Give us a brief description of your hunting
experience or why you are interested in learning to hunt.
4.
Include a short statement from your parents giving
their approval for you to own and care for a dog.

Iron Mountain VA Hospital/Clinic Parking Lot update- the main patient
parking lot is undergoing 2 phases of repaving, with each phase lasting about 30 to
45 days, beginning April 16, 2012. Patients can be dropped off at the main entrance
and the marked available parking areas will have shuttle bus service for patients
and visitors between the hospital/clinic entrances and the parking lots.
Veterans needing transportation to medical appointments in the VISN 12 area
should call 1-800-215-8262 ext 33849 for the Veterans Transportation Service
Manager, Isaac Armstrong. Mr Armstrong is located in Rm 1268 in the Iron
Mountain VA Travel Office. The VTS/Travel office can assist Veterans with Hoptel
approval and reservations, travel to VA Clinics and Hospitals.
Travel Pay will be going to a direct deposit process for after hours
payments, and applications need to be completed before the end of 2013. See the
Travel Office the next time you have an appointment ONLY IF you are authorized
travel pay.
VA is trying to cut costs by encouraging Veterans to use the VA Medical
Center closest to their homes. Letters advising Veterans of this policy have been
mailed and a waiver form is included. Please contact the Iron Mountain VAMC
Travel office to submit the form.

Meeting to Order at 5:30 p.m. Present: Jim Aschinger,

President Jim Aschinger called the Regular Meeting to Order at 6:00 p.m. Present: Jim Aschinger, Scott
Reeves, Kay Connors, Dave Bardo, Dawn Cote and Sherry Kramer to take the minutes. Paula Johnson was absent
and Rick Krawze arrived at 7:20 p.m. There were also nine (9) guests in attendance. Notice has been posted in
accordance with Wisc. Stat. 19.84.
Jim Aschinger led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Kay Connors administered the Oath of Office to Jim Aschinger. The Reorganization of Board will be tabled
until the next meeting.
Motion by Reeves, seconded by Connors to approve the Amended Agenda with number corrections. All in
Appearances - none
PUBLIC FORUM(10 minutes):
A thank you was given to Deb Kruger and the LEO Club for an excellent job on the Talent Show. Other comments
included prom changes, early start time for May School Board Meeting, Softball/BAseball field information, and an inquiry
about possible road closing for games.
ADDITIONAL OPEN ACTION ITEMS:
Motion by Connors, seconded by Reeves to approve the Open and Closed Regular Meeting Minutes dated
Monday, March 12, 2012. All in favor, motion carried.
Motion by Reeves, seconded by Connors to approve Minutes of the Special Open Meeting dated Monday,
March 26, 2012. All in favor, motion carried.
Motion by Connors, seconded by Reeves to approve Disbursements and Wires paid for the period of March 9 April 11, 2012 = $254,697.26. All in favor, motion carried.
Motion by Connors, seconded by Johnson to approve Purchase Orders for the period of March 8 - April 11, 2012
= $1,191.37. All in favor, motion carried.
This is the first year for a DPI Scholarship Report requirement. Alice Sturzl was instrumental in completing the
report for committee approval. Motion by Connors, seconded by Reeves to accept the Trends and Patterns in Awarding
Scholarships and Other Forms of Recognition. All in favor, motion carried. A thank you was given to Alice Sturzl.
An Rti Presentation was given outlining the costs and research done between two (2) Universal Screener
options. The mount of $3,887.50 would be partially paid with Microsoft Grand monies. After discussion, motion by
Reeves, seconded by Connors to approve MAPS for K-11th grade. All in favor, motion carried.
Dawn Cote, business manager, discussed the options for Refinancing of the Referendum Building Debt and
Unfunded Liability. With this refinancing, the Referendum Building Debt interest rate would go from 3.5% to 2.75%. The
Unfunded Liability interest rate would go from 6.25% to 4.5%. Motion by Connors, seconded by Reeves to refinance the
Referendum Building Debt and Unfunded Liability Loans as outlined above. Vote was Connor - yes, Reeves - yes,
Aschinger - yes, Krawze - absent, Johnson - absent. Motion carried.
The 345.6-Graduation Requirements Policy was presented and needed changes discussed. Motion by
Connors, seconded by Reeves to approve the amended Graduation Requirements Policy as presented. All in favor,
motion carried.
The School Use Policy was distributed and discussion was held on key distribution and building use. Craig
Albrecht stated that he would submit a list of one (1) adult who would be responsible for the building/activities for each of
the nights the school would be opened. After discussion, motion by Connors, seconded by Aschinger to open the gyms on
nights when no activities are being held at school from 6-9 p.m. Monday - Friday with a log-in sheet and at least one (1)
adult who would be responsible for the building and supervision. All in favor, motion carried.
The possible Change of Monthly Board Meetings to Second Monday was discussed. Motion by Connors,
seconded by Aschinger to approve the change of School Board Meetings to the 2nd Monday of the month. All in favor,
motion carried.
Rick Krawze arrived at 7:20 p.m.
INFORMATIONAL ITEMS:
Brent Stamper gave his Maintenance/DASHIR Report. The cost of a buzzer system as well as the cost for one
(1) additional card reader was discussed. He also presented and explained proposals received for boiler replacement.
This will be tabled for a future meeting. Sidewalk replacement proposals were also distributed.
Dawn Cote gave her Business Manager's Report that included information received from Benefit Partners and
would like to replace our current insurance benefit broker, Ansay and Associates. The Board felt the change would be
beneficial. She also discussed student insurance options. A change will be made from 1st Agency to Student Assurance.
She also discussed Title 1 Schoolwide application completion, Health Care Cost Webinar, Wisconsin Retirement Report,
quarterly reports, E-rate, surveys, and inventories.
Dr. Bardo gave his Administrator's Report. He presented an article titled "Laona High School Readies
Students for Success After Graduation". Other information was given concerning lunch schedule changes, concession
wagon, a donation received from the VFW to the Band fund, and the Employee Handbook, WASB will be contacted for a
quote for the formulation of an Employee Handbook.
BOARD MEMBER REPORTS:
Scott Reeves gave information on summer basketball camp dates.
Kay Connors congratulated the Forensic Students for their qualification for the state competition.
Jim Aschinger distributed a letter concerning the Laona School Forest

Motion by Connors, seconded by Krawze to enter into closed session pursuant to the following statutes for the
following reasons: Wis. Stat. 19-85(1)(c)(g)(e) for personnel matters, legal matters and negotiations. The motion carried
with the following roll call vote: Aschinger, Reeves, Krawze and Connor voting yes.
Motion by Connors, seconded by Krawze to adjourn the meeting. All in favor, motion carried.

24 hours a day through the toll-free number, 1-888-94448463, seven days-a-week for callers who have questions
or require additional help.
"The WI-VINE service has been in operation in
various areas throughout the United States throughout the
past sixteen years, and the service is certainly designed
with the victim in mind. It is very user friendly," Sheriff
Dennee said. "What makes it special is the automatic
notification feature. As long as you've got a telephone or a
computer, you can receive an automated alert anytime of
the day or night. This level of protection and notification
are critically important to anyone who's concerned about
the whereabouts of an offender."
The activation of the WI-VINE service was funded
by a grant from the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA),
U.S. Department of Justice. Since 2005, the Statewide
Automated Victim Information and Notification (SAVIN)
grant program administered by the BJA has nearly
doubled the number of states providing automated victim
notification. The goal of the SAVIN program is to increase
public safety and improve vital criminal justice decisions
by ensuring that victims and community members are
given timely and accurate information that enhances their
ability to protect themselves.

Beware of Jury Duty Scam
Beware of a scam which has so far been reported
in 11 states and may be targeting Wisconsinites soon.
This scam, known as the "Jury Duty Scam," plays out as
follows:
The phone rings, you pick it up, and the caller
identifies himself as an officer of the court. He says you
failed to report for jury duty and that a warrant is out for
arrest. You say you never received a notice. To clear it up,
the caller says he'll need some information for "verification
purposes" - your birth date, social security number, maybe
even a credit card number.
This is when you should hang up the phone. It's a
scam.
Jury scams have been around for years, but have
seen a resurgence in recent months. Communities in
more than a dozen states have issued public warnings
about cold calls from people claiming to be court officials
seeking personal information. As a rule, court officers
never ask for confidential information over the phone;
they generally correspond with prospective jurors via
mail.
The scam's bold simplicity may be what makes it
so effeective. Facing the unexpected threat of arrest,
victims are caught off guard and may be quick to part with
some information to defuse the situation.
"They get you scared first," says a special agent
in the Minneapolis field office who has heard the
complaints. " They get people saying, 'Oh, my gosh! I'm
not a criminal. What's going on?'" That's when the
scammer dangles a solution - a fine, payable by credit
card, that will clear up the problem.
With enough information, scammers can assume
your identity and empty your bank accounts.
"It seems like a very simple scam," the agent
adds. The trick is putting people on the defensive then
reeling them back in with the promise of a clean slate. "It's
kind of ingenious. It's social engineering."
The jury scam is a simple variation of the identitytheft ploys that have proliferated in recent years as
personal information and good credit have become
thieves' preferred prey, particularly on the internet.
Scammers might tap your information to make a purchase
on your credit card, but could just as easily sell your
information to the highest bidder on the internet's black
market.
Protecting yourself is key: Never give out
personal information when you receive an unsolicited
phone call.

Her goal as an educator is to engage students by
making real life connections for career and education
paths, which both require business or technology skills.
Franti feels that with the growth of resources available at
our finger tips, educators need to embrace those
resources instead of fearing them.
Another area of passion for Mrs. Franti is teaching
students "how" to learn online. Online learning is here to
stay and her goal is to prepare students for post secondary
education or careers. Many students have never been
taught to learn online and need instruction, just like with
reading. “We don't give a child a book and expect them to
read it. Instead we walk them through the process of
identifying letters and then sounds and sight words. This
process must happen before a student can read. I feel the
same way with technology. We need to introduce them to
online learning in baby steps before we can expect them to
be successful in that environment.”
Franti is responsible for training Wabeno Area
School staff in the area of technology, in addition to her
role as a teacher. “Both of these positions allow me to do a
job I love. I feel so fortunate that the district supports this
position and understands the importance of business and
technology in our school.” The honor of the Herb Kohl
Fellowship selection comes with an award of grant money
which Franti plans to utilize to integrate more technology
resources at the elementary level.
Marissa Popp, daughter of Richard and Elizabeth
Popp, is a senior at Wabeno High School. Marissa says,
“The Kohl Excellence Scholarship was the most difficult
scholarship I applied for.” The Kohl is an extremely
competitive scholarship with three rounds of judging: local
school, regional, and state level. Her selection as the Herb
Kohl Excellence Scholarship winner is added to an
impressive list of high school accomplishments. Past
honors include Lions Honors, Student, All-Conference
Academic Achievement Award, Academic Letter Award,
Highest Honor Roll, and selection to the National Honor
Society. Marissa possesses leadership qualities evident in
her work as a member of the student council, class officer,
and on the court, track, and field of the sports arena. Cocurricular activities include Forest County Teen Court,
band, Positive Action Committee, Future Business
Leaders of America, and prom committee.
Popp feels “receiving the award is an amazing
honor. I am exceedingly grateful that my school and my
hard work were recognized.”
Marissa plans to attend the University of
Wisconsin-Stout with a major in Dietetics. Her desired
career path is one which assists people with choosing a
healthy diet and achieving wellness. “Earning the Kohl
Excellence Scholarship was one of the highlights of my
senior year, and is a great addition to the memories I've
gained from Wabeno High School.”

materials to the Crandon Library, children get help with a
Summer Reading Program. Authors are invited to speak at

Laona Sports Show
Laona School news
Laona Elementary teachers have been working hard in recent months
to set up their RtI and Book Room. On May 14, the Laona School
Board met with teachers for a "tour" and explanation of how this room
will be used. Pictured is first grade teacher, Cara Shepherd, explaining
the data wall to board members Jim Aschinger, Rick Krawze, Kay
Connors, and Paula Johnson. To the right are shelves of book bins
filled with leveled books for all students in grades K-6. Thanks to the
cooperation of Nicolet Hardwoods, Dan Lazzeroni, and Ryan Kelley's
Woods Class, all materials and labor for the shelves were donated.

If you are a fan of recreational sports then you
probably were in Laona this past Friday and Saturday, May
11 and 12 for the Third Annual Laona Sport and Recreation
Show. The show offers all of the latest gear for the summer
season. There was a wide variety of items to look at and buy
ranging from handbags and candles to docks, fishing
equipment, ATVs, campers and anything else you could
possibly need.
The show is an event for the whole family. The
children could catch some trout or race on a dirt track for the
Traxxas trucks. This year Pam Britten walked away with her
own trucks to race. Pam McCulloch from Roberts Lake
brought home a nice pair of Danners Boots.

Recently, Cara Shepherd (left) was chosen by the Laona Education
Association as the recipient of the Educator of Excellence Award for
the 2011-2012 school year. Presenting the award is Alice Sturzl
(right), representative of the Nicolet/Oconto Retired Teachers
Association (NORTA). Each year this group recognizes teachers for
their superior performance in the classroom as well as their
v o l u n t e e r s e r v i c e t o t h e s c h o o l a n d c o m m u n i t y.

Good things are happening at FCHS! Julie and
her fundraising team are doing remarkable things for our
shelter animals. In the last few months they have had a
huge bowling tournament, a bake sale, and we are in the
process of selling raffle tickets with 5 cash prizes,
including a GRAND prize of $1000. This raffle will help
reduce the cost of our sky-rocketing vet expenses. Our “
Poppy's Pet Bakery" is doing awesome. We have had
many people come forward and volunteer their time to
bake for us. If you would like to purchase any of our pet
goodies they are available at all our events. We will be at
Laona Sport and Craft show Friday and Saturday May 11th
and 12th selling pulled pork sandwiches, fruit smoothies
and an array of other goodies to help support the FCHS.
Stop by and visit us there.
Our pole building is taking shape and our first
rummage sale will be Memorial Day weekend. Kathy
Olson and her Resale Team are also very busy sorting and
selling wonderful items at our resale shop.
It’s that time of year unfortunately when we seem
to experience a high volume of stray animals coming into
our shelter. Right now we have every dog kennel and cat
cage filled. This past weekend we had a situation involving
a big dog attacking two smaller dogs in a neighboring
township. As always the Forest County Sheriff’s
Department was an extreme help with this situation.
Please keep your dog contained to your yard to ensure the
safety of your neighbors and neighbors pets. The two
small dogs in this case were badly injured, but are
expected to recover from their injuries.
We have started our new volunteering program. If
you haven’t yet signed up to be a volunteer and help our
shelter animals either by cleaning kennels or walking
dogs, please call us at (715) 478-2098.
Donations of scoop-able cat litter, Purina cat and
dog food, Simple Green cleaner and rawhide chews would
be greatly appreciated at this time.
Our summer hours will begin Saturday May 12th.
We will be open Wednesday from 4 to 6, Saturday from 10
to 1 and will open by appointment during the week. Our
new web site is up and running you can find us on the web

Solving the Workforce Paradox
May 31 at Nicolet College
Unemployment is still higher than it should be yet
many manufacturers are looking to hire but can’t find
enough qualified employees.
That situation will be the central focus of the
upcoming Solving the Workforce Paradox session from 1
p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, May 31, at Nicolet College.
The event is free and open to the public.
At the event Jim Morgan, president of the
Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce (WMC)
Foundation, will share his insights from more than 50
listening sessions he’s held with more than 300
manufacturing representatives from across the state.
Morgan will be joined by Nicolet representatives
Ron Skallerud, executive dean of Economic Development,
and Brigitte Parsons, dean of Trade and Industry, in the
discussion and brainstorming session aimed at creating
the skilled workforce manufacturers need.
While the session is free, reservations are
