Vážení a milí hosté,
říká se, že krásné Karlovy Vary svou krásu na podzim ještě umocňují věncem barevně se měnících
okolních lesů. Dobře jste si zvolili - a já Vás v našem vlídném městě i v našem přátelském hotelu vítám. Na pokojích Vás navíc uvítá nový televizní spot s informacemi a některé pokoje ještě letos získají nový, modernější design. Když se interiéry v dosud dvaceti pokojích osvědčí, dojde ke změně ve
vybavení všech dalších pokojů. Všimli jste si, že Grandhotel Pupp je vlastně velká obrazová galerie?
Dnes Vás jí provedeme. V tomto čísle Pupp Journalu najdete také informaci o novém golfovém
apartmá na nedalekém golfovém hřišti. Milovníci golfu se sejdou na turnaji pro partnery Grandhotelu
Pupp 17. září 2011 v příjemném prostředí Golf Resortu Karlovy Vary. Částku ze startovného opět

man sagt, dass das schöne Karlsbad seine Schönheit im Herbst noch mit einem Kranz der bunten umliegenden Wälder
krönt. Sie haben richtig gewählt – und ich heiße Sie in unserer angenehmen Stadt und in unserem freundlichen Hotel
willkommen. In den Zimmern begrüßt Sie dazu ein neuer Fernsehspot mit Informationen und manche Zimmer bekommen
noch dieses Jahr ein neues, moderneres Design. Falls sich die Innenräume in den bisher zwanzig Zimmern bewähren,

The beauty of Karlovy Vary is said to be intensified in autumn by a wreath of surrounding woods which change colours.
You have made a good choice – and I am happy to be able to welcome you both in our pleasant town and our friendly
hotel. In addition to it, you will be welcomed in your rooms by a new television spot with information and some of the
rooms will get new, more modern design before the end of this year. When the interiors of twenty rooms so far prove
successful, furnishings in all other rooms will be changed. Have you noticed that the Grandhotel Pupp is in fact a big
picture gallery? We will show you round it today. You will also find information about a new golf suite on the nearby golf
course. Lovers of golf will meet at a golf tournament for partners of the Grandhotel Pupp in the pleasant atmosphere of
the Golf Resort Karlovy Vary on the 17th September. 2011. The money from starting fees will go to charity project again.
You will learn more in the magazine. We will also give you tips on what is going on in the spa, where to go and what to

Ozvěny Mezinárodního
Vítězka Wimbledonu v Karlových Varech
filmového festivalu
Již po šestačtyřicáté se v červenci v Karlových Varech
konal Mezinárodní filmový
festival. Více jak sto dvacet
tisíc diváků shlédlo téměř
200 filmů. Významným hostitelským i předváděcím místem byl také Grandhotel
Pupp. Velkou cenu Křišťálový
Globus získal izraelský film
Restaurátor / Restoration (re­
žie Joseph Madmony). Nej­
větší hvězdou festivalu byla
nositelka Os­cara Judi Dench,
nejlepší anglická herečka všech dob. V Kar­lových
Varech získala Cenu za mimořádný umělecký přínos
světové kinematografii.
Nachklänge des Internationalen Filmfestivals
Bereits zum sechsundvierzigsten Mal fand im Juli in
Karlsbad das Internationale Filmfestival statt. Mehr als
hun­dertzwanzigtausend Zuschauer sahen fast 200
Filme. Ein bedeutender Gastgeber- sowie Vorführungsort
war auch das Grandhotel Pupp. Den Hauptpreis, den
Kristallenen Globus erhielt der israelische Film
Restoration (Regie Joseph Madmony). Der größte
Festivalstar war die Oscarpreisträgerin Judi Dench, die
beste Schauspielerin Englands aller Zeiten. In Karlsbad
erhielt sie den Preis für den außergewöhnlichen
Beitrag der Weltkinematografie.
Echoes of the International Film Festival
The International Film Festival was held in Karlovy Vary
for the 46th time in July. More than 120 thousand cinema visitors saw almost 200 films. The Grandhotel Pupp,
too, was an important place for festival guests and, at the
same time, one of the places where films were shown.
The main prize, the Crystal Globe, was won by the
Israeli film Restoration (directed by Joseph Madmony).
The biggest star of the festival was the Oscar-holder Judi
Dench, the best English actress of all times. She was
awarded the Crystal Globe for Outstanding Contribution
to World Cinema in Karlovy Vary.

„Je to téměř jako získat Oscara,“ řekla čerstvá vítězka
Wimbledonu Petra Kvitová při uvítacím ceremoniálu
před Grandhotelem Pupp a zvedla nad hlavu vítěznou
trofej z wimbledonské dvouhry žen. Slav­nou tenistku
uvítal primátor města Petr Kulhánek a prezident filmového festivalu Jiří Bartoška. Jako významného hosta
festivalu ji pozvali na slavnostní oběd. Ge­ne­rální ředitelka Grandhotelu Pupp Andrea Pfeffer-Ferklová ocenila
vynikající sportovní výkon Petry Kvitové a dodala: „Byla
mi nejsympatičtější. Je to velmi hezká a příjemná dáma.“
Die Wimbledonsiegerin in Karlsbad
„Es ist fast wie einen Oscar zu gewinnen,“ sagte die frische
Wim­bledonsiegerin Petra Kvitová während der Be­grü­
ßungs­zeremonie vor dem Grandhotel Pupp und sie hob
die Wimbledon-Siegestrophäe im Damen-Einzelspiel über
den Kopf. Die berühmte Tennisspielerin begrüßte der
Ober­bürgermeister der Stadt Petr Kulhánek und der Film­
festi­valpräsident Jiří Bartoška. Als einen bedeutenden
Festivalgast luden sie sie zu einem Festmittagessen ein. Die
Generaldirektorin vom Grandhotel Pupp Andrea PfefferFerklová schätzte die hervorragende sportliche Leistung von
Petra Kvitová und sagte: „Sie war für mich am sympathisch­
sten. Sie ist eine sehr schöne und angenehme Dame.“
A Wimbledon Champion in Karlovy Vary
“It is almost like winning an Oscar,” the Wimbledon winner
Petra Kvitová said during the welcoming ceremony outside
the Grandhotel Pupp and raised the trophy from the
Wimbledon ladies´singles over her head. The famous tennis
player was welcomed by the mayor of the town Petr
Kulhánek and the president of
the film festival Jiří Bartoška.
Being a prominent festival
guest, she was invited to a gala dinner. The general manager of the Grandhotel Pupp
Andrea Pfeffer-Ferklová appreciated Petra Kvitová´s brilliant
sporting performance and added: “I found her the nicest of
all. She is a very beautiful and
nice young lady.”

Karlovarský Rotary Club
obnovuje Beethovenův pomník
Členové Karlovarského klubu se scházejí v Bee­
tho­­venově salonku nad Café Pupp. Na tomto místě stával
dům Boží oko, kde Ludwig van Beethoven v roce 1812 pobýval. V sousedním Českém sále uspořádal dobročinný
koncert ve prospěch lázní Baden u Vídně, které postihl požár. Slavného skladatele připomíná pamětní deska na

numentální pomník u Park­
hotelu Rich­mond z r. 1929
(Hugo Uher). Boční alegorické reliéfy však byly v poválečných emocích roku
1945 z pomníku odstraněny. Kar­lovarští rotariáni právě v souvislosti s beethovenovskou tradicí pořádají
sbírku a organizují obnovu
reliéfních desek.

Der Karlsbader Rotary Club trifft sich zu seinen Ver­
samm­lungen im Beethoven Salon über dem Café Pupp.
An dieser Stelle stand das Haus Auge Gottes, wo Ludwig
van Beethoven im Jahre 1812 wohnte. Im benachbarten
Böhmischen Saal veranstaltete er ein Wohltätigkeits­
konzert zugunsten des Kurortes Baden bei Wein, den
ein Brand befiel. An den berühmten Komponisten erinnert eine Gedenktafel am Grandhotel Pupp und ein
monumentales Denkmal am Parkhotel Richmond aus
dem Jahre 1929 (Hugo Uher). Die allegorischen Reliefe
an der Seite wurden aber in den Nachkriegsemotionen
im Jahre 1945 vom Denkmal beseitigt. Die Karlsbader
Rotarianer veranstalten gerade im Zusammenhang mit
der Beetho­ven Tradition eine Sammlung und organisieren die Er­neue­rung der Reliefplatten.
Eye in this place before where Ludwig van Beethoven stayed in 1812. He organized a charity concert for the spa
Baden near Vienna which had been struck by a fire in the
adjacent Bohemian Hall. The famous composer is remembered with a plaque on the Grandhotel Pupp and a big monument near the Park­hotel Richmond dating from 1929 (Hugo
Uher). How­ever, its side allegorical reliefs were removed in
the turbulent postwar year 1945. In connection with the
Beethovenian tradition, the Rotarians of Karlovy Vary raise
money and organize the renovation of the relief slabs.
Zlatá hokejka
V Grandhotelu Pupp se uskutečnilo 18. června 2011 slavnostní vyhlášení 43. ročníku ankety Zlatá hokejka o nejlepšího hokejistu České republiky 2011. Jaromír Jágr, olympijský vítěz z Nagana a dvojnásobný mistr světa, dostal od
trenérů, odborníků a novinářů nejvíc hlasů, vítězně pozvedl
sošku jásajícího hokejisty a připsal si v této anketě jubilejní
desátý triumf.
Der Goldene Eishockeyschläger
Im Grandhotel Pupp fand am 18. Juni 2011 die feierliche
Verkündung des 43. Jahrganges der Umfrage Der Goldene
Eishockeyschläger um den besten Eis­hockey­spieler der
Tschechischen Republik 2011 statt. Jaromír Jágr, der
Olympiasieger aus Nagano und zweifacher Welt­meister,
bekam von den Trainern, Fachleuten und Jour­nalisten die
meisten Stimmen. Er hob die Statue des jubelnden
Eishockeyspielers stolz über den Kopf und feierte in dieser
Umfrage seinen zehnten Jubiläumstriumph.

Hockey Stick were announced during a gala evening in the
Grandhotel Pupp on the 18th June 2011. Jaromír Jágr, the
Olympic winner from Nagano and the double champion of
the world, got the highest number of votes from coaches,
specialists and journalists. He raised the statuette of a cheering ice-hockey player above his head and added another,
the anniversary tenth triumph to the list of winners in this
survey.
Dostih Grandhotelu Pupp
Dostihy jsou nejen sportovní, ale i společenskou událostí. Zvláště v takovém prostředí, jaké nabízí historické, sto
dvanáct let staré, dostihové závodiště v Karlových
Varech - Dvorech. V letošní dostihové sezóně se v neděli 3. července při příležitosti konání Mezinárodního filmového festivalu závodilo i o Cenu Grandhotelu Pupp.
Zvítězil kůň Apinoa s jezdcem Jiřím Chaloupkou.

Die Pferderennen sind nicht nur ein sportliches, sondern
auch ein gesellschaftliches Ereignis. Besonders im solchen Milieu, das die historische, hundertzwölf Jahre alte,
Pferderennbahn in Karlsbad - Maierhöfen (Dvory) bietet. In der diesjährigen Rennsaison wetteiferte man am
Sonntag den 3. Juli anlässlich des Internationalen Film­
festivals auch um den Grandhotel Pupp Preis. Es gewann das Pferd Apinoa mit dem Jockey Jiří Chaloupka.

V rámci oslav 310 let existence Grandhotelu Pupp jsme pro
naše hosty a také pro významné návštěvníky letošního 46.
ročníku Mezinárodního filmového festivalu Karlovy Vary,
připravili speciální omezenou edici lázeňského pohárku
Viktor. První z celkové řady tří set kusů získal prezident
České republiky pan Václav Klaus, jeho dalšími držiteli jsou
například herečka Judi Dench, či herec pan David Morse.

Im Rahmen der Feierlichkeiten anlässlich des 310. Jubiläums
des Bestehens von Grandhotel Pupp hat man für unsere
Gäste und auch für die bedeutenden Besucher des diesjährigen 46. Internationalen Filmfestivals Karlsbad, eine spezielle limitierte Ausgabe vom Kurtrinkbecher Viktor vorbereitet. Den Ersten von insgesamt dreihundert Stück dieser
Reihe erhielt der Präsident der Tschechischen Republik,
Herr Václav Klaus, seine weiteren Besitzer sind zum
Beispiel die Schauspielerin Judi Dench oder der Schauspieler
David Morse.
Spa Cup Viktor
Horse Races of the Grandhotel Pupp
Horse races are not only a sporting event but also
a social event. Especially in such an atmosphere which
the historic, 112-year-old horse racing course in Karlovy
Vary-Dvory offers. On Sunday the 3rd July there was
a horse race to win the Prize of the Grandhotel Pupp.
The race was held on the occasion of the International
Film Festival and its winner was Apinoa with the jockey
Jiří Chaloupka.

POVÍDÁNÍ S BARMANEM

někdy po půlnoci. Každý den je jiný. Mezinárodní hotel významného jména vyhledávají hosté z celého světa. Stravují se
u nás i hosté z jiných hotelů, požadují tu nejlepší kvalitu.
A co významní hosté?
Ano, obsluhoval jsem skoro všechny - prezidenty, podnikatele, politiky, herce. Když u nás natáčel Gérard Depardieu,
přišel k baru a slušně se zeptal, jestli si může něco namíchat
sám. Vyhověl jsem mu, dal si Margaritu, našel tequilu, přidal likér Cointreau a citrónovou šťávu - šlo mu to skvěle.
Dva dny před skončením natáčení nám přinesl dvě lahve
červeného z vlastní vinice.
Náročnou práci střídá barman s pobytem v Krkonoších.
Toulá se s manželkou po horách, nebo využívá horské kolo.
Cítí se dobře. „Záleží na zdravotním stavu, člověk musí být
optimista a nestresovat se – zkrátka je třeba být v pohodě.“
Vybráno z rozhovoru Luboše Zahradníčka pro Mladou frontu DNES.
„Správný barman musí umět naslouchat a pak hlavně mlčet!“ řekl zcela nepovzbudivě na začátek rozhovoru vedoucí
střediska Malá dvorana Ladislav Hejcman. „Všem musíme
taktně vyhovět, každý potřebuje jiný přístup, musíme se
naladit na struny zákazníků. Je uměním vše pozorně vyslechnout a hlavně nic nekomentovat.“
Cesta Ladislava Hejcmana byla přímočará. Vyučil se
v Grandhotelu Moskva (Pupp), absolvoval Střední hotelovou školu v Mariánských Lázních a nastoupil zpět do karlovarského Grandhotelu. Jako číšník získával ostruhy ve všech
restauracích a kavárnách hotelu. Nyní už je šest let barmanem a vedoucím v Malé dvoraně. Hovoří anglicky, německy
a rusky. Absolvoval řadu barmanských kurzů, vinařských
akademií a pedagogické minimum. Veškeré zkušenosti předává mladým. Reprezentoval v Bulharsku, Polsku, Jugoslávii,
dva roky obsluhoval v berlínské restauraci Morava na náměstí Alexanderplatz.
Měl jste někdy „zaječí úmysly“?
Možnosti i nabídky existovaly, ale vždy jsem si řekl, že „můj“
karlovarský Grandhotel je nejlepší. Fascinuje mě nádherné
prostředí, okolí, zkrátka nechtěl jsem ho opustit, letos tu
sloužím 40. sezónu! Službu začínám v 10 hodin, končím

„Ein richtiger Barkeeper muss zuhören können und dann vor
allem schweigen!“ sagte nicht gerade ermutigend am Anfang
des Gesprächs der Leiter von Malá dvorana Herr Ladislav
Hejcman. „Allen müssen wir taktvoll entgegenkommen, jeder braucht einen anderen Umgang, man muss mit den
Kunden gleich gestimmt sein. Es ist eine Kunst alles aufmerksam anhören und hauptsächlich nicht kommentieren.“
Der Weg von Ladislav Hejcman war direkt. Er machte seine Lehre im Grandhotel Moskva (Pupp), er bestand die
Hotelfachschule in Marienbad und tritt seine Stelle im
Karlsbader Grandhotel zurück an. Als Kellner gewann er
Erfahrungen in allen Restaurants und Cafés des Hotels.
Nun ist er bereits sechs Jahre Barkeeper und Leiter in Malá
dvorana. Er spricht englisch, deutsch und russisch. Er
bestand eine Reihe von Barkeeperkursen, Weinakademien,
das pädagogische Minimum und sämtliche Erfahrungen
vermittelt er an junge Kellner weiter. Er repräsentierte in
Bulgarien, Polen, Jugoslawien, zwei Jahre kellnerte er im
Berliner Restaurant Morava am Alexanderplatz.

Hatten Sie manchmal „Fluchtgedanken“?
Es hat Möglichkeiten sowie Angebote gegeben, aber immer
habe ich mir gesagt, dass „mein“ Karlsbader Grandhotel
das Beste ist. Mich fasziniert das wunderschöne Milieu, die
Umgebung, kurz und gut ich wollte es nicht verlassen, dieses Jahr diene ich hier die 40. Saison! Den Dienst beginne
ich um 10 Uhr und beende nach Mitternacht. Jeder Tag ist
anders. Ein internationales Hotel vom bedeutenden Namen;
suchen Gäste aus der ganzen Welt auf. Es verköstigen sich
bei uns auch Gäste von anderen Hotels, sie verlangen die
beste Qualität.
Und was die berühmten Gäste angeht?
Ja, ich habe fast alle bedient – die Präsidenten, die
Unternehmer, die Politiker, die Schauspieler. Als bei uns
Gérard Depardieu gedreht hat, ist er zur Bar gekommen
und hat anständig gefragt, ob er sich etwas selbst mischen
darf. Ich bin ihm entgegengekommen, er hat sich die
Margarita gemischt, er hat den Tequila gefunden, hinzu hat
er den Likör Cointreau und den Zitronensaft gegeben – sie
ist ihm ausgezeichnet gelungen. Zwei Tage vor dem Ende
der Dreharbeiten hat er uns zwei Flaschen Rotwein vom
eigenen Weinberg gebracht.
Die anstrengende Arbeit wechselt der Barkeeper mit dem
Aufenthalt im Riesengebirge. Er spaziert mit seiner Frau in
den Bergen, oder er fährt Mountainbike. Er fühlt sich gut.
„Es kommt auf den Gesundheitszustand an, man muss
Optimist sein und keinen Stress haben – kurz gesagt, man
muss ok sein.“

TALKING TO THE BARMAN
LADISLAV HEJCMAN
won his spurs as a waiter in all restaurants and cafés of the
hotel. He has been a barman and the head of the Malá dvorana for six years already. He speaks English, German and
Russian. He took a number of different courses including
a course of teaching and shares his experience with the
young today. He represented the Grandhotel Pupp in
Bulgaria, Poland and Yugoslavia and worked in the Morava
Restaurant in Alexanderplatz square in Berlin for two years.
Have you ever thought of leaving?
There were some opportunities and offers but I always said
to myself that “my” Grandhotel was the best. I am fascinated by the beautiful surroundings, I just did not want to
leave it, I have been working here for forty years! I start at
10 a.m. and finish after midnight. Every day is different.
Our international hotel of a renowned name is visited by
guests from all over the world. And guests from other hotels
come to have meals here, they want the best quality.
And how about prominent guests?
Oh yes, I served almost all of them – presidents, businessmen, politicians and actors. When Gérard Depardieu was
shooting a film in our hotel, he came to the bar and asked
politely if he could prepare a drink himself. I met his wish
and he had a Margarita – he found tequila, added a bit of
the Cointreau liqueur and lemon juice – he was very good
at it. He brought us two bottles of red wine from his own
vineyard two days before his departure.
The barman sometimes exchanges his work for a stay in the
Giant Mountains. He goes hiking with his wife or they go
mountain biking. He feels good.

optimist and avoid stress – it is necessary to be O.K.”

”A good barman has to be able to listen and then the main
thing is to keep silence!” the head of the Malá dvorana
centre Ladislav Hejcman said completely discouragingly at
the beginning of our interview. ”We have to accommodate
all discreetly, everyone needs a different attitude, we have
to tune to our customers’ strings. It is not easy to listen to
everything attentively and not to comment it”.
Ladislav Hejcman´s journey through life was straight. He
completed his training in the Grandhotel Moskva (Pupp),
then he studied and finished the Secondary Hotel School in
Mariánské Lázně and returned to the Grandhotel Pupp. He

set obrazů a další jsou uloženy v hotelovém depozitáři. Nejvíce klasických děl můžete spatřit
v Grand Lobby. V Grandrestaurantu najdete dílo
Václava Brožíka s názvem Dostaveníčko. Tento
nejznámější český malíř poslední čtvrtiny 19. století dosáhl obrovského veřejného úspěchu
a vstoupil jako člen Francouzského institutu mezi
„čtyřicet nesmrtelných“, což se žádnému jinému
českému umělci nepodařilo. Za zmínku rozhodně stojí také originální malovaná plátna z konce
19. století v Clubu Malá dvorana. Na impozantním schodišti Slavnostního sálu Vás zaujmou
monumentální nástěnné malby Vřídelní víla
a Objevení Vřídla Wilhelma Schneidera z roku
1901. Karlovarský malíř Wilhelm Schneider
(1864-1935) po studiích na Akademii v Mni­
chově maloval historické, náboženské a žánrové
obrazy a portréty. Některá jeho díla, jako např.
Hostina Blücherova v Poštovním dvoře, byla
poctěna Státní cenou.
Samostatnou kapitolu představují obrazové velkoformátové fotografie v baru Rendez-vous.
Jeden ze současných předních českých fotografů
Tono Stano na nich v průběhu let jedinečným
způsobem zachycuje portréty celebrit, které navštívily Mezinárodní filmový festival.

meisten klassische Werke kann man in der Grand Lobby
sehen. Im Grandrestaurant findet man das Werk von Václav
Brožík mit dem Namen Ständchen. Dieser bekannteste tschechischer Maler des letzten Viertels des 19. Jahr­hunderts
gewann einen riesigen Beifall bei der Öffentlichkeit und trat
als Mitglied des Französischen Instituts unter die „vierzig
Unsterbliche“, was keinem anderen tschechischen Künstler
gelang. Erwähnungswert sind auf jeden Fall auch die originellen Gemälde vom Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts im Club
Malá dvorana. Am imposanten Treppenhaus des Festsaales
fesseln Sie die monumentalen Wandgemälde Die
Sprudelnymphe und die Sprudel­ent­deckung von Wilhelm
Schneider aus dem Jahre 1901. Der Karlsbader Maler
Wilhelm Schneider (1864-1935) malte nach dem Studium
an der Akademie in München historische, religiöse und
Genregemälde und Portraits. Manche seine Werke, wie
z. B. Blüchers Festmahl im Posthof, wurden mit dem
Staatspreis ausgezeichnet.
Ein Kapitel für sich stellen die großformatigen Fotografien
in der Bar Rendezvous. Einer der vordersten derzeitigen
tschechischen Fotografen Tono Stano erfasst auf ihnen im
Laufe der Jahre auf einmaliger Art und Weise die Portraits
der Stars, die das Internationale Filmfestival besuchten.

Art on Walls
The rooms of the Grandhotel Pupp are decorated with
more than five hundred pictures and further pictures are
kept in the hotel depository. The highest number of classical works can be seen in the Grand Lobby. A work by
Václav Brožík whose name is Rendezvous can be found in

the last quarter of the 19th century reached enormous success and, being a member of the French Institute, he entered ”the forty immortal”, something which none of other
Czech artists had managed before. The original paintings on

monumental wall paintings Sprudel Nymph and Discovery
of the Sprudel by Wilhelm Schneider from the year 1901

Otcové Zakladatelé
Koncem 19. století se ve Skotsku objevila řada osobností,
dnes bychom řekli otců zakladatelů, díky kterým se rozvoj
výroby whisky urychlil, a kterým se dodnes říká Whisky
Barons - většina totiž získala šlechtické tituly. Mezi nejznámější patřili John Dewar (1806-80), autor White Label,
a jeho potomci John A. Dewar (1856-1929) a Thomas
R. Dewar (1864-1930), přezdívaný Whisky Tom. Ten byl
znám navíc i tím, že byl třetím majitelem auta v Británii
a v r. 1897 byl šerifem v Londýně. Další osobností byl
James J. Buchanan (1849-1935), tvůrce Black & White,
a Peter Jeffrey Mackie (1855-1924), genius, megaloman
a excentrik v jedné osobě s přezdívkou Neklidný Petr, otec
slavné White Horse. Dalšími významnými osobnostmi jsou
John Walker (1805-1857), jeho syn Alexander a vnuk
Alexander jr. (1869-1950) - tvůrci Johnnie Walker. Také
John Haig (1720-1773) se syny Andrewem (1769-1824),
Jamesem (1755-1833), Williamem (1771-1874) a vnukem
Johnem (1802-1878) a jejich
Haig´s. Za zmínku jistě stojí
ještě Artur Bell (1831-1900)
se synem Arturem Kinmondem

Když v roce 1898 díky megalomanství bratrů Roberta
a Waltera Pattisonových zkrachovala největší firma obchodující s whisky Pattison, Elder & Co. (bankrot cca 250 tisíc
tehdejších liber), byl trh přesycen neprodejnými zásobami.
Paradoxně tento Pattison crash přispěl k rozšíření a známosti whisky, donutil palírny nápoj vyvážet a také ukončil válku
mezi výrobci malt a obilné. Tento bankrot také napomohl
spolu se světovou válkou i tomu, že velká část palíren byla
nucena ve dvacátých letech dvacátého století postupně
přejít pod zastřešující Distillers Company Ltd (DCL). Mimo
palíren do ní vstoupily také blenderské společnost jako
Haig, Buchanan, Dewar, John Walker, William Sanderson
a White Horse Distillers. V r. 1915 byl zřízen vládní úřad
pro kontrolu produkce whisky. Bylo rovněž stanoveno, že
whisky musí zrát v sudech nejméně tři roky. A zcela na
konci vývoje, v r. 1990, byla určena přesná definice skotské
whisky v rámci European Economic Community.
Za pozornost také stojí, jak se měnili a stále mění majitelé
palíren. Z více než stovky palíren jich zůstalo v držení generací stejných rodin či rodinných společností jen několik
málo - Springbank (Mitchell), Glenfiddich, Balvenie
a Kininvie (všechny W. Grant). V řadě ostatních palíren se
vystřídalo deset i více majitelů. Zajímavé je, že i tento fakt
měl dopad na vývoj značné části palíren. Začali je totiž
skupovat po druhé světové válce ti, kteří whisky jen míchali (blendeři), a řada palíren proto v zájmu udržení své nezávislosti započala v šedesátých letech dvacátého století dávat
na trh v široké míře produkty, ke kterým blendery nepotřebovala - jednodruhové whisky, single malt.

Die Gründerväter
Am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts erschien in Schottland eine
Reihe von Persönlichkeiten, heute würde man sagen
Gründerväter, dank denen sich die Entwicklung der
Whiskyherstellung beschleunigte, und die man bis heute
Whisky Barons nennt – die meisten erhielten nämlich einen
Adelstitel. Zu den bekanntesten gehörten John Dewar
(1806-1880), der Autor vom White Label, und seine
Nachkommen John A. Dewar (1856-1929) und Thomas

Dieser war hinzu auch dadurch bekannt, dass er der dritte
Autoeigentümer in Britannien war und im Jahre 1897 war
er Scheriff in London. Eine weitere Persönlichkeit war
James J. Buchanan (1849-1935), der Urheber vom Black &
White und Peter Jeffrey Mackie (1855-1924), ein Genie,
Megalomane und Exzentriker in einer Person mit dem
Spitznamen Unruhiger Peter, der Vater des berühmten
White Horse. Weitere bedeutende Persönlichkeiten sind
John Walker (1805-1857), sein Sohn Alexander und
Enkelsohn Alexander Jr. (1869-1950) – die Urheber vom
Johnnie Walker. Auch John Haig (1720-1773) mit den
Söhnen Andrew (1769-1824), James (1755-1833), William
(1771-1874) und dem Enkelsohn John (1802-1878) und ihr
Haig´s. Nennenswert ist sicher noch Artur Bell (18311900) mit Sohn Artur Kinmond und ihr Whisky Bell´s,
weiter Long John Macdonald mit dem Whisky Long John,
William Teacher (1811-1876) mit dem Teacher´s und
Andrew Usher, Vater vom Malz mischen mit seinem
Usher´s Old Vatted Glenlivet. Man darf auch nicht den
Architekten Charles Chree Doig vergessen, der sich in die
Geschichte damit einschrieb, dass er eine Reihe der klassischen Brennereien plante – z. B. Dailuaine, Ardbeg, Aberfeld,
Imperial, Craigellachie, Caol Ila, Dalwhinnie, Highland
Park, Coleburn, Laphroaig, Tamdhu und weitere, insgesamt entwarf er 56 Brennereien und er war Autor der charakteristischen Brennerei Pagode.
Als im Jahre 1898 dank Megalomanie der Gebrüder Robert
und Walter Pattison die größte Firma, die mit dem Whisky
Pattison, Elder & Co. handelte, Pleite machte (Bankrott ca.
250 Tausend damaliger Pfund), war der Markt mit unverkäuflichen Vorräten übersättigt. Paradox trug dieser Pattison
crash zur Verbreitung und Bekanntschaft vom Whisky bei, er
zwang die Brennereien das Getränk zu exportieren und
beendete auch den Krieg zwischen den Erzeugern von Malz
und Korn. Dieser Bankrott führte zusammen mit dem
Weltkrieg auch dazu, dass ein großer Teil der Brennereien in
den zwanziger Jahren des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts gezwungen war, nach und nach zu der Distillers Company Ltd
(DCL) überzugehen. Außer den Brennereien traten ihr auch
Blendergesellschaften bei wie Haig, Buchanan, Dewar, John
Walker, William Sanderson und White Horse Distillers bei.
Im Jahre 1915 wurde die Regierungsbehörde für die
Kontrolle der Whiskyherstellung errichtet. Es wurde ebenso
festgelegt, dass Whisky in den Fässern mindestens drei Jahre
reifen muss. Und ganz am Ende der Entwicklung, im Jahre
1990, wurde die genaue Definition des schottischen Whiskys
im Rahmen der European Economic Community bestimmt.

Ebenfalls interessant ist, wie die Brennereibesitzer wechselten und stets wechseln. Von mehr als hundert Brennereien
blieben im Besitz einer Familie oder einer Familiengesellschaft
nur wenige - Springbank (Mitchell), Glenfiddich, Balvenie
und Kininvie (alle W. Grant). In zahlreichen Brennereien
wechselten zehn oder mehr Besitzer. Interessant ist, dass
auch diese Tatsache Auswirkung auf die Entwicklung von
zahlreichen Brennereien hatte. Es begannen sie nämlich
nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg diejenigen aufzukaufen, die
Whisky nur mischten (die Blender), und zahlreiche
Brennereien begannen deshalb, um ihre Unabhängigkeit zu
erhalten, in den sechziger Jahren des zwanzigsten
Jahrhunderts auf den Markt in einer großen Menge
Produkte zu bringen, zu denen sie die Blender nicht brauchten – die Single malt Whiskys.

Founding Fathers
The number of personalities that appeared in Scotland in
the late 19th century would be called founding fathers today. The production of whisky got faster owing to them
and they have been called Whisky Barons until these days
because most of them received a hereditary title. One of the
best known of them was John Dewar (1806-80), the creator of the White Label, and his descendants John A. Dewar
(1856- 1929) and Thomas R. Dewar (1864–1930), who
was nicknamed Whisky Tom. Thomas R. Dewar was also
known for being the third owner of a car in Britain and for
being a sheriff in London in 1897. Another personality was
James J. Buchanan (1849–1935), the creator of Black
& White, and Peter Jeffrey Mackie (1855– 1924), a genius,
megalomaniac and an eccentric person in one who was
nicknamed Restless Peter, the father of the famous label
White Horse. Further important personalities are John
Walker (1805–1857), his son Alexander and his grandson
Alexander Jr., the creators of Johnnie Walker, and also John
Haig (1720–1773) and his sons Andrew (1769–1824),
James (1755–1833), William (1771–1874) and his grandson John (1802–1878) who produced Haig´s. Then there
are Arthur Bell (1831-1900) and his son Arthur Kinmond
and their whisky Bell’s, further Long John Macdonald with
his whisky Long John, William Teacher (1811-1876) with
Teacher’s and Andrew Usher, the father of malt mixing, and
his Usher’s Old Vatted Glenlivet. We must not forget the
architect Charles Chree Doig who entered history after he
had designed several distilleries, such as Dailuaine, Ardbeg,
Aberfeldy, Imperial, Craigellachie, Caol Ila, Dalwhinnie,
Highland Park, Coleburn, Laphroaig, Tamhdu and others.
He designed altogether 56 distilleries and invented their
typical distillery pagodas.
When the biggest company dealing in whisky Pattison,
Elder & Co. went bankrupt owing to megalomania of the
brothers Robert and Walter Pattison (they lost approximately 250 thousand pounds), there was a glut of unsellable
whisky on the market. It was paradoxically this Pattison
crash that contributed to the extension and fame of whisky
- it made distilleries to export the beverage and finished the
war between the producers of malt and grain whisky. This
bankrupt together with the world war also made a big part
of distilleries join the umbrella Distillers Company Ltd
(DCL) in the 1920s. Apart from distilleries, blender manufacturing companies like Haig, Buchanan, Dewar, John

Walker, William Sanderson and White Horse Distillers entered it. In 1915 the government office for the control of
whisky production was established. It was also decided that
whisky had to ripe in barrels for at least three years. The
exact definition of Scotch whisky which is applied in the
whole European Economic Community was created at the
very end of this process of development, in 1990.
The way the owners of distilleries have changed is worth
attention as well. Only few of them are still possessed by the
same families or family groups – Springbank (Mitchell),
Glenfiddich, Balvenie and Kininvie (all W. Grant). A number of other distilleries have had ten or even more owners.
It is also interesting that this fact, too, had effects on the
development of a big part of distilleries. After World War II,
they started being bought by those who only blended whisky (blenders). Wanting to keep their independence, lots of
distilleries began to deliver such products to the market for
which blenders were not needed – single malt whiskies.

Golfové setkání
6. ročník golfového turnaje Grandhotelu Pupp se uskuteční v sobotu 17. září 2011 v příjemném areálu Golf Resort Karlovy Vary
v Olšových Vratech. Je připraven i bohatý program pro negolfisty,
včetně oblíbené golfové akademie s profesionálním trenérem, patovací soutěže, thajských masáží Tawan či využití Pupp Relax
Centra. Novinkou letošního golfového setkání je páteční Black &
White Party v Becher´s Baru ve spolupráci s časopisem Travel
Fever. Částka ze startovného, případně pobytu hostů v Grandhotelu
Pupp, bude věnována na charitativní projekty: nadaci AHR ČR
Start do života, která umožňuje vzdělávání svěřenců dětských
domovů pro profesní kariéru v oboru cestovního ruchu a společnosti Pink Ribbon Golf, která prostřednictvím golfu pomáhá získávat
finanční prostředky pro nadace věnující se boji s rakovinou prsu.

charity projects: the foundation AHR ČR A Start to Life, which

Das Golftreffen
Der 6. Jahrgang des Grandhotel Pupp Golfturniers findet am
Samstag den 17. September 2011 im angenehmen Gelände vom
Golf Resort Karlsbad in Olšová Vrata (Espentor) statt. Es ist auch
ein reiches Programm für Nichtgolfspieler vorbereitet, einschließlich der beliebten Golfakademie mit einem professionellen
Trainer. Weiter der Patwettbewerb, die Thai-Massagen Tawan

Velká dáma světového divadla a filmu, britská herečka Judi
Dench, převzala na Mezinárodním filmovém festivalu
v Karlových Varech Křišťálový glóbus za mimořádný umělecký přínos světové kinematografii. Uvedla zde také film
Jana Eyrová. Judi Dench se narodila v roce 1934. Otec byl
lékařem Královského divadla, díky němu poznala vůni
šminek. Chtěla být kostýmní výtvarnicí, nakonec vystudovala herectví na Central School of Speech and Drama. Na
divadelní prkna vstoupila poprvé jako Ofélie v Hamletovi
v roce 1957, ve filmu debutovala v roce 1964. Její herecký
rejstřík je nebývale široký: hrála v mnoha Shakespearových
hrách, získala Oscara za roli královny Alžběty I. ve filmu
Zamilovaný Shakespeare, za dalších pět rolí byla na Oscara
nominována. Viděli jsme ji ve filmu Piráti z Karibiku, je
vznešenou lady ve filmu Pýcha a předsudek a jako M velí
agentovi 007 Jamesu Bondovi. Mezi její nejslavnější role
patří královna Viktorie ve filmu paní Brownová. Judi Dench
je trojnásobnou laureátkou Ceny Laurence Oliviera a nositelkou titulu Dame of British Empire, který jí udělila královna. Byla třicet let vdaná za herce Michaela Williamse, který
v roce 2001 zemřel. Dcera Finta je také herečka, vnuk
Samuel je roztomilý rošťák. Mladým adeptům herectví radí:
„Musíte pořád tvrdě pracovat, nikdy nesmíte zaparkovat
auto do garáže, jinak už nikdy nevyjedete.“

Ophelia im Hamlet im Jahre 1957, ihr Filmdebüt hatte sie
im Jahre 1964. Ihre Schauspielerkunst ist außergewöhnlich:
sie spielte in vielen Shakespeares Stücken, sie erhielt einen
Oscar für die Rolle der Königin Elisabeth I. im Film
Shakespeare in Love, für weitere fünf Rollen wurde sie für
den Oscar nominiert. Wir sahen sie im Film Pirates of the
Caribbean – Fremde Gezeiten, sie ist die vornehme Lady im
Film Stolz und Vorurteil und als M befiehlt sie dem Agenten
007 James Bond. Zu ihren berühmtesten Rollen gehört die
Königin Viktoria im Film Ihre Majestät Mrs. Brown. Judi
Dench ist dreifache Laureatin des Laurence Olivier Preises
und Trägerin des Titels Dame of British Empire, den Ihr die
Königin erteilte. Sie war dreißig Jahre mit dem Schauspieler
Michael Williams verheiratet, der im Jahre 2001 verstorben
ist. Die Tochter Finta ist ebenfalls Schauspielerin, der
Enkelsohn Samuel ist ein putziger Spitzbube. Den jungen
Schauspieleranwärtern rät sie: „Sie müssen stets hart arbeiten, sie dürfen niemals das Auto in die Garage parken, sonst
fahren sie niemals mehr heraus.“

Die weltberühmte große Dame des Theaters und des
Filmes, die britische Schauspielerin Judi Dench, übernahm
am Internationalen Filmfestival in Karlsbad den kristallenen
Globus für den außergewöhnlichen künstlerischen Beitrag
der Weltkinematografie. Sie leitete hier auch den Film Jane
Eyre ein. Judi Dench wurde im Jahre 1934 geboren. Ihr

learnt to know the smell of make-up. She wanted to be
a costume designer but finally she studied acting at the
Central School of Speech and Drama. She entered the
stage for the first time as Ophelia in Hamlet in 1957 and
then she made her debut in film in 1964. The range of her
roles is unusually wide – she played in lots of Shakespeare’s
plays, was awarded an Oscar for the part of Queen
Elizabeth I in the film Shakespeare in Love and she was
nominated for five more Oscars for further five roles. We
also saw her in the film Pirates of the Caribbean, she was
a noble lady in Pride and Prejudice and she gives orders to
Agent 007 James Bond where she plays M. One of her
most popular roles is that of Queen Victoria in the film
Mrs. Brown. Judi Dench is a triple Lawrence Olivier Prize
laureate and a holder of the title Dame of the British
Empire which was conferred on her by the queen. She was
married to the actor Michael Williams for thirty years, until
his death in 2001. Her daughter Finty is an actress too and
her grandson Samuel is a lovely little rascal. Her advice for
future actors is: ”You must keep on working hard, you must
not ever park the car in the garage otherwise you will never leave it.”

kolonáda
K malebným, tudíž nejfotografovanějším objektům města
patří Tržní kolonáda zdobená vyřezávanými krajkovými
motivy a čelní sloupovou arkádou. Projekt Tržní kolonády
pochází z ateliéru vídeňských architektů Fellnera a Helmera.
Výstavba původní kolonády v roce 1883 trvala jeden rok.
Byla stavěna jako provizorium na pět let, vydržela však více
jak století a následná rekonstrukce, trvající téměř čtyři roky
(1989-1993), ji uchovala dodnes. Svůj název dostala kolonáda podle skutečného tržiště, které zde bývalo ve středověku a tvořilo centrum města. Dřevěná stavba byla postavena,
aby chránila promenádu u dvou pramenů - Tržního a pramene Karla IV. Dnes zde ještě najdete vyústění Dolního
zámeckého pramene, jehož hlavní pramenní váza se nachází v soukromých Zámeckých lázních za kolonádou. Nad
pramenem Karla IV. si prohlédněte kovový reliéf zobrazující
pověst o objevení léčivých pramenů Karlem IV. a jeho
družinou při lovu na jelena. Autorem díla z roku 1930 je
umělecký kovář Adolf Zörkler z Bečova nad Teplou.

Nad Tržní kolonádou se vypíná Zámecká věž, která byla
původně součástí loveckého zámečku Karla IV. Po požáru
v roce 1604 zbyla z královského letohrádku právě jen věž,
která však byla v 18. století přestavěna do dnešní barokní
podoby. V brzké době bude v Tržní kolonádě otevřeno
městské informační centrum.

DIE MARKTKOLONNADE
Zu den malerischen, somit zu den meist fotografierten
Gebäuden der Stadt gehört die Marktkolonnade, verziert
mit geschnitzten Spitzenmotiven und einer Säulenarkade in
der Front. Das Projekt der Marktkolonnade stammt aus
dem Atelier der Wiener Architekten Fellner und Helmer.
Der Aufbau der ursprünglichen Kolonnade im Jahre 1883
dauerte ein Jahr. Sie wurde als Provisorium für fünf Jahre
aufgebaut, sie hielt aber mehr als ein Jahrhundert aus und

die folgende Rekonstruktion, die fast vier Jahre dauerte
(1989 - 1993), erhielt sie bis heute. Ihre Benennung bekam
die Kolonnade nach dem wirklichen Markt, der hier im
Mittelalter war, und bildete das Stadtzentrum. Der hölzerne
Bau wurde gebaut, um die Promenade bei den zwei
Quellen – der Marktquelle und der Karl IV. Quelle zu stützen. Heute findet man hier noch die Mündung der Unteren
Schlossquelle, deren Hauptquellvase sich im privaten
Schlossbad hinter der Kolonnade befindet. Über der Quelle
Karl IV. sieht man ein Metallrelief, das die Sage über die
Entdeckung der Heilquellen von Karl IV. und seinem
Gefolge während einer Hirschjagd darstellt. Der Autor dieses Werkes aus dem Jahre 1930 ist der Kunstschmied Adolf
Zörkler aus Bečov nad Teplou (Petschau).
Über der Marktkolonnade ragt der Schlossturm, der ursprünglich ein Teil des Jagdschlosses von Karl IV. war. Nach dem
Brande im Jahre 1604 blieb aus dem königlichen Lustschloss
gerade nur der Turm übrig, der jedoch im 18. Jahrhundert in
die heutige Barockform umgebaut wurde. Demnächst wird
in der Marktkolonnade ein Infozentrum eröffnet.

THE MARKET COLONNADE
The Market Colonnade decorated with carved ornaments
resembling lace and with a front pillared arcade ranks as

one of the most picturesque and most frequently photographed buildings in Karlovy Vary. The design for the colonnade was made in the Viennese studio of the architects
Fellner and Helmer. The construction of the original colonnade in 1883 lasted just one year. It had been designed as
a provisional building for only five years, however, it survived more than a century. The following renovation took
four years (1989-1993) and preserved it until these days.
The colonnade got its name after a real market place which
used to be here in the Middle Ages and which used to represent the centre of the town. The wooden building was
built to protect the promenade at two springs – the Market
Spring and the Charles IV Spring. Today you will find here
the Lower Castle Spring, too, whose main spring vase is in
the private Castle Spa building behind the colonnade. Have
a look at the metal relief over the Charles IV Spring. It depicts the legend about the discovery of the healing springs
by Charles IV and his company during a deer hunt. The
relief was made by Adolf Zörkler, an art metalworker from
Bečov nad Teplou, in 1930.
The Castle Tower above the Castle Colonnade was originally a part of Charles IV´s hunting lodge. It was just this
tower that was left of the royal summerhouse after the fire
in 1604. It was rebuilt in the Baroque style in the 18th
century. Soon the Town Information Centre will be opened
in the Market Colonnade.

Od Grandhotelu Pupp vyjdeme proti proudu řeky Teplé ke
Galerii umění, mineme pomník Friedrich Schillera, pohlédneme na sochu českého hudebního skladatele Bedřicha
Smetany nedaleko v louce, ale pokračujeme spodní širokou
cestou téměř až k restauraci Poštovní dvůr. Původně skutečně poštovní dvorec se stájemi se počátkem 19. století změnil
v noblesní centrum společenského života. Zde poprvé na
evropském kontinentě zazněla 20.7. 1894 Dvořákova symfonie e moll Z Nového světa. Od Poštovního dvora se vydáme vpravo k branám obnoveného Letního kina, za nímž
na konci aleje uvidíme obelisk knížete Karla Schwarzenberga,
vítěze nad Napoleonem v bitvě u Lipska v r. 1813. Od
pomníku, který byl odhalen v r. 1818 u příležitosti návštěvy knížete v lázeňském městě, pokračujeme doprava do
kopce a Labického pěšinou (značka č. 7) dojdeme ke
Kameni básníků, kde navážeme na turistickou trasu značenou žlutě. Po ní se vystoupáme serpentinami na vrch
Kladivec (Hammerberg) k vyhlídce Karla IV. postavené
v novogotickém stylu v r. 1877. Odsud pokračujeme dále
po žluté značce k romantickému rozcestí s Chopinovou
chatou a kamennou Aranyovou lavicí, která připomíná pobyt známého maďarského básníka. Malebnost místa umocňuje půvabná kaplička Ecce Homo. Za ní se vydáme vpravo, po trase značené č. 7, navážeme na turistickou trasu
značenou modře a po ní sejdeme k neogotické Mariánské
kapli za Grandhotelem Pupp. Doba vycházky cca 90 min.
Pokud máte rádi nordic walking, nebo si ho chcete vyzkoušet, hole vám ochotně zapůjčí v Guest Servisu, případně
vám dle přání zajistí instruktora.

In die bunten Kurwälder
Vom Grandhotel Pupp geht man stromaufwärts des Flusses
Tepl zur Kunstgalerie, man geht an dem Friedrich Schiller
Denkmal vorbei, man besichtigt die Statue des tschechi­
schen Komponisten Bedřich Smetana, die unweit in der
Wiese steht, jedoch man geht weiter den unteren breiten
Weg fast zum Restaurant Posthof (Poštovní dvůr).
Ursprünglich wirklich ein Posthof mit Stall, der sich am
Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts in ein nobles Zentrum des
Gesellschaftslebens verwandelte. Hier erklang zum ersten
Mal am europäischen Kontinent am 20. 7. 1894 Dvořáks

gibt man sich rechts zu den Toren des wiedereröffneten
Freilichtkinos, hinter dem man am Ende der Allee den
Obelisk des Fürsten Karl Schwarzenberg sieht, dem Sieger
über Napoleon in der Schlacht bei Leipzig im Jahre 1813.
Vom Denkmal, das im Jahre 1818 anlässlich des Besuches
des Fürsten in der Kurstadt enthüllt wurde, geht man weiter
rechts bergaufwärts und den Labicky Steig (Marke Nummer
7) kommt man zum Dichterstein, wo man auf die gelbe
Wandererstrecke stößt. Diese steigt man die Serpentinen
auf den Hügel Kladivec (Hammerberg) hoch zur Aussicht
Karl IV. die im neugotischen Stil im Jahre 1877 gebaut
wurde. Von hier aus geht man weiter entlang der gelben
Markierung zum romantischen Scheideweg mit der Chopin
Hütte und der steinernen Arany Bank, die an den Aufenthalt
des bekannten ungarischen Dichters erinnert. Die Poetik
des Ortes bekräftigt die zauberhafte Kapelle Ecce Homo.
Hinter ihr begibt man sich rechts, auf der markierten
Strecke Nr. 7, man kommt auf die blau markierte
Wandererstrecke und diese geht man zur neugotischen
Maria Kapelle hinter dem Grandhotel Pupp hinunter. Für
diesen Spaziergang braucht man ca. 90 Minuten.
Falls Sie Nordic Walking gern haben, oder Sie möchten es
ausprobieren, die Stöcke leiht man Ihnen gern im Guest
Service, eventuell sichert man Ihnen nach Wunsch einen
Instruktor.
1877. Follow the yellow marks from here and go as far as
the romantic crossroads with the Chopin Summerhouse
and the stone Arany Bench which was built here to commemorate the stay of the famous Hungarian poet. The picturesqueness of the place is intensified by the beautiful Ecce
Homo Chapel. Go to the right behind it, take route
No. 7 first and then the one marked blue and go down to
the neo-gothic Virgin Mary Chapel behind the Grandhotel
Pupp. The walk takes about 90 minutes.

To the Spa Woods Full of Colours
Start at the Grandhotel Pupp and go up the River Teplá to
the Art Gallery, pass the Monument to Friedrich Schiller
and the statue of the Czech composer Bedřich Smetana on
a nearby meadow and go on along the lower wide road as
far as the restaurant Poštovní dvůr. It was a real post court
with stables in the past, however, it was changed into a stylish centre of social life in the early 19th century. Here, for
the first time on the Continent, the New World Symphony
in e minor by Antonín Dvořák was played on the 20th July
1894. Go to the right, to the renovated Open-Air Cinema
from the Post Court. Behind it, at the end of an alley, you
can see the Count Karl Schwarzenberg Obelisk. (Karl
Schwarzenberg defeated Napoleon at the Battle of Leipzig
in 1813). The obelisk was unveiled on the occasion of
Count’s visit to the spa town in 1818. Continue to the right,
go up the hill and take the Labický Path ( No.7) which
leads to the Poets´Stone, then take the path with yellow
marks. The winding path runs to the top of the hill Kladivec
and to Charles IV Belvedere built in the neo-gothic style in

century or rare bacteria and algae.

Der Besitzer der berühmten Likörfabrik Johann Gustav
Becher ließ sich im Jahre 1914 unweit von der orthodoxen
Kirche eine prunkvolle Villa im Art déco Stil bauen. Nach
jahrelangem Verfall wurde das Gebäude renoviert und darin eine Kunstgalerie errichtet. Das Galeriecafé stattete mit
feinem Porzellan das Grandhotel Pupp aus.
The owner of the famous factory producing the liqueur
Becherovka Johann Gustav Becher had a luxury villa in the
style art deco near the Russian Church in 1914. The
building was renovated after long years of decaying and
changed into an art gallery. Brittle china in the café of the
gallery was provided by the Grandhotel Pupp.
