NEW for 2009 is the DeepRunner™. The Aglia® and
Little Wolf™ feature two NEW colors, and there are

DeepRunner™
Mepps DeepRunner (page 3) is a willow
leaf spinner designed for fishermen who
need a lure that drops deep quickly and
stays deep throughout the retrieve. All
Mepps DeepRunner’s feature a heavy
over-sized, torpedo-shaped, solid brass
body that allows the angler to cover
more water through additional casting
distance. The narrow willow leaf blade,
torpedo-shaped body combination
makes the DeepRunner ideal for fishing
deep lakes or the fast-moving rivers. Genuine silver plating with a
meticulously-applied, tarnish-resistant, epoxy clear-coat finish. Every
DeepRunner blade features a holographic eye and oven-baked vinyl or
acrylic accent color to create distinct areas of contrast that attract fish as
the blade spins. (more on page 3)
The cover photograph on this, the 2009 Mepps Fishing
Guide is gorgeous. It makes me daydream about being a part
of the photograph myself.
The photo was taken by Jim Martinsen who has worked
here at Mepps for 23 years. The fisherman in the scene is
Mike Keen, who has also worked at Mepps for some years.
Jim works on projects somewhat removed from fishing
including catalog development, web site enhancement and
product photography. Although Jim's work is somewhat
detached from fishing, he’s still an avid fisherman.
Mike does a lot of work on product development and
production processes. Mike, too, is a die-hard fisherman. Mike
and Jim must get out and fish, both locally and remotely, so
they can understand the language, thoughts and needs of all
fishermen.
At Mepps, we are all fishermen and we do our best to fish
a wide variety of regions and species. Due to our obsession
with fishing, we sometimes make small changes to products
based on our fishing experiences, field testing and other
fishermen's recommendations. For example, the Mepps Aglia
on the cover is a new color. The Aglia has been catching fish
for 70 years so it hardly needs a design change, but, a new
color that creates good visibility through contrast will result
in more productive fishing.
On the other hand, we designed the willow leaf
DeepRunner, the other lure on the cover, to do something
different than the Aglia. It was specifically designed to run
deeper and cast farther. In fact, the #1 DeepRunner is about
90% heavier than a #1 Mepps Aglia Long, Mepps other
willow leaf spinner. The #2 DeepRunner is approximately
100% heavier than a #2 Aglia Long. This extra weight has
definitely allowed me to reach spots I couldn’t with a lighter
lure, and it gets my spinner into a fish catching zone quicker
than a lighter similar lure.
At Mepps, we spend a lot of time doing our own research,
testing, development, manufacturing, and quality control. . .
all to help you catch more fish.

Mepps DeepRunner is a willow leaf spinner
designed for fishermen who need a lure that
drops deep quickly and stays deep throughout
the retrieve. Available in two sizes, 5/16 oz.
and 1/2 oz., all Mepps DeepRunners feature a
heavy over-sized, torpedo-shaped, solid brass
body that allows the angler to cover more
water through additional casting distance.
The narrow willow leaf blade, torpedo-shaped
body combination makes the DeepRunner
ideal for fishing deep lakes or fast-moving
rivers.
In addition, the DeepRunner, like all
Mepps spinners, features a strong and
durable, imperfection-free, Swedish Sandvic
stainless steel shaft. Sandvic stainless steel is
of the highest quality and will not break, rust
or corrode even after repeatedly landing fish.
The DeepRunner's precisely machined, solid
brass components are perfectly balanced to
maintain maximum stability at all retrieval
speeds.
Genuine silver plating with a meticulouslyapplied, tarnish-resistant, epoxy clear-coat
finish means every DeepRunner produces
one bright flash after another. The flash
produced by nickel or chrome is not nearly
as bright as genuine silver. A water-activated,
self-lubricating folded solid brass clevis allows
the blade to begin spinning freely as soon as
the lure hits the water. The folded clevis not
only out-performs a stirrup clevis, it is much
stronger and far more durable.
Every DeepRunner blade features a
holographic eye and oven-baked vinyl or
acrylic accent color to create distinct areas of
contrast that attract fish as the blade spins.
Extra-strong, razor-sharp, perfectly-honed
premium quality hooks achieve the highest
hooking percentage possible. Using a bigger
and stronger hook also significantly increases
the anglers ability to keep a big fish on all
the way to the boat. Dressed DeepRunners
feature a genuine Mepps hand-tied, premiumgrade bucktail dressed treble hook secured
by the strongest of waterproof epoxies for
outstanding durability even after repeated
use. A Flashabou accent provides just enough

fish as Mepps® Aglia®. Its classic French
blade provides continuous flash and
vibration. Sizes #0 and #1 are excellent
for trout, panfish and grayling. Sizes #2,
#3 and #4 are outstanding for large
crappies, all bass species, salmon, large

Northern pike, musky, largemouth bass,

movement of a hand-tied marabou tail.
We use the finest and softest marabou

Aglia® Long
Plain Treble
The Mepps® Aglia® Long is a deep running
willow leaf spinner. Its blade “hugs” the
body during the retrieve, allowing it to
stay in deep pockets where big fish hang
out. The Aglia® Long is perfect for fishing
pools below lake outlets or man-made
dams. All Aglia® Longs feature Mepps
Color Technology for maximum visibility.
They also feature solid brass bodies and

The Black Fury® is one of the great alltime Mepps spinners for catching trophy
fish. The special Black Fury blade spins
closer to the body than the classic Aglia®
blade so it easily fishes shallow to middepths. The Black Fury is an excellent
low light (early morning, evening or
overcast) spinner as well as a perfect
choice for sunny days when contrast
with the brightness of the water, weeds
and structure is needed. The Black Fury is
deadly for trophy bass, walleye, panfish
and trout. Big northern pike, musky and
largemouth bass are quick to attack a
#5 Black Fury. Dressed version features
either natural bucktail or squirrel tail.

The Comet® Mino is one of Mepps® most
popular lures. It will catch just about
any fish that swims. All Comet® Minos
feature an interchangeable hook that
makes it simple to attach a replacement
Mino (see diagram below). In addition, all
Comet® Minos are carefully airbrushed to
ensure realism. Their erratic swimming
action makes them appear to be a
wounded bait fish. Mepps® Comet®
Minos are perfect for casting or trolling.
Gold blades are polished brass. Silver
blades are electro plated with genuine
silver. Painted blades are coated with
a proprietary blend of computer-age
vinyl and acrylic finishes. Like all Mepps®

Mepps® Marabous will catch a wide
variety of gamefish. A wide Colorado
blade brings this spinner closer to the
surface during the retrieve. It is ideal for
fishing over weeds or those times when
the lure should just break the surface
as its blade spins. All Mepps Marabous,
have the “magic” action of a top quality,
brightly colored marabou tail for high
visibility and lifelike movement in the
water, making it perfect for both trophy
northern pike and musky. Because it can
be fished near the surface, it will fish
water missed by many other lures. The
real advantage to the Mepps Marabou,

top quality, heavy-duty #7 Colorado blade
and a rugged easy-spin clevis. Solid brass
components mean every Musky Marabou is
perfectly balanced and extremely durable.
Other features include a heavy-duty split ring
for easy marabou tail change. The split ring
also eliminates the leverage a big fish can
exert on straight-wire musky lures. All tails are
hand-tied with the highest grade of marabou
feathers for outstanding durability and lifelike
movement. Mepps time-tested tandem hook
assembly incorporates heavy-duty extra-sharp
treble hooks. The Musky Marabou, with its easyspin low-drag blade, can easily be cast all day
long. In addition, its drag-resistant high-flow
marabou tail gives the Mepps Musky Marabou
more lift and lifelike movement. Retrieve it at a
medium to high speed, bulged just under the

A Nice Mepps Musky Tale
This is the story of Bill Spinnler and his son Alex.
It seems they had spent two days trying to catch
a musky, but, the fish of 10,000 casts had eluded
them. Then, Bill remembered, when he was a kid
about Alex's age, he read that Mepps always did
extensive research on the fish attracting features
of their lures. So, he figured, Mepps knows what
triggers fish to bite. He tied on a Mepps Giant
Killer Sassy Shad. “I figured I couldn't go wrong,” he
wrote. Bill had never caught a musky. Ten minutes
later he boated a 42” trophy. The fish was almost as
big as Alex. If they hadn't tied on that Giant Killer
Sassy Shad, aside from a few follows, Bill and Alex
would have had nothing to show for the day.

1) Catch a fish with a Mepps lure that meets the minimum size requirements
listed below.
2) Either go to www.mepps.com/masterangler or fill out the Angler Award
application attached to the order blank in the center of this Guide.
You do not have to make a purchase to enter your catch. Your first qualifying
entry will earn a colorful embroidered Trophy Fish Award patch, and a chevron
identifying the species of fish you caught. After that you will receive an
embroidered chevron for each fish. You may enter as many different species of
fish as you want, or continue entering the same species, just as long as each
entry is larger than your previous entry of the same species.
3) Once you've entered four different qualifying species of fish, a grand slam,
you'll become a Mepps Master Angler.
4) After you've caught ten different qualifying species of fish, you'll be
awarded a Mepps Expert Fisherman patch, identifying you as one of the best
fishermen in the country.

Why does Mepps only buy and use squirrel tails?
Why not other tails? The fact is squirrel tails are all
hair. . . no fur. Practically all other animals have fur
tails with just a few guard hairs. Fur doesn’t work
on our spinners as - in the water - it doesn’t have
the rippling, pulsating movement of squirrel hair.
Squirrels are also plentiful. According to government figures more than 30 million squirrels are harvested by hunters each year.
Because squirrels are prolific, raising two to four, sometimes more young a year,
hunting hardly reduces their numbers. Squirrel is also some of the best wild meat
and hunting them in their natural habitat is a challenge for the small game hunter.
Squirrel skins are used for caps, fur coats, glove linings and many other items.
However, the tail is usually thrown away. This is a waste of a resource. If you hunt
squirrels, we’re asking you not to waste this resource.

Care & Handling of Squirrel Tails (Please follow carefully)
1) Tails are best on squirrels taken after October 1.
2) Do NOT remove the bone from the tail; deboned & split tails have no value.
3) Salt the butt end of the tail generously. Use either dry salt or dip in a strong saltwater
solution.
4) Be sure the tail is straight before drying. Tails that dry curled are useless.
5) Keep tails away from flies. Best storage is in a freezer. Do NOT send tails that have
been exposed to flies.
6) Do NOT put tails in a plastic bag for storage or shipment. They could heat-up and spoil.
7) The best time to ship is during the cold months (December, January, February, March),
although dried squirrel tails may be shipped anytime.

this catalog. Please give us the stock numbers of the items you want when you send
us the tails. Sorry, no other discounts or special offers apply.
